The random switching of measurement bases is commonly assumed to be a necessary step of quantum key distribution protocols. In this paper we show that switching is not required for coherent state continuous variable quantum key distribution. We show this via the no-switching protocol which results in higher information rates and a simpler experimental setup. We propose an optimal eavesdropping attack against this protocol, for individual Gaussian attacks, and we investigate and compare the no-switching protocol applied to the original BB84 scheme.
We realize an end-to-end no-switching quantum key distribution protocol using continuous-wave coherent light. We encode weak broadband Gaussian modulations onto the amplitude and phase quadratures of light beams at the Shannon's information limit. Our no-switching protocol achieves high secret key rate via a post-selection protocol that utilizes both quadrature information simultaneously. We establish a secret key rate of 25 Mbits/s for a lossless channel and 1 kbit/s, per 17 MHz of detected bandwidth, for 90% channel loss. Since our scheme is truly broadband, it can potentially deliver orders…
The Gaussian quantum key distribution protocol based on coherent states and heterodyne detection [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 170504 (2004)] has the advantage that no active random basis switching is needed on the receiver's side. Its security is, however, not very satisfyingly understood today because the bounds on the secret key rate that have been derived from Heisenberg relations are not attained by any known scheme. Here, we address the problem of the optimal Gaussian individual attack against this protocol, and derive tight upper bounds on the information accessible to an eavesdropper. The opti…
An optical resonator with intracavity Kerr nonlinearity can exhibit dispersive bistability suitable for all-optical switching. With nanophotonic elements it may be possible to achieve attojoule switching energies, which would be very attractive for ultra-low power operation but potentially problematic because of quantum fluctuation-induced spontaneous switching. In this manuscript I derive a quantum-optical model of two Kerr-nonlinear ring resonators connected in a coherent feedback loop, and show via numerical simulation that a properly designed `controller' cavity can significantly reduce th…
Quantum coherent control of slow light for all-optical switching is investigated in a multi-level system of solids for an understanding of self-induced ultraslow light. In an optical population shelving system of a rare-earth doped solid, dynamics of the slow light are presented by using a third optical field controlling shelved atom population. Unlike two-photon coherence-based delayed all-optical switching utilizing electromagnetically induced transparency, the present method relies on one-photon coherence controlling shelved atom population.
We propose a scheme for attaining slow and fast light via coherent control of the hyperfine ground and excited states of an ultracold atomic system. The proposed scheme is theoretically analyzed for the $D_1$ transition of ultracold $^{23}$ Na atoms. The role of field detuning and field intensity on both the population transfer and induced polarization is investigated. It is shown that slow and fast light, with large bandwidth could be obtained in the proposed system. It is inferred that both slow and fast light could co-propagate, pertaining to different optical and Raman transitions. Further…
We consider coherent feedback control of quantum transport and focus on the application of simple controllers and the effects of a finite bias voltage. We show that simple single-parameter controllers can give rise to a range of useful effects such as amplification of changes in plant transmission, increased resolution of energy filtration, and the detection of differences between otherwise indistinguishable plants. We explore how these effects are impacted by the phase-averaging effects associated with the application of a finite bias and identify important voltage scales for the maintenance …
The expectation values of a hermitean operator A in (2s+1)(2s+1) specific coherent states of a spin are known to determine the operator unambiguously. As shown here, (almost) any other (2s+1)(2s+1) coherent states also provide a basis for self-adjoint operators. This is proven by considering the determinant of the Gram matrix associated with the coherent state projectors as a Hamiltonian of a fictitious classical spin system.
I consider the interaction of a superposition of mesoscopic coherent states and its approach to a mixed state as a result of a suitably controlled environment. I show how the presence of a gain medium in a cavity can lead to diagonalization in coherent state basis in contrast to the standard model of decoherence. I further show how the new model of decoherence can lead to the generation of $s$ ordered quasi distributions.
An explicit solution of the equation for the classical harmonic oscillator with smooth switching of the frequency has been found . A detailed analysis of a quantum harmonic oscillator with such frequency has been done on the base of the method of linear invariants. It has been shown that such oscillator possesses cofluctuant states, different from widely studied Glauber's coherent and "ideal" squeezed states.
We propose a new coherent state quantum key distribution protocol that eliminates the need to randomly switch between measurement bases. This protocol provides significantly higher secret key rates with increased bandwidths than previous schemes that only make single quadrature measurements. It also offers the further advantage of simplicity compared to all previous protocols which, to date, have relied on switching.
Quantum entanglement generation is generally known to be impossible by any classical means. According to Poisson statistics, coherent photons are not considered quantum particles due to the bunching phenomenon. Recently, a coherence approach has been applied to interpret quantum features such as the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, Franson-type nonlocal correlation, and delayed-choice quantum eraser, where the quantum feature is due to basis-product superposition at the cost of 50 % photon loss. For this, it has been understood that a fixed sum-phase relation between paired photons is the bedrock …
Relevance of key quantum information measures for analysis of quantum systems is discussed. It is argued that possible ways of measuring quantum information are based on compatibility/incompatibility of the quantum states of a quantum system, resulting in the coherent information and introduced here the compatible information measures, respectively. A sketch of an information optimization of a quantum experimental setup is proposed.
