The cascaded decay in a four-level quantum emitter is a well established mechanism to generate polarization entangled photon pairs, the building blocks of many applications in quantum technologies. The four most prominent maximally entangled photon pair states are the Bell states. In a typical experiment based on an undriven emitter only one type of Bell state entanglement can be observed in a given polarization basis. Other types of Bell state entanglement in the same basis can be created by continuously driving the system by an external laser. In this work we propose a protocol for time-dependent entanglement switching in a four-level quantum emitter--cavity system that can be operated by changing the external driving strength. By selecting different two-photon resonances between the laser-dressed states, we can actively switch back and forth between the different types of Bell state entanglement in the same basis as well as between entangled and nonentangled photon pairs. This remarkable feature demonstrates the possibility to achieve a controlled, time-dependent manipulation of the entanglement type that could be used in many innovative applications.
In this paper, we investigate the energy spectrum and coherent dynamical process in a cavity-QED setup with a moving emitter, which is subject to a harmonic potential. We find that the vibration of the emitter will induce the effective Kerr and optomechanical interactions. We generalize the Bogliubov operators approach which dealt with quantum Rabi model, to our cavity-emitter-vibration system and obtain the energy spectrum exactly. With the assistance of Bogliubov operators approach, we obtain the energy spectrum of the system exactly. Furthermore, we show that the dynamics of the system exhi…
We study collective effects in an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble of two-level emitters coupled to an optical cavity with narrow linewidth. Using second order mean field theory we find that the emitters within a few times the cavity linewidth exhibit synchronous behaviour and undergo collective Rabi oscillations. Under proper conditions, the synchronized oscillations give rise to a modulated intracavity field which can excite emitters detuned by many linewidths from the cavity resonance. To study the synchronization in further detail, we simplify the model and consider two ensembles and stu…
Single quantum light-emitters are valuable resources for engineered quantum systems. They can function as robust single-photon generators, allow optical control of single spins, provide readout capabilities for atomic-scale sensors, and provide interfaces between stationary and flying qubits. Environmental factors can lead to single emitters exhibiting "blinking", whereby the fluorescence level switches between on and off states. Detailed characterisation of this blinking behaviour including determining the switching rates is often a powerful way to gain understanding about the underlying phys…
We study the laser-driven Dicke model beyond the rotating-wave approximation. For weak coupling of the system to environmental degrees of freedom the dissipative dynamics of the emitter-cavity system is described by the Floquet master equation. Projection of the system evolution onto the emitter degrees of freedom results in non-Markovian behavior. We quantify the non-Markovianity of the resulting emitter dynamics and show that this quantity can be used as an indicator of the dissipative quantum phase transition occurring at high driving amplitudes.
We analyze the quantum dynamics of a two-level emitter in a resonant microcavity with optical feedback provided by a distant mirror (i.e., a half-cavity) with a focus on stabilizing the emitter-microcavity subsystem. Our treatment is fully carried out in the framework of cavity quantum electrodynamics. Specifically, we focus on the dynamics of a perturbed dark state of the emitter to ascertain its stability (existence of time oscillatory solutions around the candidate state) or lack thereof. In particular, we find conditions under which multiple feedback modes of the half cavity contribute to …
Cavity-embedded quantum emitters show strong modifications of free space radiation properties such as an enhanced decay known as the Purcell effect. The central parameter is the cooperativity $C$, the ratio of the square of the coherent cavity coupling strength over the product of cavity and emitter decay rates. For a single emitter, $C$ is independent of the transition dipole moment and dictated by geometric cavity properties such as finesse and mode waist. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 093601 (2017)] we have shown that collective excitations in ensembles of dipole-dipole coupled qu…
We show that two-photon transport can be modulated by a two-level emitter coupled to a cavity in a one-dimensional waveguide. In the ordinary case, the transmitted light has a wider frequency spectrum than the situation without the cavity because it is reflected and scattered many times. But when the two photons are resonant with the cavity resonance reflection frequency, the frequency spectrum of the transmitted light becomes narrower than that without the cavity. This means that properly tuning the cavity resonance frequency can improve the photon-photon interaction. In addition, we show tha…
The radiation emitted by a classically pumped three-level $Λ$-type emitter in a resonator cavity featuring both radiative and unwanted losses is studied. In particular, the efficiency of one-photon Fock state excitation of the outgoing wave packet and the spatio-temporal shape of the wave packet are investigated. It is shown that for given shape of the emitter--cavity interaction, adjusting the shape of the pump pulse renders it possible to generate the emission of one-photon Fock state wave packets of desired shape with high efficiency.
