We present an experiment demonstrating high-resolution coherent control of a four-level atomic system in a closed (diamond) type configuration. A femtosecond frequency comb is used to establish phase coherence between a pair of two-photon transitions in cold Rb atoms. By controlling the spectral phase of the frequency comb we demonstrate the optical phase sensitive response of the diamond system. The high-resolution state selectivity of the comb is used to demonstrate the importance of the signs of dipole moment matrix elements in this type of closed-loop excitation. Finally, the pulse shape is optimized resulting in a 256% increase in the two-photon transition rate by forcing constructive interference between the mode pairs detuned from an intermediate resonance.
Quantum computing exploits the quantum-mechanical nature of matter to exist in multiple possible states simultaneously. This new approach promises to revolutionize the present form of computing. As an approach to quantum computing, we discuss ultrafast laser pulse shaping, in particular, the acousto-optic modulator based Fourier-Transform pulse-shaper, which has the ability to modulate tunable high power ultrafast laser pulses. We show that optical pulse shaping is an attractive route to quantum computing since shaped pulses can be transmitted over optical hardware and the same infrastructure …
The ability to engineer the properties of quantum optical states is essential for quantum information processing applications. Here, we demonstrate tunable control of spatial correlations between photon pairs produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. By shaping the spatial pump beam profile in a type-I collinear configuration, we tailor the spatial structure of coincidences between photon pairs entangled in high dimensions, without effect on intensity. The results highlight fundamental aspects of spatial coherence and hold potential for the development of quantum technologies based o…
Light shaping facilitates the preparation and detection of optical states and underlies many applications in communications, computing, and imaging. In this Letter, we generalize light shaping to the quantum domain. We show that patterns of phase modulation for classical laser light can also shape higher orders of spatial coherence, allowing deterministic tailoring of high-dimensional quantum entanglement. By modulating spatially entangled photon pairs, we create periodic, topological, and random patterns of quantum illumination, without effect on intensity. We then structure the quantum illum…
We present a detailed analysis of the multimode quantum state embedded in an optical frequency comb generated by a Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator (SPOPO). The full covariance matrix of the state is obtained with homodyne detection where the local oscillator is spectrally controlled with pulse shaping techniques. The resulting matrix reveals genuine multipartite entanglement. Additionally, the beam is comprised of several independent eigenmodes that correspond to specific pulse shapes. The experimental data is confirmed with numerical simulations. Finally, the potential to c…
Quantum mechanical phenomena, such as electronic coherence and entanglement, play a key role in achieving the unrivalled efficiencies of light-energy conversion in natural photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes, and triggered the growing interest in the possibility of organic quantum computing. Since biological systems are intrinsically heterogeneous, clear relations between structural and quantum-mechanical properties can only be obtained by investigating individual assemblies. However, single-molecule techniques to access ultrafast coherences at physiological conditions were not available…
We report two schemes to generate perfect anisotropy in the photoelectron angular distribution of a randomly oriented ensemble of polyatomic molecules. In order to exert full control over the anisotropy of photoelectron emission, we exploit interferences between single-photon pathways and a manifold of resonantly-enhanced two-photon pathways. These are shown to outperform non-sequential $(ω,2ω)$ bichromatic phase control for the example of CHFClBr molecules. We are able to optimize pulses that yield anisotropic photoelectron emission thanks to a very efficient calculation of photoelectron mome…
Controlling the wave function of free electrons is important to improve the spatial resolution of electron microscopes, the efficiency of electron interaction with sample modes of interest, and our ability to probe ultrafast materials dynamics at the nanoscale. In this context, attosecond electron compression has been recently demonstrated through interaction with the near fields created by scattering of ultrashort laser pulses at nanostructures followed by free electron propagation. Here, we show that control over electron pulse shaping, compression, and statistics can be improved by replacin…
Uniting Quantum Processing Nodes of Cavity-coupled Ions with Rare-earth Quantum Repeaters Using Single-photon Pulse Shaping Based on Atomic Frequency Comb
Multimode entanglement is quintessential for the design and fabrication of quantum networks, which play a central role in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. However, an experimental setup is generally constructed with a specific network configuration in mind and therefore exhibits reduced versatility and scalability. The present work demonstrates an on-demand, reconfigurable quantum network simulator, using an intrinsically multimode quantum resource and a homodyne detection apparatus. Without altering either the initial squeezing source or experimen- tal architecture, we re…
It is shown that quantum-type coherence, leading to indeterminism and interference of probabilities, may in principle exist in the absence of the Planck constant and a Hamiltonian. Such coherence is a combined effect of a symmetry (not necessary physical) and semantics. The crucial condition is that symmetries should apply to logical statements about observables. A theoretical example of a non-quantum system with quantum-type properties is analysed.
