Future information technology demands ultimately fast, low-loss quantum control. Intense light fields have facilitated important milestones, such as inducing novel states of matter, accelerating electrons ballistically, or coherently flipping the valley pseudospin. These dynamics leave unique signatures, such as characteristic bandgaps or high-order harmonic radiation. The fastest and least dissipative way of switching the technologically most important quantum attribute - the spin - between two states separated by a potential barrier is to trigger an all-coherent precession. Pioneering experiments and theory with picosecond electric and magnetic fields have suggested this possibility, yet observing the actual dynamics has remained out of reach. Here, we show that terahertz (1 THz = 10$^{12}$ Hz) electromagnetic pulses allow coherent navigation of spins over a potential barrier and we reveal the corresponding temporal and spectral fingerprints. This goal is achieved by coupling spins in antiferromagnetic TmFeO$_{3}$ with the locally enhanced THz electric field of custom-tailored antennas. Within their duration of 1 ps, the intense THz pulses abruptly change the magnetic anisotropy and trigger a large-amplitude ballistic spin motion. A characteristic phase flip, an asymmetric splitting of the magnon resonance, and a long-lived offset of the Faraday signal are hallmarks of coherent spin switching into adjacent potential minima, in agreement with a numerical simulation. The switchable spin states can be selected by an external magnetic bias. The low dissipation and the antenna's sub-wavelength spatial definition could facilitate scalable spin devices operating at THz rates.
We propose a novel ultrafast electronic switching device based on dual-graphene electron waveguides, in analogy to the optical dual-channel waveguide device. The design utilizes the principle of coherent quantum mechanical tunneling of Rabi oscillations between the two graphene electron waveguides. Based on a modified coupled mode theory, we construct a theoretical model to analyse the device characteristics, and predict that the swtiching speed is faster than 1 ps. Due to the long mean free path of electrons in graphene at room temperature, the proposed design avoids the limitation of low tem…
An outstanding goal in quantum optics is the realization of fast optical non-linearities at the single-photon level. Such non-linearities would allow for the realization of optical devices with new functionalities such as a single-photon switch/transistor or a controlled-phase gate, which could form the basis of future quantum optical technologies. While non-linear optics effects at the single-emitter level have been demonstrated in different systems, including atoms coupled to Fabry-Perot or toroidal micro-cavities, super-conducting qubits in strip-line resonators or quantum dots (QDs) in nan…
In spintronics, it is important to be able to manipulate magnetization rapidly and reliably. Several methods can control magnetization, such as by applying current pulses or magnetic fields. An applied current can reverse magnetization with nanosecond speed through the spin torque effect. For faster switching, subpicosecond switching with femtoseconds laser pulse has been achieved in amorphous rare-earth transition-metal ferrimagnets. In this study, we employed atomistic simulations to investigate ultrafast switching in a synthetic antiferromagnet with bilayer amorphous FeGd ferrimagnets. Usin…
We present a theoretical discovery of an unconventional mechanism of inverse Faraday effect (IFE) which acts selectively on topological magnetic structures. The effect, topological inverse Faraday effect (TIFE), is induced by spin Berry's phase of the magnetic structure when a circularly polarized light is applied. Thus a spin-orbit interaction is not necessary unlike in the conventional IFE. We demonstrate by numerical simulation that TIFE realizes ultrafast switching of a magnetic vortex within a switching time of 150 ps without magnetic field.
Based on numerical simulations, we demonstrate thermally induced magnetic switching in synthetic ferrimagnets composed of multilayers of rare-earth and transition metals. Our findings show that deterministic magnetization reversal occurs above a certain threshold temperature if the ratio of transition metal atoms to rare-earth atoms is sufficiently large. Surprisingly, the total thickness of the multilayer system has little effect on the occurence of switching. We further provide a simple argument to explain the temperature dependence of the reversal process.