I theoretically study the behavior of strong pulses exciting emitters inside a cavity. The ensemble is supposed to be inhomogeneously broadened and the cavity matched finding application in quantum storage of optical or RF photons. My analysis is based on energy and pulse area conservation rules predicting important distortions for specific areas. It is well supported by numerical simulations. I propose a qualitative interpretation in terms of slow-light. The analogy with the free space situation is remarkable.
We propose a scheme for the ultrafast control of the emitter-field coupling rate in cavity quantum electrodynamics. This is achieved by the control of the vacuum field seen by the emitter through a modulation of the optical modes in a coupled-cavity structure. The scheme allows the on/off switching of the coupling rate without perturbing the emitter and without introducing frequency chirps on the emitted photons. It can be used to control the shape of single-photon pulses for high-fidelity quantum state transfer, to control Rabi oscillations and as a gain-modulation method in lasers. We discus…
We consider an ensemble of cavity-coupled two-level emitters interacting via full (coherent and dissipative) dipole-dipole interactions. Using an adiabatic elimination procedure we derive effective equations of motion for a subsystem consisting of the cavity and a single emitter. Those equations can be used for schemes to enhance the cavity-coupling of single emitters as shown in [S. Schütz, J. Schachenmayer, D. Hagenmüller, G. K. Brennen, T. Volz, V. Sandoghdar, T. W. Ebbesen, C. Genes, and G. Pupillo, e-print arXiv:1904.08888]. We analyze limitations of effective subsystem parameters, and st…
We use the scattering matrix formalism to analyze photon blockade in coherently-driven CQED systems with a weak drive. By approximating the weak coherent drive by an input single- and two-photon Fock state, we reduce the computational complexity of the transmission and the two-photon correlation function from exponential to polynomial in the number of emitters. This enables us to easily analyze cavity-based systems containing $\sim$50 quantum emitters with modest computational resources. Using this approach we study the coherence statistics of polaritonic photon blockade while increasing the n…
Strong coupling between a single resonator mode and a single quantum emitter is key to a plethora of experiments and applications in quantum science and technology and is commonly described by means of the Jaynes-Cummings model. Here, we show that the Jaynes-Cummings model only applies when the cavity does not significantly change the emitter's emission rate into free-space. Most notably, the predictions made by the Jaynes-Cummings model become increasingly wrong when approaching the ideal emitter-resonator systems with no free-space decay channels. We present a Hamiltonian that provides, with…
Purcell-enhanced emission from a coupled emitter-cavity system is a fundamental manifestation of cavity quantum electrodynamics. Starting from a theoretical description we derive a scheme for photon emission from an emitter coupled to a birefringent cavity that exceeds hitherto anticipated limitations. Based on a recent study and experimental investigation of the intra-cavity coupling of orthogonal polarisation modes in birefringent cavities, we now decouple the emitter and the photon prior to emission from the cavity mode. Effectively, this is "hiding" the emitter from the photon in the cavit…
Within the framework of exact quantum electrodynamics in dispersing and absorbing media, we have studied the emission from an initially in the upper state prepared emitter in a high quality cavity in the case, when there are two cavity modes that resonantly interact with the emitter. In particular, when one of the modes is in resonance with the emitter transition and the other mode is tuned to the frequency equal to the Rabi splitting of the first mode, the effect of Rabi resonance is observed.
