It is is explained why physical consistency requires substituting linear observables by nonlinear ones for quantum systems with nonlinear time evolution of pure states. The exact meaning and the concrete physical interpretation are described in full detail for a special case of the nonlinear Doebner-Goldin equation.
We derive an exact propagation scheme for nonlinear Schroedinger equations. This scheme is entirely analogous to the propagation of linear Schroedinger equations. We accomplish this by defining a special operator whose algebraic properties ensure the correct propagation. As applications, we provide a simple proof of a recent conjecture regarding higher-order integrators for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, extend it to multi-component equations, and to a new class of integrators.
The stationary nonlinear Schroedinger equation, or Gross-Pitaevskii equation, is studied for the cases of a single delta potential and a delta-shell potential. These model systems allow analytical solutions, and thus provide useful insight into the features of stationary bound, scattering and resonance states of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation. For the single delta potential, the influence of the potential strength and the nonlinearity is studied as well as the transition from bound to scattering states. Furthermore, the properties of resonance states for a repulsive delta-shell potential …
The role of double humped states in spreading of wave packets for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) with a random potential is explored and the spreading mechanism is unraveled. Comparison with an NLSE with a double-well potential is made. There are two independent affects of the nonlinearity on the double humped states for the NLSE: coupling to other states and destruction. The interplay between these effects is discussed.
In this paper we derive the Schroedinger equation by assuming it describes the time evolution of a deterministic and reversible process that leaves at each moment in time a different observable well defined; that is, it allows an accurate prediction for it. We also derive an expression for the well defined observable and apply this expression to the cases of spin precession and a free particle.
In this paper we consider a class of coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations for the fields $ψ_i$ containing complex nonlinearities, that has been obtained by requiring that the norms $|ψ_i|^2$ are conserved densities. For this class of equations we introduce a Cole-Hopf like transformation, whose effect is to reduce the complex nonlinearities into real ones, this way reducing the continuity equations of the system to the standard bilinear form. Some examples are presented to illustrate the applicability of the method. Pacs numbers: 03.50.-z, 03.65.-w, 11.30.Na, 11.40.Dw Keywords: Coupled non…
A useful semiclassical method to calculate eigenfunctions of the Schroedinger equation is the mapping to a well-known ordinary differential equation, as for example Airy's equation. In this paper we generalize the mapping procedure to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation or Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing the macroscopic wave function of a Bose-Einstein condensate. The nonlinear Schroedinger equation is mapped to the second Painleve equation, which is one of the best-known differential equations with a cubic nonlinearity. A quantization condition is derived from the connection formulae of …
Calling the quantity; 2delta(A)delta(B)/|<[A, B]>|, with non-zero denominator, the uncertainty product ratio or UPR for the pair of observables, (A, B), it is shown that any non-zero correlation coefficient between two observables raises, above unity, the lower bound of the UPR for each member of an infinite collection of pairs of incompatible observables. Conversely, any UPR is subject to lower bounds above unity determined by each of an infinite collection of correlation coefficients. This result generalizes the well known Schroedinger strengthening of the Robertson uncertainty relations (wi…
The dynamics of an initially localized wavepacket is studied for the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with a random potential, where the nonlinearity term is |ψ|^p*ψand "p" is arbitrary. Mainly short times for which the numerical calculations can be performed accurately are considered. Long time calculations are presented as well. In particular the subdiffusive behavior where the average second moment of the wavepacket is of the form <m_{2}>~t^a is computed. Contrary to former heuristic arguments, no evidence for any critical behavior as function of "p" is found. The properties of α…
We report a refinement of Robertson-Schroedinger uncertainty relation via Wigner-Yanase skew information. Besides the well known quantum uncertainty arising from the noncommutativity of observables, there is classical uncertainty arising from the mixedness of the states that is quantified by the difference between the variance and the skew information. Our refined uncertainty relation for canonical observables is saturated by all the Gaussian states, pure or mixed, and thus provides an alternative measure for the non-Gaussianity of quantum states. Generalizations to the case of metric adjusted…
We show how the Schroedinger Uncertainty Relation for a pair of observables can be deduced using the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality plus successive applications of the commutation relation involving the two observables. Our derivation differs from the original one in the sense that we do not need the expansion of the product of these two observables in a sum of symmetrical and anti-symmetrical operators.
