We present the optimal estimation of an unknown squeezing transformation of the radiation field. The optimal estimation is unbiased and is obtained by properly considering the degeneracy of the squeezing operator. For coherent input states, the r.m.s. of the estimation scales as $(2\sqrt {\bar n})^{-1}$ versus the average photon number $\bar n$, while it can be enhanced to $(2\bar n)^{-1}$ by using displaced squeezed states.
The effects of reservoir squeezing on the precision of parameter estimation are investigated analytically based on non-perturbation procedures. The exact analytic quantum Fisher information (QFI) is obtained. It is shown that the QFI depends on the estimated parameter and its decay could be reduced by the squeezed reservoir compared with thermal (vacuum) reservoir, in particular, if the squeezing phase matching is satisfied.
We have examined both single and entangled two-mode multiphoton coherent states and shown how the `Janus-faced' properties between two partner states are mirrored in appropriate tomograms. Entropic squeezing, quadrature squeezing and higher-order squeezing properties for a wide range of nonclassical states are estimated directly from tomograms. We have demonstrated how squeezing properties of two-mode entangled states produced at the output port of a quantum beamsplitter are sensitive to the relative phase between the reflected and transmitted fields. This feature allows for the possibility of…
We study the problem of joint estimation of real squeezing and amplitude of the radiation field, deriving the measurement that maximizes the probability density of detecting the true value of the unknown parameters. More generally, we provide a solution for the problem of estimating the unknown unitary action of a nonunimodular group in the maximum likelihood approach. Remarkably, in this case the optimal measurements do not coincide with the so called square-root measurements. In the case of squeezing and displacement we analyze in detail the sensitivity of estimation for coherent states and …
We address a phase estimation scheme using Gaussian states in the presence of non-Gaussian phase noise. At variance with previous analysis, we analyze situations in which the noise occurs before encoding phase information. In particular, we study how squeezing may be profitably used before or after phase diffusion. Our results show that squeezing the probe after the noise greatly enhances the sensitivity of the estimation scheme, as witnessed by the increase of the quantum Fisher information. We then consider a realistic setup where homodyne detection is employed at the measurement stage, and …
It is shown that 100% squeezed output can be produced in the resonance fluorescence from a coherently driven two-level atom interacting with a squeezed vacuum. This is only possible for $N=1/8$ squeezed input, and is associated with a pure atomic state, i.e., a completely polarized state. The quadrature for which optimal squeezing occurs depends on the squeezing phase $Φ,$ the Rabi frequency $Ω,$ and the atomic detuning $Δ$. Pure states are described for arbitrary $Φ,$ not just $Φ=0$ or $π$ as in previous work. For small values of $N,$ there may be a greater degree of squeezing in the output f…
We address quantum estimation of displacement and squeezing parameters by the class of probes made of Gaussian states undergoing Kerr interaction. If we fix the overall energy available to the probe, without posing any constraint on the available Gaussian squeezing, then Gaussian squeezing represents the optimal resource for parameter estimation. On the other hand, in the more realistic case where the amount of Gaussian squeezing is fixed, or even absent, then Kerr interaction turns out to be useful to improve estimation, especially for probe states with large amplitude. Our results indicate t…
We propose a feedback scheme for the production of two-mode spin squeezing. We determine a general expression for the optimal feedback, which is also applicable to the case of single-mode spin squeezing. The two-mode spin squeezed states obtained via this feedback are optimal for j=1/2 and are very close to optimal for j>1/2. In addition, the master equation suggests a Hamiltonian that would produce two-mode spin squeezing without feedback, and is analogous to the two-axis countertwisting Hamiltonian in the single mode case.
Squeezing currently represents the leading strategy for quantum enhanced precision measurements of a single parameter in a variety of continuous- and discrete-variable settings and technological applications. However, many important physical problems including imaging and field sensing require the simultaneous measurement of multiple unknown parameters. The development of multiparameter quantum metrology is yet hindered by the intrinsic difficulty in finding saturable sensitivity bounds and feasible estimation strategies. Here, we derive the general operational concept of multiparameter squeez…
Squeezing of atomic resonance fluorescence is shown to be optimized by a properly designed environment, which can be realized by a quasi-resonant cavity. Optimal squeezing is achieved if the atomic coherence is maximized, corresponding to a pure atomic quantum state. The atomic-state purification is achieved by the backaction of the cavity field on the atom, which increases the atomic coherence and decreases the atomic excitation. For realistic cavities, the coupling of the atom to the cavity field yields a purity of the atomic state of more than 99%. The fragility of squeezing against dephasi…
Optimal control problem with a goal to squeeze wave packet of a trapped quantum particle is considered and solved analytically using adiabatic approximation. The analytical solution that drives the particle into a highly localized final state is presented for a case of an infinite well trapping potential. The presented solution may be applied to increase the resolution of atom lithography.
