A Clifford algebra over the binary field 2 = {0,1} is a second-order classical logic that is substantially richer than Boolean algebra. We use it as a bridge to a Clifford algebraic quantum logic that is richer than the usual Hilbert space quantum logic and admits iteration. This leads to a higher-order Clifford-algebraic logic. We formulate a toy Dirac equation with this logic. It isexactly Lorentz-invariant, yet it approximates the usual Dirac equation as closely as desired and all its variables have finite spectra. It is worth considering as a Lorentz-invariant improvement on lattice space-times.
We describe a simple algorithm for sampling $n$-qubit Clifford operators uniformly at random. The algorithm outputs the Clifford operators in the form of quantum circuits with at most $5n + 2n^2$ elementary gates and a maximum depth of $\mathcal{O}(n\log n)$ on fully connected topologies. The circuit can be output in a streaming fashion as the algorithm proceeds, and different parts of the circuit can be generated in parallel. The algorithm has an $\mathcal{O}(n^2)$ time complexity, which matches the current state of the art. The main advantage of the proposed algorithm, however, lies in its s…
Formulas to calculate multivector exponentials in a base-free representation and in a orthonormal basis are presented for an arbitrary Clifford geometric algebra Cl(p,q). The formulas are based on the analysis of roots of characteristic polynomial of a multivector. Elaborate examples how to use the formulas in practice are presented. The results may be useful in the quantum circuits or in the problems of analysis of evolution of the entangled quantum states.
With the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) encoding, Clifford gates and error correction can be carried out using simple Gaussian operations. Still, non-Clifford gates, required for universality, require non-Gaussian elements. In their original proposal, GKP suggested a particularly simple method of using a single application of the cubic phase gate to perform the logical non-Clifford T-gate. Here we show that this cubic phase gate approach performs extraordinarily poorly, even for arbitrarily large amounts of squeezing in the GKP state. Thus, contrary to common belief, the cubic phase gate is n…
In a continuous-variable optical system, the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) qubit is a promising candidate for fault-tolerant quantum computation. To implement non-Clifford operations on GKP qubits, non-Gaussian operations are required. In this context, the implementation of a cubic phase gate by combining nonlinear feedforward with ancillary states has been widely researched. Recently, however, it is pointed out that the cubic phase gate is not the most suitable for non-Clifford operations on GKP qubits. In this work, we show that we can achieve linear optical implementation of non-Clifford …
Bravyi and Gosset recently gave classical simulation algorithms for quantum circuits dominated by Clifford operations. These algorithms scale exponentially with the number of T-gate in the circuit, but polynomially in the number of qubits and Clifford operations. Here we extend their algorithm to qudits of odd prime dimensions. We generalize their approximate stabilizer rank method for weak simulation to qudits and obtain the scaling of the approximate stabilizer rank with the number of single-qudit magic states. We also relate the canonical form of qudit stabilizer states to Gauss sum evaluat…
We introduce an open-source software library Graphix, which optimizes and simulates measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC). By combining the measurement calculus with an efficient graph state simulator, Graphix allows the classical preprocessing of Pauli measurements in the measurement patterns, significantly reducing the number of operations required to perform the quantum computation while maintaining determinism. For a measurement pattern translated from a quantum circuit, this corresponds to the preprocessing of all Clifford gates, and this improvement in the one-way model is importa…
Local unitary versus local Clifford equivalence of stabilizer and graph states

I present a new approach for designing quantum error-correcting codes that guarantees a physically natural implementation of Clifford operations. Inspired by the scheme put forward by Gottesman, Kitaev, and Preskill for encoding a qubit in an oscillator, in which Clifford operations may be performed via Gaussian unitaries, this approach yields new schemes for encoding a qubit in a large spin in which single-qubit Clifford operations may be performed via spatial rotations. I construct all possible examples of such codes, provide universal-gate-set implementations using Hamiltonians that are at …

We consider quantum circuits composed of single-qubit operations and global entangling gates generated by Ising-type Hamiltonians. It is shown that such circuits can implement a large class of unitary operators commonly used in quantum algorithms at a very low cost -- using a constant or effectively constant number of global entangling gates. Specifically, we report constant-cost implementations of Clifford operations with and without ancillae, constant-cost implementation of the multiply controlled gates with linearly many ancillae, and an $O(\log^*(n))$ cost implementation of the $n$-control…

Randomized benchmarking is an experimental procedure intended to demonstrate control of quantum systems. The procedure extracts the average error introduced by a set of control operations. When the target set of operations is intended to be the set of Clifford operators, the randomized benchmarking algorithm is particularly easy to perform and its results have an important interpretation with respect to quantum computation. The aim of the benchmark is to provide a simple, useful parameter describing the quality of quantum control with an experiment that can be performed in a standard way on an…

Fault-tolerant, error-corrected quantum computation is commonly acknowledged to be crucial to the realisation of large-scale quantum algorithms that could lead to extremely impactful scientific or commercial results. Achieving a universal set of quantum gate operations in a fault-tolerant error-corrected framework suffers from a `conservation of unpleasantness'. In general, no matter what error correction technique is employed, there is always one element of a universal gate set that carries a significant resource overhead - either in physical qubits, computational time, or both. Specifically,…
