We study the robustness and fragility of entanglement of open quantum systems in some exactly solvable models in which the decoherence is caused by a pure dephasing process. In particular, for the toy models presented in this paper, we identify two different time scales, one is responsible for local dephasing, while the other is for entanglement decay. For a class of fragile entangled states defined in this paper, we find that the entanglement of two qubits, as measured by concurrence, decays faster asymptotically than the quantum dephasing of an individual qubit.
The destruction of entanglement of open quantum systems by decoherence is investigated in the asymptotic long-time limit. Starting from a general and analytically solvable decoherence model which does not involve any weak-coupling or Markovian assumption it is shown that two fundamentally different classes of entangled states can be distinguished. Quantum states of the first class are fragile against decoherence so that they can be disentangled asymptotically even if coherences between pointer states are still present. Quantum states of the second type are robust against decoherence. Asymptoti…
We introduce an exactly solvable model to study decoherence of a central spin interacting with a spin bath where the coupling is mediated by phonons which we assume to be in a coherent state or thermal distribution. For the coherent state case, we find that the decoherence factor decays in a Gaussian fashion and it becomes independent of the phonon frequencies at short times. If the phonon energies are much larger than spin-phonon coupling or bath spins are fully polarized, decoherence time becomes independent of the initial phonon state. For the thermal state case, phonons play more important…
We analyze decoherence of an electron in a double-dot due to the interaction with acoustic phonons. For large tunneling rates between the quantum dots, the main contribution to decoherence comes from the phonon emission relaxation processes, while for small tunneling rates, the virtual-phonon, dephasing processes dominate. Our results show that in common semiconductors, such as Si and GaAs, the latter mechanism determines the upper limit for the double-dot charge qubit performance measure.
Quantum correlations typically decrease with increasing noise, although classical correlators (CCors) may rise for a particular class of states with noise. To analyse the behavior of classical correlation (CC) in the presence of local noise, we scrutinize the set of classical correlators, axiomatic CC measures like classical discord, and local work for Haar uniformly generated states. Like quantum correlation measures, we illustrate that when noise levels rise, the average value of the CC measures for noisy output states obtained from random input states decreases for most of the channels. We …
Many quantum dot qubits operate in regimes where the energy splittings between qubit states are large and phonons can be the dominant source of decoherence. The recently proposed charge quadrupole qubit, based on one electron in a triple quantum dot, employs a highly symmetric charge distribution to suppress the influence of charge noise. To study the effects of phonons on the charge quadrupole qubit, we consider Larmor and Ramsey pulse sequences to identify favorable operating parameters. We show that it is possible to implement typical gates with $>99.99\%$ fidelity in the presence of phonon…
Recent experiments by Hayashi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 226804 (2003)] demonstrate coherent oscillations of a charge quantum bit (qubit) in laterally defined quantum dots. We study the intrinsic electron-phonon decoherence and gate performance for the next step: a system of two coupled charge qubits. The effective decoherence model contains properties of local as well as collective decoherence. Decoherence channels can be classified by their multipole moments, which leads to different low-energy spectra. It is shown that due to the super-Ohmic spectrum, the gate quality is limited by the si…
We discuss the coherent splitting and recombining of a nanoparticle in a mesoscopic "closed-loop" Stern-Gerlach interferometer in which the observable is the spin of a single impurity embedded in the particle. This spin, when interacting with a pulsed magnetic gradient, generates the force on the particle. We calculate the internal decoherence which arises as the displaced impurity excites internal degrees of freedom (phonons) that may provide Welcher Weg information and preclude interference. We estimate the constraints this decoherence channel puts on future interference experiments with mas…