We investigate the creation of squeezing via operations subject to noise and losses and ask for the optimal use of such devices when supplemented by noiseless passive operations. Both single and repeated uses of the device are optimized analytically and it is proven that in the latter case the squeezing converges exponentially fast to its asymptotic optimum, which we determine explicitly. For the case of multiple iterations we show that the optimum can be achieved with fixed intermediate passive operations. Finally, we relate the results to the generation of entanglement and derive the maximal…
We consider an instance of black-box quantum metrology in the Gaussian framework, where we aim to estimate the amount of squeezing applied on an input probe, without previous knowledge on the phase of the applied squeezing. By taking the quantum Fisher information (QFI) as the figure of merit, we evaluate its average and variance with respect to this phase in order to identify probe states that yield good precision for many different squeezing directions. We first consider the case of single-mode Gaussian probes with the same energy, and find that pure squeezed states maximize the average quan…
A Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) can create squeezed states of microwave light, lowering the noise associated with certain quantum measurements. We experimentally study how the JPA's pump influences the phase-sensitive amplification and deamplification of a coherent tone's amplitude when that amplitude is commensurate with vacuum fluctuations. We predict and demonstrate that by operating the JPA with a pump power greater than the value that maximizes gain, the amplifier distortion is reduced and consequently squeezing is improved. Optimizing the JPA's operation in this fashion, we direct…
Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 51, page 511e studied for coherently driven single photon sources, such as atoms and quantum dots. Maximal squeezing is realized, if the electronic subsystem of the emitter is in a pure quantum state. The purification is achieved by using a cavity as a second decay channel, besides the incoherent coupling to the electromagnetic vacuum. For realistic cavities this yields a purity of the electronic state of more than 99%. Aside from numerical calculations, we also derive approximate analytical results. Based on the approximations, effects are s…
Processing quantum information on continuous variables requires a highly nonlinear element in order to attain universality. Noise reduction in processing such quantum information involves the use of a nonlinear phase state as a non-Gaussian ancilla. A necessary condition for a nonlinear phase state to implement a nonlinear phase gate is that noise in a selected nonlinear quadrature should decrease below the level of classical states. A reduction of the variance in this nonlinear quadrature below the ground state of the ancilla, a type of nonlinear squeezing, is the resource embedded in these n…
Quantum metrology enables estimation of optical phase shifts with precision beyond the shot-noise limit. One way to exceed this limit is to use squeezed states, where the quantum noise of one observable is reduced at the expense of increased quantum noise for its complementary partner. Because shot-noise limits the phase sensitivity of all classical states, reduced noise in the average value for the observable being measured allows for improved phase sensitivity. However, additional phase sensitivity can be achieved using phase estimation strategies that account for the full distribution of me…
Since a general Gaussian process is phase-sensitive, a stable phase reference is required to take advantage of this feature. When the reference is missing, either due to the volatile nature of the measured sample or the measurement's technical limitations, the resulting process appears as random in phase. Under this condition, we consider two single-mode Gaussian processes, displacement and squeezing. We show that these two can be efficiently estimated using photon number states and photon number resolving detectors. For separate estimation of displacement and squeezing, the practical estimati…
We investigate the presence of spin- and planar- squeezing in generalized superpositions of atomic (or spin) coherent states (ACS). Spin-squeezing has been shown to be a useful tool in determining the presence of entanglement in multipartite systems, such as collections of two-level atoms, as well as being an indication of reduced projection noise and sub-shot-noise limited phase uncertainty in Ramsey spectroscopy, suitable for measuring phases $ϕ\sim 0$. On the other hand, planar-squeezed states display reduced projection noise in two directions simultaneously and have been shown to lead to e…
A mechanical system can be optimally controlled through continuous measurements of its position followed by feedback. We revisit the complete formalism for predicting the performance of such as system without invoking the standard rotating wave approximations and the adiabatic approximation. Using this formalism we deduce both the conditional and unconditional state of a mechanical oscillator using the optimal control and feedback that leads to mechanical cooling and mechanical squeezing. We find large discrepancies between the exact solutions and the approximate solutions stressing the import…
