Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 51, page 511e studied for coherently driven single photon sources, such as atoms and quantum dots. Maximal squeezing is realized, if the electronic subsystem of the emitter is in a pure quantum state. The purification is achieved by using a cavity as a second decay channel, besides the incoherent coupling to the electromagnetic vacuum. For realistic cavities this yields a purity of the electronic state of more than 99%. Aside from numerical calculations, we also derive approximate analytical results. Based on the approximations, effects are studied which originate from the environment of the emitter, including radiationless dephasing and incoherent pumping of the emitter and the cavity mode. The fragility of squeezing against decoherence is substantially reduced, so that squeezing persists even under hostile conditions. The measurement of squeezing from such light sources is also considered.
The squeezing spectrum of the fluorescence field emitted from a four-level atom in $J=1/2$ to $J=1/2$ configuration driven by two coherent fields is studied. We find that the squeezing properties of the fluorescence radiation are significantly influenced by the presence of vacuum-induced coherence in the atomic system. It is shown that such coherence induces spectral squeezing in phase quadratures of the fluorescence light for both weak and strong driving fields. The dependence of the squeezing spectrum on the relative phase of the driving fields is also investigated. Effects such as enhanceme…
It is shown that 100% squeezed output can be produced in the resonance fluorescence from a coherently driven two-level atom interacting with a squeezed vacuum. This is only possible for $N=1/8$ squeezed input, and is associated with a pure atomic state, i.e., a completely polarized state. The quadrature for which optimal squeezing occurs depends on the squeezing phase $Φ,$ the Rabi frequency $Ω,$ and the atomic detuning $Δ$. Pure states are described for arbitrary $Φ,$ not just $Φ=0$ or $π$ as in previous work. For small values of $N,$ there may be a greater degree of squeezing in the output f…
The squeezing spectrum of the resonance fluorescence is studied for a coherently driven four-level atom in the Y-type configuration. It is found that the squeezing properties of the fluorescence radiation are modified significantly when quantum interference of the spontaneous decays channels is included. We show a considerable enhancement of steady-state squeezing in spectral components for strong and off-resonant driving fields. The squeezing may be increased in both the inner and outer sidebands of the spectrum depending upon the choice of parameters. We also show that the interference can d…
We consider a two-level atom stimulated by a coherent monochromatic laser and we study how to enhance the squeezing of the fluorescence light and of the atom itself in the presence of a Wiseman-Milburn feedback mechanism, based on the homodyne detection of a fraction of the emitted light. Besides analyzing the effect of the control parameters on the squeezing properties of the light and of the atom, we also discuss the relations among these. The problem is tackled inside the framework of quantum trajectory theory.
The fluorescence intensity and quadrature spectra from a two-level atom embedded in a photonic bandgap crystal and resonantly driven by a classical pump light are calculated. The non-Markovian nature of the problem caused by the non-uniform distribution of the photonic density of states is handled by linearizing the generalized optical Bloch equations with the Liouville operator expansion. Unlike the case in free space, we find that the bandgap effects will not only modify the fluorescence spectral shape but also cause squeezing in the in-phase quadrature spectra.
We study squeezing properties of the fluorescence radiation emitted by a driven $Λ$-type atom in which the metastable lower energy levels are coupled by an additional field. We find that the relative phase of the applied fields can significantly modify the squeezing characteristics of radiation. It is shown that the additional field connecting the lower levels in the system can induce spectral squeezing in a parameter regime for which the squeezing is absent without the additional field. Moreover, the squeezing can be shifted from inner- to outer-sidebands of the spectrum by simply changing th…
Squeezing of atomic resonance fluorescence is shown to be optimized by a properly designed environment, which can be realized by a quasi-resonant cavity. Optimal squeezing is achieved if the atomic coherence is maximized, corresponding to a pure atomic quantum state. The atomic-state purification is achieved by the backaction of the cavity field on the atom, which increases the atomic coherence and decreases the atomic excitation. For realistic cavities, the coupling of the atom to the cavity field yields a purity of the atomic state of more than 99%. The fragility of squeezing against dephasi…
It was shown by a study of the incoherent part of the low-frequency resonance fluorescence spectrum of the polar quantum emitter driven by semiclassical external laser field and damped by non-squeezed vacuum reservoir that the emitted fluorescence field is squeezed to some degree nevertheless. As was also found, a higher degree of squeezing could, in principle, be achieved by damping the emitter by squeezed vacuum reservoir.