Solid-state emitters are excellent candidates for developing integrated sources of single photons. Yet, phonons degrade the photon indistinguishability both through pure dephasing of the zero-phonon line and through phonon-assisted emission. Here, we study theoretically and experimentally the indistinguishability of photons emitted by a semiconductor quantum dot in a microcavity as a function of temperature. We show that a large coupling to a high quality factor cavity can simultaneously reduce the effect of both phonon-induced sources of decoherence. It first limits the effect of pure dephasi…
We uncover two microscopic physical settings with significant pure spin decoherence. First, for quantum dots (QD) electrostatically confined in two-dimensional hole gas, decoherence comes from qubit spin-orbit (SO) coupling to phonons, whose decay due to free charge carriers in contacts is described by Ohmic weighted phonon spectral function. We derive significant SO interactions affecting holes with origin and symmetry distinct from that of conventionally considered Dresselhaus and Rashba terms. In the second setting of electron or hole QDs coupled to a linear chain of atoms, decoherence is d…
We study theoretically the phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence of spin states of two electrons in a lateral double quantum dot in a SiGe/Si/SiGe heterostructure. We consider two types of singlet-triplet spin qubits and calculate their relaxation and decoherence times, in particular as a function of level hybridization, temperature, magnetic field, spin orbit interaction, and detuning between the quantum dots, using Bloch-Redfield theory. We show that the magnetic field gradient, which is usually applied to operate the spin qubit, may reduce the relaxation time by more than an order of ma…
In this paper we investigate decoherence times of a double quantum dot (DQD) charge qubit due to it coupling with acoustic phonon baths. We individually consider the acoustic piezoelectric as well as deformation coupling phonon baths in the qubit environment. The decoherence times are calculated with two kinds of methods. One of them is based on the qusiadiabatic propagator path integral (QUAPI) and the other is based on Bloch equations, and two kinds of results are compared. It is shown that the theoretical decoherence times of the DQD charge qubit are shorter than the experimental reported r…
We develop a general microscopic theory describing the phonon decoherence of quantum dots and indistinguishability of the emitted photons in photonic structures. The coherence is found to depend fundamentally on the dimensionality of the structure resulting in vastly different performance for quantum dots embedded in a nano-cavity (0D), waveguide (1D), slab (2D), or bulk medium (3D). In bulk, we find a striking temperature dependence of the dephasing rate scaling as $T^{11}$ implying that phonons are effectively 'frozen out' for $T \lesssim 4 \mathrm{K}$. The phonon density of states is strong…
We develop a "chain-boson model" master equation, within the Born-Markov approximation, for a few superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) coupled into a chain and exchanging their angular momenta with a low temperature phonon bath. Our master equation has four generators; we concentrate on the damping and diffusion and use them to study the relaxation and decoherence of a Heisenberg SQUID chain whose spectrum exhibits critical point energy-level crossings, entangled states, and pairs of resonant transitions. We note that at an energy-level crossing the relevant bath wavelengths a…
We study theoretically the phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence processes in the hybrid qubit in silicon. Hybrid qubit behaves as a charge qubit when the detuning is close to zero and as spin qubit for large detuning values. It is realized starting from an electrostatically defined double quantum dot where three electrons are confined and manipulated through only electrical tuning. By employing a three-level effective model for the qubit and describing the environment bath as a series of harmonic oscillators in the thermal equilibrium states, we extract the relaxation and decoherence time…
We show that the influence of the shared phonon bath considered in H. Hossein-Nejad and G. D. Scholes, New J. Phys. 12, 065045 (2010) on the exciton transfer in a two-molecule system can be reproduced by that of an independent bath model.
A technique to measure the decoherence time of optical phonons in a solid is presented. Phonons are excited with a pair of time delayed 80 fs, near infrared pulses via spontaneous, transient Raman scattering. The fringe visibility of the resulting Stokes pulse pair, as a function of time delay, is used to measure the phonon dephasing time. The method avoids the need to use either narrow band or few femtosecond pulses and is useful for low phonon excitations. The dephasing time of phonons created in bulk diamond is measured to be tau = 6.8ps (1.56cm-1).
