We have studied the transmission of an optically thick Rb vapor that is illuminated by monochromatic and noise broaden laser fields in Lambda configuration. The spectral width of the beat signal between the two fields after transmission through the atomic medium is more than 1000 times narrower than the spectral width of this signal before the medium.
Electrically controllable quantum coherence in quantum dot clusters and arrays based on graphene stripes with zigzag atomic edges (ZZ-stripes) is studied using the Dirac equation and S-matrix technique. We find that respective multiqubit circuits promise stable operation up to room temperatures when the coherence time is prolonged up by a few orders of magnitude through the intrinsic spectral narrowing owing to electron transport between at bands in adjacent sections. Respectively, the coupling of qubits to a noisy environment is diminished, while the inelastic electron-phonon scattering is su…
Controlling and narrowing x-ray frequency spectra in magnetically perturbed two-target nuclear forward scattering is theoretically studied. We show that different hard-x-ray spectral redistributions can be achieved by single or multiple switching of magnetic field in nuclear targets. Our scheme can generate x-ray spectral lines with tenfold intensity enhancement and spectral width narrower than four times the nuclear natural linewidth. The present results pave the way towards a brighter and flexible x-ray source for precision spectroscopy of nuclear resonances using modern synchrotron radiatio…
We show that cavity-induced interference may result in spectral line narrowing in the absorption spectrum of a $Ξ$-type atom coupled to a single-mode, frequency-tunable cavity field with a pre-selected polarization at finite temperature.
Dicke narrowing is a phenomena that dramatically reduces the Doppler width of spectral lines, due to frequent velocity-changing collisions. A similar phenomena occurs for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances, and facilitates ultra-narrow spectral features in room-temperature vapor. We directly measure the Dicke-like narrowing by studying EIT line-shapes as a function of the angle between the pump and the probe beams. The measurements are in good agreement with an analytic theory with no fit parameters. The results show that Dicke narrowing can increase substantially the to…
We present a measurement scheme capable of achieving the quantum limit of parameter estimation using an adaptive strategy that minimizes the parameter's variance at each step. The adaptive rule we propose makes the scheme robust against errors, in particular imperfect readouts, a critical requirement to extend adaptive schemes from quantum optics to solid-state sensors. Thanks to recent advances in single-shot readout capabilities for electronic spins in the solid state (such as Nitrogen Vacancy centers in diamond), this scheme can be as well applied to estimate the polarization of a spin bath…
More than 4 orders of magnitude of cavity-linewidth narrowing in a rare-earth-ion-doped crystal cavity, emanating from strong intracavity dispersion caused by off-resonant interaction with dopant ions, is demonstrated. The dispersion profiles are engineered using optical pumping techniques creating significant semipermanent but reprogrammable changes of the rare-earth absorption profiles. Several cavity modes are shown within the spectral transmission window. Several possible applications of this phenomenon are discussed.
We investigate theoretically the phenomenon of exchange narrowing in the absorption spectrum of a chain of monomers, which are coupled via resonant dipole-dipole interaction. The individual (uncoupled) monomers exhibit a broad absorption line shape due to the coupling to an environment consisting of a continuum of vibrational modes. Upon increasing the interaction between the monomers, the absorption spectrum of the chain narrows. For a non-Markovian environment with a Lorentzian spectral density, we find a narrowing of the peak width (full width at half maximum (FWHM)) by a factor 1/N, where …
Doppler broadening in thermal ensembles degrades the absorption cross-section and the coherence time of collective excitations. In two photon transitions, it is common to assume that this problem becomes worse with larger wavelength mismatch. Here we identify an opposite mechanism, where such wavelength mismatch leads to cancellation of Doppler broadening via the counteracting effects of velocity-dependent light-shifts and Doppler shifts. We show that this effect is general, common to both absorption and transparency resonances, and favorably scales with wavelength mismatch. We experimentally …
We theoretically analyze the experimental observations of a spectral line collapse in a metamaterial array of asymmetric split ring resonators [Fedotov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 223901 (2010)]. We show that the ensemble of closely-spaced resonators exhibits cooperative response, explaining the observed system-size dependent narrowing of the transmission resonance linewidth. We further show that this cooperative narrowing depends sensitively on the lattice spacing and that significantly stronger narrowing could be achieved in media with suppressed ohmic losses.