We theoretically demonstrate the enhanced and dephasing immune squeezing in the resonance fluorescence of a single quantum dot (QD) confined to a pillar-microcavity and driven by a continuous wave laser. We employ a formalism based on Polaron master equation theory for incorporating the influence of exciton-phonon coupling quite accurately in the dot-cavity system. We show a significant enhancement of squeezing due to cavity coupling of the QD as compared to that of an ideal single two-level system in free space. Particularly, we show a four-fold enhancement in squeezing as compared to that of…
We present an experimental comparison and a theoretical analysis of the signal-to-noise ratios in fluorescence and extinction spectroscopy of a single emitter. We show that extinction measurements can be advantageous if the emitter is weakly excited. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of this method for the detection and spectroscopy of weakly emitting systems such as rare earth ions.

The resonance fluorescence from regular atomic systems is shown to represent a continuous source of non-Gaussian entangled radiation propagating in two different directions. For a single atom entanglement occurs under the same conditions as squeezing. For more atoms, the entanglement can be more robust against dephasing than squeezing, hence providing a useful continuous source for various applications of entangled radiation.
Intensity squeezing, i.e., photon number fluctuations below the shot noise limit, is a fundamental aspect of quantum optics and has wide applications in quantum metrology. It was predicted in 1979 that the intensity squeezing could be observed in resonance fluorescence from a two-level quantum system. Yet, its experimental observation in solid states was hindered by inefficiencies in generating, collecting and detecting resonance fluorescence. Here, we report the intensity squeezing in a single-mode fibre-coupled resonance fluorescence single-photon source based on a quantum dot-micropillar sy…
Absorption is usually expected to be detrimental to quantum coherence effects. However, the situation for complex absorption spectra has been little studied yet. We consider the resonance fluorescence of excitons in a semiconductor quantum well. The creation of excitons requires absorption of the incoming pump-laser light. Thus, the absorption spectrum of the medium acts as a spectral filter for the emitted light. Surprisingly, absorption can even improve quantum effects, as is demonstrated for the squeezing of the resonance fluorescence of the quantum-well system. This effect can be explained…
This proposal investigates the photon-statistics of light emitted by a statistical ensemble of cold atoms excited by the near-field of an optical nanofiber tip. Dipole-dipole interactions of atoms at such short distance from each other suppress the simultaneous emission of more than one photon and lead to antibunching of photons. We consider a mean atom number on the order of one and deal with a poissonian mixture of one and two atoms including dipole-dipole interactions and collective decay. Time tracks of the atomic states are simulated in quantum Monte Carlo simulations from which the $g^{(…
Among the formulations of the theory of quantum measurements in continuous time, quantum trajectory theory is very suitable for the introduction of measurement based feedback and closed loop control of quantum systems. In this paper we present such a construction in the concrete case of a two-level atom stimulated by a coherent, monochromatic laser. In particular, we show how fast feedback à la Wiseman and Milburn can be introduced in the formulation of the theory. Then, the spectrum of the free fluorescence light is studied and typical quantum phenomena, squeezing and sub-natural line-narrowi…
We study the dynamics of a general multi-emitter system coupled to the squeezed vacuum reservoir and derive a master equation for this system based on the Weisskopf-Wigner approximation. In this theory, we include the effect of positions of the squeezing sources which is usually neglected in the previous studies. We apply this theory to a quasi-one-dimensional waveguide case where the squeezing in one dimension is experimentally achievable. We show that while dipole-dipole interaction induced by ordinary vacuum depends on the emitter separation, the two-photon process due to the squeezed vacuu…
We review the continuous monitoring of a qubit through its spontaneous emission, at an introductory level. Contemporary experiments have been able to collect the fluorescence of an artificial atom in a cavity and transmission line, and then make measurements of that emission to obtain diffusive quantum trajectories in the qubit's state. We give a straightforward theoretical overview of such scenarios, using a framework based on Kraus operators derived from a Bayesian update concept; we apply this flexible framework across common types of measurements including photodetection, homodyne, and het…
Vibrational environments are commonly considered to be detrimental to the optical emission properties of solid-state and molecular systems, limiting their performance within quantum information protocols. Given that such environments arise naturally it is important to ask whether they can instead be turned to our advantage. Here we show that vibrational interactions can be harnessed within resonance fluorescence to generate optical states with a higher degree of quadrature squeezing than in isolated atomic systems. Considering the example of a driven quantum dot coupled to phonons, we demonstr…
