We propose a new method of spin squeezing of atomic spin, based on the interactions between atoms and off-resonant light which are known as paramagnetic Faraday rotation and fictitious magnetic field of light. Since the projection process, squeezed light, or special interactions among the atoms are not required in this method, it can be widely applied to many systems. The attainable range of the squeezing parameter is S^{-2/5}, where S is the total spin, which is limited by additional fluctuations imposed by coherent light and the spherical nature of the spin distribution.
Based on the recent twisting-tensor approach [T. Opatrny, ArXiv:1408.3265 (2014)], a specific scenario for fast and deep spin squeezing is proposed. Initially the state is subjected to one-axis twisting under optimum orientation, enabling the maximum squeezing rate allowed by the system nonlinearity. Later on, when for highly squeezed states the one-axis twisting deforms the uncertainty ellipse and deteriorates the squeezing properties, the process is switched to an effective two-axis counter-twisting by a sequence of $π/2$ pulses. The squeezing rate then slows to 2/3 of the maximum value, but…
A unified tensor description of quadratic spin squeezing interactions is proposed, covering the single- and two-axis twisting as special cases of a general scheme. A closed set of equations of motion of the first moments and variances is derived in Gaussian approximation and their solutions are discussed from the prospect of fastest squeezing generation. It turns out that the optimum rate of squeezing generation is governed by the difference between the largest and the smallest eigenvalues of the twisting tensor. A cascaded optical interferometer with Kerr nonlinear media is proposed as one of…
We consider the quantum Fisher information and spin squeezing in one-axis twisting model with a coherent spin state $|θ_{0},ϕ_{0}\rangle$. We analytically discuss the dependence of the two parameters: spin squeezing parameter $ξ^2_{K}$ and the average parameter estimation precision $χ^2$ on the polar angle $θ_{0}$ and the azimuth angle $ϕ_0$. Moreover, we discuss the effects of the collisional dephasing on the dynamics of the two parameters. In this case, the analytical solution of $ξ^2_K$ is also obtained.
We present a detailed analysis of spin squeezing of the one-axis twisting model with a many-body phase dephasing, which is induced by external field fluctuation in a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensates. Even in the presence of the dephasing, our analytical results show that the optimal initial state corresponds to a coherent spin state $|θ_{0}, ϕ_0\rangle$ with the polar angle $θ_0=π/2$. If the dephasing rate $γ\ll S^{-1/3}$, where $S$ is total atomic spin, we find that the smallest value of squeezing parameter (i.e., the strongest squeezing) obeys the same scaling with the ideal one-axis twist…
Squeezed spin states have important applications in quantum metrology and sensing. It has been shown by Sørensen and Mølmer [Phys. Rev. A 66, 022314(2002)] that an effective one-axis-twisting interaction can be realized in a cavity setup via a double off-resonance stimulated Raman scattering, resulting in a noise reduction scaling $\propto 1/N^{2/3}$ with $N$ being the atom number. Here, we show that, by making an appropriate change of the initial input spin state, it is possible to produce a one-axis-twisting spin squeezing via a \emph{single} off-resonance stimulated Raman scattering, which …
In two-component BEC, the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian leads to spin squeezing with the limitation that scales with the number of atoms as $N^{-\frac{2}{3}}$. We propose a scheme to transform the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian into a two-axis twisting Hamiltonian, resulting in enhanced spin squeezing $\propto N^{-1}$ approaching the Heisenberg limit. Instead of pulse sequences, only one continuous driving field is required to realizing such transforming, thus the scheme is promising for experiment realizations, to an one-axis twisting Hamiltonian. Quantum information processing and quantum met…
In the absence of decay, the conditional dynamics for an opensystem is often describable by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. This study investigates spin squeezing (SS) in non-Hermitian one-axis twisting (OAT) model. Somewhat surprisingly, SS close to the limit of Hermitian two-axis counter twisting (TACT) Hamiltonian is achievable for some parameters, which significantly improves upon the optimal value realizable by Hermitian OAT model. The drawback is like with all conditional schemes, it takes on average longer time to evolve into steady state, and the probability of no decay or success decreas…
We propose a scheme for spin-squeezing in the orbital motion of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a toroidal trap. A circular lattice couples two counter-rotating modes and squeezing is generated by the nonlinear interaction spatially modulated at half the lattice period. By varying the amplitude and phase of the modulation, various cases of the twisting tensor can be directly realized, leading to different squeezing regimes. These include one-axis twisting and the two-axis counter-twisting which are often discussed as the most important paradigms for spin squeezing. Our scheme naturally rea…
