Decoherence affects all quantum systems, natural or artificial, and is the primary obstacle impeding quantum technologies. We show theoretically that for a Rydberg qubit in a Bose condensed environment, experiments can image the system-environment interface that is central for decoherence. High precision absorption images of the condensed environment will be able to capture transient signals that show the real time build up of a mesoscopic entangled state in the environment. This is possible before decoherence sources other than the condensate itself can kick in, since qubit decoherence time-scales can be tuned from the order of nanoseconds to microseconds by choice of the excited Rydberg principal quantum number ν. Imaging the interface will allow detailed explorations of open quantum system concepts and may offer guidance for coherence protection in challenging scenarios with non-Markovian environments.
We propose a scheme to realize quantum networking of superconducting qubits based on the opto-mechanical interface. The superconducting qubits interact with the microwave photons, which then couple to the optical photons through the opto-mechanical interface. The interface generates a quantum link between superconducting qubits and optical flying qubits with tunable pulse shapes and carrier frequencies, enabling transmission of quantum information to other superconducting or atomic qubits. We show that the scheme works under realistic experimental conditions and it also provides a way for fast…
We present a new scheme for quantum interfaces to accomplish the interconversion of photonic qubits and spin qubits based on optomechanical resonators and the spin-orbit-induced interactions in suspended carbon nanotube quantum dots. This interface implements quantum spin transducers and further enables electrical manipulation of local electron spin qubits, which lays the foundation for all-electrical control of state transfer protocols between two distant quantum nodes in a quantum network. We numerically evaluate the state transfer processes and proceed to estimate the effect of each couplin…
We explore applications of nonlinear circuit QED with a charge qubit inductively coupled to a microwave LC resonator in the photonic engineering and ultrastrong-coupling multiphoton quantum optics. Simply sweeping the gate-voltage bias achieves arbitrary Fock-state pulsed maser, where the single qubit plays the role of artificial gain medium. Resonantly pumping the parametric qubit-resonator interface leads to the squeezing of resonator field, which is utilizable to the quantum-limited microwave amplification. Moreover, upwards and downwards multiphoton quantum jumps may be observed in the ste…
We show that optically active coupled quantum dots embedded in a superconducting microwave cavity can be used to realize a fast quantum interface between photonic and transmon qubits. Single photon absorption by a coupled quantum dot results in generation of a large electric dipole, which in turn ensures efficient coupling to the microwave cavity. Using cavity parameters achieved in prior experiments, we estimate that bi-directional microwave-optics conversion in nanosecond timescales with efficiencies approaching unity is experimentally feasible with current technology. We also outline a prot…
We propose to implement tunable interfaces for realizing universal quantum computation with topological qubits. One interface is between the topological and superconducting qubits, which can realize arbitrary single-qubit gate on the topological qubit. When two qubits are involved, the interface between the topological qubits and a microwave cavity can induce a nontrivial two-qubit gate, which can not be constructed based on braiding operations. The two interfaces, being tunable via an external magnetic flux, may serve as the building blocks towards universal quantum computation with topologic…
Explosive increase of interest in quantum computing has resulted in various proposals for generation of quantum bits or qubits, the basic quantum computing unit. The superconducting qubits of Josephson Junction are the most widely accepted and currently used, while the Ion-trap and a similar molecule-based qubits have been proposed more recently. In these methods, each qubit is generated individually with great effort. Here we proposed a new technique using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based qubit generation, by which multiple qubits can be generated. Simultaneously this provides a complet…
Samples with few hundred atoms within a few micrometer sized region of space are large enough to provide efficient cooperative absorption and emission of light, and small enough to ensure strong dipole-dipole interactions when atoms are excited into high-lying Rydberg states. Based on a recently proposed collective encoding scheme, we propose to build few-qubit quantum registers in such samples. The registers can store and transmit quantum information in the form of single photons, and they can employ entanglement pumping protocols to perform ideally in networks for scalable quantum computing …
We propose and analyze an interface between a topological qubit and a superconducting flux qubit. In our scheme, the interaction between Majorana fermions in a topological insulator is coherently controlled by a superconducting phase that depends on the quantum state of the flux qubit. A controlled phase gate, achieved by pulsing this interaction on and off, can transfer quantum information between the topological qubit and the superconducting qubit.