Recently, a method of ultrafast polarization switching in ferroelectrics has been suggested. The basic idea of the method is to employ the effect of self-acceleration of polarization dynamics due to a resonator feedback field. This is the idea of principle whose efficiency is demonstrated by an Ising-type model in a transverse field. Of course, the practical realization of the method requires the choice of appropriate materials, which is a separate problem. For example, the standard order-disorder ferroelectrics with spatially symmetric double-well potentials cannot be used for this purpose, s…
Picosecond switching of the staggered antiferromagnetic order is shown to be realizable through spin-transfer torques from a short current pulse. The coupled dynamics of sublattice magnetization is mapped onto a classical pendulum subject to gravity and a driving pulse, where switching occurs if the pendulum acquires sufficient kinetic energy during the pulse to overcome the maximum of the effective gravity potential. The optimal switching scheme is explored through the dependence of switch angle and magnetic loss on the duration and strength of the current pulse. The physics discussed here pr…
In a number of recent experiments, it has been shown that femtosecond laser pulses can control magnetization on picosecond timescales, which is at least an order of magnitude faster compared to conventional magnetization dynamics. Among these demonstrations, one material system (GdFeCo ferromagnetic films) is particularly interesting, as deterministic toggle-switching of the magnetic order has been achieved without the need of any symmetry breaking magnetic field. This phenomenon is often referred to as all optical switching (AOS). However, so far, GdFeCo remains the only material system where…
Recently it has been shown that not only GdFeCo alloys exhibit single-pulse helicity-independent all-optical switching (HI-AOS), but that this effect is also seen in Co/Gd bilayers. However, there have been no reports on the explicit time dynamics of the switching process in these bilayers as of yet. Furthermore, time-resolved measurements of switching of other materials are typically done with a constant applied field to reset the magnetization between consecutive pulses and thus ensure repeatable behavior. In this paper we experimentally resolve the explicit dynamics of the switching process…
The ultimate control of magnetic states of matter at femtosecond (or even faster) timescales defines one of the most pursued paradigm shifts for future information technology. In this context, ultrafast laser pulses developed into extremely valuable stimuli for the all-optical magnetisation reversal in ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic alloys and multilayers, while this remains elusive in elementary ferromagnets. Here we demonstrate that a single laser pulse with sub-picosecond duration can lead to the reversal of the magnetisation of bulk nickel, in tandem with the expected demagnetisation. As …

Switching magnetization in a perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (pMTJ) via voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) has shown the potential to markedly reduce the switching energy. However, the requirement of an external magnetic field poses a critical bottleneck for its practical applications. In this work, we propose an elliptical-shaped pMTJ to eliminate the requirement of providing an external field by an additional circuit. We demonstrate that a 10 nm thick in-plane magnetized bias layer (BL) separated by a metallic spacer of 3 nm from the free layer (FL) can be engineered within…

The magnetic field associated with a picosecond intense electron pulse is shown to switch locally the magnetization of extended films and nanostructures and to ignite locally spin waves excitations. Also, topologically protected magnetic textures such as skyrmions can be imprinted swiftly in a sample with a residual Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin-orbital coupling. Characteristics of the created excitations such as the topological charge or the width of the magnon spectrum can be steered via the duration and the strength of the electron pulses. The study points to a possible way for a spatiotempora…
We study THz-driven spin dynamics in thin CoPt films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Femtosecond magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements show that demagnetization amplitude of about $1\%$ can be achieved with a peak THz electric field of $300$~kV/cm, and a corresponding peak magnetic field of $0.1$~T. The effect is more than an order of magnitude larger than observed in samples with easy-plane anisotropy irradiated with the same field strength. We also utilize finite-element simulations to design a meta-material structure that can enhance the THz magnetic field by more than an order o…
The switching speed and the write current required for spin-transfer-torque reversal of spintronic devices such as magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) currently hinder their wide implementation into memory and logic devices. This problem is further exacerbated as the dimensions of MTJ nanostructures are scaled down to tens of nanometers in diameter, as higher magnetic anisotropy materials are required to meet thermal stability requirements that demand higher switching current densities. Here, we propose a simple solution to these issues based on synthetic ferrimagnet (SFM) structures. It is common…
Electric control of magnetic vortex dynamics in a reproducible way and on an ultrafast time scale is key element in the quest for efficient spintronic devices with low-energy consumption. To be useful the control scheme should ideally be swift, scalable, non-invasive, and resulting in reliable magnetic switching. Such requirements and in particular the reproducibility of altering the vortex chirality and/or polarity are not yet met by magnetic vortex switching via external magnetic fields, spin-polarized currents, spin waves, or laser pulses. Here we demonstrate a novel packaged-skyrmion media…
Both helicity-independent and helicity-dependent all-optical switching processes driven by single ultrashort laser pulse have been experimentally demonstrated in ferrimagnetic alloys as GdFeCo. Although the switching has been previously reproduced by atomistic simulations, the lack of a robust micromagnetic framework for ferrimagnets limits the predictions to small nano-systems, whereas the experiments are usually performed with lasers and samples of tens of micrometers. Here we develop a micromagnetic model based on the extended Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation, which is firstly validated by di…
Spin-orbit torques induced by spin Hall and interfacial effects in heavy metal/ferromagnetic bilayers allow for a switching geometry based on in-plane current injection. Using this geometry, we demonstrate deterministic magnetization reversal by current pulses ranging from 180~ps to ms in Pt/Co/AlOx dots with lateral dimensions of 90~nm. We characterize the switching probability and critical current $I_c$ as function of pulse length, amplitude, and external field. Our data evidence two distinct regimes: a short-time intrinsic regime, where $I_c$ scales linearly with the inverse of the pulse le…
Spatially resolved measurements of quasi-ballistic precessional magnetic switching in a microstructure are presented. Crossing current wires allow detailed study of the precessional switching induced by coincident longitudinal and transverse magnetic field pulses. Though the response is initially spatially uniform, dephasing occurs leading to nonuniformity and transient demagnetization. This nonuniformity comes in spite of a novel method for suppression of end domains in remanence. The results have implications for the reliability of ballistic precessional switching in magnetic devices.