We show that spin squeezing implies pairwise entanglement for arbitrary symmetric multiqubit states. If the squeezing parameter is less than or equal to 1, we demonstrate a quantitative relation between the squeezing parameter and the concurrence for the even and odd states. We prove that the even states generated from the initial state with all qubits being spin down, via the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian, are spin squeezed if and only if they are pairwise entangled. For the states generated via the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian with an external transverse field for any number of qubits great…
Ultracold atoms in an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity are a powerful platform to produce spin squeezing since photon of cavity mode can induce nonlinear spin-spin interaction and thus generate a one-axis twisting Hamiltonian $H_{\text{OAT}}=qJ_{x}^{2}$, whose corresponding maximal squeezing factor scales as $N^{-2/3}$, where $N$ is the atomic number. On the contrary, for the other two-axis twisting Hamiltonian $H_{\text{TAT}}=q(J_{x}^{2}-J_{y}^{2})$, the maximal squeezing factor scales as $N^{-1}$, approaching the Heisenberg limit. In this paper, inspired by recent experiments of cavity-assis…
Many-body entangled states are key elements in quantum information science and quantum metrology. One important problem in establishing a high degree of many-body entanglement using optical techniques is the leakage of the system information via the light that creates such entanglement. We propose an all-optical interference-based approach to erase this information. Unwanted atom-light entanglement can be removed by destructive interference of three or more successive atom-light interactions, with only the desired effective atom-atom interaction left. This quantum erasure protocol allows imple…
A weak measurement approach is proposed to entangle and squeeze atoms. We show that even for very small coupling strength between light and atoms, one can achieve large squeezing unattainable with normal measurement-based squeezing. Post-selecting the photons interacting with spins via a weak off-resonant quantum nondemolition interaction (QND) in a state nearly orthogonal to its initial state can strengthen the entanglement among elementary spins and thus enhance spin squeezing. The squeezing process is probabilistic but the created state is unconditionally determined. Further control of the …
We investigate the dependence of spin squeezing on the polar angle of the initial coherent spin state $|θ_0, ϕ_0>$ in a generalized one-axis twisting model, where the detuning $δ$ is taken into account. We show explicitly that regardless of $δ$ and $ϕ_0$, previous results of the ideal one-axis twisting is recovered as long as $θ_0=π/2$. For a small departure of $θ_0$ from $π/2$, however, the achievable variance $(V_{-})_{\min}\sim N^{2/3}$, larger than the ideal case $N^{1/3}$. We also find that the maximal-squeezing time $t_{\min}$ scales as $N^{-5/6}$. Analytic expressions of $(V_{-})_{\min}…
We consider a large class of Ramsey interferometry protocols which are enhanced by squeezing and un-squeezing operations before and after a phase signal is imprinted on the collective spin of $N$ particles. We report an analytical optimization for any given particle number and strengths of (un-)squeezing. These results can be applied even when experimentally relevant decoherence processes during the squeezing and un-squeezing interactions are included. Noise between the two interactions is however not considered in this work. This provides a generalized characterization of squeezing echo proto…
The creation and manipulation of quantum entanglement is central to improving precision measurements. A principal method of generating entanglement for use in atom interferometry is the process of spin squeezing whereupon the states become more sensitive to $SU(2)$ rotations. One possibility to generate this entanglement is provided by one-axis twisting (OAT), where a many-particle entangled state of one degree of freedom is generated by a non-linear Hamiltonian. We introduce a novel method which goes beyond OAT to create squeezing and entanglement across two distinct degrees of freedom. We pr…
Here we provide a scheme of transforming the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian into the two-axis twisting one based on high order Trotter-Suzuki Approximation. Compared with the paper [Y. C. Liu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 013601 (2011)], our method can reduce the number of controlling cycles from $1000$ to $50$. Moreover, it is also spin number independent and takes shorter optimal evolution time contrast with the method in the work [C. Shen et al., Phys. Rev. A 87, 051801 (2013)]. The corresponding error analysis is also provided.
