It is shown that the eigenvalue problem for the Hamiltonians of the standard form, $H=p^2/(2m)+V(x)$, is equivalent to the classical dynamical equation for certain harmonic oscillators with time-dependent frequency. This is another indication of the central role played by time-dependent harmonic oscillators in quantum mechanics. The utility of the known results for eigenvalue problem in the solution of the dynamical equations of a class of time-dependent harmonic oscillators is also pointed out.
We discuss the solutions of the Schroedinger equation for piecewise potentials, given by the harmonic oscillator potential for $\vert x\vert >a$ and an arbitrary function for $\vert x\vert <a$, using elementary methods. The study of this problem sheds light on usual errors when discussing the asymptotic behavior of the eigenfunctions of the quantum harmonic oscillator and can also be used for the analysis of the eigenfunctions of the hydrogen atom. We present explicit results for the energy levels of a potential of this class, used to model the confinement of electrons in nanostructures.
The stationary Schroedinger equation of the harmonic oscillator is deformed by a Darboux transformation to construct time-dependent potentials with the oscillator profile. The Darboux (supersymmetric or factorization) method is usually developed in the spatial variables of the Schroedinger equation. Here we follow a variation introduced by Bagrov, Samsonov and Shekoyan to include the time-variable as a parameter of the transformation.
We suggest a variant of the recently proposed experiment for the generation of a new kind of Schroedinger-cat states, using two coupled parametric down-converter nonlinear crystals [F. De Martini, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 2842 (1998)]. We study the parametric oscillator case and find that an entangled Schroedinger-cat type state of two cavities, whose mirrors are placed along the output beams of the nonlinear crystals, can be realized under suitable conditions.
In this paper we investigate the operator $H_β=-Δ-βδ(\cdot-Γ)$ in $L^{2}({\Bbb R}^{2})$, where $β>0$ and $Γ$ is a closed $C^{4}$ Jordan curve in ${\Bbb R}^{2}$. We obtain the asymptotic form of each eigenvalue of $H_β$ as $β$ tends to infinity. We also get the asymptotic form of the number of negative eigenvalues of $H_β$ in the strong coupling asymptotic regime.
We construct a general algorithm generating the analytic eigenfunctions as well as eigenvalues of one-dimensional stationary Schroedinger Hamiltonians. Both exact and quasi-exact Hamiltonians enter our formalism but we focus on quasi-exact interactions for which no such general approach has been considered before. In particular we concentrate on a generalized sextic oscillator but also on the Lame and the screened Coulomb potentials.
A closed expression for the harmonic oscillator wave function after the passage of a linear signal with arbitrary time dependence is derived. Transition probabilities are simple to express in terms of Laguerre polynomials. Spontaneous transitions are neglected. The exact result is of some interest for the physics of short laser pulses, since it may serve as an accuracy test for numerical methods.
A simple version of the q-deformed calculus is used to generate a pair of q-nonlocal, second-order difference operators by means of deformed counterparts of Darboux intertwining operators for zero factorization energy. These deformed non-local operators may be considered as supersymmetric partners and their structure contains contributions originating in both the Hermite operator and the quantum harmonic oscillator operator. There are also extra $\pm x$ contributions. The undeformed limit, in which all q-nonlocalities wash out, corresponds to the usual supersymmetric pair of quantum mechanical…
A revised iterative method based on Green function defined by quadratures along a single trajectory is proposed to solve the low-lying quantum wave function for Schroedinger equation. Specially a new expression of the perturbed energy is obtained, which is much simpler than the traditional one. The method is applied to solve the unharmonic oscillator potential. The revised iteration procedure gives exactly the same result as those based on the single trajectory quadrature method. A comparison of the revised iteration method to the old one is made using the example of Stark effect. The obtained…
We present some physically interesting, in general non-stationary, one-dimensional solutions to the nonlinear phase modification of the Schrödinger equation proposed recently. The solutions include a coherent state, a phase-modified Gaussian wave packet in the potential of harmonic oscillator whose strength varies in time, a free Gaussian soliton, and a similar soliton in the potential of harmonic oscillator comoving with the soliton. The last of these solutions implies that there exist an energy level in the spectrum of harmonic oscillator which is not predicted by the linear theory. The free…
Based on an iterative method for solving the goundstate of Schroedinger equation, it is found that a kind of generalized Sombrero-shaped potentials in N-dimensional space has groundstates with zero eigenvalue. The restrictions on the parameters in the potential are discussed.
A model of wave function collapse in a quantum measurement of spin as the Schroedinger equation solution of a system with a simple harmonic oscillator in a bath
New examples of matrix quasi exactly solvable Schroedinger operators are constructed. One of them constitutes a matrix generalization of the quasi exactly solvable anharmonic oscillator, the corresponding invariant vector space is constructed explicitely. Also investigated are matrix generalizations of the Lame equation.