Spin-orbitronics and single pulse all-optical switching (AOS) of magnetization are two major successes of the rapidly advancing field of nanomagnetism in recent years, with high potential for enabling novel, fast and energy-efficient memory and logic platforms. Fast current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) and single shot AOS have been individually demonstrated in different ferrimagnetic alloys. However, the stringent requirement for their composition control makes these alloys challenging materials for wafer-scale production. Here, we simultaneously demonstrate fast CIDWM and energy efficie…
The quest to improve density, speed and energy efficiency of magnetic memory storage has led to exploration of new ways of optically manipulating magnetism at the ultrafast time scale, in particular in ferrimagnetic alloys. While all-optical magnetization switching is well-established on the femtosecond timescale, lateral nanoscale confinement and thus potential significant reduction of the size of the magnetic element remains an outstanding challenge. Here we employ resonant electromagnetic energy-funneling plasmon nanoantennas to influence the demagnetization dynamics of a ferrimagnetic TbCo…
The field of spintronics involves the study of both spin and charge transport in solid state devices with a view toward increasing their functionality and efficiency. Alternatively, the field of ultrafast magnetism focuses on the use of femtosecond laser pulses to excite electrons in magnetic materials, which allows the magnetic order to be dramatically changed on unprecedented sub-picosecond time-scales. Here, we unite these two distinct research activities by using picosecond electrical pulses to rapidly excite electrons in a magnetic metal. We are able to deterministically and repetitively …
Molecular spin crossover switches are the objects of intense theoretical and experimental studies in recent years. This interest is due to the fact that these systems allow one to control their spin state by applying an external photo-, thermo-, piezo-, or magnetic stimuli. The greatest amount of research is currently devoted to the study the effect of the photoexcitation on the bi-stable states of spin crossover single molecular magnets (SMMs). The main limitation of photo-induced bi-stable states is their short lifetime. In this paper we present the results of a study of the spin dynamics of…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial spin textures of potential interest for future information storage applications, and for such purposes, the control and understanding of single skyrmion creation is required. A scheme is analyzed to create single Néel-type and Bloch-type skyrmions in helimagnetic thin films utilizing the dynamical excitations induced by the Oersted field and the spin transfer torque given by a vertically injected spin-polarized current. A topological charge analysis using a lattice version of the topological charge provides insight into the locally triggered tra…
Nonlinear interactions in coherent gases are not only at the origin of of bright and dark solitons and superfluids. At the same time, they give rise to phenomena such as multistability, which hold great promise for the development of advanced photonic and spintronic devices. In particular, spinor multistability in strongly-coupled semiconductor microcavities shows that the spin of hundreds of exciton-polaritons can be coherently controlled, opening the route to spin-optronic devices such as ultrafast spin memories, gates or even neuronal communication schemes. Here, we demonstrate that switchi…
Many key electronic technologies (e.g., large-scale computing, machine learning, and superconducting electronics) require new memories that are fast, reliable, energy-efficient, and of low-impedance at the same time, which has remained a challenge. Non-volatile magnetoresistive random access memories (MRAMs) driven by spin-orbit torques (SOTs) have promise to be faster and more energy-efficient than conventional semiconductor and spin-transfer-torque magnetic memories. This work reports that the spin Hall effect of low-resistivity Au0.25Pt0.75 thin films enables ultrafast antidamping-torque sw…
The field-free spin-orbit torque induced 180° reorientation of perpendicular magnetization is beneficial for the high performance magnetic memory. The antiferromagnetic material (AFM) can provide higher operation speed than the ferromagnetic counterpart. In this paper, we propose a trilayer AFM/Insulator/Heavy Metal structure as the AFM memory device. We show that the field-free switching of the AFM with perpendicular Néel vector can be achieved by using two orthogonal currents, which provide the uniform damping-like torque and stagger field-like torque, respectively. The reversible switching …
Time-resolved pump-probe measurements show ultrafast and heat accumulation demagnetization in Co/Pd superlattices on glass substrates. A model of demagnetizing fields and micromagnetic simulations are applied to examine the evolution of a demagnetized cylinder into a switched state.
