We demonstrate that scattering of particles strongly interacting in three dimensions (3D) can be suppressed at low energies in a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) confinement. The underlying mechanism is the interference of the s- and p-wave scattering contributions with large s- and p-wave 3D scattering lengths being a necessary prerequisite. This low-dimensional quantum scattering effect might be useful in "interacting" quasi-1D ultracold atomic gases, guided atom interferometry, and impurity scattering in strongly confined quantum wire-based electronic devices.
A strongly confined light field necessarily exhibits a local polarization that varies on a subwavelength scale. We demonstrate that a single optical mode of such kind can be used to selectively and simultaneously manipulate atomic ensembles that are less than a micron away from each other and equally coupled to the light field. The technique is implemented with an optical nanofiber that provides an evanescent field interface between a strongly guided optical mode and two diametric linear arrays of cesium atoms. Using this single optical mode, the two atomic ensembles can simultaneously be opti…
We compare the photoluminescence spectrum of an indium arsenide (InAs) quantum dot (QD) that is strongly coupled to a photonic crystal cavity under above band excitation (ABE) and quasi-resonant excitation (QRE). We show that off-resonant cavity feeding, which manifests itself in a bare cavity emission peak at the strong coupling point, is suppressed by as much as 40% under QRE relative to ABE. We attribute this suppression to a reduced probability of QD charging because electrons and holes are created in pairs inside the QD. We investigate the pump power dependence of the cavity feeding and s…

Increasing the number of electrons in electrostatically confined quantum dots can enable faster qubit gates. Although this has been experimentally demonstrated, a detailed quantitative understanding has been missing. Here we study one- and three-electron quantum dots in silicon/silicon-germanium heterostructures within the context of electrically-driven spin resonance (EDSR) using full configuration interaction and tight binding approaches. Our calculations show that anharmonicity of the confinement potential plays an important role: while the EDSR Rabi frequency of electrons in a harmonic pot…
We consider a method of sub-wavelength superlocalization and patterning of atomic matter waves via a two dimensional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (2D STIRAP) process. An atom initially prepared in its ground level interacts with a doughnut-shaped optical vortex pump beam and a traveling wave Stokes laser beam with a constant (top-hat) intensity profile in space. The beams are sent in a counter-intuitive temporal sequence, in which the Stokes pulse precedes the pump pulse. The atoms interacting with both the traveling wave and the vortex beam are transferred to a final state through the 2…
In this letter we investigate the possibility to attain strongly confined atomic localization using interacting Rydberg atoms in a Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) ladder configuration, where a standing-wave (SW) is used as a coupling field in the second leg of the ladder. Depending on the degree of compensation of the Rydberg level energy shift induced by the van der Waals (vdW) interaction, by the coupling field detuning, we distinguish between two antiblockade regimes, i.e. a partial antiblockade (PA) and a full antiblockade (FA). While a periodic pattern of tightly localized regions can …
We investigate exciton transport through one-dimensional molecular aggregates interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Unlike several prior theoretical studies treating the monomers as simple two-level systems, exciton-vibration coupling is explicitly included in the description of open quantum dynamics of the system. In the framework of the Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model with truncated vibrational space, we investigate the steady-state exciton transfer through both a molecular dimer and longer molecular chains. For a molecular dimer, we find that vibration-assisted exciton transfer occurs at s…
The understanding of lattice instabilities is of vast importance in material science. The famous example is the Peierls instability of one-dimensional metals and for strongly-nested Fermi surfaces in two and three dimensions. Through an analysis of H and Li chains in band theory, we find that the Bloch wave nature of the wavefunctions, if involving strong k-dependent hybridization of oppositeparity atomic states, strongly suppresses susceptibility peaks and associated instabilities and is thus essential to consider in searching for materials with strong responses to external perturbations.
We consider the dynamics of $N$ interacting bosons initially exhibiting Bose-Einstein condensation. Due to an external trapping potential, the bosons are strongly confined in two spatial directions, with the transverse extension of the trap being of order $\varepsilon$. The non-negative interaction potential is scaled such that its scattering length is positive and of order $(N/\varepsilon^2)^{-1}$, the range of the interaction scales as $(N/\varepsilon^2)^{-β}$ for $β\in(0,1)$. We prove that in the simultaneous limit $N\rightarrow\infty$ and $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$, the condensation is pre…
We consider the dynamics of $N$ interacting bosons initially forming a Bose-Einstein condensate. Due to an external trapping potential, the bosons are strongly confined in two dimensions, where the transverse extension of the trap is of order $\varepsilon$. The non-negative interaction potential is scaled such that its range and its scattering length are both of order $(N/\varepsilon^2)^{-1}$, corresponding to the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling of a dilute Bose gas. We show that in the simultaneous limit $N\rightarrow\infty$ and $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$, the dynamics preserve condensation and the …
We present a microscopic semi-analytical theory for the description of organic molecules interacting strongly with a cavity mode. Exciton-vibration coupling within the molecule and exciton-cavity interaction are treated on an equal footing by employing a temperature-dependent variational approach. The interplay between strong exciton-vibration coupling and strong exciton-cavity coupling gives rise to a hybrid ground state, which we refer to as the lower polaron polariton. Explicit expressions for the ground-state wave function, the zero-temperature quasiparticle weight of the lower polaron pol…

We create a one-dimensional strongly correlated quantum gas of $^{133}$Cs atoms with attractive interactions by direct laser cooling in 300~ms. After compressing and cooling the optically trapped atoms to the vibrational ground state along two tightly confined directions, the emergence of a non-Gaussian time-of-flight distribution along the third, weakly confined direction reveals that the system enters a quantum degenerate regime. We observe a strong reduction of two- and three-body spatial correlations and infer that the atoms are directly cooled into a highly correlated excited metastable s…
Optical lattice clocks have the potential for extremely high frequency stability owing to the simultaneous interrogation of many atoms, but this precision may come at the cost of systematic inaccuracy due to atomic interactions. Density-dependent frequency shifts can occur even in a clock that uses fermionic atoms if they are subject to inhomogeneous optical excitation [1, 2]. Here we present a seemingly paradoxical solution to this problem. By dramatically increasing the strength of atomic interactions, we suppress collisional shifts in lattice sites containing $N$ > 1 atoms; strong interacti…
In one dimension, the study of magnetism dates back to the dawn of quantum mechanics when Bethe solved the famous Heisenberg model that describes quantum behaviour in magnetic systems. In the last decade, one-dimensional systems have become a forefront area of research driven by the realization of the Tonks-Girardeau gas using cold atomic gases. Here we prove that one-dimensional fermionic and bosonic systems with strong short-range interactions are solvable in arbitrary confining geometries by introducing a new energy-functional technique and obtaining the full spectrum of energies and eigens…
Suppression of exciton dephasing in quantum dots through ultrafast multipulse control
我们研究了Viola和Lloyd [Phys. Rev.
We consider a one-dimensional system of particles with strong zero-range interactions. This system can be mapped onto a spin chain of the Heisenberg type with exchange coefficients that depend on the external trap. In this paper, we present an algorithm that can be used to compute these exchange coefficients. We introduce an open source code CONAN (Coefficients of One-dimensional N-Atom Networks) which is based on this algorithm. CONAN works with arbitrary external potentials and we have tested its reliability for system sizes up to around 35 particles. As illustrative examples, we consider a …