The time-dependent numerical renormalization-group approach (TD-NRG), originally devised for tracking the real-time dynamics of quantum-impurity systems following a single quantum quench, is extended to multiple switching events. This generalization of the TD-NRG encompasses the possibility of periodic switching, allowing for coherent control of strongly correlated systems by an external time-dependent field. To this end, we have embedded the TD-NRG in a hybrid framework that combines the outstanding capabilities of the numerical renormalization group to systematically construct the effective …
The cascaded decay in a four-level quantum emitter is a well established mechanism to generate polarization entangled photon pairs, the building blocks of many applications in quantum technologies. The four most prominent maximally entangled photon pair states are the Bell states. In a typical experiment based on an undriven emitter only one type of Bell state entanglement can be observed in a given polarization basis. Other types of Bell state entanglement in the same basis can be created by continuously driving the system by an external laser. In this work we propose a protocol for time-depe…
We propose a novel interaction-free scheme for all-optical switching which does not rely on the physical coupling between signal and control waves. The interaction-free nature of the scheme allows it to overcome the fundamental photon-loss limit imposed by the signal-pump coupling. The same phenomenon protects photonic-signal states from decoherence, making devices based on this scheme suitable for quantum applications. Focusing on $χ^{(2)}$ waveguides, we provide device designs for traveling-wave and Fabry-Perot switches. In both designs, the performance is optimal when the signal switching i…
We investigate the switching of the coherent emission mode of a bimodal microcavity device, occurring when the pump power is varied. We compare experimental data to theoretical results and identify the underlying mechanism to be based on the competition between the effective gain on the one hand and the intermode kinetics on the other. When the pumping is ramped up, above a threshold the mode with the largest effective gain starts to emit coherent light, corresponding to lasing. In contrast, in the limit of strong pumping it is the intermode kinetics that determines which mode acquires a large…
The Bell basis, a set of maximally entangled biphoton state, is a critical prerequisite towards quantum information processing, and many quantum applications have highlighted the requirement for the manipulation of high-dimensional Bell basis. While the Bell states can be created by using ingenious single-photon quantum gates, its implementation complexity in higher dimensions is significantly increased. Here we present an elaborate approach to show that the adaptive pump modulation enable the efficient preparation of Bell basis in arbitrary-dimensional Hilbert space. A complete set of four-di…
Future information technology demands ultimately fast, low-loss quantum control. Intense light fields have facilitated important milestones, such as inducing novel states of matter, accelerating electrons ballistically, or coherently flipping the valley pseudospin. These dynamics leave unique signatures, such as characteristic bandgaps or high-order harmonic radiation. The fastest and least dissipative way of switching the technologically most important quantum attribute - the spin - between two states separated by a potential barrier is to trigger an all-coherent precession. Pioneering experi…
The strange property of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation between two remote physical systems is a primitive object on the study of quantum entanglement. In order to understand the entanglement in canonical continuous-variable systems, a pair of the EPR-like uncertainties is an essential tool. Here, we consider a normalized pair of the EPR-like uncertainties and introduce a state-overlap to a classically correlated mixture of coherent states. The separable condition associated with this state-overlap determines the strength of the EPR-like correlation on a coherent-state basis in o…
We have previously shown that the quantum Zeno effect can be used to implement quantum logic gates for quantum computing applications, where the Zeno effect was produced using a strong two-photon absorbing medium. Here we show that the Zeno effect can also be used to implement classical logic gates whose inputs and outputs are high-intensity fields (coherent states). The operation of the devices can be understood using a quasi-static analysis, and their switching times are calculated using a dynamic approach. The two-photon absorption coefficient of rubidium vapor is shown to allow operation o…
The calculating of the coherent information is a fundamental step in obtaining the quantum capacity of a quantum channel. We introduce orthogonal and complete code basis to evaluate the coherent information per channel use when the input is the maximal mixture of stabilizer codewords. In the code basis, the output density matrix is diagonal, the joint output of the system and the auxiliary is block diagonal. The coherent information is worked out by counting the weights of error operators.
We introduce graph state basis diagonalization to calculate the coherent information of a quantum code passing through a Pauli channel. The scheme is 5000 times faster than the best known one for some concatenated repetition codes, providing us a practical constructive way of approaching the quantum capacity of a Pauli channel. The calculation of the coherent information of non-additive quantum code can also be greatly simplified in graph state basis.
The construction of a class of unitary operators generating linear superpositions of generalized coherent states from the ground state of a quantum harmonic oscillator is reported. Such a construction, based on the properties of a new ad hoc introduced set of hermitian operators, leads to the definition of new basis in the oscillator Hilbert space, extending in a natural way the displaced Fock states basis. The potential development of our method and our results is briefly outlined.
We discuss the time-continuous path integration in the coherent states basis in a way that is free from inconsistencies. Employing this notion we reproduce known and exact results working directly in the continuum. Such a formalism can set the basis to develop perturbative and non-perturbative approximations already known in the quantum field theory community. These techniques can be proven useful in a great variety of problems where bosonic Hamiltonians are used.