We investigate the phonon-induced decoherence and dissipation in a donor-based charge quantum bit realized by the orbital states of an electron shared by two dopant ions which are implanted in a silicon host crystal. The dopant ions are taken from the group-V elements Bi, As, P, Sb. The excess electron is coupled to deformation potential acoustic phonons which dominate in the Si host. The particular geometry tailors a non-monotonous frequency distribution of the phonon modes. We determine the exact qubit dynamics under the influence of the phonons by employing the numerically exact quasi-adiab…
We study electron-phonon interaction induced decoherence between two-electron singlet and triplet states in a semiconductor double quantum dot using a spin-boson model. We investigate the onset and time evolution of this dephasing, and study its dependence on quantum dot parameters such as dot size and double dot separations, as well as the host materials (GaAs and Si). At the short time limit, electron-phonon interaction only causes an incomplete initial Gaussian decay of the off-diagonal density matrix element in the singlet-triplet Hilbert space. A complete long-time exponential decay due t…
We apply modern techniques from quantum optics and quantum information science to Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) in order to study, for the first time, the quantum decoherence of phonons of isolated BECs. In the last few years, major advances in the manipulation and control of phonons have highlighted their potential as carriers of quantum information in quantum technologies, particularly in quantum processing and quantum communication. Although most of these studies have focused on trapped ion and crystalline systems, another promising system that has remained relatively unexplored is BECs.…
Paramagnetic defects in diamond and hexagonal boron nitride possess a unique combination of spin and optical properties that make them prototypical solid-state qubits. Despite the coherence of these spin qubits being critically limited by spin-phonon relaxation, a full understanding of this process is not yet available. Here we apply ab initio spin dynamics simulations to this problem and quantitatively reproduce the experimental temperature dependence of spin relaxation time and spin coherence time. We demonstrate that low-frequency two-phonon modulations of the zero-field splitting are respo…
We study the effect of local decoherence on arbitrary quantum states. Adapting techniques developed in quantum metrology, we show that the action of generic local noise processes -- though arbitrarily small -- always yields a state whose Quantum Fisher Information (QFI) with respect to local observables is linear in system size N, independent of the initial state. This implies that all macroscopic quantum states, which are characterized by a QFI that is quadratic in N, are fragile under decoherence, and cannot be maintained if the system is not perfectly isolated. We also provide analytical bo…
Decoherence-free subsystems have been successfully developed as a tool to preserve fragile quantum information against noises. In this letter, we develop a structure theory for decoherence-free subsystems. Based on it, we present an effective algorithm to construct a set of maximal decoherence-free subsystems in the sense that any other such subsystem is a subspace of one of them. As an application of these techniques in quantum many body systems, we propose a simple and numerically robust method to determine if two irreducible tensors are repeated, a key step in deciding if they are equivalen…
The fundamental process limiting the coherence of quantum-dot based single-photon sources is the interaction with phonons. We study the effect of phonon decoherence on the indistinguishability of single photons emitted from a quantum dot embedded in a suspended nanobeam waveguide. At low temperatures, the indistinguishability is limited by the coupling between the quantum dot and the fundamental vibrational modes of the waveguide and is sensitive to the quantum-dot position within the nanobeam cross-section. We show that this decoherence channel can be efficiently suppressed by clamping the wa…
The dynamics of coherent electron-phonon (el-ph) states is investigated for a suspended nanostructure. Exact quantum dynamics calculations reveal that electron and phonons (comprising a thermal bath) couple quantum mechanically to perform coherent oscillations with periods in the range of tens of nanoseconds, despite the finite temperature of the phonon bath. Mechanical energy dissipation due to clamping loss is taken into account in the calculations. Although the lifetime of the coupled el-ph states decreases with the temperature, well defined Rabi oscillations are obtained for temperatures u…
We study decoherence in an interacting qubit system described by infinite range Heisenberg model (IRHM) in a situation where the system is coupled to a bath of local optical phonons. Using perturbation theory in polaron frame of reference, we derive an effective Hamiltonian that is valid in the regime of strong spin-phonon coupling under non-adiabatic conditions. It is shown that the effective Hamiltonian commutes with the IRHM upto leading orders of perturbation and thus has the same eigenstates as the IRHM. Using a quantum master equation with Markovian approximation of dynamical evolution, …
We study two anisotropically interacting spins coupled to optical phonons; we restrict our analysis to the regime of strong coupling to the environment, to the antiadiabatic region, and to the subspace with zero value for $S^z_T$ (the z-component of the total spin). In the case where each spin is coupled to a different phonon bath, we assume that the system and the environment are initially uncorrelated (and form a simply separable state) in the polaronic frame of reference. By analyzing the {polaron} dynamics through non-Markovian quantum master equation, we find that the system manifests a s…
Understanding coherent dynamics of excitons, spins, or hard-core bosons (HCBs) has tremendous scientific and technological implications for light harvesting and quantum computation. Here, we study decay of excited-state population and decoherence in two models for HCBs, namely: an infinite-range HCB model governed by Markovian dynamics and a two-site HCB model with site-dependent strong potentials and subject to non-Markovian dynamics. Both models are investigated in the regimes of antiadiabaticity and strong HCB-phonon coupling with each site providing a different local optical phonon environ…
