We report new results regarding a source of polarization entangled photon-pairs created by the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion in two orthogonally oriented, periodically poled, bulk KTiOPO4 crystals (PPKTP). The source emits light colinearly at the non-degenerate wavelengths of 810 nm and 1550 nm, and is optimized for single-mode optical fiber collection and long-distance quantum communication. The configuration favors long crystals, which promote a high photon-pair production rate at a narrow bandwidth, together with a high pair-probability in fibers. The quality of entanglement is limited by chromatic dispersion, which we analyze by determining the output state. We find that such a decoherence effect is strongly material dependent, providing for long crystals an upper bound on the visibility of the coincidence fringes of 41% for KTiOPO4, and zero for LiNbO3. The best obtained raw visibility, when canceling decoherence with an extra piece of crystal, was 91 \pm 0.2%, including background counts. We confirm by a violation of the CHSH-inequality (S = 2.679 \pm 0.004 at 55 s^{-1/2} standard deviations) and by complete quantum state tomography that the fibers carry high-quality entangled pairs at a maximum rate of 55 x 10^3 s^{-1}THz^{-1}mW^{-1}.
We transform the way of finding entanglement criterion into two steps: to obtain necessary criterion of separability by maximizing an algebra function for a set of characteristic variables of the witness operator and the given number of partitions, then to obtain the sufficient criterion by minimizing an algebra function with respect to the characteristic variables for a given quantum state. Our method avoids the semi-definite program calculation in the witness operator entanglement detection. The necessary and sufficient criterion of separability for the three qubit X shaped state is given to…
We use quantum entanglement witnesses derived from Gaussian operators to study the separable criteria of continuous variable states. We transform the validity of a Gaussian witness to a Bosonic Gaussian channel problem. It follows that the maximal means of two-mode and some four-mode Gaussian operators over product pure states are achieved by vacuum (or coherent states and squeezed states) according to the properties of Bosonic Gaussian channels. Then we have necessary and sufficient criteria of separability not only for Gaussian quantum states, but also for non-Gaussian states prepared by pho…
Entanglement of high dimensional states is becoming increasingly important for quantum communication and computing. The most common source of entangled photons is spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), where the degree of frequency and momentum entanglement is determined by the non-linear interaction volume. Here we show that by reducing the length of a highly non-linear material to the micrometer scale it is possible to relax the longitudinal phase matching condition and reach record levels of transverse wavevector entanglement. From a micro-sized layer of lithium niobate we estimate …
We present a quantum theory of parametric down-conversion of light in chirped quasi-phase-matched second-order nonlinear crystals with undepleted quasi-monochromatic pump. This theory allows us to consider generation of ultrabroadband squeezed states of light and is valid for arbitrary, sufficiently slowly-varying nonlinear poling profiles. Using a first-order approximate quantum solution for the down-converted light field, we calculate the squeezing spectra and the characteristic squeezing angles. We compare the approximate solutions with the exact and numerical ones and find a very good agre…

The use of multidimensional entanglement opens new perspectives for quantum information processing. However, an important challenge in practice is to certify and characterize multidimensional entanglement from measurement data that are typically limited. Here, we report the certification and quantification of two-photon multidimensional energy-time entanglement between many temporal modes, after one photon has been stored in a crystal. We develop a method for entanglement quantification which makes use of only sparse data obtained with limited resources. This allows us to efficiently certify a…
We report a simple scheme for direct generation of frequency-bin entangled photon pairs via spontaneous parametric downconversion. Our fabricated nonlinear optical crystal with two different poling periods can simultaneously satisfy two different, spectrally symmetric nondegenerate quasi-phase-matching conditions, enabling the direct generation of entanglement in two discrete frequency-bin modes. Our produced photon pairs exhibited Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with high-visibility beating oscillations, a signature of two-mode frequency-bin entanglement. Moreover, we demonstrate deterministic en…
We report on the experimental realization of a ten-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state using thin BiB$_{3}$O$_{6}$ crystals. The observed fidelity is $0.606\pm0.029$, demonstrating a genuine entanglement with a standard deviation of 3.6 $σ$. This result is further verified using $p$-value calculation, obtaining an upper bound of $3.7\times10^{-3}$ under an assumed hypothesis test. Our experiment paves a new way to efficiently engineer BiB$_{3}$O$_{6}$ crystal-based multi-photon entanglement systems, which provides a promising platform for investigating advanced optical quantum information…
Owing to their long excited state lifetimes, rare-earth ions in crystals are widely used in quantum applications. To allow optical readout of the qubit state of individual ions, we propose to dope the crystal with an additional nearby ancilla ion with a shorter radiative lifetime. We show how a Bayesian analysis exhausts the information about the state of the qubit from the optical signal of the ancilla ion. We study the effects of incoherent processes and propose ways to reduce their effect on the readout. Finally, we extend the architecture to ions residing in two remote cavities, and we sho…
We show that two spatially separated semiconductor quantum dots under resonant and continuous-wave excitation can be strongly entangled in the steady-state, thanks to their radiative coupling by mutual interaction through the normal modes of a photonic crystal dimer. We employ a quantum master equation formalism to quantify the steady-state entanglement by calculating the system {\it negativity}. Calculations are specified to consider realistic semiconductor nanostructure parameters for the photonic crystal dimer-quantum dots coupled system, determined by a guided mode expansion solution of Ma…
