The spin state of two magnetically inequivalent protons in contiguous atoms of a molecule becomes entangeled by the indirect spin-spin interaction (j-coupling). The degree of entanglement oscillates at the beat frequency resulting from the splitting of a degeneracy. This beating is manifest in NMR spectroscopy as an envelope of the transverse magnetization and should be visible in the free induction decay signal. The period (approximately 1 sec) is long enough for interference between the linear dynamics and collapse of the wave-function induced by a Stern-Gerlach inhomogeneity to significantly alter the shape of that envelope. Various dynamical collapse theories can be distinguished by their observably different predictions with respect to this alteration. Adverse effects of detuning due to the Stern-Gerlach inhomogeneity can be reduced to an acceptable level by having a sufficiently thin sample or a strong rf field.
We show that the collapse of the entangled quantum state makes the entropy increase in an isolated system. The second law of thermodynamics is thus proven in its most general form.
We propose a scheme to investigate the time scale of the wave-function collapse by using polarization-entangled photon pairs. The setup is similar to those employed to investigate quantum correlations, but in the present case, synchronization is essential at all stages. We find that it is possible to discriminate between the scenarios of instantaneous collapse and finite-time reduction via a large number of double measurements of polarization. The quantities to be recorded would present distinct behaviors in each scenario, the deviations being small but distinguishable from pure statistical fl…
We study the formation of an entangled state in a one-dimensional chain of three nuclear spins system which interact weakly through the Ising type of interaction and taking into account first and second neighbor interactions. We can get this entangled state using two pulses ($π/2$ and $π$ pulses), and we study the efficiency of getting this entangled state as a function of the ratio of the second neighbor interaction coupling constant to the first neighbor interaction coupling constant ($J'/J$). We found that for $J'/J\ge 0.04$, the entangled state is well defined.
Entangled sensors have been attracting a lot of attention recently because they can achieve the sensitivity beyond that of the classical sensors. To exploit entanglement as a resource, it is important to understand the effect of noise because the entangled state is fragile against noise. Here, we provide a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) model of an entangled sensor under engineered noise: one can implement an entangled sensor under various noisy environments. In particular, we experimentally investigate the performance of the entangled sensor under the effect of time-inhomogeneous noisy envi…
Heralded generation and manipulation of quantum entanglement between two macroscopic and spatially separated crystals at room temperature is theoretically studied. We show that by combining an x-ray parametric down-conversion source and x-ray interferometry with nuclear resonant scattering techniques, two macroscopic crystals hosting Mössbauer nuclei located each on an interferometer arm can be entangled for few tens of nanoseconds. The coherence time of the entanglement state can be prolonged up to values comparable to the lifetime of a single nuclear excited state, on the order of hundred na…
We discuss details of the preparation and detection of entangled electron-nuclear spin states in 15N:C60 together with a quantitative evaluation of the complete density matrix. All four Bell states of a two qubit subsystem were analyzed. In addition we find a quantum critical temperature of Tq = 7.73 K for this system at an electron spin resonance frequency of 95 GHz.
By choosing H nucleus in Carbon-13 labelled trichloroethylene as one qubit environment, and two C nuclei as a two-qubit system, we have simulated quantum decoherence when the system lies in an entangled state using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Decoupling technique is used to trace over the environment degrees of freedom. Experimental results show agreements with the theoretical predictions. Our experiment scheme can be generalized to the case that environment is composed of multiple qubits.
Multi-photon entangled states are a crucial resource for many applications in quantum information science. Semiconductor quantum dots offer a promising route to generate such states by mediating photon-photon correlations via a confined electron spin, but dephasing caused by the host nuclear spin environment typically limits coherence (and hence entanglement) between photons to the spin $T_2^*$ time of a few nanoseconds. We propose a protocol for the deterministic generation of multi-photon entangled states that is inherently robust against the dominating slow nuclear spin environment fluctuat…
A practical source of high fidelity entangled photons is desirable for quantum information applications and exploring quantum physics. Semiconductor quantum dots have recently been shown to conveniently emit entangled light when driven electrically, however the fidelity was not optimal. Here we show that the fidelity is not limited by decoherence, but by coherent interaction with nuclei. Furthermore we predict that on 100μs timescales, strongly enhanced fidelities could be achieved. This insight could allow tailoring of quantum logic to operate using quantum dots in the fault tolerant regime.
We investigate the specific form that the collapsed quantum state of a signal photon can take when its entangled idler is measured in an entangled ghost imaging configuration using a type II collinear phase matched spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) interaction. Calculation of the correlated counting rate distributions in the ghost image plane and diffraction plane show that agreement between collapse and non-collapse models is obtained if the signal is assumed to collapse into a specific mixed state. However, if the signal is assumed to collapse into a pure state, significant differ…
The temporal measurement order and therefore the originator of the instantaneous collapse of the wavefunction of a spatiality entangled particle pair can change depending on the reference frame of an observer. This can lead to a paradox in which its seems that both measurements collapsed the wavefunction before the other. We resolve this paradox by demonstrating how attempting to determine the order of measurement of the entangled pair introduces uncertainty which makes the measurement order impossible to know.