We use the Bloch-Redfield-Wangsness theory to calculate the effects of acoustic phonons in coherent control experiments, where quantum-dot excitons are driven by shaped laser pulses. This theory yields a generalized Lindblad equation for the density operator of the dot, with time-dependent damping and decoherence due to phonon transitions between the instantaneous dressed states. It captures similar physics to the form recently applied to Rabi oscillation experiments [A. J. Ramsay et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 017402 (2010)], but guarantees positivity of the density operator. At sufficiently l…
We study the effect of phonons on a proposed scheme for the direct measurement of two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot by monitoring the the noise of the current flowing through a quantum point contact coupled to one of the dots. We show that although the effect of phonons is damaging to the procedure at extremely low temperatures characteristic of spin-in-quantum-dots experiments, and may even be fatal, increasing the temperature leads to a revival of the schemes usefulness. Furthermore, at higher, but still reasonably low temperatures phonon effects become advantageous to the mea…
We study decoherence in an infinite range Heisenberg model (IRHM) in the two situations where the system is coupled to a bath of either local optical phonons or global optical phonons. Using a non-perturbative treatment, we derive an effective Hamiltonian that is valid in the regime of strong spin-phonon coupling under non-adiabatic conditions. It is shown that the effective Hamiltonian commutes with the IRHM and thus has the same eigenstates as the IRHM. By analyzing the dynamics of the system using a quantum master equation approach, we show that the quantum states of the IRHM system do not …
We propose a general approach of protecting a two-level system against decoherence via quantum engineering of non-classical multiple superpositions of coherent states in a non-Markovian reservoir. The scheme surprisingly only uses the system-environment interaction responsible for the decoherence and projective measurements of the two-level system. We demonstrate the method on the example of an excitonic qubit in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots coupled to super-Ohmic reservoir of acoustic phonons.
We consider the collision model of Ziman {\em et al.} and study the robustness of $N$-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ), W, and linear cluster states. Our results show that $N$-qubit entanglement of GHZ states would be extremely fragile under collisional decoherence, and that of W states could be more robust than of linear cluster states. We indicate that the collision model of Ziman {\em et al.} could provide a physical mechanism to some known results in this area of investigations. More importantly, we show that it could give a clue as to how $N$-partite distillable entanglement would …
We report on exciton-acoustic-phonon coupling effects on the generation of exciton maximally entangled states in N=2 and 3 quantum dot systems. In particular, we address the question of the combined effect of laser pulses, appropriate for generating Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger entangled states, together with decoherence mechanisms as provided by a phonon reservoir. By solving numerically the master equation for the optically driven exciton-phonon kinetics, we show that the generation of maximally entangled exciton states is preserved over a reasonable parameter window.
Experimental observation of the decoherence of macroscopic objects is of fundamental importance to the study of quantum collapse models and the quantum to classical transition. Optomechanics is a promising field for the study of such models because of its fine control and readout of mechanical motion. Nevertheless, it is challenging to monitor a mechanical superposition state for long enough to investigate this transition. We present a scheme for entangling two mechanical resonators in spatial superposition states such that all quantum information is stored in the mechanical resonators. The sc…
Phonon interactions in solid-state photonics systems cause intrinsic quantum decoherence and often present the limiting factor in emerging quantum technology. Due to recent developments in nanophotonics, exciton-cavity structures with very strong light-matter coupling rates can be fabricated. We show that in such structures, a new regime emerges, where the decoherence is completely suppressed due to decoupling of the dominant phonon process. Using a numerically exact tensor network approach, we perform calculations in this non-perturbative, non-Markovian dynamical regime. Here, we identify a s…
We consider charge qubits based on shallow donor electron states in silicon and coupled quantum dots in GaAs. Specifically, we study the feasibility of P$_2^+$ charge qubits in Si, focusing on single qubit properties in terms of tunnel coupling between the two phosphorus donors and qubit decoherence caused by electron-phonon interaction. By taking into consideration the multi-valley structure of the Si conduction band, we show that inter-valley quantum interference has important consequences for single-qubit operations of P$_2^+$ charge qubits. In particular, the valley interference leads to a…
A quantum version of the Minority game for an arbitrary number of agents is considered. It is known that when the number of agents is odd, quantizing the game produces no advantage to the players, but for an even number of agents new Nash equilibria appear that have no classical analogue and have improved payoffs. We study the effect on the Nash equilibrium payoff of various forms of decoherence. As the number of players increases the multipartite GHZ state becomes increasingly fragile, as indicated by the smaller error probability required to reduce the Nash equilibrium payoff to the classica…
By using the Redfield form of the master equation, we investigate the decoherence times of a double quantum dot charge qubit (DQDCQ) in three different cases, namely when it is coupled to (I) the piezoelectric coupling phonon bath (PCPB), (II) the deformation coupling phonon bath (DCPB), and (III) the Ohmic bath. It is found that our results for case (I) and (II) are in the same magnitude with those obtained via the exact path integral methods, while for case (III), the decoherence time is in well agreement with the experimental value.