We derive and evaluate equations of motion for the mean values and variances of the components of spins collectively coupled to a broadband squeezed radiation reservoir. Our formalism bridges between a single two-level emitter, represented by spin components that relax at different rates, depending on the degree of squeezing, to an ensemble of emitters represented by a large collective spin, whose components relax independently of the squeezing. For a single spin, the steady state fluctuations in the transverse components are independent of the squeezing, while the steady state of a large spin…
Electron shelving gives rise to bright and dark periods in the resonance fluorescence of a three-level atom. The corresponding incoherent spectrum contains a very narrow inelastic peak on top of a two-level-like spectrum. Using the theories of balanced and conditional homodyne detection we study ensemble averaged phase-dependent fluctuations of intermittent resonance fluorescence. The sharp peak is found only in the spectra of the squeezed quadrature. In balanced homodyne detection that peak is positive, which greatly reduces the squeezing, also seen in its variance. In conditional homodyne de…
We study a system of two interacting, non-indentical quantum emitters driven by a coherent field. We focus on the particular condition of two-photon resonance and obtain analytical expressions for the stationary density matrix of the system and observables of the fluorescent emission. Importantly, our expressions are valid for the general situation of non-identical emitters with different transition energies. Our results allow us to determine the regime of parameters in which coherent two-photon excitation, enabled by the coherent coupling between emitters, is dominant over competing, first-or…
We report the first experimental demonstration of interference-induced spectral line elimination predicted by Zhu and Scully [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 388 (1996)] and Ficek and Rudolph [Phys. Rev. A 60, 4245 (1999)]. We drive an exciton transition of a self-assembled quantum dot in order to realize a two-level system exposed to bichromatic laser field and observe nearly complete elimination of the resonance fluorescence spectral line at the driving laser frequency. This is caused by quantum interference between coupled transitions among the doubly dressed excitonic states, without population trapp…
Quantum trajectory theory is the best mathematical set up to model continual observations of a quantum system and feedback based on the observed output. Inside this framework, we study how to enhance the squeezing of the fluorescence light emitted by a two-level atom, stimulated by a coherent monochromatic laser. In the presence of a Wiseman-Milburn feedback scheme, based on the homodyne detection of a fraction of the emitted light, we analyze the squeezing dependence on the various control parameters.

We discuss recent developments in measurement protocols that generate quantum entanglement between two remote qubits, focusing on the theory of joint continuous detection of their spontaneous emission. We consider a device geometry similar to that used in well-known Bell-state measurements, which we analyze using a conceptually transparent model of stochastic quantum trajectories; we use this to review photodetection, the most straightforward case, and then generalize to the diffusive trajectories from homodyne and heterodyne detection as well. Such quadrature measurement schemes are a realist…
We investigate the creation and control of emergent collective behavior and quantum correlations using feedback in an emitter-waveguide system using a minimal model. Employing homodyne detection of photons emitted from a laser-driven emitter ensemble into the modes of a waveguide allows to generate intricate dynamical phases. In particular, we show the emergence of a time-crystal phase, the transition to which is controlled by the feedback strength. Feedback enables furthermore the control of many-body quantum correlations, which become manifest in spin squeezing in the emitter ensemble. Devel…
Single quantum light-emitters are valuable resources for engineered quantum systems. They can function as robust single-photon generators, allow optical control of single spins, provide readout capabilities for atomic-scale sensors, and provide interfaces between stationary and flying qubits. Environmental factors can lead to single emitters exhibiting "blinking", whereby the fluorescence level switches between on and off states. Detailed characterisation of this blinking behaviour including determining the switching rates is often a powerful way to gain understanding about the underlying phys…
We demonstrate that intensity correlations of second order in the fluorescence light of N > 2 single- photon emitters may violate locality while the visibility of the signal remains below 71%. For this, we derive a homogeneous Bell-Wigner-type inequality, which can be applied to a broad class of experimental setups. We trace the violation of this inequality back to path entanglement created by the process of detection.