We use a single squeezed state to represent a qubit, which can be coherently processed in a deconvolution picture (DP) in the presence of noise. We avail ourselves of the fact that when evolution is governed by a quadratic dissipative equation, there exists a basis of squeezed states that evolves to another basis of such states in the DP. An operator acts as an impurity filter, restoring the coherence lost from the inexorable interactions of the qubit with its surroundings.
We show that the $N$-photon generalized binomial states of electromagnetic field may be put in a bijective mapping with the coherent atomic states of $N$ two-level atoms. We exploit this correspondence to simply obtain both known and new properties of the $N$-photon generalized binomial states. In particular, an over-complete basis of these binomial states and an orthonormal basis are obtained. Finally, the squeezing properties of generalized binomial state are analyzed.
Glauber-Sudarshan diagonal coherent state P-representation has been used to determine geometric phase for non-classical states of light. For a given density operator $\hat{ρ_1}$ of two mode optical beam, we evolve it in complex projective ray space $(\cal R)$ to $\hat{ρ_2}$ and to $\hat{ρ_3}$ by changing its state of polarisation using unitary operator $\mathrm{\hat{U}_p}(θ)$. The diagonal coherent state basis has been utilized to represent the density operators instead of fock state basis as in the fock state basis the state vector in present work evolve under unitary operator produe infinite…
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is observed in a three-level system composed of an excited state and two coherent superpositions of the two ground-state levels. This peculiar ground state basis is composed of the so-called bright and dark states of the same atomic system in a standard coherent population trapping configuration. The characteristics of EIT, namely, width of the transmission window and reduced group velocity of light, in this unusual basis, are theoretically and experimentally investigated and are shown to be essentially identical to those of standard EIT in the sa…
Light transport in a disordered ensemble of resonant atoms placed in a waveguide is found to be very sensitive to the sizes of cross section of a waveguide. Based on self-consistent quantum microscopic model treating atoms as coherent radiating dipoles, we have shown that the nature of radiation transfer changes from Anderson localization regime in a single-mode waveguide to a traditional diffuse transfer in a multi-mode one. Moreover, the transmittance magnitude undergoes complex step-like dependence on the transverse sizes of a waveguide.
Direct dynamics methods using Gaussian wavepackets have to rely only on local properties, such as gradients and hessians at the center of the wavepacket, so as to be compatible with the usual quantum chemistry methods. Matrix elements of the potential energy surfaces between wavepackets therefore usually have to be approximated. It is shown, that if a modified form of valence bond theory is used instead of the usual MO-based theories, the matrix elements can be obtained exactly. This is so because the molecular Hamiltonian only contains the Coulomb potential, for which matrix elements between …
Scalable quantum photonic networks require coherent excitation of quantum emitters. However, many solid-state systems can undergo a transition to a dark shelving state that inhibits the fluorescence. Here we demonstrate that a controlled gating using a weak non-resonant laser, the resonant excitation can be recovered and amplified for single germanium vacancies (GeVs). Employing the gated resonance excitation, we achieve optically stable resonance fluorescence of GeV centers. Our results are pivotal for the deployment of diamond color centers as reliable building blocks for scalable solid stat…
We propose a novel ultrafast electronic switching device based on dual-graphene electron waveguides, in analogy to the optical dual-channel waveguide device. The design utilizes the principle of coherent quantum mechanical tunneling of Rabi oscillations between the two graphene electron waveguides. Based on a modified coupled mode theory, we construct a theoretical model to analyse the device characteristics, and predict that the swtiching speed is faster than 1 ps. Due to the long mean free path of electrons in graphene at room temperature, the proposed design avoids the limitation of low tem…
We establish some of the properties of the states interpolating between number and coherent states denoted by $| n >_λ$; among them are the reproducing of these states by the action of an operator-valued function on $| n>$ (the standard Fock space) and the fact that they can be regarded as $f$-deformed coherent bound states. In this paper we use them, as the basis of our new Fock space which in this case are not orthogonal but normalized. Then by some special superposition of them we obtain new representations for coherent and squeezed states in the new basis. Finally the statistical propertie…
Coherent states in the time-energy plane provide a natural basis to study adiabatic scattering. We relate the (diagonal) matrix elements of the scattering matrix in this basis with the frozen on-shell scattering data. We describe an exactly solvable model, and show that the error in the frozen data cannot be estimated by the Wigner time delay alone. We introduce the notion of energy shift, a conjugate of Wigner time delay, and show that for incoming state $ρ(H_0)$ the energy shift determines the outgoing state.
The coherent state method has proved to be useful in quantum physics and mathematics. This method, more precisely, the vector coherent state method, has been used by some authors to construct representations of superalgebras but almost, to our knowledge, it has not yet been extended to quantum superalgebras, except $U_q[osp(1|2)]$, one of the smallest quantum superalgebras. In this article the method is applied to a bigger quantum superalgebra, namely $U_q[gl(2|1)]$, in constructing $q$--boson-fermion realizations and finite-dimensional representations which, when irreducible, are classified i…