The strong coupling between individual optical emitters and propagating surface plasmons confined to a conducting nanotip make this system act as an ideal interface for quantum networks, through which a stationary qubit and a flying photon (surface plasmon) qubit can be interconverted via a Raman process. This quantum interface paves the way for many essential functions of a quantum network, including sending, receiving, transferring, swapping, and entangling qubits at distributed quantum nodes as well as a deterministic source and an efficient detector of a single-photon. Numerical simulation…
Quantum networks require functional nodes consisting of stationary registers with the capability of high-fidelity quantum processing and storage, which efficiently interface with photons propagating in an optical fiber. We report a significant step towards realization of such nodes using a diamond nanocavity with an embedded silicon-vacancy (SiV) color center and a proximal nuclear spin. Specifically, we show that efficient SiV-cavity coupling (with cooperativity $C >30$) provides a nearly-deterministic interface between photons and the electron spin memory, featuring coherence times exceeding…
We introduce a method for high-fidelity quantum state transduction between a superconducting microwave qubit and the ground state spin system of a solid-state artificial atom, mediated via an acoustic bus connected by piezoelectric transducers. Applied to present-day experimental parameters for superconducting circuit qubits and diamond silicon vacancy centers in an optimized phononic cavity, we estimate quantum state transduction with fidelity exceeding 99\% at a MHz-scale bandwidth. By combining the complementary strengths of superconducting circuit quantum computing and artificial atoms, th…
We study quantum effects of strong driving field applied to dissipative hybrid qubit-cavity system which are relevant for a realization of quantum gates in superconducting quantum metamaterials. We demonstrate that effects of strong and non-stationary drivings have significantly quantum nature and can not be treated by means of mean-field approximation. This is shown from a comparison of steady state solution of the standard Maxwell-Bloch equations and numerical solution of Lindblad equation on a density matrix. We show that mean-field approach provides very good agreement with the density mat…
A theoretical spin-based scheme for performing a variety of quantum computations is presented. It makes use of an array of multiple identical computer vectors of phosphorus-doped silicon where the nuclei serve as logical qubits and the electrons as working qubits. The spins are addressed by a combination of electron spin resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques operating at a field of ~3.3 T and cryogenic temperatures with an ultra-sensitive surface microresonator. Spin initialization is invoked by a combination of strong pre-polarization fields and laser pulses, which shortens the …

Scalable spin-to-photon interfaces require quantum emitters with strong optical transition dipole moment and low coupling to phonons and stray electric fields. It is known that particularly for coupling to stray electric fields, these conditions can be simultaneously satisfied for emitters that show inversion symmetry. Here, we show that inversion symmetry is not a prerequisite criterion for a spectrally stable quantum emitter. We find that identical electron density in ground and excited states can eliminate the coupling to the stray electric fields. Further, a strong optical transition dipol…
Quantum computers can potentially provide an unprecedented speed-up with respect to traditional computers. However, a significant increase in the number of quantum bits (qubits) and their performance is required to demonstrate such quantum supremacy. While scaling up the underlying quantum processor is extremely challenging, building the electronics required to interface such large-scale processor is just as relevant and arduous. This paper discusses the challenges in designing a scalable electronic interface for quantum processors. To that end, we discuss the requirements dictated by differen…
We study state engineering through bilinear interactions between two remote qubits and two-mode Gaussian light fields. The attainable two-qubit states span the entire physically allowed region in the entanglement-versus-global-purity plane. Two-mode Gaussian states with maximal entanglement at fixed global and marginal entropies produce maximally entangled two-qubit states in the corresponding entropic diagram. We show that a small set of parameters characterizing extremally entangled two-mode Gaussian states is sufficient to control the engineering of extremally entangled two-qubit states, wh…
We present and analyze a hybrid quantum system that interfaces a Majorana-hosted semiconductor nanowire with a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center via a magnetized torsional cantilever. We show that, the torsional mode of the mechanical resonator can strongly couple to the Majorana qubit and the spin qubit simultaneously, which allows to interface them for quantum state conversion through a dark state protocol. This work provides a promising interface between the topological qubit and the conventional spin qubit, and can find interesting applications in quantum information and computation.
High-connectivity circuits are a major roadblock for current quantum hardware. We propose a hybrid classical-quantum algorithm to simulate such circuits without swap-gate ladders. As main technical tool, we introduce quantum-classical-quantum interfaces. These replace an experimentally problematic gate (e.g. a long-range one) by single-qubit random measurements followed by state-preparations sampled according to a classical quasi-probability simulation of the noiseless gate. Each interface introduces a multiplicative statistical overhead which is remarkably independent of the on-chip qubit dis…
Quantum communication is the art of transferring quantum states, or quantum bits of information (qubits), from one place to another. On the fundamental side, this allows one to distribute entanglement and demonstrate quantum nonlocality over significant distances. On the more applied side, quantum cryptography offers, for the first time in human history, a provably secure way to establish a confidential key between distant partners. Photons represent the natural flying qubit carriers for quantum communication, and the presence of telecom optical fibres makes the wavelengths of 1310 and 1550 nm…
Architectures of donor-electron based qubits in silicon near an oxide interface are considered theoretically. We find that the precondition for reliable logic and read-out operations, namely the individual identification of each donor-bound electron near the interface, may be accomplished by fine-tuning electric and magnetic fields, both applied perpendicularly to the interface. We argue that such magnetic fields may also be valuable in controlling two-qubit entanglement via donor electron pairs near the interface.