We demonstrate purely resonant continuous-wave optical laser excitation to coherently prepare an excitonic state of a single semiconductor quantum dot (QDs) inside a high quality pillar microcavity. As a direct proof of QD resonance fluorescence, the evolution from a single emission line to the characteristic Mollow triplet10 is observed under increasing pump power. By controlled utilization of weak coupling between the emitter and the fundamental cavity mode through Purcell-enhancement of the radiative decay, a strong suppression of pure dephasing is achieved, which reflects in close to Fouri…
We present an experimental realization of resonance fluorescence in squeezed vacuum. We strongly couple microwave-frequency squeezed light to a superconducting artificial atom and detect the resulting fluorescence with high resolution enabled by a broadband traveling-wave parametric amplifier. We investigate the fluorescence spectra in the weak and strong driving regimes, observing up to 3.1 dB of reduction of the fluorescence linewidth below the ordinary vacuum level and a dramatic dependence of the Mollow triplet spectrum on the relative phase of the driving and squeezed vacuum fields. Our r…
We study phase-dependent fluctuations of the resonance fluorescence of a single $Λ$-type three-level atom in the regime near coherent population trapping, i.e., alongside the two-photon detuning condition. To this end, we employ the method of conditional homodyne detection (CHD) which considers squeezing in the weak driving regime, and extends to non-Gaussian fluctuations for saturating and strong fields. In this framework, and using estimated parameter settings of the resonance fluorescence of a single trapped $^{138} \mathrm{Ba}^{+}$ ion, the light scattered from the probe transitions is fou…
Efficient on-chip integration of single-photon emitters imposes a major bottleneck for applications of photonic integrated circuits in quantum technologies. Resonantly excited solid-state emitters are emerging as near-optimal quantum light sources, if not for the lack of scalability of current devices. Current integration approaches rely on cost-inefficient individual emitter placement in photonic integrated circuits, rendering applications impossible. A promising scalable platform is based on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. However, resonant excitation and single-photon emission of waveg…
In this paper we show that the scattered field of a bichromatically driven V-type three-level atom exhibit asymmetry and large violation of classical bounds in amplitude-intensity correlations. These features result from the noncommutativity of amplitude and intensity field operators, and the strong non-Gaussian fluctuations in this system. The amplitude-intensity correlations of resonance fluorescence, with its large third-order fluctuations, describe the nonclassical features of the emitted field more accurately than the second-order measure related to squeezing. Spectra and variances of the…
We describe a technique for fabricating micro- and nano-structures incorporating fluorescent defects in diamond with a positional accuracy in the hundreds of nanometers. Using confocal fluorescence microscopy and focused ion beam (FIB) etching we first locate a suitable defect with respect to registration marks on the diamond surface and then etch a structure using these coordinates. We demonstrate the technique here by etching an 8 micron diameter hemisphere positioned such that a single negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy defect lies at its origin. This type of structure increases the photon…
Assembly of quantum nanophotonic systems with plasmonic resonators are important for fundamental studies of single photon sources as well as for on-chip information processing. In this work, we demonstrate controllable nanoassembly of gold nanospheres with ultra-bright quantum emitters in 2D layered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We utilize an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip to precisely position gold nanospheres to close proximity of the quantum emitters and observe the resulting emission enhancement and fluorescence lifetime reduction. A fluorescence enhancement of over 300% is achieved ex…
We present an approach for the description of fluorescence from optically active material embedded in layered periodic structures. Based on an exact electromagnetic Green's tensor analysis, we determine the radiative properties of emitters such as the local photonic density of states, Lamb shifts, line widths etc. for a finite or infinite sequence of thin alternating plasmonic and dielectric layers. In the effective medium limit, these systems may exhibit hyperbolic dispersion relations so that the large wave-vector characteristics of all constituents and processes become relevant. These inclu…
In this work we experimentally demonstrate for the first time a recently proposed criterion adressed to detect nonclassical behavior in the fluorescence emission of ensembles of single-photon emitters. In particular, we apply the method to study clusters of NV centres in diamond observed via single-photon-sensitive confocal microscopy. Theoretical considerations on the behavior of the parameter at any arbitrary order in presence of poissonian noise are presented and, finally, the opportunity of detecting manifold coincidences is discussed.