For advanced quantum information technology, sources of photon pairs in quantum mechanically factorable states are of great importance for realizing high-fidelity photon-photon quantum gate operations. Here we experimentally demonstrate a technique to produce spectrally factorable photon pairs utilizing multi-order quasi-phase-matching (QPM) conditions in spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). In our scheme, a spatial nonlinearity profile of a nonlinear optical crystal is shaped with current standard poling techniques, and the associated phase-matching function can be approximated to a …
We investigate the quantum entanglement of the three modes associated with the three-photon states obtained by triple-photon generation in a phase-matched third-order nonlinear optical interaction. Although the second order processes have been extensively dealt with, there is no direct analogy between the second and third-order mechanisms. We show for example the absence of quantum entanglement between the quadratures of the three modes in the case of spontaneous parametric triple-photon generation. However, we show that genuine triple-photon entanglement is obtained in the fully seeded case, …
Frequency encoding is quickly becoming an attractive prospect for quantum information protocols owing to larger Hilbert spaces and increased resilience to noise compared to other photonic degrees of freedom. To fully make use of frequency encoding as a practical paradigm for QIP, an efficient and simple source of frequency entanglement is required. Here we present a single-pass source of discrete frequency-bin entanglement which does not use filtering or a resonant cavity. We use a domain-engineered nonlinear crystal to generate an eight-mode frequency-bin entangled source at telecommunication…
We show how to create maximal entanglement between spectrally distinct solid-state emitters embedded in a waveguide interferometer. By revealing the rich underlying structure of multi-photon scattering in emitters, we show that a two-photon input state can generate deterministic maximal entanglement even for emitters with significantly different transition energies and line-widths. The optimal frequency of the input is determined by two competing processes: which-path erasure and interaction strength. We find that smaller spectral overlap can be overcome with higher photon numbers, and quasi-m…
Using two crystals for spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a parallel setup, we observe two-photon interference with high visibility. The high visibility is consistent with complementarity and the absence of which-path information. The observations are explained as effects of entanglement or equivalently in terms of interfering probability amplitudes, and also by the calculation of a second-order field correlation function in the Heisenberg picture. The latter approach brings out explicitly the role of the vacuum fields in the down-conversion at the crystals and in the photon coincidence…

Continuous variables multipartite entanglement is a key resource for quantum technologies. This works considers the multipartite entanglement generated in separated spatial modes of the same light beam by three different parametric sources: a standard $χ^{(2)}$ medium pumped by two pumps, a single-pump nonlinear photonic crystal, and a doubly pumped nonlinear photonic crystal. These sources have in common the coexistence of several concurrent nonlinear processes in the same medium, which allows the generation of non-standard 3 and 4-mode couplings. We test the genuine nature of the multipartit…
We propose methods to perform intensity interferometry of photons having two different wavelengths. Distinguishable particles typically cannot interfere with each other, but we overcome that obstacle by processing the particles via entanglement and projection so that they lead to the same final state at the detection apparatus. Specifically, we discuss how quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystals can be used to convert a quantum superposition of light of different wavelengths onto a common wavelength, while preserving the phase information essential for their meaningful interference. We thereby …
Phenomena such as state-swap, quadrature squeezing, entanglement and violation of entanglement inequalities are frequently reported to occur in quantum systems only. It is shown here that these effects can also occur in cholesteric liquid crystals in the presence of an applied magnetic field. The nature of these effects as well as the conditions for their observation are analysed.
We use matched quantum entanglement witnesses to study the separable criteria of continuous variable states. The witness can be written as an identity operator minus a Gaussian operator. The optimization of the witness then is transformed to an eigenvalue problem of a Gaussian kernel integral equation. It follows a separable criterion not only for symmetric Gaussian quantum states, but also for non-Gaussian states prepared by photon adding to or/and subtracting from symmetric Gaussian states. Based on Fock space numeric calculation, we obtain an entanglement witness for more general two-mode s…
Higher-order topological insulator, as a newly found non-trivial material and structure, possesses a topological phase beyond the bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we present an experimental observation of photonic higher-order topological crystalline insulator and its topological protection to quantum superposition and entanglement in a two-dimensional lattice. By freely writing the insulator structure with femtosecond laser and directly measuring evolution dynamics with single-photon imaging techniques, we are able to observe the distinct features of the topological corner states in C_4 an…
We present an experimental demonstration of a bright and high fidelity polarization entangled photon pair source. The source is constructed using two critically phase matched $β$-Barium Borate crystals with parallel optical axes and photon pairs are collected after filtering with a circular field-stop. Near unity fidelities are obtained with detected pair rates exceeding \SI{100000}{pairs/\s/\mW} approaching the brightness of practical quasi-phase matched entangled photon sources. We find that the brightness scales linearly with the crystal length. We present models supporting the experimental…
Future quantum networks will enable the distribution of entanglement between distant locations and allow applications in quantum communication, quantum sensing and distributed quantum computation. At the core of this network lies the ability of generating and storing entanglement at remote, interconnected quantum nodes. While remote physical systems of various nature have been successfully entangled, none of these realisations encompassed all of the requirements for network operation, such as telecom-compatibility and multimode operation. Here we report the demonstration of heralded entangleme…
