We present a linear optical scheme for error-free distribution of two-photon polarization entangled Bell states over noisy channels. The scheme can be applied to an elementary quantum repeater protocol with potentially significant improvements in efficiency and system complexity. The scheme is based on the use of polarization and time-bin encoding of photons and can perform single-pair, single-step purification with currently available technology.
Quantum repeaters are critical to the development of quantum networks, enabling rates of entanglement distribution beyond those attainable by direct transmission. We consider multiple continuous-variable, squeezed light-based entanglement flows through a repeater involving noiseless linear amplification and dual homodyne detection. By analyzing a single-repeater-enhanced channel model with asymmetric losses across the repeater, we determine optimal placements of the central repeater hub in a 4-user hub-and-spoke network such that the rate of each entanglement flow through the hub is enhanced.

We show that the amount of entanglement needed as an initial resource to set up a certain final amount of entanglement between two ends of a noisy channel can be reduced in certain cases by using quantum repeaters. Our investigation (for various channels) considers cases when a large number of entangled pairs are transmitted through the channel using known asymptotic results and conjectured bounds on distillable entanglement.

We propose a realistic protocol to generate entanglement between quantum memories at neighboring nodes in hybrid quantum repeaters. Generated entanglement includes only one type of error, which enables efficient entanglement distillation. In contrast to the known protocols with such a property, our protocol with ideal detectors achieves the theoretical limit of the success probability and the fidelity to a Bell state, promising higher efficiencies in the repeaters. We also show that the advantage of our protocol remains even with realistic threshold detectors.

We optimize the secret key rate per memory per second with respect to different distillation protocols and distillation strategies. For this purpose, we also derive an analytical expression for the average number of entangled pairs created by the quantum repeater, including classical communication times for entanglement swapping and entanglement distillation. We propose an efficient quantum repeater architecture with mesoscopic atomic ensembles, where the Rydberg blockade is employed for deterministic local entanglement generation, entanglement swapping and entanglement purification. Compared with conventional atomic-ensemble-based quantum repeater, the entanglement distribution rate is improved by up to two orders of magnitude with the help of the deterministic Rydberg gate. This new quantum repeater scheme is robust and fast, and thus opens up a new way for practical long-distance quantum communication.
We formulate the problem of finding the optimal entanglement swapping scheme in a quantum repeater chain as a Markov decision process and present its solution for different repeater's sizes. We study entanglement creation over global distances based on a quantum repeater architecture that uses low-earth orbit satellites equipped with entangled photon sources, as well as ground stations equipped with quantum non-demolition detectors and quantum memories. We show that this approach allows entanglement creation at viable rates over distances that are inaccessible via direct transmission through optical fibers or even from very distant satellites.

We report an experimental realization of entanglement concentration using two polarization-entangled photon pairs produced by pulsed parametric down-conversion. In the meantime, our setup also provides a proof-in-principle demonstration of a quantum repeater. A single laser beam is used to excite one atomic ensemble and two different spatial modes of scattered Raman fields are collected to generate the atom-photon entanglement. We propose a repeat-until-success protocol to improve the performance of probabilistic quantum repeaters. Quantum repeaters rely on passive static linear optics elements and photodetectors to perform Bell-state measurements (BSMs). Conventionally, the success rate of these BSMs cannot exceed 50%, which is an impediment for entanglement swapping between distant quantum memories. We propose a Bell measurement free scheme to implement a quantum repeater in GaAs/AlGa double qunatum dot systems.we prove the four pairs of double quantum dots compose an entanglement unit, given the the initial state is singlet states. Our shceme differs from the famous Duan-Lukin-Cirac-zoller(DLCZ) protocol in that Bell measurements are unneccessary for the entanglement swapping,which provides great advantages and conveniences in experimental implementaion. Our scheme significantly improve the success probability of quantum repeaters based on solid state quantum devices.
We propose a quantum repeater protocol and architecture that mitigates decoherence of the entangled states by optimizing the quantum memory buffer time. The protocol maximizes the rate of distillable entanglement in the average accessed state at all nesting levels. The achievable rate is higher by orders of magnitude in comparison to a canonical protocol that does not optimize the buffer time. The advantage of the proposed design is observed for all nesting levels of the repeater for technologically feasible memory quality, entanglement generation and swapping success probabilities.