Canonical coordinates for both the Schroedinger and the nonlinear Schroedinger equations are introduced, making more transparent their Hamiltonian structures. It is shown that the Schroedinger equation, considered as a classical field theory, shares with the nonlinear Schroedinger, and more generally with Liouville completely integrable field theories, the existence of a "recursion operator" which allows for the construction of infinitely many conserved functionals pairwise commuting with respect to the corresponding Poisson bracket. The approach may provide a good starting point to get a clea…
We constructed the representation of contextual probabilistic dynamics in the complex Hilbert space. Thus dynamics of the wave function can be considered as Hilbert space projections of realistic dynamics in a ``prespace''. The basic condition for representing of the prespace-dynamics is the law of statistical conservation of energy -- conservation of probabilities. Construction of the dynamical representation is an important step in the development of contextual statistical viewpoint to quantum processes. But the contextual statistical model is essentially more general than the quantum one. T…
The well known interpretational difficulties with nonlinear Schrödinger and von Neumann equations can be reduced to the problem of computing multiple-time correlation functions in the absence of Heisenberg picture. Having no Heisenberg picture one often resorts to Zeno-type reasoning which explicitly involves the projection postulate as a means of computing conditional and joint probabilities. Although the method works well in linear quantum mechanics, it completely fails for nonlinear evolutions. We propose an alternative way of performing the same task in linear quantum mechanics and show th…
The Schroedinger equation with the nonlinear term is derived by the natural generalization of the hydrodynamical model of quantum mechanics. The nonlinear term appears to be logically necessary because it enables explanation of the classical limit of the wave function, the collaps of the wave function and solves the Schroedinger cat paradox.
In this paper we give a sharper condition for the blow-up of the solution to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation with free/Stark/quadratic potential by improving the well known Zakharov-Glassey's method.
We consider a wide class of nonlinear canonical quantum systems described by a one-particle Schroedinger equation containing a complex nonlinearity. We introduce a nonlinear unitary transformation which permits us to linearize the continuity equation. In this way we are able to obtain a new quantum system obeying to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a real nonlinearity. As an application of this theory we consider a few already studied Schroedinger equations as that containing the nonlinearity introduced by the exclusion-inclusion principle, the Doebner-Goldin equation and others. We determine conditions under which a generic gauge invariant nonautonomous and inhomogeneous nonlinear partial differential equation in the two-dimensional space-time continuum can be transform into standard autonomous forms. In addition to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation, important examples include the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation, the quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation. This approach provides a mathematical description of nonstationary media supporting unidimensional signal propagation and/or total field trapping. In particular, we …
We present a class of nonlinear Schroedinger equations (NLSEs) describing, in the mean field approximation, systems of interacting particles. This class of NLSEs is obtained generalizing expediently the approach proposed in Ref. [G.K. Phys. Rev. A 55, 941 (1997)], where a classical system obeying to an exclusion-inclusion principle is quantized using the Nelson stochastic quantization. The new class of NLSEs is obtained starting from the most general nonlinear classical kinetics compatible with a constant diffusion coefficient D=\hbar/2m. Finally, in the case of s-stationary states, we propose…
An introductory survey on the Schroedinger uncertainty relation and its minimization states is presented with minimal number of formulas and some historical points. The case of the two canonical observables, position and momentum, is discussed in greater detail: basic properties of the two subsets of minimization states (canonical squeezed and coherent states) are reviewed and compared. The case of two non-canonical observables is breafly outlined. Stanfard SU(1,1) and SU(2) group-related coherent states can be defined as states that minimize Schroedinger inequality for the three pairs of gene…
In the present contribution we consider a class of Schroedinger equations containing complex nonlinearities, describing systems with conserved norm $|ψ|^2$ and minimally coupled to an abelian gauge field. We introduce a nonlinear transformation which permits the linearization of the source term in the evolution equations for the gauge field, and transforms the nonlinear Schroedinger equations in another one with real nonlinearities. We show that this transformation can be performed either on the gauge field $A_μ$ or, equivalently, on the matter field $ψ$. Since the transformation does not chan…
This is a historical note. In 1981 we constructed a discrete version of quantum nonlinear Schroedinger equation. This led to our discovery of quantum determinant: it appeared in construction of anti-pod (11). Later these became important in quantum groups: it describes the center of Yang-Baxter algebra. Our paper was published in Doklady Akademii Nauk vol 259, page 76 (July l981) in Russian language.