Certain quantum states are well-known to be particularly fragile in the presence of decoherence, as illustrated by Schrodinger's famous gedanken cat experiment. It has been better appreciated more recently that quantum states can be characterized in a hierarchy of quantum quantities such entanglement, quantum correlations, and quantum coherence. It has been conjectured that each of these quantities have various degrees of fragility in the presence of decoherence. Here we experimentally confirm this conjecture by preparing tripartite photonic states and subjecting them to controlled amounts of …
Methods for quantifying environmentally induced decoherence in quantum systems are investigated. We formulate criteria for measuring the degree of decoherence and consider several representative examples, including a spin interacting with the modes of a bosonic, e.g., phonon, bath. We formulate an approach based on the operator norm measuring the deviation of the actual density matrix from the ideal one which would describe the system without environmental interactions.
We first present a summary of recent results concerning the phononic energy transport properties of mesoscopic, suspended dielectric wires. We then discuss some related open problems concerning the fundamental lower limits on the vibrational damping rates of submicron-sized cantilever structures and also the possibility to create and detect quantum superpositions of spatially separated states for such structures.
We introduce, for each state of a bosonic quantum field, its quadrature coherence scale (QCS), a measure of the range of its quadrature coherences. Under coupling to a thermal bath, the purity and QCS are shown to decrease on a time scale inversely proportional to the QCS squared. The states most fragile to decoherence are therefore those with quadrature coherences far from the diagonal. We further show a large QCS is difficult to measure since it induces small scale variations in the state's Wigner function. These two observations imply a large QCS constitutes a mark of "macroscopic coherence…
We consider spatially separated qubits coupled to a thermal bosonic field that causes pure dephasing. Our focus is on the entanglement of two Bell states which for vanishing separation are known as robust and fragile entangled states. The reduced two-qubit dynamics is solved exactly and explicitly. Our results allow us to gain information about the robustness of two-qubit decoherence-free subspaces with respect to physical parameters such as temperature, qubit-bath coupling strength and spatial separation of the qubits. Moreover, we clarify the relation between single-qubit coherence and two-q…
We theoretically study the quantum dynamics of transverse vibrations of a one-dimensional chain of trapped ions in harmonic potentials interacting via a Reggeon-type cubic nonlinearity that is nonunitary but preserves PT symmetry. We propose the notion of quantum fragility for the dissipative structural phase transition that spontaneously breaks the PT symmetry. In the quantum fragile regime, the nonlinearity dominates the response to mechanical perturbations and the chain supports neither the ordinary quantum phonons of a Luttinger liquid, nor the supersonic solitons that arise in classical f…
Evolution of quantum states of array of quantum dots is analyzed by means of numerical solution of the von Neumann equation. For two qubit system with dipole-dipole interaction and common phonon bath the evolution of the symmetric state $\frac{\uparrow\downarrow+\downarrow\uparrow}{\sqrt{2}}$ leads to the mixture of the triplet states, leaving the singlet decoupled. For three qubit system ($D_{1/2}^{\otimes3}=D_{3/2}+2D_{1/2}$) with common phonon bath we observed similar effects within the quartet state $D_{3/2}$ if all qubits were symmetrically connected.
We considered the interaction of semiconductor quantum register with noisy environment leading to various types of qubit errors. We analysed both phase and amplitude decays during the process of electron-phonon interaction. The performance of quantum error correction codes (QECC) which will be inevitably used in full scale quantum information processors was studied in realistic conditions in semiconductor nanostructures. As a hardware basis for quantum bit we chose the quantum spatial states of single electron in semiconductor coupled double quantum dot system. The modified 5- and 9-qubit quan…
We demonstrate that an optically driven spin of a carrier in a quantum dot undergoes indirect dephasing via conditional optically induced charge evolution even in the absence of any direct interaction between the spin and its environment. A generic model for the indirect dephasing with a three-component system with spin, charge, and reservoir is proposed. This indirect decoherence channel is studied for the optical spin manipulation in a quantum dot with a microscopic description of the charge-phonon interaction taking into account its non-Markovian nature.