We present the effects of resonator birefringence on the cavity-enhanced interfacing of quantum states of light and matter, including the first observation of single photons with a time-dependent polarisation state that evolves within their coherence time. A theoretical model is introduced and experimentally verified by the modified polarisation of temporally-long single photons emitted from a $^{87}$Rb atom coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity by a vacuum-stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (V-STIRAP) process. Further theoretical investigation shows how a change in cavity birefringence can…
We study the characteristics of the light generated by few emitters in a cavity at strong light-matter coupling. By means of the Glauber $g^{(2)}$-function we can identify clearly distinguished parameter regimes with super-Poissonian and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. We establish a relation between the emission characteristics for one and multiple emitters, and explain its origin in terms of the photon-dressed emitter states. Cooperative effects lead to the generation of nonclassical light already at reduced light-matter coupling if the number of emitters is increased. Our results are obta…
We study the effect of mode-coupling on a single-photon device in which a dipole-quantum-emitter (DQE) is embedded in a bimodal whispering-gallery-mode cavity (WGMC). A scatterer is used to induce mode coupling between counter-clockwise and clockwise propagating light fields, which interact with the DQE. In contrast to models for the interaction between a DQE and a (one-mode or two-mode) cavity field, we find that strong photon antibunching can occur even for a weak DQE-field coupling and large dephasing of the DQE, when mode coupling is introduced. We also find that mode coupling can make the…
Bell states are the most prominent maximally entangled photon states. In a typical four-level emitter, like a semiconductor quantum dot, the photon states exhibit only one type of Bell state entanglement. By adding an external driving to the emitter system, also other types of Bell state entanglement are reachable without changing the polarization basis. In this paper, we show under which conditions the different types of entanglement occur and give analytical equations to explain these findings. We further identify special points, where the concurrence, being a measure for the degree of entan…
A criterion for strong coupling between two quantum emitters and a single resonant light mode in a cavity is presented. The criterion takes into account the escape of cavity photons and the spontaneous emission of the emitters, which are modeled as two level systems. By using such criterion, the dissipative Tavis-Cummings ladder of states is constructed, and it is shown that the inclusion of one more emitter with respect to the Jaynes-Cummings (single emitter) case increases the effective parameter region in which $n^{\text{th}}$ order Rabi splitting is observed.
We study the photon blockade phenomenon in a nanocavity containing a single four-level quantum emitter. By numerically simulating the second-order autocorrelation function of the intra-cavity field with realistic parameters achievable in a state-of-the-art photonic-crystal nanocavity, we show that in the strongly coupled regime the resulting photon blockade is significantly better than that achievable with a two-level emitter. We introduce an intuitive picture of the photon blockade with a four-level emitter that explains the performance difference between the two-level and the four-level emit…
We have theoretically studied the effect of deterministic temporal control of spontaneous emission in a dynamic optical microcavity. We propose a new paradigm in light emission: we envision an ensemble of two-level emitters in an environment where the local density of optical states is modified on a time scale shorter than the decay time. A rate equation model is developed for the excited state population of two-level emitters in a time-dependent environment in the weak coupling regime in quantum electrodynamics. As a realistic experimental system, we consider emitters in a semiconductor micro…
We discuss a technique to strongly couple a single target quantum emitter to a cavity mode, which is enabled by virtual excitations of a nearby mesoscopic ensemble of emitters. A collective coupling of the latter to both the cavity and the target emitter induces strong photon non-linearities in addition to polariton formation, in contrast to common schemes for ensemble strong coupling. We demonstrate that strong coupling at the level of a single emitter can be engineered via coherent and dissipative dipolar interactions with the ensemble, and provide realistic parameters for a possible impleme…