The eigenvalues of a pure quartic oscillator are computed, applying a canonical operator formulation, generalized from the harmonic oscillator. Solving a 10x10 secular equation produces eigenvalues in agreement, to at least 4 significant figures, with accurate computations given in the literature.
Three-body Schroedinger equation is studied in one dimension. Its two-body interactions are assumed composed of the long-range attraction (dominated by the L-th-power potential) in superposition with a short-range repulsion (dominated by the (-K)-th-power core) plus further subdominant power-law components if necessary. This unsolvable and non-separable generalization of Calogero model (which is a separable and solvable exception at L = K = 2) is presented in polar Jacobi coordinates. We derive a set of trigonometric identities for the potentials which generalizes the well known K=2 identity o…
The following comparison rules for the discrete spectrum of the position-dependent mass (PDM) Schroedinger equation are established. (i) If a constant mass $m_0$ and a PDM $m(x)$ are ordered everywhere, that is either $m_0\leq m(x)$ or $m_0\geq m(x)$, then the corresponding eigenvalues of the constant-mass Hamiltonian and of the PDM Hamiltonian with the same potential and the BenDaniel-Duke ambiguity parameters are ordered. (ii) The corresponding eigenvalues of PDM Hamiltonians with the different sets of ambiguity parameters are ordered if $\nabla^2 (1/m(x))$ has a definite sign. We prove thes…
We solve the parametric generalized effective Schrödinger equation with a specific choice of posi-tion-dependent mass function and Morse oscillator potential by means of the Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method combined with the Pekeris approximation scheme. All bound-state energies are found explicitly and all corresponding radial wave functions are built analytically. We choose the Weyl or Li and Kuhn ordering for the ambiguity parameters in our numerical work to calculate the energy spectrum for a few and diatomic molecules with arbitrary vibration and rotation quantum numbers and different positio…
We present a nonlinear stochastic Schroedinger equation for pure states describing non-Markovian diffusion of quantum trajectories. It provides an unravelling of the evolution of a quantum system coupled to a finite or infinite number of harmonic oscillators, without any approximation. Its power is illustrated by several examples, including measurement-like situations, dissipation, and quantum Brownian motion. In some examples, we treat the environment phenomenologically as an infinite reservoir with fluctuations of arbitrary correlation. In other examples the environment consists of a finite …
The goal of this paper is to derive estimates of eigenvalue moments for Dirichlet Laplacians and Schrödinger operators in regions having infinite cusps which are geometrically nontrivial being either curved or twisted; we are going to show how those geometric properties enter the eigenvalue bounds. The obtained inequalities reflect the essentially one-dimensional character of the cusps and we give an example showing that in an intermediate energy region they can be much stronger than the usual semiclassical bounds.
This paper is a direct offspring of Ref. [J. Math. Phys. 54, 072103, (2013)] where basic tenets of the nonlocally induced random and quantum dynamics were analyzed. A number of mentions was maid with respect to various inconsistencies and faulty statements omnipresent in the literature devoted to so-called fractional quantum mechanics spectral problems. Presently, we give a decisive computer-assisted proof, for an exemplary finite and ultimately infinite Cauchy well problem, that spectral solutions proposed so far were plainly wrong. As a constructive input, we provide an explicit spectral sol…
In this note we show that the standard \mbox{Rayleigh-Schrödinger} (RS) perturbation method gives the same result as the hypervirial pertubative method (HPM), for an approximate analytic expression for the energy eigenvalues of the bounded quartic oscillator. This connection between the HPM and the RS method went unnoticed for a long time, apparently because it was not obvious that the resulting polygamma sums to be evaluated in the RS method could, in fact, be expressed in closed form.