We report localized nonlinear modes of the self-focusing and defocusing nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the generalized PT-symmetric Scarf-II, Rosen-Morse, and periodic potentials. Parameter regions are presented for broken and unbroken PT-symmetric phases of linear bounded states and the linear stability of the obtained solitons. Moreover, we numerically explore the dynamical behaviors of solitons and find stable solitons for some given parameters.
Schrödinger equations with nonlinearities concentrated in some regions of space are good models of various physical situations and have interesting mathematical properties. We show that in the semiclassical limit it is possible to separate the relevant degrees of freedom by noticing that in the regions where the nonlinearities are effective all states are suppressed but the metastable ones (resonances). In this way the description of the nonlinear regions is reduced to ordinary differential equations weakly coupled to standard Schrödinger equations valid in the linear regions. The idea is illu…
We construct one soliton solutions for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with variable quadratic Hamiltonians in a unified form by taking advantage of a complete (super) integrability of generalized harmonic oscillators. The soliton wave evolution in external fields with variable quadratic potentials is totally determined by the linear problem, like motion of a classical particle with acceleration, and the (self-similar) soliton shape is due to a subtle balance between the linear Hamiltonian (dispersion and potential) and nonlinearity in the Schroedinger equation by the standards of soliton …
Linear theory for phonon scattering by discrete breathers in the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation using the transfer matrix approach is presented. Transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained as a function of the wave vector of the input phonon. The occurrence of a nonzero transmission, which in fact becomes perfect for a symmetric breather, is shown to be connected with localized eigenmodes thresholds. In the weak-coupling limit, perfect reflection are shown to exist, which requires two scattering channels. A necessary condition for a system to have a perfect reflection is al…
We found a new kind of soliton solutions for the 5-parameter family of the potential-free Stenflo-Sabatier-Doebner-Goldin nonlinear modifications of the Schrödinger equation. In contradistinction to the "usual'' solitons like {\cosh[b(x-kt)]}^{-a}\exp[i(kx-ft)], the new {\em Finite-Length Solitons} (FLS) are nonanalytical functions with continuous first derivatives, which are different from zero only inside some finite regions of space. The simplest one-dimensional example is the function which is equal to {\cos[g(x-kt)]}^{1+d}\exp[i(kx-ft)] (with d>0) for |x-kt|<π/(2g), being identically equa…
We study arbitrary order symmetry operators for the linear Schrödinger equations with arbitrary number of spatial variables. We deduce determining equations for coefficient functions of such operators and consider in detail some cases when these equations can be explicitly solved. In addition, the complete group classification of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is presented.
This article is a review of results on the nonlinear Schroedinger / Gross-Pitaevskii equation (NLS / GP). Nonlinear bound states and aspects of their stability theory are discussed from variational and bifurcation perspectives. Nonlinear bound states, in the particular cases where the potential is a single-well, double-well potential and periodic potential, are discussed in detail. We then discuss particle-like dynamics of solitary wave solutions interacting with a potential over a large, but finite, time interval. Finally we turn to the very long time behavior of solutions. We focus on the im…