We show experimentally and theoretically that the spectral components of a multi-octave frequency comb spontaneously created by stimulated Raman scattering in a hydrogen-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber exhibit strong self coherence and mutual coherence within each 12 ns driving laser pulse. This coherence arises in spite of the field's initiation being from quantum zero-point fluctuations, which causes each spectral component to show large phase and energy fluctuations. This points to the possibility of an optical frequency comb with nonclassical correlations between all comb lines.
Photon-echo based optical quantum memory schemes often employ intermediate steps to transform optical coherences to spin coherences for longer storage times. We analyze a scheme that uses three identical chirped control pulses for coherence rephasing in an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble of three-level $Λ$-systems. The pulses induce a cyclic permutation of the atomic populations in the adiabatic regime. Optical coherences created by a signal pulse are stored as spin coherences at an intermediate time interval, and are rephased for echo emission when the ensemble is returned to the initial s…
While the phase of a coherent light field can be precisely known, the phase of the individual photons that create this field, considered individually, cannot. Phase changes within single-photon wave packets, however, have observable effects. In fact, actively controlling the phase of individual photons has been identified as a powerful resource for quantum communication protocols. Here we demonstrate the arbitrary phase control of a single photon. The phase modulation is applied without affecting the photon's amplitude profile and is verified via a two-photon quantum interference measurement, …
We analyze the quantum-state purity of heralded single photons produced from frequency-anti-correlated biphotons. We find that the quantum-state purity in time-frequency domain depends strongly on the response time uncertainty of the trigger-photon detector that heralds the generation of its paired photon. If the trigger response time is much shorter than the two-photon coherence time, the time-frequency quantum-state purity of heralded single photons approaches unity and the heralded single photon is in a nearly pure state. If the trigger response time is much longer than the two-photon coher…
Temporal metamaterials empower novel forms of wave manipulation with direct applications to quantum state transformations. In this work, we investigate vacuum amplification effects in anisotropic temporal boundaries. Our results theoretically demonstrate that the anisotropy of the temporal boundary provides control over the angular distribution of the generated photons. We analyze several single and multi-layered configurations of anisotropic temporal boundaries, each with a distinct vacuum amplification effect. Examples include the inhibition of photon production along specific directions, re…
Quantum entanglement is an integral part of quantum optics and has been exploited in areas such as computation, cryptography and metrology. The entanglement between photons can be present in various degrees of freedom (DOFs), and even the simplest bi-partite systems can occupy a large Hilbert space. Therefore, it is desirable to exploit this multi-dimensional space for various quantum applications by fully controlling the properties of the entangled photons in multiple DOFs. While current entangled-photon sources are capable of generating entanglement in one or more DOFs, there is currently a …
Resonance fluorescence in the Heitler regime provides access to single photons with coherence well beyond the Fourier transform limit of the transition, and holds the promise to circumvent environment-induced dephasing common to all solid-state systems. Here we demonstrate that the coherently generated single photons from a single self-assembled InAs quantum dot display mutual coherence with the excitation laser on a timescale exceeding 3 seconds. Exploiting this degree of mutual coherence we synthesize near-arbitrary coherent photon waveforms by shaping the excitation laser field. In contrast…
Two-photon time-frequency entanglement is a valuable resource in quantum information. Resolving the wavepacket of ultrashort pulsed single-photons, however, is a challenge. Here, we demonstrate remote spectral shaping of single photon states and probe the coherence properties of two-photon quantum correlations in the time-frequency domain, using engineered parametric down-conversion (PDC) and a quantum pulse gate (QPG) in nonlinear waveguides. Through tailoring the joint spectral amplitude function of our PDC source we control the temporal mode structure between the generated photon pairs and …
It is a long-standing goal to generate robust deterministic states of light with unique quantum properties, such as squeezing, sub-Poissonian statistics and entanglement. It is of interest to consider whether such quantum states of light could be generated by exploiting interactions with free electrons, going beyond their already ubiquitous use in generating classical light. This question is motivated by developments in electron microscopy, which present a new platform for manipulating photons through their interaction with quantum free electrons. Here, we explore the shaping of photon statist…