A non-Markovian stochastic Schroedinger equation for a quantum system coupled to an environment of harmonic oscillators is presented. Its solutions, when averaged over the noise, reproduce the standard reduced density operator without any approximation. We illustrate the power of this approach with several examples, including exponentially decaying bath correlations and extreme non-Markovian cases, where the `environment' consists of only a single oscillator. The latter case shows the decay and revival of a `Schroedinger cat' state. For strong coupling to a dissipative environment with memory,…
Quantum mechanics has about a dozen exactly solvable potentials. Normally, the time-independent Schroedinger equation for them is solved by using a generalized series solution for the bound states (using the Froebenius method) and then an analytic continuation for the continuum states (if present). In this work, we present an alternative way to solve these problems, based on the Laplace method. This technique uses a similar procedure for the bound states and for the continuum states. It was originally used by Schroedinger when he solved for the wavefunctions of hydrogen. Dirac advocated using …
We investigate the operator $-Δ-αδ(x-Γ)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$, where $Γ$ is a smooth surface which is either compact or periodic and satisfies suitable regularity requirements. We find an asymptotic expansion for the lower part of the spectrum as $α\to\infty$ which involves a ``two-dimensional'' comparison operator determined by the geometry of the surface $Γ$. In the compact case the asymptotics concerns negative eigenvalues, in the periodic case Floquet eigenvalues. We also give a bandwidth estimate in the case when a periodic $Γ$ decomposes into compact connected components. Finally, we c…
By assuming that a particle of energy hbar.omega is actually a dissipative system maintained in a nonequilibrium steady state by a constant throughput of energy (heat flow), the exact Schroedinger equation is derived, both for conservative and nonconservative systems. Thereby, only universal properties of oscillators and nonequilibrium thermostatting are used, such that a maximal model independence of the hypothesised sub-quantum physics is guaranteed. It is claimed that this represents the shortest derivation of the Schroedinger equation from (modern) classical physics in the literature, and …
We outline a method based on successive canonical transformations which yields a product expansion for the evolution operator of a general (possibly non-Hermitian) Hamiltonian. For a class of such Hamiltonians this expansion involves a finite number of terms, and our method gives the exact solution of the corresponding time-dependent Schroedinger equation. We apply this method to study the dynamics of a general nondegenerate two-level quantum system, a time-dependent classical harmonic oscillator, and a degenerate system consisting of a spin 1 particle interacting with a time-dependent electri…
It is shown that general solutions of the free-particle Schroedinger equation can be mapped onto solutions of the Schroedinger equation for the harmonic oscillator. This is done in such a way that the time evolution of a free particle subjected to a sudden transition to a harmonic potential can be described by a simple coordinate transformation applied at the transition time. This procedure is computationally more efficient than either state-projection or propagator techniques. A concatenation of the map and its inverse allows us to map from one harmonic oscillator to another with a different …
We consider a class of one-dimensional nonhermitian oscillators and discuss the relationship between the real eigenvalues of PT-symmetric oscillators and the resonances obtained by different authors. We also show the relationship between the strong-coupling expansions for the eigenvalues of those oscillators. Comparison of the results of the complex rotation and the Riccati-Padé methods reveals that the optimal rotation angle converts the oscillator into either a PT-symmetric or an Hermitian one. In addition to the real positive eigenvalues the PT-symmetric oscillators exhibit real positive re…
We obtain sufficiently accurate eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the anharmonic oscillator with potential $V(x,y)=x^{2}y^{2}$ by means of three different methods. Our results strongly suggest that the spectrum of this oscillator is discrete in agreement with early rigorous mathematical proofs and against a recent statement that cast doubts about it.
The Schroedinger operator with point interaction in one dimension has a U(2) family of self-adjoint extensions. We study the spectrum of the operator and show that (i) the spectrum is uniquely determined by the eigenvalues of the matrix U belonging to U(2) that characterizes the extension, and that (ii) the space of distinct spectra is given by the orbifold T^2/Z_2 which is a Moebius strip with boundary. We employ a parametrization of U(2) that admits a direct physical interpretation and furnishes a coherent framework to realize the spectral duality and anholonomy recently found. This allows u…
We construct one soliton solutions for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with variable quadratic Hamiltonians in a unified form by taking advantage of a complete (super) integrability of generalized harmonic oscillators. The soliton wave evolution in external fields with variable quadratic potentials is totally determined by the linear problem, like motion of a classical particle with acceleration, and the (self-similar) soliton shape is due to a subtle balance between the linear Hamiltonian (dispersion and potential) and nonlinearity in the Schroedinger equation by the standards of soliton …
Recently, it has been proved that a nonlinear quantum oscillator, generalization of the isotonic one, is exactly solvable for certain values of its parameters. Here we show that the Schroedinger equation for such an oscillator can be transformed into a confluent Heun equation. We give a very simple and efficient algorithm to solve it numerically, no matter what the values of the parameters are. Algebraic quasi-polynomial solutions, for particular values of the parameters, are found.
We consider a general class of discrete unitary dynamical models on the lattice. We show that generically such models give rise to a wavefunction satisfying a Schroedinger equation in the continuum limit, in any number of dimensions. There is a simple mathematical relationship between the mass of the Schroedinger particle and the eigenvalues of a unitary matrix describing the local evolution of the model. Second quantized versions of these unitary models can be defined, describing in the continuum limit the evolution of a nonrelativistic quantum many-body theory. An arbitrary potential is easi…
In this article, we consider a set of trial wave-functions denoted by $| Q \right>$ and an associated set of operators $A_α$ which generate transformations connecting those trial states. Using variational principles, we show that we can always obtain a quantum Monte-Carlo method where the quantum evolution of a system is replaced by jumps between density matrices of the form $D = |Q_a> <Q_b|$, and where the average evolutions of the moments of $A_α$ up to a given order $k$, i.e. $< A_{α_1} >$, $< A_{α_1} A_{α_2} >$,..., $< A_{α_1} ... A_{α_k} >$, are constrained to follow the exact Ehrenfest e…
We study the eigenvalue problem $-u"+V(z)u=λu$ in the complex plane with the boundary condition that $u(z)$ decays to zero as $z$ tends to infinity along the two rays $\arg z=-\fracπ{2} \pm \frac{2π}{m+2}$, where $V(z)=-(iz)^m-P(iz)$ for complex-valued polynomials $P$ of degree at most $m-1\geq 2$. We provide an asymptotic formula for eigenvalues and a necessary and sufficient condition for the anharmonic oscillator to have infinitely many real eigenvalues.