The performance of key tasks in quantum technology, such as accurate state preparation, can be maximized by utilizing external controls and deriving their shape with optimal control theory. For non-pure target states, the performance measure needs to match both angle and length of the generalized Bloch vector. We introduce a measure based on this simple geometric picture that separates angle and length mismatch into individual terms and apply the ensuing optimization framework to maximize squeezing of an optomechanical oscillator at finite temperature. Our results show that shaping the cavity …
We theoretically study the angular displacements estimation based on a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), in which two optical parametric amplifiers (PAs) are introduced into two arms of the standard MZI, respectively. The employment of PAs can both squeeze the shot noise and amplify the photon number inside the interferometer. When the unknown angular displacements are introduced to both arms, we derive the multiparameter quantum Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB) using the quantum Fisher information matrix approach, and the bound of angular displacements difference between the two arms is comp…
The generation and storage of spin squeezing is an attracting topic in quantum metrology and the foundations of quantum mechanics. The major models to realize the spin squeezing are the one- and two-axis twisting models. Here, we consider a collective spin system coupled to a bosonic field, and show that proper constant-value controls in this model can simulate the dynamical behaviors of these two models. More interestingly, a better performance of squeezing can be obtained when the control is time-varying, which is generated via a reinforcement learning algorithm. However, this advantage beco…
Backaction-evading (BAE) measurements of a mechanical resonator, by continuously monitoring a single quadrature of motion, can achieve precision below the zero-point uncertainty. When this happens, the measurement leaves the resonator in a quantum squeezed state. The squeezed state so generated is however conditional on the measurement outcomes, while for most applications it is desirable to have a deterministic, i.e., unconditional, squeezed state with the desired properties. In this work we apply feedback control to achieve deterministic manipulation of mechanical squeezing in an optomechani…
Fisher information, lies at the heart of parameter estimation theory, was recently found to have a close relation with multipartite entanglement (Pezzé and Smerzi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 100401). We use Fisher information to distinguish and characterize behaviors of ground state of the Lipkin-Meskhov-Glick model, which displays a second-order quantum phase transition between the broken and symmetric phases. We find that the parameter sensitivity of the system attains the Heisenberg limit in the broken phase, while it is just around the shot-noise limit in the symmetric phase. Based on parameter…
Entangled atomic states, such as spin squeezed states, represent a promising resource for a new generation of quantum sensors and atomic clocks. We demonstrate that optimal control techniques can be used to substantially enhance the degree of spin squeezing in strongly interacting many-body systems, even in the presence of noise and imperfections. Specifically, we present a protocol that is robust to noise which outperforms conventional methods. Potential experimental implementations are discussed.
In the context of phase estimation with Gaussian states, we introduce a quantifiable definition of metrological advantage that takes into account thermal noise in the preparation procedure. For a broad set of states, \textit{isotropic non-pure Gaussian states}, we show that squeezing is not only necessary, but sufficient, to achieve metrological advantage. We interpret our results in the framework of resource theory, and discuss possible sources of advantage other than squeezing. Our work is a step towards using phase estimation with pure and mixed state to define and quantify nonclassicality.…
To gain an advantage, quantum technologies utilize phenomena particular to quantum mechanics. Two such phenomena are squeezing and entanglement. Having generated states that exhibit these features, verification of their generation with local measurements can be a difficult process. Here we consider the states that are generated using the two-qudit single-axis squeezing Hamiltonian, that not only produces entangled two-qudit squeezed states but also results in various forms of interesting entangled states. We show how one can use local measurements to both efficiently verify and directly estima…
Momentum diffusion is a possible mechanism for driving macroscopic quantum systems towards classical behaviour. Experimental tests of this hypothesis rely on a precise estimation of the strength of this diffusion. We show that quantum-mechanical squeezing offers significant improvements, including when measuring position. For instance, with 10dB of mechanical squeezing, experiments would require a tenth of proposed free-fall times. Momentum measurement is better by an additional factor of three, while another quadrature is close to optimal. These have particular implications for the space-base…
It is not clear if the performance of a quantum lidar or radar, without an idler and only using Gaussian resources, could exceed the performance of a semiclassical setup based on coherent states and homodyne detection. Here we prove this is indeed the case by showing that an idler-free squeezed-based setup can beat this semiclassical benchmark. More generally, we show that probes whose displacement and squeezing are jointly optimized can strictly outperform coherent states with the same mean number of input photons for both the problems of quantum illumination and reading.
