We investigate for which resource states an efficient classical simulation of measurement based quantum computation is possible. We show that the Schmidt--rank width, a measure recently introduced to assess universality of resource states, plays a crucial role in also this context. We relate Schmidt--rank width to the optimal description of states in terms of tree tensor networks and show that an efficient classical simulation of measurement based quantum computation is possible for all states with logarithmically bounded Schmidt--rank width (with respect to the system size). For graph states where the Schmidt--rank width scales in this way, we efficiently construct the optimal tree tensor network descriptions, and provide several examples. We highlight parallels in the efficient description of complex systems in quantum information theory and graph theory.

Universality of Computation in Real Quantum Theory
We address entanglement transitions in monitored random quantum circuits of non-interacting fermions, in particular, the question of whether Born-rule and forced measurements yield the same universality class. For a generic circuit with no symmetry other than fermion parity, acting on a one-dimensional Majorana chain, we numerically obtain several critical exponents, providing clear evidence that the two transitions with Born-rule and forced measurements are in different universality classes. We provide a theoretical understanding for our numerical results by identifying the underlying statist…

Quantum computational universality of the Cai-Miyake-Dür-Briegel 2D quantum state from Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki quasichains
Rev. A 82,052309(2010)]。
The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) quantum error-correcting code has emerged as a key technique in achieving fault-tolerant quantum computation using photonic systems. Whereas [Baragiola et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 200502 (2019)] showed that experimentally tractable Gaussian operations combined with preparing a GKP codeword $\lvert 0\rangle$ suffice to implement universal quantum computation, this implementation scheme involves a distillation of a logical magic state $\lvert H\rangle$ of the GKP code, which inevitably imposes a trade-off between implementation cost and fidelity. In contrast…
We have studied ${\rm SU}(2)_k$ anyon models, assessing their prospects for topological quantum computation. In particular, we have compared the Ising ($k=2$) anyon and Fibonacci ($k=3$) anyon models, motivated by their potential for future realizations based on Majorana fermion quasiparticles or exotic fractional quantum-Hall states, respectively. The quantum computational performance of the different anyon models is quantified at single qubit level by the difference between a target unitary operator and its approximation realised by anyon braiding. To facilitate efficient comparisons, we hav…
Recent work has demonstrated the existence of universal Hamiltonians - simple spin lattice models that can simulate any other quantum many body system to any desired level of accuracy. Until now proofs of universality have relied on explicit constructions, tailored to each specific family of universal Hamiltonians. In this work we go beyond this approach, and completely classify the simulation ability of quantum Hamiltonians by their complexity classes. We do this by deriving necessary and sufficient complexity theoretic conditions characterising universal quantum Hamiltonians. Although the re…
Boson sampling with displaced single-photon Fock states versus single-photon-added coherent states---The quantum-classical divide and computational-complexity transitions in linear optics
We consider a model of quantum computation we call "Varying-$Z$" (V$Z$), defined by applying controllable $Z$-diagonal Hamiltonians in the presence of a uniform and constant external $X$-field, and prove that it is universal, even in 1D. Universality is demonstrated by construction of a universal gate set with $O(1)$ depth overhead. We then use this construction to describe a circuit whose output distribution cannot be classically simulated unless the polynomial hierarchy collapses, with the goal of providing a low-resource method of demonstrating quantum supremacy. The V$Z$ model can achieve …
We study quasi-exact quantum error correcting codes and quantum computation with them. A quasi-exact code is an approximate code such that it contains a finite number of scaling parameters, the tuning of which can flow it to corresponding exact codes, serving as its fixed points. The computation with a quasi-exact code cannot realize any logical gate to arbitrary accuracy. To overcome this, the notion of quasi-exact universality is proposed, which makes quasi-exact quantum computation a feasible model especially for executing moderate-size algorithms. We find that the incompatibility between u…
The universal quantum computation model based on quantum walk by Childs has opened the door for a new way of studying the limitations and advantages of quantum computation, as well as for its intermediate-term simulation. In recent years, the growing interest in noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers (NISQ) has lead to intense efforts being directed at understanding the computational advantages of open quantum systems. In this work, we extend the quantum walk model to open noisy systems in order to provide such a tool for the study of NISQ computers. Our method does not use explicit purifi…
