This paper gives a representation of the most general positive operator valued measure in Minkowski space-time, covariant with respect to the Poincare' group. It provides the correct mathematical description of the space-time coordinates of a quantum event, described by a quantum object with suitable properties. It is known that these coordinates cannot be represented by self-adjoint operators or by the corresponding projection valued measure.
Recently it has been proposed, using the formalism of positive-operator-valued measures, a possible definition of quantum coordinates for events in the context of quantum mechanics. In this short note we analyze this definition from the point of view of local algebras in the framework of local quantum theories.
The present paper deals with the quantum coordinates of an event in space-time, individuated by a quantum object. It is known that these observables cannot be described by self-adjoint operators or by the corresponding spectral projection-valued measure. We describe them by means of a positive-operator-valued (POV) measure in the Minkowski space-time, satisfying a suitable covariance condition with respect to the Poincare' group. This POV measure determines the probability that a measurement of the coordinates of the event gives results belonging to a given set in space-time. We show that this…
We study the variances of the coordinates of an event considered as quantum observables in a Poincare' covariant theory. The starting point is their description in terms of a covariant positive-operator-valued measure on the Minkowski space-time. Besides the usual uncertainty relations, we find stronger inequalities involving the mass and the centre-of-mass angular momentum of the object that defines the event. We suggest that these inequalities may help to clarify some of the arguments which have been given in favour of a gravitational quantum limit to the accuracy of time and space measureme…
We construct an exactly solvable PT-symmetric example of Sturmian bound states which exist in the absence of any confining potential. Their origin is purely topological -- these states live on certain nontrivial contours of complex coordinates.
We develop simple rules for performing integrals over products of distributions in coordinate space. Such products occur in perturbation expansions of path integrals in curvilinear coordinates, where the interactions contain terms of the form dot q^2 q^n, which give rise to highly singular Feynman integrals. The new rules ensure the invariance of perturbatively defined path integrals under coordinate transformations.
In this tenth paper of the series we aim at showing that our formalism, using the Wigner-Moyal Infinitesimal Transformation together with classical mechanics, endows us with the ways to quantize a system in any coordinate representation we wish. This result is necessary if one even think about making general relativistic extensions of the quantum formalism. Besides, physics shall not be dependent on the specific representation we use and this result is necessary to make quantum theory consistent and complete.
We consider a general symplectic transformation (also known as linear canonical transformation) of quantum-mechanical observables in a quantized version of a finite-dimensional system with configuration space isomorphic to $ \mathbb{R}^{q} $. Using the formalism of rigged Hilbert spaces, we define eigenstates for all the observables. Then we work out the explicit form of the corresponding transformation of these eigenstates. A few examples are included at the end of the paper.
Quantum mechanics is often developed in the position representation, but this is not necessary, and one can perform calculations in a representation-independent fashion, even for wavefunctions. In this work, we illustrate how one can determine wavefunctions, aside from normalization, using only operators and how those operators act on state vectors. To do this in plane polar and spherical coordinates requires one to convert the translation operator into those coordinates. As examples of this approach, we illustrate the solution of the Coulomb problem in two and three dimensions without needing…
We show that two parties far apart can use shared entangled states and classical communication to align their coordinate systems with a very high fidelity. Moreover compared with previous methods proposed for such a task, i.e. sending parallel or anti-parallel pairs or groups of spin states, our method has the extra advantages of using single qubit measurements and also being secure, so that third parties do not extract any information about the aligned coordinate system established between the two parties. The latter property is important in many other quantum information protocols in which m…
The quantum statistical dynamics of a position coordinate x coupled to a reservoir requires theoretically two copies of the position coordinate within the reduced density matrix description. One coordinate moves forward in time while the other coordinate moves backward in time. It is shown that quantum dissipation induces, in the plane of the forward and backward motions, a noncommutative geometry. The noncommutative geometric plane is a consequence of a quantum dissipation induced phase interference which is closely analogous to the Aharanov-Bohm effect.
We consider a coalitional game with the same payoff for all players. To maximize the payoff, the players need to use one collective strategy, if all players are in certain states, and the other strategy otherwise. The current state of each player changes according to external conditions and is not known to the other players. In one example of such a game, quantum entanglement between players results in the optimal payoff thrice the maximal payoff for unentangled players.
The Born-Jordan method for constructing the quantum condition of the Matrix Mechanics is pointed out to be inappropriate in the present work. We modify this method and reconstruct the quantum condition by setting up a new expression for the Bohr quantum condition with the help of the (n,n) elements of the matrix $\oint\hat{p}(t){\rm d}\hat{x}(t)$.