An array of $N$ closely spaced dipole coupled quantum emitters exhibits super- and subradiance with characteristic tailorable spatial radiation patterns. Optimizing their geometry and distance with respect to the spatial profile of a near resonant optical cavity mode allows to increase the ratio between light scattering into the cavity mode and free space by several orders of magnitude. This leads to a distinct nonlinear particle number scaling of the relative strength of coherent light-matter interactions versus decay. In particular, for subradiant states the collective cooperativity increase…
We investigate theoretically the coupling of a cavity mode to a continuous distribution of emitters. We discuss the influence of the emitters inhomogeneous broadening on the existence and on the coherence properties of the polaritonic peaks. We find that their coherence depends crucially on the shape of the distribution and not only on its width. Under certain conditions the coupling to the cavity protects the polaritonic states from inhomogeneous broadening, resulting in a longer storage time for a quantum memory based on emitters ensembles. When two different ensembles of emitters are couple…
The photon blockade (PB) effect in emitter-cavity systems depends on the anharmonicity of the ladder of dressed energy eigenstates. The recent developments in color center photonics are leading toward experimental demonstrations of multi-emitter-cavity solid-state systems with an expanded set of energy levels compared to the traditionally studied single-emitter systems. We focus on the case of N = 2 nonidentical quasi-atoms strongly coupled to a nanocavity in the bad cavity regime (with parameters within reach of the color center systems), and discover three PB mechanisms: polaritonic, subradi…
Recent technological advances in cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) are paving the way to utilise multiple quantum emitters confined in a single optical cavity. In such systems it is crucially important to control the quantum mechanical coupling of individual emitters to the cavity mode. In this regard, combining ion trap technologies with CQED provides a particularly promising approach due to the well-established motional control over trapped ions. Here we experimentally demonstrate coupling of up to five trapped ions in a string to a high-finesse optical cavity. By changing the axial posi…
The transmission of a probe field experiencing electromagnetically induced transparency and optical switching in an atomic medium enclosed in an optical cavity is investigated. Using a semiclassical input-output theory for the interaction between an ensemble of four-level atoms and three optical cavity fields coupled to the same spatial cavity mode, we derive the steady-state transmission spectra of the probe field and discuss the dynamics of the intracavity field buildup. The analytical and numerical results are in good agreement with recent experiments with ion Coulomb crystals [M. Albert et…
Single photon sources (SPS) based on semiconductor quantum dot (QD) platforms are restricted to low temperature (T) operation due to the presence of strong dephasing processes. Despite the integration of QD in optical cavities provides an enhancement of its emission properties, the technical requirements for maintaining high indistinguishability (I) at high T are beyond the state of the art. Recently, new theoretical approaches have shown promising results by implementing two-dipole-coupled-emitter systems. Here, we have developed a theory to estimate I in a two-emitter system with strong deph…
Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are a versatile tool for coherently interfacing with a variety of solid-state quantum systems spanning microwave to optical frequencies, including superconducting qubits, spins, and quantum emitters. Here, we demonstrate SAW cavity optomechanics with quantum emitters in 2D materials, specifically monolayer WSe$_2$, on a planar lithium niobate SAW resonator driven by superconducting electronics. Using steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopy and time-resolved single-photon counting, we map the temporal dynamics of modulated 2D emitters under coupling to differen…
The simplest model of a single-emitter laser generating in the regime of small number of photons in the cavity is theoretically investigated. Based on a system of equations for different moments of the field operators the analytical expressions for mean number of photons and its dispersion are obtained. Using the master equation approach the differential equation for the phase-averaged quasi-probability Q is derived. For some limiting cases the exact solutions of this equation are found.
