Focusing of atoms with light potentials is studied. In particular, we consider strongly confined, cylindrical symmetric potential, and demonstrate their applications in both red and blue-detuned focusing of atoms. We also study the influence of aberrations, and find that a resolution of 1 nm should in principle be possible.
Shell confined atom can serve as a generalized model to explain both \emph{free} and \emph{confined} condition. In this scenario, an atom is trapped inside two concentric spheres of inner $(R_{a})$ and outer $(R_{b})$ radius. The choice of $R_{a}, R_{b}$ renders four different quantum mechanical systems. In hydrogenic atom, they are termed as (a) free hydrogen atom (FHA) (b) confined hydrogen atom (CHA) (c) shell-confined hydrogen atom (SCHA) (d) left-confined hydrogen atom (LCHA). By placing $R_{a}, R_{b}$ at the location of radial nodes of respective \emph{free} $n,\ell$ states, a new kind o…
Resonance fluorescence from atomic systems consists of a single spectral peak that evolves into a Mollow triplet for a strong excitation field. Photons from different peaks of the triplet show distinct photon correlation that make the fluorescence a useful light source for quantum information purpose. We characterize the fluorescence of a single optically trapped $^{87}$Rb atom that is excited resonantly at different power levels. Second-order correlation measurements reveal the single photon nature of the fluorescence concurrently with Rabi oscillations of a strongly excited atom. The asymmet…
We have developed an efficient approach for treating low-dimensional few-body processes in confined geometry of atomic and hybrid atom-ion traps. It based on the split-operator method in 2D discrete-variable representation (DVR) suggested by V. Melezhik for integration of the few-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We give a brief review of the application to resonant ultracold atomic processes and discuss our latest results on hybrid atomic-ion systems. Prospects for the application of the method in other hot problems of the physics of low-dimensional few-particle systems are als…
Several well-known statistical measures similar to \emph{LMC} and \emph{Fisher-Shannon} complexity have been computed for confined hydrogen atom in both position ($r$) and momentum ($p$) spaces. Further, a more generalized form of these quantities with Rényi entropy ($R$) is explored here. The role of scaling parameter in the exponential part is also pursued. $R$ is evaluated taking order of entropic moments $α, β$ as $(\frac{2}{3},3)$ in $r$ and $p$ spaces. Detailed systematic results of these measures with respect to variation of confinement radius $r_c$ is presented for low-lying states suc…
Following a strong analogy with two-dimensional physics, the three-body pseudo-potential in one dimension is derived. The Born approximation is then considered in the context of ultracold atoms in a linear harmonic waveguide. In the vicinity of the dimer threshold a direct connection is made between the zero-range potential and the dimensional reduction of the three-body Schr{ö}dinger equation.
We consider a method of sub-wavelength superlocalization and patterning of atomic matter waves via a two dimensional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (2D STIRAP) process. An atom initially prepared in its ground level interacts with a doughnut-shaped optical vortex pump beam and a traveling wave Stokes laser beam with a constant (top-hat) intensity profile in space. The beams are sent in a counter-intuitive temporal sequence, in which the Stokes pulse precedes the pump pulse. The atoms interacting with both the traveling wave and the vortex beam are transferred to a final state through the 2…
We propose a new way for sympathetic cooling of ions in an electromagnetic Paul trap: it implies the use for this purpose of cold buffer atoms in the region of atom-ion confinement-induced resonance (CIR). The problem is that the unavoidable micromotion of the ion and the long-range nature of its interaction with the environment of colder atoms in a hybrid atomic-ion trap prevent its sympathetic cooling. We show that the destructive effect of ion micromotion on its sympathetic cooling can however be suppressed in the vicinity of the atom-ion CIR. The origin of this is the "fermionization" of t…
Confinement of atoms inside various cavities has been studied for nearly eight decades. However, the Compton profile for such systems has not yet been investigated. Here we construct the Compton profile (CP) for a H atom radially confined inside a \emph{hard} spherical enclosure, as well as in \emph{free condition}. Some exact analytical relations for the CP's of circular or nodeless states of free atom is presented. By means of a scaling idea, this has been further extended to the study of an H-like atom trapped inside an impenetrable cavity. The accuracy of these constructed CP has been conf…
The present work studies aspects of the electronic correlation in confined H$^{-}$, He and Li$^+$ atoms in their ground states using the informational entropies. In this way, different variational wavefunctions are employed in order of better take account of Coulomb correlation. The obtained values for the $S_r$, $S_p$ and $S_t$ entropies are sensitive in relation to Coulomb correlation effects. In the strong confinement regime, the effects of the Coulomb correlation are negligible and the employment of the models of independent particle and two non-interacting electrons confined by a impenetr…
We theoretically study the focusing of a quasi-continuous atom laser beam of rubidium-85 ($^{85}$Rb). A two-sate model analysis based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is used which comprises the effects of two-body atom-atom interactions and three-body recombination losses. Utilizing optical focusing potentials such as harmonic potentials, the essential factors such as the width, peak density and atom loss rate of the focused atom laser beam profile are investigated. Our analysis predicts that using an atom laser offers a dramatic improvement in resolution of up to $8$ nm.