We study the decoherence properties of an entangled bipartite qubit system, represented by two two-level atoms that are individually coupled to non-Markovian reservoirs. This coupling ensures that the dynamical equations of the atoms can be treated independently. The non-Markovian reservoirs are described by a model which leads to an exact non-Markovian master equation of the Nakajima-Zwanzig form [J. Salo, S. M. Barnett, and S. Stenholm, Optics Commun. 259, 772 (2006)]. We consider the evolution of the entanglement of a two-atom state that is initially completely entangled, quantified by its …
In this work, we experimentally created and characterized a class of qubit-ququart PPT (positive under partial transpose) entangled states using three nuclear spins on an nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum information processor. Entanglement detection and characterization for systems with a Hilbert space dimension $\ge 2 \otimes 3$ is nontrivial since there are states in such systems which are both PPT as well as entangled. The experimental detection scheme that we devised for the detection of qubit-ququart PPT entanglement was based on the measurement of three Pauli operators with high …
Entangled quantum states are an important element of quantum information techniques. We determine the requirements for states of quadrupolar nuclei with spins >1/2 to be entangled. It was shown that entanglement is achieved at low temperature by applying a magnetic field to a quadrupolar nuclei possess quadrupole moments, which interacts with the electricfield gradient produced by the charge distribution in their surroundings.
Wave function collapse models are considered as the modified theories of standard quantum mechanics at the macroscopic level. By introducing nonlinear stochastic terms in the Schrödinger equation, these models make predictions, differently from those of standard quantum mechanics, that it is fundamentally impossible to prepare macroscopic systems in macroscopic superpositions. The validity of these models can only be examined by experiments and hence efficient protocols for this kind of experiments are highly needed. Here we provide a protocol that is able to probe the postulated collapse effe…
I want to show situations in which causal relation of two events is entangled and similar to time paradox, without employing time machines. Such situations will be obtained in measurement by two measurement devices moving mutually. According to the concept of the collapse of wave packet and the relativity of simultaneity, the causal relation of two measurements can be entangled.
We study the mechanism by which the particle-antiparticle entangled state collapses instantaneously at a distance. By making two key assumptions, we are able to show not only that instantaneous collapse of a wave function at a distance is possible but also that it is an invariant quantity under Lorentz transformation and compatible with relativity. In addition, we will be able to detect in which situation a many-body entangled system exhibits the maximum collapse speed among its entangled particles. Finally we suggest that every force in nature acts via entanglement.
A model of single photon detection, illustrated by a photon-absorbing superfluid or superconducting microvolume, is formulated as a cascading pair of quantum phase transitions. In the first, the microvolume transitions to the normal state upon photon absorption, resulting in a superposition of macrostates depending on whether the photon is absorbed or not. The second enables subsequent "wavefunction collapse," producing a density matrix implementing the Born probability rule. Next, EPR-type measurements on space-like separated entangled photon pairs are considered. It is argued that macro-enta…
We show that qubits coupled sequentially to a mesoscopic static completely mixed spin bath via the Heisenberg interaction can become highly entangled. Straightforward protocols for the generation of multipartite entangled (Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-)states are presented. We show the feasibility of an experimental realization in a quantum dot by the hyperfine interaction of an electron with the nuclear spins.
We experimentally demonstrate the nonlocal reversal of a partial-collapse quantum measurement on two-photon entangled state. Both the partial measurement and the reversal operation are implemented in linear optics with two displaced Sagnac interferometers, which are characterized by single qubit quantum process tomography. The recovered state is measured by quantum state tomography and its nonlocality is characterized by testing the Bell inequality. Our result will be helpful in quantum communication and quantum error correction.
We experimentally demonstrate room-temperature storage of quantum entanglement using two nuclear spins weakly coupled to the electronic spin carried by a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. We realize universal quantum gate control over the three-qubit spin system and produce entangled states encoded within the decoherence-free subspace of the two nuclear spins. By injecting arbitrary collective noise, we demonstrate that the decoherence-free entangled state has coherence time longer than that of other entangled states by an order of magnitude in our experiment.
We report on the preparation and detection of entangled states between an electron spin 1/2 and a nuclear spin 1/2 in a molecular single crystal. These were created by applying pulses at ESR (9.5 GHz) and NMR (28 MHz) frequencies. Entanglement was detected by using a special entanglement detector sequence based on a unitary back transformation including phase rotation.