We examine the dissipative dynamics of N00N states with an arbitrary photon number N in two architectures of fiber-coupled optical ring resonators (RRs) interacting with two-level quantum emitters. One architecture consists of a two-way cascaded array of emitter-cavity systems, while in the other architecture we consider two fiber-coupled RRs each coupled to multiple dipole-dipole interacting (DDI) quantum emitters (QEs). Our focus in this paper is to study how am initially prepared multiple excitation atomic N00N states transfers to the RRs and then how rapidly it decays in these open cavity …
Optically active defects in 2D materials, such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), are an attractive class of single-photon emitters with high brightness, room-temperature operation, site-specific engineering of emitter arrays, and tunability with external strain and electric fields. In this work, we demonstrate a novel approach to precisely align and embed hBN and TMDs within background-free silicon nitride microring resonators. Through the Purcell effect, high-purity hBN emitters exhibit a cavity-enhanced spectral coupling efficiency up to $46\%$ at …
Over the last decade, conditions for perfect state transfer in quantum spin chains have been discovered, and their experimental realizations addressed. In this paper, we consider an extension of such studies to quantum state transfer in a coupled cavity array including the effects of atoms in the cavities which can absorb and emit photons as they propagate down the array. Our model is equivalent to previously examined spin chains in the one-excitation sector and in the absence of emitters. We introduce a Monte Carlo approach to the inverse eigenvalue problem which allows the determination of t…
We report the observation of the vacuum Rabi splitting of a single quantum emitter by measuring its direct spontaneous emission into free space. We used a semiconductor quantum dot inside a photonic crystal nanocavity, in conjunction with an appropriate cavity design and filtering with a polarizer and an aperture, enabling the extraction of the inherently-weak emitter's signal. The emitter's vacuum Rabi spectra exhibit clear differences to those measured by detecting the cavity photon leakage. Moreover, we observed an asymmetric vacuum Rabi spectrum induced by interference between the emitter …
We study the temporal correlations of the field emitted by an electromagnetic resonator coupled to a mesoscopic number of two-level emitters that are incoherently pumped by a weak external drive. We solve the master equation of the system for increasing number of emitters and as a function of the cavity quality factor, and we identify three main regimes characterized by well distinguished statistical properties of the emitted radiation. For small cavity decay rate, the emission events are uncorrelated and the number of photons in the emitted field becomes larger than one, resembling the build-…
We investigate theoretically the generation of indistinguishable single photons from a strongly dissipative quantum system placed inside an optical cavity. The degree of indistinguishability of photons emitted by the cavity is calculated as a function of the emitter-cavity coupling strength and the cavity linewidth. For a quantum emitter subject to strong pure dephasing, our calculations reveal that an unconventional regime of high indistinguishability can be reached for moderate emittercavity coupling strengths and high quality factor cavities. In this regime, the broad spectrum of a dissipat…
We present an all-fiber emitter-cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system which consists of two two-level emitters and a nanofiber cavity. Our scheme makes it possible to observe the higher-order exceptional points based on the coupling between the emitters and the nanofiber cavity. The effective gain of this cavity can be obtained by weakly driven to the nanofiber cavity via two identical laser fields, which will realize coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in the implementation of the experiments. Under the experimental feasible parameters, the Hamiltonian of this system is in the condition o…
We study the controllable single-photon scattering via a one-dimensional waveguide which is coupled to a two-level emitter and a single-mode cavity simultaneously. The emitter and the cavity are also coupled to each other and form a three-level system with cyclic transitions within the zero- and single-excitation subspaces. As a result, the phase of emitter-cavity coupling strength serves as a sensitive control parameter. When the emitter and cavity locate at the same point of the waveguide, we demonstrate the Rabi splitting and quasidark-state--induced perfect transmission for the incident ph…
We propose an architecture for achieving high-fidelity deterministic quantum logic gates on dual-rail encoded photonic qubits by letting photons interact with a two-level emitter (TLE) inside an optical cavity. The photon wave packets that define the qubit are preserved after the interaction due to a quantum control process that actively loads and unloads the photons from the cavity and dynamically alters their effective coupling to the TLE. The controls rely on nonlinear wave mixing between cavity modes enhanced by strong externally modulated electromagnetic fields or on AC Stark shifts of th…
We theoretically investigate the emission properties of a single-mode cavity coupled to a mesoscopic number of incoherently pumped quantum emitters. We propose an operational measure for the medium cooperativity, valid both in the bad and in the good cavity regimes. We show that the opposite regimes of subradiance and superradiance correspond to negative and positive cooperativity, respectively. The lasing regime is shown to be characterized by nonnegative cooperativity. In the bad cavity regime we show that the cooperativity defines the transitions from subradiance to superradiance. In the go…
We study a disordered ensemble of quantum emitters collectively coupled to a lossless cavity mode. The latter is found to modify the localization properties of the "dark" eigenstates, which exhibit a character of being localized on multiple, noncontiguous sites. We denote such states as semi-localized and characterize them by means of standard localization measures. We show that those states can very efficiently contribute to coherent energy transport. Our paper underlines the important role of dark states in systems with strong light-matter coupling.
