We analyze a quantum optical memory based on the off-resonant Raman interaction of a single broadband photon, copropagating with a classical control pulse, with an atomic ensemble. The conditions under which the memory can perform optimally are found, by means of a `universal' mode decomposition. This enables the memory efficiency to be specified in terms of a single parameter, and the control field pulse shape to be determined via a simple nonlinear scaling. We apply the same decomposition to determine the optimal configurations for read-out.
Bohmian mechanics was designed to give rise to predictions identical to those derived by standard quantum mechanics, while invoking a specific interpretation of it - one which allows the classical notion of a particle to be maintained alongside a guiding wave. For this, the Bohmian model makes use of a unique quantum potential which governs the trajectory of the particle. In this work we show that this interpretation of quantum theory naturally leads to the derivation of interesting new phenomena. Specifically, we demonstrate how the fundamental Casimir-Polder force, by which atoms are attract…
I propose to resolve the controversy over the speed of collapse of quantum-mechanical wavefunctions by means of an experimental test with a modified symmetric Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer, with non-intersecting, parallel, widely separated final beams. According to the conventional collapse scenario, the coherent twin-peak atomic wavefunction in the beams of the interferometer suffers an instantaneous collapse, at infinite speed, when the atom is captured by one of the two detectors at the ends of the beams, but it remains coherent until that instant. In contrast, according to the Hellwig-K…
WavePacket is an open-source program package for the numerical simulation of quantum-mechanical dynamics. It can be used to solve time-independent or time-dependent linear Schrödinger and Liouville-von Neumann-equations in one or more dimensions. Also coupled equations can be treated, which allows to simulate molecular quantum dynamics beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Optionally accounting for the interaction with external electric fields within the semiclassical dipole approximation, WavePacket can be used to simulate experiments involving tailored light pulses in photo-induced phys…
We investigated the optimal spectral design of periodic structure of narrow lines (AFC-structure) within the inhomogeneously broadened atomic transition which are created for the implementation of broadband AFC photon echo quantum memory. The influence of the spectral design on the suppression of negative dispersion effects in the AFC-echo retrieval was studied for different spectroscopic parameters of atomic media. The maps of the assigned spectral quantum efficiency have been constructed for the created AFC-structures characterized by different spectral design, finesse and optical depth. Base…
A quantum state light-storage, using a virtual magnetic field through the ac Stark effect is proposed to combine the high overall storage efficiency and large bandwidth employing room temperature atomic vapor. In this approach, which was called the ac Stark Gradient Echo Memory (ASGEM), it has been shown the possibility to employ about a nanosecond ac Stark pulse far detuned (about 127 THz) from D1 line of rubidium and create an atomic media with the possibility to store a photon with about a GHz bandwidth with storage and retrieval efficiency of more than 90%. A contour plot of efficiency as …
Promising access to high-speed quantum networks relies on the creation of high-dimensional entangled memories that provide quantum communication with higher capacity of noisy quantum channels, thereby reducing the transmission time of information. Yet, the distribution of multidimensional entanglement between remote memory nodes is still faintly investigated. We propose an experimentally feasible protocol of deterministic generation of high-dimensional entanglement between distant multi-level atoms confined in high-finesse optical cavities and driven by laser pulses. Three-dimensional entangle…
We seek to design experimentally feasible broadband, temporally multiplexed optical quantum memory with near-term applications to telecom bands. Specifically, we devise dispersion compensation for an impedance-matched narrow-band quantum memory by exploiting Raman processes over two three-level atomic subensembles, one for memory and the other for dispersion compensation. Dispersion compensation provides impedance matching over more than a full cavity linewidth. Combined with one second spin-coherence lifetime the memory could be capable of power efficiency exceeding 90% leading to 106 modes f…
We present designs for the augmentation 'mirror' pulses of large-momentum-transfer atom interferometers that maintain their fidelity as the wavepacket momentum difference is increased. These bi-selective pulses, tailored using optimal control methods to the evolving bi-modal momentum distribution, should allow greater interferometer areas and hence increased inertial measurement sensitivity, without requiring elevated Rabi frequencies or extended frequency chirps. Using an experimentally validated model, we have simulated the application of our pulse designs to large-momentum-transfer atom int…
We propose a novel approach for solving the scattering of light onto a two-level atom coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. We first express the physical quantity of interest in terms of Feynman diagrams and treat the atom as a non-saturable linear beamsplitter. By using the atomic response to our advantage, a relevant substitution is then made that captures the nonlinearity of the atom, and the final result is obtained in terms of simple integrals over the initial incoming wavepackets. The procedure is not limited to post-scattering quantities and allows for instance to derive the atomic ex…
The shift of energy levels owing to broadband electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations, the Lamb shift, has been pivotal in the development of quantum electrodynamics and in understanding atomic spectra. Currently, small energy shifts in engineered quantum systems are of paramount importance owing to the extreme precision requirements in applications such as quantum computing. However, without a tunable environment it is challenging to resolve the Lamb shift in its original broadband case. Consequently, the observations in other than atomic systems are limited to environments comprised of narrow-ba…
A simplified theory for the wavepackets of the photons emitted during the read process of a quantum memory formed by cold atoms is provided. We arrive at analytical expressions for the single- and double-photon emissions, evidencing superradiant features in both cases. In the two-photon case, both photons are emitted in the same spatiotemporal mode, characterizing a superradiant emission of a Fock state of light with two excitations. Experiments confirm the theoretical predictions with a satisfactory agreement.