Using the model of parametric interaction based on the spatio-spectral Schmidt modes and generalized parametric approximation, we analyze coherence and mode structure of ultra-intense twin beams generated in the regime with pump depletion. We show that the increase of spatial and spectral coherence with the increasing pump power observed for moderate powers is replaced by the decrease for the pump powers at which pump depletion occurs. This behavior of coherence is opposed to that exhibited by the number of spatio-spectral modes effectively constituting the twin beam. The conditions for maxima…
It is well known that the reduced state of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state is a thermal state---i.e. a state whose photon-number statistics obey a geometric distribution. More exotic \emph{broadband} states can be realized as the reduced state of two spectrally-entangled beams generated using nonlinear optics. We show that these broadband "pseudothermal" states are tensor products of states in spectral Schmidt modes, whose photon-number statistics obey a geometric distribution. We study the spectral and temporal coherence properties of these states and show that their spectral coherence can b…
Spatio-spectral properties of twin beams at their transition from low to high intensities are analyzed in parametric and paraxial approximations using the decomposition into paired spatial and spectral modes. Intensity auto- and cross-correlation functions are determined and compared in the spectral and temporal domains as well as the transverse wave-vector and crystal output planes. Whereas the spectral, temporal and transverse wave-vector coherence increases with the increasing pump intensity, coherence in the crystal output plane is practically independent on the pump intensity owing to the…
We study the crucial role played by the solid-state environment in determining the photon emission characteristics of a driven quantum dot. For resonant driving, we predict a phonon-enhancement of the coherently emitted radiation field with increasing driving strength, in stark contrast to the conventional expectation of a rapidly decreasing fraction of coherent emission with stronger driving. This surprising behaviour results from thermalisation of the dot with respect to the phonon bath, and leads to a nonstandard regime of resonance fluorescence in which significant coherent scattering and …
Nitrogen-vacancy centres (NVs) in diamond are attractive for research straddling quantum information science and nanoscale magnetometry and thermometry. While ultrapure bulk diamond NVs sustain the longest spin coherence times among optically accessible spins, nanodiamond NVs display persistently poor spin coherence. Here we introduce high-purity nanodiamonds accommodating record-long NV coherence times, >60 us, observed via universal dynamical decoupling. We show that the main contribution to decoherence comes from nearby nitrogen impurities rather than surface states. We protect the NV spin …
We consider metamolecule consisting of bosonic mode correlated with the two-level system: it can be, for example, plasmonic mode interacting with the quantum dot. We focus on the parameter range where all the correlations are strong and of the same order: interaction between bosonic mode correlated with the two-level system, external coherent drive and dissipation. Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations show a fluorescence of this system at dissipation larger than the driving amplitude and strong (by the order of magnitude) narrowing of its spectral line. This effect may be related to kind of a quant…
Properties of weak spatio-spectral twin beams in paraxial approximation are analyzed using the decomposition into appropriate paired modes. Numbers of paired modes as well as numbers of modes in the signal (or idler) field in the transverse wave-vector and spectral domains are analyzed as functions of pump-beam parameters. Spatial and spectral coherence of weak twin beams is described by auto- and cross-correlation functions. Relation between the numbers of modes and coherence is discussed.
We consider the interaction of a two-level atom inside an optical parametric oscillator. In the weak driving field limit, we essentially have an atom-cavity system driven by the occasional pair of correlated photons, or weakly squeezed light. We find that we may have holes, or dips, in the spectrum of the fluorescent and transmitted light. This occurs even in the strong-coupling limit when we find holes in the vacuum-Rabi doublet. Also, spectra with a sub-natural linewidth may occur. These effects disappear for larger driving fields, unlike the spectral narrowing obtained in resonance fluoresc…
Light propagation in distributed feedback optical structures with gain/loss regions is shown to provide an accessible laboratory tool to visualize in optics the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Dirac equation with non-Hermitian interactions. Spectral singularities and PT symmetry breaking of the Dirac Hamiltonian are shown to correspond to simple observable physical quantities and related to well-known physical phenomena like resonance narrowing and laser oscillation.