We theoretically investigate a scheme to enhance spin squeezing in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by utilizing the inherent mean-field dynamics of the condensate. Due to the asymmetry in the scattering lengths, the two components exhibit density oscillations where they spatially separate and recombine. The effective non-linearity responsible for spin squeezing is increased by up to three orders of magnitude when the two components spatially separate \cite{treutlein2010}. We perform a multi-mode simulation of the system using the truncated Wigner method, and show that this metho…
We study a production of spin-squeezed states with ultra-cold atomic fermions described by the Fermi-Hubbard model in the Mott insulating phase. We show activation of two twisting mechanisms by a position-dependent laser coupling between internal degrees of freedom of atoms. A single laser coupling simulates the one-axis twisting model with the orientation of the twisting axis determined by the coupling phase. Adding a second laser beam with a properly chosen phase paves the way to simulate the two-axis counter-twisting model, enabling to approach the Heisenberg-limited level of squeezing.
Many quantum state preparation methods rely on a combination of dissipative quantum state initialization, followed by unitary evolution to a desired target state. Here we demonstrate the usefulness of quantum measurement as an additional tool for quantum state preparation. Starting from a pure separable multipartite state, a control sequence, which includes rotation, spin squeezing via one-axis twisting, quantum measurement and post-selection, generates a highly entangled multipartite state, which we refer to as Projected Squeezed states (or PS states). Through an optimization method, we then …
Squeezed states of spin systems are an important entangled resource for quantum technologies, particularly quantum metrology and sensing. Here we consider the generation of spin squeezed states by interacting the spins with a dissipative ancillary system. We show that spin squeezing can be generated in this model by two different mechanisms: one-axis twisting and driven collective relaxation. We can interpolate between the two mechanisms by simply adjusting the detuning between the dissipative ancillary system and the spin system. Interestingly, we find that for both mechanisms, ancillary syst…
In an ensemble of two-level atoms that can be described in terms of a collective spin, entangled states can be used to enhance the sensitivity of interferometric precision measurements. While non-Gaussian spin states can produce larger quantum enhancements than spin-squeezed Gaussian states, their use requires the measurement of observables that are nonlinear functions of the three components of the collective spin. In this paper we develop strategies that achieve the optimal quantum enhancements using non-Gaussian states produced by a nonlinear one-axis-twisting Hamiltonian, and show that mea…
We study the quantum dynamics generated by a two-axis counter-twisting Hamiltonian from an initial spin coherent state in a spin-$1/2$ ensemble. A characteristic feature of the two-axis counter-twisting Hamiltonian is the existence of four neutrally stable and two saddle unstable fixed points. The presence of the last one is responsible for a high level of squeezing. The squeezing is accompanied by the appearance of several quantum states of interest in quantum metrology with Heisenberg-limited sensitivity, and we show fidelity functions for some of them. We present exact results for the quant…
We show that the two-axis counter twisting interaction squeezes a coherent spin state into three states of interest in quantum information, namely, the twin-Fock state, the equally-weighted superposition state, and the state that achieves the Heisenberg limit of optimal sensitivity defined by the Cramer-Rao inequality in addition to the well-known Heisenberg-limited state of spin fluctuations.
We describe a new approach to spin squeezing based on a double-pass Faraday interaction between an optical probe and an optically dense atomic sample. A quantum eraser is used to remove residual spin-probe entanglement, thereby realizing a single-axis twisting unitary map on the collective spin. This interaction can be phase-matched, resulting in exponential enhancement of squeezing. In practice the scaling and peak squeezing depends on decoherence, technical loss, and noise. A simplified model indicates ~10 dB of squeezing should be achievable with current laboratory parameters.