The conditions for observation of the particle coordinates, required by logic of the Special Relativity and filtering the quantum field effects, are described. A general relation between the corresponding density of probability and the wave function is found. It is a relativistic invariant describing probability of the particle emergences in space -time. This density is concretized for bosons, both scalar and vector (including photon), charged and neutral, also electron. The Heisenberg's uncertainty relations have been approved in regards to relativistic particle. As applied to the quantum fie…
We present a constructive control scheme for solving quantum state engineering problems based on a parametrization of the state vector in terms of complex hyperspherical coordinates. Unlike many control schemes based on factorization of unitary operators the scheme gives explicit expressions for all the Euler angles in terms of the hyperspherical coordinates of the initial and final state. The factorization, when applicable, has added benefits that phase rotations can be combined and performed concurrently. The control procedure can be realized using a simple bang-bang or square-wave-function …
This note proposes a paradigm and coordinate system that extends flat, four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime to a broader framework that identifies an event not only in space and in time, but also in terms of possible world, with a third category of coordinates called ``hap'' modelling contingency and counterfactuals. Semantically, hap is based on a Bohmian-like configuration space, in which initial conditions at a specific moment in time uniquely identify a trajectory. This framework can be used to support reasonings that rigorously distinguish between causal dependencies (through time), stati…
Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics may be used to construct reflectionless potentials and phase-equivalent potentials. The exactly solvable case of the $λsech^2$ potential is used to show that for certain values of the strength $λ$ the phase-equivalent singular potential arising from the elimination of all the boundstates is identical to the original potential evaluated at a point shifted in the complex cordinate space. This equivalence has the consequence that certain general relations valid for reflectionless potentials and phase-equivalent potentials lead to hitherto unknown identities satisf…
To see the back reaction of the Hawking radiation in a dynamical spacetime of the spherical gravitational collapse, we explicitly calculate the weak value of the energy-momentum tensor of the massless scalar field. The background geometry of a collapsing dust sphere is specified by using the Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates, in which the time coordinate coincides with the proper time of a free-falling observer and the metric tensor is regular at the event horizon. The result is that in the remote future the weak value diverges at the event horizon. We argue that since the semi-classical approxi…
Using a covariant background field method we calculate the one-loop quantum effective action for a particle with coordinate-dependent mass moving slowly through a one-dimensional configuration space. The procedure can easily be extended to any desired loop order.
In quantum mechanics textbooks the momentum operator is defined in the Cartesian coordinates and rarely the form of the momentum operator in spherical polar coordinates is discussed. Consequently one always generalizes the Cartesian prescription to other coordinates and falls in a trap. In this work we introduce the difficulties one faces when the question of the momentum operator in general curvilinear coordinates arises. We have tried to elucidate the points related to the definition of the momentum operator taking spherical polar coordinates as our specimen coordinate system and proposed an…
The dynamics of a spin--1/2 neutral particle possessing electric and magnetic dipole moments interacting with external electric and magnetic fields in noncommutative coordinates is obtained. Noncommutativity of space is interposed in terms of a semiclassical constrained Hamiltonian system. The relation between the quantum phase acquired by a particle interacting with an electromagnetic field and the (semi)classical force acting on the system is examined and generalized to establish a formulation of the quantum phases in noncommutative coordinates. The general formalism is applied to physical s…
We present an efficient implementation of dynamically pruned quantum dynamics, both in coordinate space and in phase space. We combine the ideas behind the biorthogonal von Neumann basis (PvB) with the orthogonalized momentum-symmetrized Gaussians (Weylets) to create a new basis, projected Weylets, that takes the best from both methods. We benchmark pruned dynamics using phase-space-localized PvB, projected Weylets, and coordinate-space-localized DVR bases, with real-world examples in up to six dimensions. We show that coordinate-space localization is most important for efficient pruning and t…
The propagator of a spinless particle is calculated from the quantum mechanical path integral formalism in static curved spacetimes endowed with event-horizons. A toy model, the Gui spacetime, and the 2D and 4D Schwarzschild black holes are considered. The role of the topology of the coordinates configuration space is emphasised in this framework. To cover entirely the above spacetimes with a single set of coordinates, tortoise coordinates are extended to complex values. It is shown that the homotopic properties of the complex tortoise configuration space imply the thermal behaviour of the pro…
This paper presents the general theory of canonical transformations of coordinates in quantum mechanics. First, the theory is developed in the formalism of phase space quantum mechanics. It is shown that by transforming a star-product, when passing to a new coordinate system, observables and states transform as in classical mechanics, i.e., by composing them with a transformation of coordinates. Then the developed formalism of coordinate transformations is transferred to a standard formulation of quantum mechanics. In addition, the developed theory is illustrated on examples of particular clas…
The classical and quantum solutions of a nonlinear model describing harmonic oscillators on the sphere and the hyperbolic plane, derived in polar coordinates in a recent paper [Phys.\ Lett.\ A 379 (2015) 1589], are extended by the inclusion of an isotonic term.
