The calculating of the coherent information is a fundamental step in obtaining the quantum capacity of a quantum channel. We introduce orthogonal and complete code basis to evaluate the coherent information per channel use when the input is the maximal mixture of stabilizer codewords. In the code basis, the output density matrix is diagonal, the joint output of the system and the auxiliary is block diagonal. The coherent information is worked out by counting the weights of error operators.
We investigate the advantage of coherent superposition of two different coded channels in quantum metrology. In a continuous variable system, we show that the Heisenberg limit $1/N$ can be beaten by the coherent superposition without the help of indefinite causal order. And in parameter estimation, we demonstrate that the strategy with the coherent superposition can perform better than the strategy with quantum \textsc{switch} which can generate indefinite causal order. We analytically obtain the general form of estimation precision in terms of the quantum Fisher information and further prove …
Coherent noise can be much more damaging than incoherent (probabilistic) noise in the context of quantum error correction. One solution is to use twirling to turn coherent noise into incoherent Pauli channels. In this Article, we show that some of the coherence of the noise channel can actually be used to improve its logical fidelity by simply sandwiching the noise with a chosen pair of Pauli gates, which we call Pauli conjugation. Using the optimal Pauli conjugation, we can achieve a higher logical fidelity than using twirling and doing nothing. We devise a way to search for the optimal Pauli…
Analysis of quantum error correcting codes is typically done using a stochastic, Pauli channel error model for describing the noise on physical qubits. However, it was recently found that coherent errors (systematic rotations) on physical data qubits result in both physical and logical error rates that differ significantly from those predicted by a Pauli model. Here we examine the accuracy of the Pauli approximation for coherent errors on data qubits under the repetition code. We analytically evaluate the logical error as a function of concatenation level and code distance. We find that cohere…
Quantum error mitigation (QEM) is a promising technique of protecting hybrid quantum-classical computation from decoherence, but it suffers from sampling overhead which erodes the computational speed. In this treatise, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the sampling overhead imposed by QEM. In particular, we show that Pauli errors incur the lowest sampling overhead among a large class of realistic quantum channels having the same average fidelity. Furthermore, we show that depolarizing errors incur the lowest sampling overhead among all kinds of Pauli errors. Additionally, we conceive a sc…
We introduce graph state basis diagonalization to calculate the coherent information of a quantum code passing through a Pauli channel. The scheme is 5000 times faster than the best known one for some concatenated repetition codes, providing us a practical constructive way of approaching the quantum capacity of a Pauli channel. The calculation of the coherent information of non-additive quantum code can also be greatly simplified in graph state basis.
Coherent quantum control over many-particle quantum systems requires high fidelity dynamics. One way of achieving this is to use adiabatic schemes where the system follows an instantaneous eigenstate of the Hamiltonian over timescales that do not allow transitions to other states. This, however, makes control dynamics very slow. Here we introduce another concept that takes advantage of preventing unwanted transitions in fermionic systems by using Pauli blocking: excitations from a protected ground state to higher-lying states are avoided by adding a layer of buffer fermions, such that the prot…
A general error correction method is presented which is capable of correcting coherent errors originating from static residual inter-qubit couplings in a quantum computer. It is based on a randomization of static imperfections in a many-qubit system by the repeated application of Pauli operators which change the computational basis. This Pauli-Random-Error-Correction (PAREC)-method eliminates coherent errors produced by static imperfections and increases significantly the maximum time over which realistic quantum computations can be performed reliably. Furthermore, it does not require redundan…
The quantum nature of elementary bosons can be completely erased by using coherent states known as Glauber states. Here, we consider composite bosons (cobosons) made of two fermions and look for the possibility to erase the bosonic quantum nature of the field and the fermionic quantum nature of its constituents, when the distribution of the coboson Schmidt decomposition is either flat like Frenkel excitons, or localized like Wannier excitons. We show that for Frenkel-like cobosons, complete erasure of the field quantum nature is possible up to a density which corresponds to a sizable fraction …
In this paper we investigate stabilizer quantum error correction codes using controlled phase rotations of strong coherent probe states. We explicitly describe two methods to measure the Pauli operators which generate the stabilizer group of a quantum code. First, we show how to measure a Pauli operator acting on physical qubits using a single coherent state with large average photon number, displacement operations, and photon detection. Second, we show how to measure the stabilizer operators fault-tolerantly by the deterministic preparation of coherent cat states along with one-bit teleportat…

We examine different methods to implement coherent detection in the subcarrier wave quantum key distribution (SCW QKD) systems. For classical wavefields, we present the models describing homodyne-type and heterodyne-type coherent detection schemes needed to extract information from the quadrature phase-coded multimode signals used in SCW QKD. Practical feasibility of the proposed schemes is corroborated by the experiments.
Machine learning techniques are increasingly being used in fundamental research to solve various challenging problems. Here we explore one such technique to address an important problem in quantum communication scenario. While transferring quantum information through a noisy quantum channel, the utility of the channel is characterized by its quantum capacity. Quantum channels, however, display an intriguing property called super-additivity of coherent information. This makes the calculation of quantum capacity a hard computational problem involving optimization over an exponentially increasing…
Randomized benchmarking is a powerful technique to efficiently estimate the performance and reliability of quantum gates, circuits and devices. Here we propose to perform randomized benchmarking in a coherent way, where superpositions of different random sequences rather than independent samples are used. We show that this leads to a uniform and simple protocol with significant advantages with respect to gates that can be benchmarked, and in terms of efficiency and scalability. We show that e.g. universal gate sets, the set of $n-$qudit Pauli operators or more general sets including arbitrary …
Randomized compiling reduces the effects of errors on quantum computers by tailoring arbitrary Markovian errors into stochastic Pauli noise. Here we prove that randomized compiling also tailors non-Markovian errors into local stochastic Pauli noise and investigate the technique's limitations. We show through analysis and numerical results that randomized compiling alters errors in three distinct helpful ways. First, it prevents the coherent accumulation of errors (including hard to remove crosstalk effects) across gate cycles by destroying intercycle coherent correlations. Second, it converts …