Wiener-Khinchin theorem, the fact that the autocorrelation function of a time process has a spectral decomposition given by its power spectrum intensity, can be used in many disciplines. However, the applications based on a quantum counterpart of Wiener-Khinchin theorem that provides a translation between time-energy degrees of freedom of biphoton wavefunction still remains relatively unexplored. Here, we use a quantum Wiener-Khinchin theorem (QWKT) to state that two-photon joint spectral intensity and the cross-correlation of two-photon temporal signal can be connected by making a Fourier tra…
Modern quantum technologies rely crucially on techniques to mitigate quantum decoherence; these techniques can be either passive, achieved for example via materials engineering, or active, typically achieved via pulsed monochromatic driving fields applied to the qubit. Using a solid-state defect spin coupled to a microwave-driven spin bath, we experimentally demonstrate a decoherence mitigation method based on spectral engineering of the environmental noise with a polychromatic drive waveform, and show that it outperforms monochromatic techniques. Results are in agreement with quantitative mod…
We investigate the spontaneous emission from an inverted Y-type atomic system coupled by three coherent fields. We use the Schrödinger equation to calculate the probability amplitudes of the wave function of the system and derive an analytical expression of the spontaneous emission spectrum to trace the origin of the spectral features. Quantum interference effects, such as the spectral line narrowing, spectrum splitting and dark resonance are observed. The number of spectral components, the spectral linewidth, and relative heights can be very different depending on the physical parameters. A v…
We investigate the long-lived quantum coherence of two-level spontaneous emission models within structured environments. The population of the system under the asymptotic non-Markovian dynamics is linked to the spectral density of the reservoir through a general functional relation between them. We figure out explicitly the preservation of quantum coherence, via notions of entanglement and quantum discord, in connection with the spectral parameters of Ohmic class reservoirs and then show how to achieve them optimally. We expect these results to contribute towards reservoir engineering with the…

Characterizing and understanding noise affecting quantum states has immense benefits in spectroscopy as well as in realizing quantum devices. Transverse relaxation times under a set of dynamical decoupling (DD) sequences with varying interpulse delays were earlier used for obtaining the noise spectral densities of single-qubit coherences. In this work, using a pair of homonuclear spins and NMR techniques, we experimentally characterize noise in certain decoherence-free subspaces. We also explore the noise of similar states in a heteronuclear spin pair. Further, using a 10-qubit system, we inve…
We present an experiment demonstrating high-resolution coherent control of a four-level atomic system in a closed (diamond) type configuration. A femtosecond frequency comb is used to establish phase coherence between a pair of two-photon transitions in cold Rb atoms. By controlling the spectral phase of the frequency comb we demonstrate the optical phase sensitive response of the diamond system. The high-resolution state selectivity of the comb is used to demonstrate the importance of the signs of dipole moment matrix elements in this type of closed-loop excitation. Finally, the pulse shape i…
We propose a method for tailoring the frequency spectrum of bright squeezed vacuum by generating it in a nonlinear interferometer, consisting of two down-converting nonlinear crystals separated by a dispersive medium. Due to a faster dispersive spreading of higher-order Schmidt modes, the spectral width of the radiation at the output is reduced as the length of the dispersive medium is increased. Preliminary results show 30\% spectral narrowing.
X-ray four-wave mixing signals generated in the $k_1 + k_2 - k_3$ phase-matching direction are simulated for N1s transitions in para-nitroanline and two-ring hydrocarbons disubstituted with an amine and a nitroso groups. The two-dimensional x-ray correlation spectra (2DXCS) provide background-free probes of couplings between core-electron transitions even for multiple core shells of the same type. Features attributed to couplings between spatially-separated core transitions connected by delocalized valence excitations provide information about molecular geometry and electronic structure unavai…
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a 3D imaging technique that was introduced in 1991 [Science 254, 1178 (1991); Applied Optics 31, 919 (1992)]. Since 2018 there has been growing interest in a new type of OCT scheme based on the use of so-called nonlinear interferometers, interferometers that contain optical parametric amplifiers. Some of these OCT schemes are based on the idea of induced coherence [Physical Review A 97, 023824 (2018)], while others make use of an SU(1,1) interferometer [Quantum Science and Technology 3 025008 (2018)]. What are the differences and similarities between the o…
We show experimentally and theoretically that the spectral components of a multi-octave frequency comb spontaneously created by stimulated Raman scattering in a hydrogen-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber exhibit strong self coherence and mutual coherence within each 12 ns driving laser pulse. This coherence arises in spite of the field's initiation being from quantum zero-point fluctuations, which causes each spectral component to show large phase and energy fluctuations. This points to the possibility of an optical frequency comb with nonclassical correlations between all comb lines.