Exactly solvable model of two Rydberg-dressed atoms moving in a quasi-two-dimensional harmonic trap is introduced and its properties are investigated. Depending on the strength of inter-particle interactions and the critical range of the potential, the two-particle eigenstates are classified with respect to the excitations of the center-of-mass motion, relative angular momentum, and relative distance variable. Having these solutions in hand, we discuss inter-particle correlations as functions of interaction parameters. We also present a straightforward prescription of how to generalize obtaine…
We investigate how quantum signatures can emerge in a single atom heat engine consisting of an atom confined in a tapered trap and subject to hot and cold thermal reservoirs. A similar system was realized experimentally in Ref.[1]. We model such a system using a quadratic optomechanical model and identify an effective Otto cycle in the system's dynamics. We compare the engine's performance in the quantum and classical regimes by evaluating the power dissipated. We find that lowering the temperature is insufficient to make the single atom engine of Ref.[1] a genuine quantum-enhanced heat engine…
The two-body scattering amplitude and energy spectrum of confined ultracold atoms are of fundamental importance for studies of ultracold atom physics. For many systems, one can efficiently calculate these quantities via the zero-range Huang-Yang pseudopotential (HYP), in which the interatomic interaction is characterized by the scattering length $a$. Furthermore, when the scattering length is dependent on the kinetic energy $\varepsilon_{\rm r}$ of two-atom relative motion, the results are applicable for a broad energy region. However, when the free Hamiltonian of atomic internal state does no…
In this letter we investigate the possibility to attain strongly confined atomic localization using interacting Rydberg atoms in a Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) ladder configuration, where a standing-wave (SW) is used as a coupling field in the second leg of the ladder. Depending on the degree of compensation of the Rydberg level energy shift induced by the van der Waals (vdW) interaction, by the coupling field detuning, we distinguish between two antiblockade regimes, i.e. a partial antiblockade (PA) and a full antiblockade (FA). While a periodic pattern of tightly localized regions can …
A rich literature has been produced on the quantum states of atoms and molecules confined into infinite potential wells with a specified symmetry. Apart from their interest as basic quantum systems, confined atoms and molecules are useful models for extreme high pressure states of matter, spectroscopically active defects in solid lattices and chemical species in molecular cages. A most important case is that of H$_2^+$ for which little or no results are available in the case of polyhedral confinement. The approach of the authors makes use of the Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method. The advantag…
We theoretically investigate the optical focusing of a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate onto a planar surface. Our analysis uses a Gaussian variational method that includes the effects of two-body atom-atom interactions and three-body recombination losses. The essential factors such as the width, peak density and atom loss rate of the focused BEC profile on the surface are investigated and compared to Gross-Pitaevskii numerical simulations. We find a reasonable agreement in the results between our analytical approach and the numerical simulations. Our analysis predicts that condensates of $10…
An atom placed inside a cavity of finite dimension offers many interesting features, and thus has been a topic of great current activity. This work proposes a density functional approach to pursue both ground and excited states of a multi-electron atom under a spherically impenetrable enclosure. The radial Kohn-Sham (KS) equation has been solved by invoking a physically motivated work-function-based exchange potential, which offers near-Hartree-Fock-quality results. Accurate numerical eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are obtained through a generalized pseudospectral method (GPS) fulfilling the D…
We investigate the many-body state and the static and the dynamic behaviour of the pair-correlation function of a Bose-Einstein condensate with a finite atom number, which is confined in a quasi-one-dimensional toroidal/annular potential, both for repulsive, and for attractive interactions. We link the dynamic pair-correlation function that we evaluate with the problem of quantum time crystals. For weak repulsive interatomic interactions and a finite number of atoms the pair-correlation function shows a periodic temporal behaviour, which disappears in the limit of a large atom number, in agree…
Shannon entropy ($S$), R{é}nyi entropy ($R$), Tsallis entropy ($T$), Fisher information ($I$) and Onicescu energy ($E$) have been explored extensively in both \emph{free} H atom (FHA) and \emph{confined} H atom (CHA). For a given quantum state, accurate results are presented by employing respective \emph{exact} analytical wave functions in $r$ space. The $p$-space wave functions are generated from respective Fourier transforms$-$for FHA these can be expressed analytically in terms of Gegenbauer polynomials, whereas in CHA these are computed numerically. \emph{Exact} mathematical expressions of…
We propose a straightforward implementation of the phenomenon of diffractive focusing with uniform atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Both, analytical as well as numerical methods not only illustrate the influence of the atom-atom interaction on the focusing factor and the focus time, but also allow us to derive the optimal conditions for observing focusing of this type in the case of interacting matter waves.