Quantum interface links stationary qubits in quantum memory with flying photonic qubits in optical transmission channels and constitutes a critical element for future quantum internet. Entanglement of quantum interfaces is a key step for realization of quantum networks. Through heralded detection of photon interference, here we generate multipartite entanglement between 25 (or 9) individually addressable quantum interfaces in a multiplexed atomic quantum memory array and confirm genuine 22 (or 9) partite entanglement, respectively. Experimental entanglement of a record-high number of quantum i…
Recent experiments on silicon nanostructures have seen breakthroughs toward scalable, long-lived quantum information processing. The valley degree of freedom plays a fundamental role in these devices, and the two lowest-energy electronic states of a silicon quantum dot can form a valley qubit. In this work, we show that a single-atom high step at the silicon/barrier interface induces a strong interaction of the qubit and in-plane electric fields, and analyze the consequences of this enhanced interaction on the dynamics of the qubit. The charge densities of the qubit states are deformed differe…
We propose and analyze a passive architecture for realizing on-chip, scalable cascaded quantum devices. In contrast to standard approaches, our scheme does not rely on breaking Lorentz reciprocity. Rather, we engineer the interplay between pairs of superconducting transmon qubits and a microwave transmission line, in such a way that two delocalized orthogonal excitations emit (and absorb) photons propagating in opposite directions. We show how such cascaded quantum devices can be exploited to passively probe and measure complex many-body operators on quantum registers of stationary qubits, thu…
Photonic qubits memories are essential ingredients of numerous quantum networking protocols. The ideal situation features quantum computing nodes that are efficiently connected to quantum communication channels via quantum interfaces. The nodes contain a set of long-lived matter qubits, the channels support the propagation of light qubits, and the interface couples light and matter qubits. Towards this vision, we here demonstrate a random-access multi-qubit write-read memory for photons using two rubidium atoms coupled to the same mode of an optical cavity, a setup which is known to feature qu…
Hybrid quantum circuits combining advantages of each individual system have provided a promising platform for quantum information processing. Here we propose an experimental scheme to directly couple a transmon qubit to an individual spin in the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center, with a coupling strength three orders of magnitude larger than that for a single spin coupled to a microwave cavity. This direct coupling between the transmon and the NV center could be utilized to make a transmon bus, leading to a coherently virtual exchange among different single spins. Furthermore, we demonstrate that, …
We identify the presence of monoatomic steps at the Si/SiGe or Si/SiO$_2$ interface as a dominant source of variations in the dephasing time of Si quantum dot (QD) spin qubits. First, using atomistc tight-binding calculations we show that the g-factors and their Stark shifts undergo variations due to these steps. We compare our theoretical predictions with experiments on QDs at a Si/SiO$_2$ interface, in which we observe significant differences in Stark shifts between QDs in two different samples. We also experimentally observe variations in the $g$-factors of one-electron and three-electron s…
The silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) material system is technologically important for the implementation of electron spin-based quantum information technologies. Researchers predict the need for an integrated platform in order to implement useful computation, and decades of advancements in silicon microelectronics fabrication lends itself to this challenge. However, fundamental concerns have been raised about the MOS interface (e.g. trap noise, variations in electron g-factor and practical implementation of multi-QDs). Furthermore, two-axis control of silicon qubits has, to date, requir…
Hybrid architectures, consisting of conventional and topological qubits, have recently attracted much attention due to their capability in consolidating the robustness of topological qubits and the universality of conventional qubits. However, these two kinds of qubits are normally constructed in significantly different energy scales, and thus this energy mismatch is a major obstacle for their coupling that supports the exchange of quantum information between them. Here, we propose a microwave photonic quantum bus for a direct strong coupling between the topological and conventional qubits, in…
We describe an experimental effort designing and deploying error-robust single-qubit operations using a cloud-based quantum computer and analog-layer programming access. We design numerically-optimized pulses that implement target operations and exhibit robustness to various error processes including dephasing noise, instabilities in control amplitudes, and crosstalk. Pulse optimization is performed using a flexible optimization package incorporating a device model and physically-relevant constraints (e.g. bandwidth limits on the transmission lines of the dilution refrigerator housing IBM Quan…
