We investigate the long-time limit of quantum localization of the kicked Rydberg atom. The kicked Rydberg atom is shown to possess in addition to the quantum localization time $τ_L$ a second cross-over time $t_D$ where quantum dynamics diverges from classical dynamics towards increased instability. The quantum localization is shown to vanish as either the strength of the kicks at fixed principal quantum number or the quantum number at fixed kick strength increases. The survival probability as a function of frequency in the transient localization regime $τ_L<t<t_D$ is characterized by highly irregular, fractal-like fluctuations.
A kick from a unipolar half-cycle pulse (HCP) can redistribute population and shift the relative phase between states in a radial Rydberg wave packet. We have measured the quantum coherence properties following the kick, and show that selected coherences can be destroyed by applying an HCP at specific times. Quantum mechanical simulations show that this is due to redistribution of the angular momentum in the presence of noise. These results have implications for the storage and retrieval of quantum information in the wave packet.
We study the photon statistics of weak coherent pulses propagating through a cold Rydberg atomic ensemble in the regime of Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency. We show experimentally that the value of the second-order autocorrelation function of the transmitted light strongly depends on the position within the pulse and heavily varies during the transients of the pulse. In particular, we show that the falling edge of the transmitted pulse displays much lower values than the rest of the pulse. We derive a theoretical model that quantitatively predicts our results and explains the p…
We describe a method allowing transient suppression of decoherence effects on the atom-optics realization of the kicked rotor. The system is prepared in an initial state with a momentum distribution concentrated in an interval much sharper than the Brillouin zone; the measure of the momentum distribution is restricted to this interval of quasimomenta: As most of the atoms undergoing decoherence processes fall outside this detection range and thus are not detected, the measured signal is effectively decoherence-free.

We realize a non-invasive electrometer based on state engineering in a Rydberg hydrogenic manifold. A quantum interference process involving states with very different dipoles measures directly the time correlation of a stochastic electric field, with a 200~ns time resolution and with a $83.2\pm1.4$~mV/m single-atom sensitivity, beyond the Standard Quantum Limit in this context. This quantum-enabled correlation electrometer opens the way to applications in mesoscopic physics, e.g. for the study of individual charge transits in nano-structures.
The generation of entanglement produced by a local potential interaction in a bipartite system is investigated. The degree of entanglement is contrasted with the underlying classical dynamics for a Rydberg molecule (a charged particle colliding on a kicked top). Entanglement is seen to depend on the structure of classical phase-space rather than on the global dynamical regime. As a consequence regular classical dynamics can in certain circumstances be associated with higher entanglement generation than chaotic dynamics. In addition quantum effects also come into play: for example partial reviv…
We show that transient supersolid quantum states of Rydberg-excitations can be created dynamically from a Mott insulator of ground state atoms in a 2D optical-lattices by irradiating it with short laser pulses. The structure of these supersolids is tunable via the choice of laser parameters. We calculate first, second and fourth order correlation functions as well as the pressure to characterize the supersolid states. Our study is based on the development of a general theoretical tool for obtaining the dynamics of strongly interacting quantum systems whose initial state is accurately known. We…
The quantum-resonant evolution of the mean kinetic energy (MKE) of the kicked particle is studied in detail on different time scales for {\em general} kicking potentials. It is shown that the asymptotic time behavior of a wave-packet MKE is typically a linear growth with bounded fluctuations having a simple number-theoretical origin. For a large class of wave packets, the MKE is shown to be exactly the superposition of its asymptotic behavior and transient logarithmic corrections. Both fluctuations and transients can be significant for not too large times but they may vanish identically under …
The observation of the Stark-tuned Förster resonances between Rydberg atoms excited by narrowband cw laser radiation requires usage of a Stark-switching technique in order to excite the atoms first in a fixed electric field and then to induce the interactions in a varied electric field, which is scanned across the Förster resonance. In our experiments with a few cold Rb Rydberg atoms we have found that the transients at the edges of the electric pulses strongly affect the line shapes of the Förster resonances, since the population transfer at the resonances occurs on a time scale of $\sim$100 …
The dynamics of autoionizing Rydberg states of oxygen are studied using attosecond transient absorption technique, where extreme ultraviolet (XUV) initiates molecular polarization and near infrared (NIR) pulse perturbs its evolution. Transient absorption spectra show positive optical density (OD) change in the case of $nsσ_g$ and $ndπ_g$ autoionizing states of oxygen and negative OD change for $ndσ_g$ states. Multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock (MCTDHF) calculation are used to simulate the transient absorption spectra and their results agree with experimental observations. The time …
Exploring controllable interactions lies at the heart of quantum science. Neutral Rydberg atoms provide a versatile route toward flexible interactions between single quanta. Previous efforts mainly focused on the excitation annihilation~(EA) effect of the Rydberg blockade due to its robustness against interaction fluctuation. We study another effect of the Rydberg blockade, namely, the transition slow-down~(TSD). In TSD, a ground-Rydberg cycling in one atom slows down a Rydberg-involved state transition of a nearby atom, which is in contrast to EA that annihilates a presumed state transition. …
Decoherence affects all quantum systems, natural or artificial, and is the primary obstacle impeding quantum technologies. We show theoretically that for a Rydberg qubit in a Bose condensed environment, experiments can image the system-environment interface that is central for decoherence. High precision absorption images of the condensed environment will be able to capture transient signals that show the real time build up of a mesoscopic entangled state in the environment. This is possible before decoherence sources other than the condensate itself can kick in, since qubit decoherence time-s…

Out-of-time-ordered correlation functions (OTOC's) are presently being extensively debated as quantifiers of dynamical chaos in interacting quantum many-body systems. We argue that in quantum spin and fermionic systems, where all local operators are bounded, an OTOC of local observables is bounded as well and thus its exponential growth is merely transient. As a better measure of quantum chaos in such systems, we propose, and study, the density of the OTOC of extensive sums of local observables, which can exhibit indefinite growth in the thermodynamic limit. We demonstrate this for the kicked …
A formulation of quantum electrodynamics is given that applies to atoms in a strong laser field by perturbation theory in a non-relativistic regime. Dipole approximation is assumed. The dual Dyson series, here discussed by referring it to the Birkhoff theorem for singularly perturbed linear differential equations, can be applied and a perturbation series obtained transforming the Hamiltonian by a Pauli-Fierz transformation. But, if just few photons are present high-order harmonics cannot be generated. So, it is proven that odd high-order harmonics only appear when the laser field is intense an…