We investigate interference and correlation effects when several detuned emitters are placed along a one-dimensional photonic waveguide. Such a setup allows multiple interactions between the photons and the strongly coupled emitters, and underlies proposed devices for quantum information processing. We show, first, that a pair of detuned two-level systems (2LS) separated by a half wavelength mimic a driven Λ-type three-level system (3LS) in both the single- and two- photon sectors. There is an interference-induced transparency peak at which the fluorescence is quenched, leaving the transmitted…
In this work, dissipative effects from a phonon bath on the resonance fluorescence of a solid state two level system embedded in a high quality semiconductor microcavity and driven by an intense laser, are investigated. Within the density operator formalism, we derive a variational master equation valid for broader ranges of temperatures, pumping rates, and radiation-matter couplings, than previous studies. From the obtained master equation, fluorescence spectra for various thermal and exciting conditions are numerically calculated, and compared to those computed from weak coupling and polaron…
Localized radiation sources are analyzed with respect to the relation of nonclassicality and quantum entanglement of the emitted light. The source field parts of the radiation emitted in different directions are closely related to each other. As a consequence, nonclassicality of the light fields in one direction directly implies entanglement of the field modes in different directions. This implication can be extended to multipartite-entanglement and multi-time quantum correlations. Given that a nonclassical effect is observed, our approach explicitly yields the multipartite entanglement witnes…
Defect-based quantum emitters in solid state materials offer a promising platform for quantum communication and sensing. Confocal fluorescence microscopy techniques have revealed quantum emitters in a multitude of host materials. In some materials, however, optical properties vary widely between emitters, even within the same sample. In these cases, traditional ensemble fluorescence measurements are confounded by heterogeneity, whereas individual defect-by-defect studies are impractical. Here, we develop a method to quantitatively and systematically analyze the properties of heterogeneous emit…
Photonic quantum technologies call for scalable quantum light sources that can be integrated, while providing the end user with single and entangled photons on-demand. One promising candidate are strain free GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots obtained by droplet etching. Such quantum dots exhibit ultra low multi-photon probability and an unprecedented degree of photon pair entanglement. However, different to commonly studied InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots obtained by the Stranski-Krastanow mode, photons with a near-unity indistinguishability from these quantum emitters have proven to be elusive so far. Here, …
In this paper we derive a general expression for the emission rate of an emitter which is placed at the center of a real cavity drilled in a generic random medium. We apply our formalism to the computation of the decay rate of a single atom which seats within a small molecule embedded in a continuous medium.
Fluorescence lifetimes of nitrogen-vacancy color centers in individual diamond nanocrystals were measured at the interface between a glass substrate and a strongly scattering medium. Comparison of the results with values recorded from the same nanocrystals at the glass-air interface revealed fluctuations of fluorescence lifetimes in the scattering medium. After discussing a range of possible systematic effects, we attribute the observed lengthening of the lifetimes to the reduction of the local density of states. Our approach is very promising for exploring the strong three-dimensional localiz…