High approximations of semiclassical trajectory-coherent states (TCS) and of semiclassical Green function (in the class of semiclassically concentrated states) for the Dirac operator with anomalous Pauli interaction are obtained. For Schrodinger and Dirac operators trajectory-coherent representations are constructed up to any precision with respect to h, h-->0.
Through concurrence, we characterize the entanglement properties of optical coherent-state qubits subject to an amplitude damping channel. We investigate the distillation capabilities of known error correcting codes and obtain upper bounds on the entanglement depending on the non-orthogonality of the coherent states and the channel damping parameter. This work provides a first, full quantitative analysis of these photon-loss codes which are naturally reminiscent of the standard qubit codes against Pauli errors.

Typical studies of quantum error correction assume probabilistic Pauli noise, largely because it is relatively easy to analyze and simulate. Consequently, the effective logical noise due to physically realistic coherent errors is relatively unknown. Here, we prove that encoding a system in a stabilizer code and measuring error syndromes decoheres errors, that is, causes coherent errors to converge toward probabilistic Pauli errors, even when no recovery operations are applied. Two practical consequences are that the error rate in a logical circuit is well quantified by the average gate fidelit…

In this paper we present finite-key security analysis for quantum key distribution protocol based on weak coherent (in particular phase-coded) states using a fully quantum asymptotic equipartition property technique. This work is the extension of the proof for non-orthogonal states on the coherent states. Below we consider two types of attacks each of them maximizes either Alice-Eve or Eve-Bob mutual information. The cornerstone of this paper is that we do assume the possibility of crucial intercept-resend attack based on errorless unambiguous state discrimination measurement. We demonstrate t…
Coherent states, known as displaced vacuum states, play an important role in quantum information processing, quantum machine learning, and quantum optics. In this article, two ways to digitally prepare coherent states in quantum circuits are introduced. First, we construct the displacement operator by decomposing it into Pauli matrices via ladder operators, i.e., creation and annihilation operators. The high fidelity of the digitally generated coherent states is verified compared with the Poissonian distribution in Fock space. Secondly, by using Variational Quantum Algorithms, we choose differe…
We review and compare Bell-state measurement and quantum teleportation schemes using linear optics with three different types of resources, i.e., two-photon pairs, entangled coherent states and hybrid entangled states. Remarkably, perfect teleportation with linear optics is possible in principle based on a hybrid approach that combines two-photon pairs and entangled coherent states. It turns out that hybrid approach allows to perform Bell-state measurement and local Pauli operations in a deterministic way, while it requires photon number resolving measurements.

We study how well topological quantum codes can tolerate coherent noise caused by systematic unitary errors such as unwanted $Z$-rotations. Our main result is an efficient algorithm for simulating quantum error correction protocols based on the 2D surface code in the presence of coherent errors. The algorithm has runtime $O(n^2)$, where $n$ is the number of physical qubits. It allows us to simulate systems with more than one thousand qubits and obtain the first error threshold estimates for several toy models of coherent noise. Numerical results are reported for storage of logical states subje…
The error threshold of a one-parameter family of quantum channels is defined as the largest noise level such that the quantum capacity of the channel remains positive. This in turn guarantees the existence of a quantum error correction code for noise modeled by that channel. Discretizing the single-qubit errors leads to the important family of Pauli quantum channels; curiously, multipartite entangled states can increase the threshold of these channels beyond the so-called hashing bound, an effect termed superadditivity of coherent information. In this work, we divide the simplex of Pauli chann…

Evaluating the quantum capacity of quantum channels is an important but difficult problem, even for channels of low input and output dimension. Smith and Smolin showed that the quantum capacity of the Clifford-twirl of a qubit amplitude damping channel (a qubit depolarizing channel) has a quantum capacity that is at most the coherent information of the qubit amplitude damping channel evaluated on the maximally mixed input state. We restrict our attention to obtaining upper bounds on the quantum capacity using a generalization of Smith and Smolin's degradable extension technique. Given a degrad…

The realistic coherent errors could induce very different behaviors compared with their stochastic counterparts in the quantum error correction (QEC) and fault tolerant quantum computation. Their impacts are believed to be very subtle, more detrimental and hard to analyze compared to those ideal stochastic errors. In this paper, we study the independent coherent error due to the imperfect unitary rotation on each physical qubit of the toric code. We find that the surface code under coherent error satisfies generalized Knill-Laflamme (K-L) criterion and falls into the category of approximate QE…
Coherent errors are a dominant noise process in many quantum computing architectures. Unlike stochastic errors, these errors can combine constructively and grow into highly detrimental overrotations. To combat this, we introduce a simple technique for suppressing systematic coherent errors in low-density parity-check (LDPC) stabilizer codes, which we call stabilizer slicing. The essential idea is to slice low-weight stabilizers into two equally-weighted Pauli operators and then apply them by rotating in opposite directions, causing their overrotations to interfere destructively on the logical …
We present a method that outputs a sequence of simple unitary operations to prepare a given quantum state that is a generalized coherent state. Our method takes as inputs the expectation values of some relevant observables on the state to be prepared. Such expectation values can be estimated by performing projective measurements on $O(M^3 \log(M/δ)/ε^2)$ copies of the state, where $M$ is the dimension of an associated Lie algebra, $ε$ is a precision parameter, and $1-δ$ is the required confidence level. The method can be implemented on a classical computer and runs in time $O(M^4 \log(M/ε))$. …