In the quantum frame, for 3-dimensional space, in the two body problem case, we approach the Schrödinger equation (SE) taking in account the potential: Vq(r)=Dr^2+(A/r)+(B/r^2) called by us quasi-harmonic potential with the centrifugal type term, with D,A,B >0 and D<<1. We use Laplace transform method (LTM) and we find for the first time an analytic solution of the Vq-potential problem. Namely, using directly and inverse Laplace transformations, we obtain the complete forms of the energy eigenvalues and wave functions. Furthermore, for this potential Vq, we make considerations about critical o…
The eigenvalues of the Liouvillians of Markovian master equation for a harmonic oscillator have a generic form. The Liouvillians considered are quadratic in the position coordinates or creation and annihilation operators, as well as having positive renormalized frequencies. We prove this by showing that a generic Liouvillian of this form can be similarly related to the Liouvillian of the Kossakowski--Lindblad equation, whose eigenvalues are already known. The left and right eigenfunctions of the generic Liouvillian also form a complete and biorthogonal set. Examples of similarly related right …
Closed-form expressions for the singular-potential integrals <m| x^-alpha |n> are obtained with respect to the Gol'dman and Krivchenkov eigenfunctions for the singular potential V(x) = B x^2 + A/x^2, B > 0, A >= 0. These formulas are generalizations of those found earlier by use of the odd solutions of the Schroedinger equation with the harmonic oscillator potential [Aguilera-Navarro et al, J. Math. Phys. 31, 99 (1990)].
We present a supersymmetric analysis for the d-dimensional Schroedinger equation with the generalized isotonic nonlinear-oscillator potential V(r)={B^2}/{r^{2}}+ω^{2} r^{2}+2g{(r^{2}-a^{2})}/{(r^{2}+a^{2})^{2}}, B\geq 0. We show that the eigenequation for this potential is exactly solvable provided g=2 and (ωa^2)^2 = B^2 +(\ell +(d-2)/2)^2. Under these conditions, we obtain explicit formulae for all the energies and normalized bound-state wavefunctions.
An exactly solvable position-dependent mass Schrödinger equation in two dimensions, depicting a particle moving in a semi-infinite layer, is re-examined in the light of recent theories describing superintegrable two-dimensional systems with integrals of motion that are quadratic functions of the momenta. To get the energy spectrum a quadratic algebra approach is used together with a realization in terms of deformed parafermionic oscillator operators. In this process, the importance of supplementing algebraic considerations with a proper treatment of boundary conditions for selecting physical w…
In this note we consider a one-dimensional quantum mechanical particle constrained by a parabolic well perturbed by a Gaussian potential. As the related Birman-Schwinger operator is trace class, the Fredholm determinant can be exploited in order to compute the modified eigenenergies which differ from those of the harmonic oscillator due to the presence of the Gaussian perturbation. By taking advantage of Wang's results on scalar products of four eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator, it is possible to evaluate quite accurately the two lowest-lying eigenvalues as functions of the coupling c…
We analyze two-dimensional Schrödinger operators with the potential $|xy|^p - λ(x^2+y^2)^{p/(p+2)}$ where $p\ge 1$ and $λ\ge 0$, which exhibit an abrupt change of its spectral properties at a critical value of the coupling constant $λ$. We show that in the supercritical case the spectrum covers the whole real axis. In contrast, for $λ$ below the critical value the spectrum is purely discrete and we establish a Lieb-Thirring-type bound on its moments. In the critical case the essential spectrum covers the positive halfline while the negative spectrum can be only discrete, we demonstrate numeric…
Hilbert Spaces of bounded one dimensional non-linear oscillators are studied. It is shown that the eigenvalue structure of all such oscillators have the same general form. They are dependent only on the ground state energy of the system and a single functional $λ(H)$ of the Hamiltonian $H$ whose form depends explicitly on $H$. It is also found that the Hilbert Space of the non-linear oscillator is unitarily inequivalent to the Hilbert Space of the simple harmonic oscillator, providing an explicit example of Haag's Theorem. A number operator for the nonlinear oscillator is constructed and the g…