In this paper we have firstly recapped some evolutionary debates on conceptual quantum information matters, followed by an experiment done by Lamei-Rashti and his collaborator, by which the bell inequality on p-p scattering is violated. We then, by using the goal of his experiment, thought to arrange POVM formalism for a possible teleportation of two particle states, via nuclear magnetic spin of four entangled hydrogen like atoms.
Quantum light spectroscopy, providing novel molecular information non-accessible by classical light, necessitates new computational tools when applied for complex molecular systems. We introduce two computational protocols for the molecular nuclear wave packet dynamics interacting with an entangled photon pair to produce the entangled two-photon absorption signal. The first involves summing over transition pathways in a temporal grid defined by two light-matter interaction times accompanied by the field correlation functions of quantum light. The signal is obtained by averaging over the two-ti…
Dynamical polarization of nuclear spin ensembles is of central importance for magnetic resonance studies, precision sensing and for applications in quantum information theory. Here we propose a scheme to generate long-lived singlet pairs in an unpolarized nuclear spin ensemble which is dipolar coupled to the electron spins of a Nitrogen Vacancy center in diamond. The quantum mechanical back-action induced by frequent spin-selective readout of the NV centers allows the nuclear spins to pair up into maximally entangled singlet pairs. Counterintuitively, the robustness of the pair formation to de…
The quantum photodynamics of a simple diatomic molecule with a permanent dipole immersed within an optical cavity containing a quantized radiation field is studied in detail. The chosen molecule under study, lithium fluoride (LiF), is characterized by the presence of an avoided crossing between the two lowest $^1Σ$ potential energy curves (covalent-ionic diabatic crossing). Without field, after prompt excitation from the ground state $1\; ^1Σ$, the excited nuclear wave packet moves back and forth in the upper $2\; ^1Σ$ state, but in the proximity of the avoided crossing, the non-adiabatic coup…
Entangled many body systems have recently attracted significant attention in various contexts. Among them, spin squeezed atoms and ions have raised interest in the field of precision measurements, as they allow to overcome quantum noise of uncorrelated particles. Precise quantum state engineering is also required as a resource for quantum computation, and spin squeezing can be used to create multi-partite entangled states. Two-mode spin squeezed systems have been used for elementary quantum communication protocols. Until now spin squeezing has been always achieved via generation of entanglemen…
Heisenberg in 1929 introduced the "collapse of the wavepacket" into quantum theory. We review here an experiment at Berkeley which demonstrated several aspects of this idea. In this experiment, a pair of daughter photons was produced in an entangled state, in which the sum of their two energies was equal to the sharp energy of their parent photon, in the nonlinear optical process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The wavepacket of one daughter photon collapsed upon a measurement-at-a-distance of the other daughter's energy, in such a way that the total energy of the two-photon system …
We use Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to experimentally generate a bound entangled (more precisely: pseudo bound entangled) state, i.e. a quantum state which is non-distillable but nevertheless entangled. Our quantum system consists of three qubits. We characterize the produced state via state tomography to show that the created state has a positive partial transposition with respect to any bipartite splitting, and we use a witness operator to prove its entanglement.
We report on a Bell experiment with space-like separation assuming that the measurement time is related to gravity-induced state reduction. Two energy-time entangled photons are sent through optical fibers and directed into unbalanced interferometers at two receiving stations separated by 18 km. At each station, the detection of a photon triggers the displacement of a macroscopic mass. The timing ensures space-like separation from the moment a photon enters its interferometer until the mass has moved. 2-photon interference fringes with a visibility of up to 90.5% are obtained, leading to a vio…
Quantum mechanical phase factors can be related to dynamical effects or to the geometrical properties of a trajectory in a given space - either parameter space or Hilbert space. Here, we experimentally investigate a quantum mechanical phase factor that reflects the topology of the SO(3) group: since rotations by $π$ around antiparallel axes are identical, this space is doubly connected. Using pairs of nuclear spins in a maximally entangled state, we subject one of the spins to a cyclic evolution. If the corresponding trajectory in SO(3) can be smoothly deformed to a point, the quantum state at…
We demonstrate coherent control of two nuclear spins mediated by the magnetic resonance of a hyperfine-coupled electron spin. This control is used to create a double nuclear coherence in one of the two electron spin manifolds, starting from an initial thermal state, in direct analogy to the creation of an entangled (Bell) state from an initially pure unentangled state. We identify challenges and potential solutions to obtaining experimental gate fidelities useful for quantum information processing in this type of system.