A simple derivation of the classical solutions of a nonlinear model describing a harmonic oscillator on the sphere and the hyperbolic plane is presented in polar coordinates. These solutions are then related to those in cartesian coordinates, whose form was previously guessed. In addition, the nature of the classical orthogonal polynomials entering the bound-state radial wavefunctions of the corresponding quantum model is identified.
To simulate a quantum system with continuous degrees of freedom on a quantum computer based on quantum digits, it is necessary to reduce continuous observables (primarily coordinates and momenta) to discrete observables. We consider this problem based on expanding quantum observables in series in powers of two and three analogous to the binary and ternary representations of real numbers. The coefficients of the series ("digits") are, therefore, Hermitian operators. We investigate the corresponding quantum mechanical operators and the relations between them and show that the binary and ternary …
We present an overview of the reaction coordinate approach to handling strong system-reservoir interactions in quantum thermodynamics. This technique is based on incorporating a collective degree of freedom of the reservoir (the reaction coordinate) into an enlarged system Hamiltonian (the supersystem), which is then treated explicitly. The remaining residual reservoir degrees of freedom are traced out in the usual perturbative manner. The resulting description accurately accounts for strong system-reservoir coupling and/or non-Markovian effects over a wide range of parameters, including regim…

We report the identification and construction of raising and lowering operators for the complete eigenfunctions of isotropic harmonic oscillators confined by dihedral angles, in circular cylindrical and spherical coordinates; as well as for the hydrogen atom in the same situation of confinement, in spherical, parabolic and prolate spheroidal coordinates. The actions of such operators on any eigenfunction are examined in the respective coordinates, illustrating the possibility of generating the complete bases of eigenfunctions in the respective coordinates for both physical systems. The relatio…
We present a semi-analytical approach for studying quantum thermal energy transport beyond the weak system-bath coupling regime. Our treatment, which results in a renormalized, effective Hamiltonian model is based on the reaction coordinate method. In our technique, applied to the nonequilibrium spin-boson model, a collective coordinate is extracted from each environment and added into the system to construct an enlarged system. After performing additional Hamiltonian's truncation and transformation, we attain an effective two-level system with renormalized parameters, which is weakly coupled …
We report recent progress on the phase space formulation of quantum mechanics with coordinate-momentum variables, focusing more on new theory of (weighted) constraint coordinate-momentum phase space for discrete-variable quantum systems. This leads to a general coordinate-momentum phase space formulation of composite quantum systems, where conventional representations on infinite phase space are employed for continuous variables. It is convenient to utilize (weighted) constraint coordinate-momentum phase space for representing the quantum state and describing nonclassical features. Various num…
A complete classification is presented of quantum and classical superintegrable systems in $E_2$ that allow the separation of variables in polar coordinates and admit an additional integral of motion of order three in the momentum. New quantum superintegrable systems are discovered for which the potential is expressed in terms of the sixth Painlevé transcendent or in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic function.
We prove two results about Wigner distributions. Firstly, that the Wigner transform is the only sesquilinear map ${\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R}^n) \times {\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R}^n) \to {\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$ which is bounded and covariant under phase-space translations and linear symplectomorphisms. Consequently, the Wigner distributions form the only set of quasidistributions which is invariant under linear symplectic transformations. Secondly, we prove that the maximal group of (linear or non-linear) coordinate transformations that preserves the set of (pure or mixed) Wigner distributions …
The knowledge of quantum phase flow induced under the Weyl's association rule by the evolution of Heisenberg operators of canonical coordinates and momenta allows to find the evolution of symbols of generic Heisenberg operators. The quantum phase flow curves obey the quantum Hamilton's equations and play the role of characteristics. At any fixed level of accuracy of semiclassical expansion, quantum characteristics can be constructed by solving a coupled system of first-order ordinary differential equations for quantum trajectories and generalized Jacobi fields. Classical and quantum constraint…