A scheme is proposed to estimate the system and environmental parameter, the detuning, temperature and the squeezing strength with a high precision by the two-level atom system. It hasn't been reported that the squeezing strength estimation through quantum Fisher information. We find entangled state and optimal superposition state are beneficial for parameter estimation with one-qubit probe by calculating quantum Fisher information and fidelity. And the fidelity between initial and final states of the atom can be improved via the two-qubit probe. Moreover, the phenomenon of quantum Fisher info…
Interferometers are crucial for precision measurements, including gravitational waves, laser ranging, radar, and imaging. The phase sensitivity, the core parameter, can be quantum-enhanced to break the standard quantum limit (SQL) using quantum states. However, quantum states are highly fragile and quickly degrade with losses. We design and demonstrate a quantum interferometer utilizing a beam splitter with a variable splitting ratio to protect the quantum resource against environmental impacts. The optimal phase sensitivity can reach the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the system. This quantum in…
We analyze the effect of squeezing the channel in binary communication based on Gaussian states. We show that for coding on pure states, squeezing increases the detection probability at fixed size of the strategy, actually saturating the optimal bound already for moderate signal energy. Using Neyman-Pearson lemma for fuzzy hypothesis testing we are able to analyze also the case of mixed states, and to find the optimal amount of squeezing that can be effectively employed. It results that optimally squeezed channels are robust against signal-mixing, and largely improve the strategy power by comp…
We determine the complete set of generalized spin squeezing inequalities. These are entanglement criteria that can be used for the experimental detection of entanglement in a system of spin-1/2 particles in which the spins cannot be individually addressed. They can also be used to show the presence of bound entanglement in the thermal states of several spin models.
We optimize the signal-to-noise ratio of a Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer with Gaussian squeezed input states, in the presence interactions. For weak interactions, our results coincide with Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 100}, 250406 (2008), with optimal initial number-variance $σ_o\propto N^{1/3}$ and optimal signal-to-noise ratio $s_o\propto N^{2/3}$ for total atom number $N$. As the interaction strength $u$ increases past unity, phase-diffusion becomes dominant, leading to a transition in the optimal squeezing from initial number-squeezing to initial {\it phase}-squeezing with $σ_o\propto\sqrt{uN}…
We investigate theoretically quantum entanglement of light with the collective spin polarization of a cold atomic ensemble in cavity-assisted Raman schemes. Previous works concentrated mostly on the bad cavity limit where the signals are much longer than the cavity field lifetime. In view of atomic relaxation and other imperfections, there may arise a need to speed-up the light-atoms interface operation. By increasing the cavity field lifetime, one can achieve better light-matter coupling and entanglement. In our work, we consider the non-adiabatic effects that become important beyond the bad …
We address the problem of continuous-variable quantum phase estimation in the presence of linear disturbance at the Hamiltonian level, by means of Gaussian probe states. In particular we discuss both unitary and random disturbance, by considering the parameter which characterizes the unwanted linear term present in the Hamiltonian as fixed (unitary disturbance) or random with a given probability distribution (random disturbance). We derive the optimal input Gaussian states at fixed energy, maximizing the quantum Fisher information over the squeezing angle and the squeezing energy fraction, and…
We construct a practical method for finding optimal Gaussian probe states for the estimation of parameters encoded by Gaussian unitary channels. This method can be used for finding all optimal probe states, rather than focusing on the performance of specific states as shown in previous studies. As an example, we apply this method to find optimal probes for the channel that combines the phase-change and squeezing channels, and for generalized two-mode squeezing and mode-mixing channels. The method enables a comprehensive study of temperature effects in Gaussian parameter estimation. It has been…
We address the performance of an interferometric setup in which a squeezed single photon interferes at a beam splitter with a coherent state. Our analysis in based on both the quantum Fisher information and the sensitivity when a Mach-Zehnder setup is considered and the difference photocurrent is detected at the output. We compare our results with those obtained feeding the interferometer with a squeezed vacuum (with the same squeezing parameter of the squeezed single photon) and a coherent state in order to have the same total number of photons circulating in the interferometer. We find that …
We study the fundamental bounds on precision measurements of parameters contained in a time-dependent nonlinear optomechanical Hamiltonian, which includes the nonlinear light-matter coupling, a mechanical displacement term, and a single-mode mechanical squeezing term. By using a recently developed method to solve the dynamics of this system, we derive a general expression for the quantum Fisher information and demonstrate its applicability through three concrete examples: estimation of the strength of a nonlinear light-matter coupling, the strength of a time-modulated mechanical displacement, …