In this work, we have been working on the concept of quantum entanglement. At first, we studied the theory of entanglement in its characterization and measurement, introducing a new scheme for detection of entanglement. The new approach links molecular-spin entities involving nuclear spins to quantum computing as more appropriate physical systems of interest. Then, we continued with the realization of entanglement in experiments. NMR has been the first choice due to its well approved advantages for quantum computing. NMR, however, has not been an appropriate system for demonstrating entangled …
Multirate characterization of relaxation mechanisms for two nonequivalent nuclear spins 1/2 in a liquid using maximally entangled pseudo-pure quantum states
There are hints that the connectivity of space-time in quantum gravity could emerge from entanglement, and it has further been proposed that any two entangled particles may be connected by a quantum wormhole. One way to test this proposal is by probing the electric field of an entangled charged particle to determine whether its electric field leaks through the putative wormhole. In addition, if such a wormhole is traversable, then it could be possible for the collapse of the wave function to occur in a causal manner, with information about the collapse travelling through the wormhole at the sp…
Co-variance matrix formalism gives powerful entanglement criteria for continuous as well as finite dimensional systems. We use this formalism to study a mixed channel spin-1 system which is well known in nuclear reactions. A spin-j state can be visualized as being made up of 2j spinors which are represented by a constellation of 2j points on a Bloch sphere using Majorana construction. We extend this formalism to visualize an entangled mixed spin-1 system.
Building a quantum repeater network for long distance quantum communication requires photons and quantum registers that comprise qubits for interaction with light, good memory capabilities and processing qubits for storage and manipulation of photons. Here we demonstrate a key step, the coherent transfer of a photon in a single solid-state nuclear spin qubit with an average fidelity of 98% and storage over 10 seconds. The storage process is achieved by coherently transferring a photon to an entangled electron-nuclear spin state of a nitrogen vacancy centre in diamond, confirmed by heralding th…

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect centers in diamond are strong candidates to generate entangled states in solid-state environments even at room temperature. Quantum correlations in spatially separated NV systems, for distances between NVs ranging from a few nanometers to a few kilometers, have been recently reported. In the present work we consider the entanglement transfer from two- mode microwave squeezed (entangled) photons, which are in resonance with the two lowest NV electron spin states, to initially unentangled NV centers. We first demonstrate that the entanglement transfer process from qu…
The Posner molecule (calcium phosphate trimer), has been hypothesized to function as a biological quantum information processor due to its supposedly long-lived entangled $^{31}$P nuclear spin states. This hypothesis was challenged by our recent finding that the molecule lacks a well-defined rotational axis of symmetry -- an essential assumption in the proposal for Posner-mediated neural processing -- and exists as an asymmetric dynamical ensemble. Following up, we investigate here the spin dynamics of the molecule's entangled $^{31}$P nuclear spins within the asymmetric ensemble. Our simulati…
A sufficient condition for the spatial collapse in an infinite system of interacting Bose particles is obtained on the basis of the variational principle with the use of trial functions with the Jastrow pair correlation factors. The instability of a hypothetical infinite system of $α$-particles with respect to the spatial collapse is shown under the assumption of the Ali - Bodmer interaction potentials between such Bose particles. Thus, it becomes clear why the hypothetical nuclear matter is naturally treated with the use of at least the nucleon degrees of freedom.
We first consider the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox for the system of two particles with spin 1/2 with entangled spins in first-quantized quantum mechanics (QM). If measurement is governed by wavefunction collapse, then gedanken experiments show that a number of fundamental principles including conservation of angular momentum and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle can be violated. We conclude that the collapse of the spin part of the wavefunction cannot happen and therefore an EPR paradox does not arise for this system. QM unitarity alone is sufficient to rule out "spooky" action at…
The problem of dipole-dipole decoherence of nuclear spins is considered for strongly entangled spin cluster. Our results show that its dynamics can be described as the decoherence due to interaction with a composite bath consisting of fully correlated and uncorrelated parts. The correlated term causes the slower decay of coherence at larger times. The decoherence rate scales up as a square root of the number of spins giving the linear scaling of the resulting error. Our theory is consistent with recent experiment reported in decoherence of correlated spin clusters.
Atomic isotope shifts (ISs) are the isotope-dependent energy differences in the atomic electron energy levels. These shifts serve an important role in atomic and nuclear physics, and particularly in the latter as signatures of nuclear structure. Recently ISs have been suggested as unique probes of beyond Standard Model (SM) physics, under the condition that they be determined significantly more precisely than current state of the art. In this work we present a simple and robust method for measuring ISs with ions in a Paul trap, by taking advantage of Hilbert subspaces that are insensitive to c…
A parity deformed Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) is introduced, which describes an interaction of a two-level atom with a $λ$-deformed quantized field. In the rotating wave approximation (RWA), all eigen-values and eigen-functions of this model are obtained exactly. Assuming that initially the field is prepared in the Wigner cat state (WCS) and the two-level atom is in the excited state, it has been shown that the atomic Rabi oscillations exhibit a quasi-periodic behavior in the collapse and revival patterns. The influence of the deformation parameter on the time evolution of non-classical featur…