Photon echoes in rare-earth-doped crystals are studied to understand the challenges of making broadband quantum memories using the atomic frequency comb (AFC) protocol in systems with hyperfine structure. The hyperfine structure of Pr^{3+} poses an obstacle to this goal because frequencies associated with the hyperfine transitions change the simple picture of modulation at an externally imposed frequency. The current work focuses on the intermediate case where the hyperfine spacing is comparable to the comb spacing, a challenging regime that has recently been considered. Operating in this regi…
We present a self-calibrating, SI-traceable broadband Rydberg-atom-based radio-frequency (RF) electric field probe (the Rydberg Field Probe or RFP) and measurement instrument (Rydberg Field Measurement System or RFMS). The RFMS comprises an atomic RF field probe (RFP), connected by a ruggedized fiber-optic patch cord to a portable mainframe control unit with a software interface for RF measurement and analysis including real-time field readout and RF waveform visualization. The instrument employs electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) readout of spectral signatures from RF-sensitive Ry…

We analyze the storage and retrieval of intense-broadband pulses with the added effects of Doppler broadening and detuning in a $Λ$ configuration. We compute analytical solutions via the inverse scattering technique and show how the signal field is transferred to a spin-wave in the atomic medium and later retrieved by the interaction of a control pulse. Due to the intensity of the pulses, the pulse area (as defined for self-induced transparency) plays a key role in the interaction, as it determines the location of the spin wave within the medium. Additionally, we compare our results to non-ide…
A one-dimensional atom -- an atomic system coupled to a single optical mode -- is central for many applications in optical quantum technologies. Here we introduce an effective one-dimensional atom consisting of two interacting quantum emitters coupled to a cavity mode. The dipole-dipole interaction and cavity coupling gives rise to optical resonances of tunable bandwidth with a constant mode coupling. Such versatility, combined with a dynamical control of the system, opens the way to many applications. It can be used to generate single photon light pulses with continuous variable encoding in t…
We have considered theoretically the feasibility of the broadband quantum memory based on the resonant tripod-type atomic configuration. In this case, the writing of a signal field is carried out simultaneously into two channels, and characterized by an excitation of two spin waves of the atomic ensemble. With simultaneous read out from both channels quantum properties of the original signal are mapped on the retrieval pulse no worse than in the case of memory based on Lambda-type atomic configuration. At the same time new possibilities are opened up for manipulation of quantum states associat…
Most future quantum devices, including quantum computers, require control that is broadband, meaning that the rate of change of the time-dependent Hamiltonian is as fast or faster than the dynamics it generates. In many areas of quantum physics, including quantum technology, one must include dissipation and decoherence induced by the environment. While Markovian master equations provide the only really efficient way to model these effects, these master equations are derived for constant Hamiltonians (or those with a discrete set of well-defined frequencies). In 2006, Alicky, Lidar, and Zanardi…
Nonlinear interferometers that replace beamsplitters in Mach-Zehnder interferometers with nonlinear amplifiers for quantum-enhanced phase measurements have drawn increasing interest in recent years, but practical quantum sensors based on nonlinear interferometry remain an outstanding challenge. Here, we demonstrate the first practical application of nonlinear interferometry by measuring the displacement of an atomic force microscope microcantilever with quantum noise reduction of up to 3~dB below the standard quantum limit, corresponding to a quantum-enhanced measurement of beam displacement o…
Short pulses from mode-locked lasers can produce background-free atomic fluorescence by allowing temporal separation of the prompt incidental scatter from the subsequent atomic emission. We use this to improve quantum state detection of optical-frequency and electron-shelved trapped ion qubits by more than 2 orders of magnitude. For direct detection of qubits defined on atomic hyperfine structure, however, the large bandwidth of short pulses is greater than the hyperfine splitting, and repeated excitation is not qubit state selective. Here, we show that the state resolution needed for projecti…
Ensembles of solid-state optical emitters enable broadband quantum storage and transduction of photonic qubits, with applications in high-rate optical quantum networks for secure communications, global time-keeping, and interconnecting future quantum computers. To realize coherent quantum information transfer using ensembles, spin rephasing techniques are currently used to mitigate fast decoherence resulting from inhomogeneous broadening. Here we use a dense ensemble of neodymium rare-earth ions strongly coupled to a nanophotonic resonator to demonstrate that decoherence of a single photon exc…
Atomic arrays provide an important quantum optical platform with photon-mediated dipoledipole interactions, which can be engineered to realize key applications in quantum information processing. A major obstacle for such application is the fast decay of the excited states. By controlling two-band Bloch oscillations in an atomic array under external magnetic field, here we show that exotic subradiance can be realized and maintained at a time scale upto 12 orders of magnitude larger than the spontaneous decay time in atomic arrays with the finite size. The key finding is to show a way for preven…
Superradiance, characterized by the collective, coherent emission of light from an excited ensemble of emitters, generates photonic signals on timescales faster than the natural lifetime of an individual atom. The rapid exchange of coherence between atomic emitters and photonic fields in the superradiant regime enables a fast, broadband quantum memory. We demonstrate this superradiance memory mechanism in an ensemble of cold rubidium atoms and verify that this protocol is suitable for pulses on timescales shorter than the atoms' natural lifetime. Our simulations show that the superradiance mem…
