An overview of the Pondicherry interpretation of quantum mechanics is presented. This interpretation proceeds from the recognition that the fundamental theoretical framework of physics is a probability algorithm, which serves to describe an objective fuzziness (the literal meaning of Heisenberg's term "Unschaerfe," usually mistranslated as "uncertainty") by assigning objective probabilities to the possible outcomes of unperformed measurements. Although it rejects attempts to construe quantum states as evolving ontological states, it arrives at an objective description of the quantum world that owes nothing to observers or the goings-on in physics laboratories. In fact, unless such attempts are rejected, quantum theory's true ontological implications cannot be seen. Among these are the radically relational nature of space, the numerical identity of the corresponding relata, the incomplete spatiotemporal differentiation of the physical world, and the consequent top-down structure of reality, which defies attempts to model it from the bottom up, whether on the basis of an intrinsically differentiated spacetime manifold or out of a multitude of individual building blocks.
The phase-space formulation of quantum mechanics has recently seen increased use in testing quantum technologies, including metho ds of tomography for state verification and device validation. Here, an overview of quantum mechanics in phase space is presented. The formulation to generate a generalized phase-space function for any arbitrary quantum system is shown, such as the Wigner and Weyl functions along with the asso ciated Q and P functions. Examples of how these different formulations have b een used in quantum technologies are provided, with a focus on discrete quantum systems, qubits i…
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the Bohmian formulation of quantum mechanics. It starts with a historical review of the difficulties found by Louis de Broglie, David Bohm, and John S. Bell to convince the scientific community about the validity and utility of Bohmian mechanics. Then, a formal explanation of Bohmian mechanics for nonrelativistic, single-particle quantum systems is presented. The generalization to many-particle systems, where the exchange interaction and the spin play an important role, is also presented. After that, the measurement process in Bohmian mechanics…
Collapse models describe the breakdown of the quantum superposition principle when moving from microscopic to macroscopic scales. They are among the possible solutions to the quantum measurement problem and thus describe the emergence of classical mechanics from the quantum one. Testing collapse models is equivalent to test the limits of quantum mechanics. I will provide an overview on how one can test collapse models, and which are the future theoretical and experimental challenges ahead.
This chapter, from the Routledge Companion to the Philosophy of Physics (Eleanor Knox and Alastair Wilson, eds., 2021), is an overview of the constraints that relativity places on interpretations of quantum theory. It focuses on four main avenues of approach: (i) additional beables theories, which include "hidden-variables" theories and modal interpretations, (ii) dynamical collapse theories, (iii) Everettian, or "many-worlds" interpretations, and (iv) non-realist interpretations, which deny that quantum states represent anything in physical reality independent of considerations of agents and …
There are two different and logically independent concepts of noncontextuality in quantum mechanics. First, an ontological (hidden variable) model for quantum mechanics is called noncontextual if every ontic (hidden) state determines the probability of the outcomes of every measurement independently of what other measurements are simultaneously performed. Second, an ontological model is noncontextual if any two measurements which are represented by the same self-adjoint operator or, equivalently, which have the same probability distribution of outcomes in every quantum state also have the same…
The aim of the present paper is twofold. First, to give the main ideas behind quantum computingand quantum information, a field based on quantum-mechanical phenomena. Therefore, a shortreview is devoted to (i) quantum bits or qubits (and more generally qudits), the analogues of theusual bits 0 and 1 of the classical information theory, and to (ii) two characteristics of quantummechanics, namely, linearity (which manifests itself through the superposition of qubits and theaction of unitary operators on qubits) and entanglement of certain multi-qubit states (a resourcethat is specific to quantum…
The separability problem is one of the basic and emergent problems in the present and future quantum information processing. The latter focuses on information and computing based on quantum mechanics and uses quantum bits as its basic information units. In this paper, we present an overview of the progress in the separability problem in bipartite systems, more specifically in two quantum bits systems from the criterion based on the inequalities of Bell in $1964$ to the recent criteria of separability in 2018.
Quantum decoherence plays a pivotal role in the dynamical description of the quantum-to-classical transition and is the main impediment to the realization of devices for quantum information processing. This paper gives an overview of the theory and experimental observation of the decoherence mechanism. We introduce the essential concepts and the mathematical formalism of decoherence, focusing on the picture of the decoherence process as a continuous monitoring of a quantum system by its environment. We review several classes of decoherence models and discuss the description of the decoherence …

We give an overview and conceptual discussion of some of our results on contextuality and non-locality. We focus in particular on connections with the work of Itamar Pitowsky on correlation polytopes, Bell inequalities, and Boole's "conditions of possible experience".
Spontaneous localisation is a falsifiable dynamical mechanism which modifies quantum mechanics, and explains the absence of position superpositions in the macroscopic world. However, this is an ad hoc phenomenological proposal. Adler's theory of trace dynamics, working on a flat Minkowski space-time, derives quantum (field) theory, and spontaneous localisation, as a thermodynamic approximation to an underlying non-commutative matrix dynamics. We describe how to incorporate gravity into trace dynamics, by using ideas from Connes' non-commutative geometry programme. This leads us to a new quantu…
This paper provides an overview of the first experimental realizations of quantum-mechanical Maxwell's demons based on superconducting circuits. The principal results of these experiments are recalled and put into context. We highlight the versatility offered by superconducting circuits for studying quantum thermodynamics.