Twin-beam coherence properties are analyzed both in the spatial and spectral domains at high-gain regime including pump depletion. The increase of the size of intensity auto- and cross-correlation areas at increasing pump power is replaced by a decrease in the pump depletion regime. This effect is interpreted as a progressive loss in the mode selection occurring at high-gain amplification. The experimental determination of the number of spatio-spectral modes from $g^{(2)} $-function measurements confirms this explanation.
We propose a model for spectral diffusion of localized spins in semiconductors due to the dipolar fluctuations of lattice nuclear spins. Each nuclear spin flip-flop is assumed to be independent, the rate for this process being calculated by a method of moments. Our calculated spin decoherence time $T_{M}=0.64$ ms for donor electron spins in Si:P is a factor of two longer than spin echo decay measurements. For $^{31}$P nuclear spins we show that spectral diffusion is well into the motional narrowing regime. The calculation for GaAs quantum dots gives $T_{M}=10-50$ $μ$s depending on the quantum …
The measured multi-dimensional spectral response of different light harvesting complexes exhibits oscillatory features which suggest an underlying coherent energy transfer. However, making this inference rigorous is challenging due to the difficulty of isolating excited state coherences in highly congested spectra. In this work, we provide a coherent control scheme that suppresses ground state coherences, thus making rephasing spectra dominated by excited state coherences. We provide a benchmark for the scheme using a model dimeric system and numerically exact methods to analyze the spectral r…
We describe features that could be observed in the line spectra of relic cosmological particles should quantum nonequilibrium be preserved in their statistics. According to our arguments, these features would represent a significant departure from those of a conventional origin. Among other features, we find a possible spectral broadening that is proportional to the energy resolution of the recording telescope (and so could be much larger than any conventional broadening). Notably, for a range of possible initial conditions we find the possibility of spectral line "narrowing", whereby a telesc…

We report an optical homogeneous linewidth of 580 $\pm$ 20 Hz of Er$^{3+}$:Y$_2$O$_3$ ceramics at millikelvin temperatures, narrowest so far in rare-earth doped ceramics. We show slow spectral diffusion of $\sim$2 kHz over a millisecond time scale. Temperature, field dependence of optical coherence and spectral diffusions reveal the remaining dephasing mechanism as elastic two-level systems in polycrystalline grain boundaries and superhyperfine interactions of Er$^{3+}$ with nuclear spins. In addition, we perform spectral holeburning and measure up to 5 s hole lifetimes. These spectroscopic re…
The observed prevalence of oscillatory signals in the spectroscopy of biological light-harvesting complexes at ambient temperatures has led to a search for mechanisms supporting coherent transport through larger molecules in noisy environments. We demonstrate a generic mechanism supporting long-lasting electronic coherence up to 0.3 ps at a temperature of 277 K. The mechanism relies on two properties of the spectral density: (i) a large dissipative coupling to a continuum of higher-frequency vibrations required for efficient transport and (ii) a small slope of the spectral density at zero freq…
We show that certain coherences, termed as heat-exchange coherences, which contribute to the thermalization process of a quantum probe in a repeated interactions scheme, can modify the spectral response of the probe system. We suggest to use the power spectrum as a way to experimentally assess the apparent temperature of non-thermal atomic clusters carrying such coherences and also prove that it is useful to measure the corresponding thermalization time of the probe, assuming some information is provided on the nature of the bath. We explore this idea in two examples in which the probe is assu…