Dielectric loss is one of the major decoherence sources of superconducting qubits. Contemporary high-coherence superconducting qubits are formed by material systems mostly consisting of superconducting films on substrate with low dielectric loss, where the loss mainly originates from the surfaces and interfaces. Among the multiple candidates for material systems, a combination of titanium nitride (TiN) film and sapphire substrate has good potential because of its chemical stability against oxidization, and high quality at interfaces. In this work, we report a TiN film deposited onto sapphire s…
We develop the theory of single-electron silicon spin qubit relaxation in the presence of a magnetic field gradient. Such field gradients are routinely generated by on-chip micromagnets to allow for electrically controlled quantum gates on spin qubits. We build on a valley-dependent envelope function theory that enables the analysis of the electron wave function in a silicon quantum dot with an arbitrary roughness at the interface. We assume the presence of single-layer atomic steps at a Si/SiGe interface and study how the presence of a gradient field modifies the spin-mixing mechanisms. We sh…
A scaled-up quantum computer will require a highly efficient control interface that autonomously manipulates and reads out large numbers of qubits, which for solid-state implementations are usually held at millikelvin (mK) temperatures. Advanced CMOS technology, tightly integrated with the quantum system, would be ideal for implementing such a control interface but is generally discounted on the basis of its power dissipation that leads to heating of the fragile qubits. Here, we demonstrate an ultra low power, CMOS-based quantum control platform that takes digital commands as input and generat…
Experimental results are presented on the efficiency limits for a quantum interface between a matter-based qubit and a photonic qubit. Using a trapped ion in an optical cavity, we obtain a single ion-entangled photon at the cavity output with a probability of 0.69(3). The performance of our system is shown to saturate the upper limit to photon-collection probability from a quantum emitter in a cavity, set by the emitter's electronic structure and by the cavity parameters. The probability for generating and detecting the ion-entangled fiber-coupled photon is 0.462(3), a five-fold increase over …
We present a novel spectroscopy protocol based on optimal control of a single quantum system. It enables measurements with quantum-limited sensitivity (η_ω~ 1/sqrt(T_2^*),T_2^* denoting the system's coherence time) but has an orders of magnitude larger dynamic range than pulsed spectroscopy methods previously employed for this task. We employ this protocol to image nanoscale magnetic fields with a single scanning NV center in diamond. Here, our scheme enables quantitative imaging of a strongly inhomogeneous field in a single scan without closed-loop control, which has previously been necessary…
A superconducting qubit device suitable for interacting with a flying electron has recently been proposed [H. Okamoto and Y. Nagatani, Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{104}, 062604 (2014)]. Either a clockwise or counter clockwise directed loop of half magnetic flux quantum encodes a qubit, which naturally interacts with any single charged particle with arbitrary kinetic energy. Here, the device's properties, sources of errors and possible applications are studied in detail. In particular, applications include detection of a charged particle without applying a force to it. Furthermore, quantum states …
We describe an approach to the integrated control and measurement of a large-scale superconducting multiqubit circuit using a proximal coprocessor based on the Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) digital logic family. Coherent control is realized by irradiating the qubits directly with classical bitstreams derived from optimal control theory. Qubit measurement is performed by a Josephson photon counter, which provides access to the classical result of projective quantum measurement at the millikelvin stage. We analyze the power budget and physical footprint of the SFQ coprocessor and discuss challenges …

By using a composite gate pulse, the fidelity can be further improved to >99.5% with t…
We propose an efficient light-matter interface at optical frequencies between a single photon and a superconducting qubit. The desired interface is based on a hybrid architecture composed of an organic molecule embedded inside an optical waveguide and electrically coupled to a superconducting qubit placed near the outside surface of the waveguide. We show that high fidelity, photon-mediated, entanglement between distant superconducting qubits can be achieved with incident pulses at the single photon level. Such a low light level is highly desirable for achieving a coherent optical interface wi…
A complete physical approach to quantum information requires a robust interface among flying qubits, long-lifetime memory and computational qubits. Our approach uses an ultracold ensemble of atoms for two purposes: quantum memory and to transduce excitations between the two frequency domains. Using coherent control techniques, we examine an approach for converting and storing quantum information betw…
We propose doubly-ionized lanthanum (La$^{2+}$) as a possible qubit candidate for quantum networks. Transitions between the lowest levels in the atom are in the infrared, enabling a direct matter-light interface amenable to long-distance quantum communication. These transitions could also be used to directly laser-cool trapped La$^{2+}$ ions. The rich hyperfine structure of the ion may allow for a qubit stored in magnetic-field insensitive states, as well as protocols for atom-photon entanglement.