We present pump-probe measurements of an all-optical photonic crystal switch based on a nanocavity, resolving fast coherent temporal dynamics. The measurements demonstrate the importance of coherent effects typically neglected when considering nanocavity dynamics. In particular, we report the observation of an idler pulse. The measurements are in good agreement with a theoretical model that allows us to ascribe the observation to oscillations of the free carrier population in the nanocavity. The effect opens perspectives for the realization of new all-optical photonic crystal switches with unp…
We develop the theoretical framework of nonequilibrium ultrafast photonics in monolayer quantum spin-Hall insulators supporting a multitude of topological states. In these materials, ubiquitous strong light-matter interactions in the femtosecond scale lead to non-adiabatic quantum dynamics, resulting in topology-dependent nonlinear optoelectronic transport phenomena. We investigate the mechanism driving topological Dirac fermions interacting with strong ultrashort light pulses and uncover various experimentally accessible physical quantities that encode fingerprints of the quantum material's t…

Inspired by the recent discovery of intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnets, which provide unique platform to explore the new phenomenon for light-control magnetism in the 2D limit, we propose to realize light can efficiently tune magnetic properties of 2D ferrimagnets in early time. Here, using the 2D ferrimagnetic MXenes as prototype systems, our real-time density functional theory …

Reducing energy dissipation while increasing speed in computation and memory is a long-standing challenge for spintronics research. In the last 20 years, femtosecond lasers have emerged as a tool to control the magnetization in specific magnetic materials at the picosecond timescale. However, the use of ultrafast optics in integrated circuits and memories would require a major paradigm shift. An ultrafast electrical control of the magnetization is far preferable for integrated systems. Here we demonstrate reliable and deterministic control of the out-of-plane magnetization of a 1 nm-thick Co l…
The discovery of current-induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) orthogonal reorientation, also known as orthogonal switching, of metallic Mn$_2$Au and CuMnAs has opened the door for ultrafast writing of an antiferromagnet (AFM). Phenomenological theory predicts that the minimum field necessary for SOT switching -- critical field -- for ultrashort pulses increases inversely proportional to the pulse duration, thereby limiting the use of ultrafast stimulus as driving force for switching. We explore the possibility that by varying the working temperature the critical field reduces enabling orthogonal sw…
Detailed understanding of spin dynamics in magnetic nanomaterials is necessary for developing ultrafast, low-energy and high-density spintronic logic and memory. Here, we develop micromagnetic models and analytical solutions to elucidate the effect of increasing damping and uniaxial anisotropy on magnetic field pulse-assisted switching time, energy and field requirements of nanowires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and yttrium iron garnet-like spin transport properties. A nanowire is initially magnetized using an external magnetic field pulse (write) and self-relaxation. Next, magnetic …
All-optical magnetic switching promises ultrafast, high-resolution magnetisation control with the technological attraction of requiring no magnetic field. Existing all-optical switching schemes are driven by ultrafast transient effects, typically requiring power-hungry femtosecond-pulsed lasers and complex magnetic materials. Here, we demonstrate deterministic, all-optical magnetic switching in simple ferromagnetic nanomagnets (Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$, Ni$_{50}$Fe$_{50}$) with sub-diffraction limit dimensions using a focused low-power, linearly-polarised continuous-wave laser. Isolated nanomagnets …
The functionality of logic and memory elements in current electronics is based on multi-stability, driven either by manipulating local concentrations of electrons in transistors, or by switching between equivalent states of a material with a degener- ate ground state in magnetic or ferroelectric materials. Another possibility is offered by phase transitions with switching between metallic and insulating phases, but classical phase transitions are limited in speed by slow nucleation, proliferation of domains and hysteresis. We can in principle avoid these problems by using quantum states for sw…
The interaction of polarized light with a spin in the presence of dissipation is shown to be equivalent to a spin transfer process that can cause switching. In plasmas, the spin transfer is dominated by a spin-spin exchange term while at lower energy densities it is dominated by an optical Barnett-like effect. This latter effect is used in conjunction with optical phonons to predict femtosecond magnetization reversal believed to be recently measured in GdCoFe thin films. Conventional approaches based on the Bloch and the Landau-Lifshitz equations do not reproduce this ultrafast switching.