The strong light-matter coupling attainable in optical cavities enables the generation of highly squeezed states of atomic ensembles. It was shown in [Phys. Rev. A 66, 022314 (2002)] how an effective one-axis twisting Hamiltonian can be realized in a cavity setup. Here, we extend this work and show how an effective two-axis twisting Hamiltonian can be realized in a similar cavity setup. We compare the two schemes in order to characterize their advantages. In the absence of decoherence, the two-axis Hamiltonian leads to more squeezing than the one-axis Hamiltonian. If limited by decoherence fro…
A simple formula is derived for the maximum squeezing rate which occurs at the initial stages of the squeezing process: the rate only depends on the second partial derivatives of a classical Hamiltonian. Rules for optimum rotation of the phase space are found to keep the state optimally located and oriented for fastest squeezing. These operations transform the phase-space point of interest into a saddle point with opposite principal curvatures. Similar results are found for the Bloch-sphere phase space and spin squeezing. Application of the general formulas is illustrated by several model exam…
Spin squeezing is one of the most attractive methods for realizing high-precision metrology. In this paper, we propose a protocol for generating spin squeezing in an atomic ensemble via a fully quantum degenerate parametric amplifier. We discuss the properties of generating spin squeezing with and without driving the pump cavity. Numerical simulation results show that the generated spin squeezing strength is sizable, and is able to be comparable to that obtained using a two-axis twisting (TAT) model. Moreover, we demonstrate that the protocol is experimentally feasible by introducing the corre…
The dynamics of squeezing across quantum phase transition in two basic models, viz., the one-axis twisting model in transverse field and the Dicke model, is investigated using Holstein-Primakoff representation in the large spin limit. Near the phase boundary between the disordered (normal) and the ordered (superradiant) phase, the strength of spin and photon squeezing and the duration of time for which the system stays in the highly squeezed state are found to exhibit strong power-law growth with distance from the quantum critical point. The critical exponent for squeezing time is found to be …
A scheme to achieve spin squeezing using a geometric phase induced by a single mechanical mode is proposed. The analytical and numerical results show that the ultimate degree of spin squeezing depends on the parameter $\frac{n_{th}+1/2}{Q\sqrt{N}}$, which is the ratio between the thermal excitation, the quality factor and square root of ensemble size. The undesired coupling between the spin ensemble and the bath can be efficiently suppressed by Bang-Bang control pulses. With high quality factor, the ultimate limit of the ideal one-axis twisting spin squeezing can be obtained for an NV ensemble…
We analyze a model for spin squeezing based on the so-called counter-twisting Hamiltonian, including the effects of dissipation and finite system size. We discuss the conditions under which the Heisenberg limit, i.e. phase sensitivity $\propto 1/N$, can be achieved. A specific implementation of this model based on atom-atom interactions via quantized photon exchange is presented in detail. The resulting excitation corresponds to the creation of spin-flipped atomic pairs and can be used for fast generation of entangled atomic ensembles, spin squeezing and apllications in quantum information pro…

There is currently much interest in the two-axis countertwisting spin squeezing Hamiltonian suggested originally by Kitagawa and Ueda, since it is useful for interferometry and metrology. No analytical solution valid for arbitrary spin values seems to be available. In this article we systematically consider the issue of the analytical solvability of this Hamiltonian for various specific spin values. We show that the spin squeezing dynamics can be considered to be analytically solved for angular momentum values upto $21/2$, i.e. for $21$ spin half particles. We also identify the properties of t…
We propose a scheme to realize the two-axis counter-twisting spin-squeezing Hamiltonian inside an optical cavity with the aid of phase-locked atom-photon coupling. By careful analysis and extensive simulation, we demonstrate that our scheme is robust against dissipation caused by cavity loss and atomic spontaneous emission, and it can achieve significantly higher squeezing than one axis twisting. We further show how our idea can be extended to generate two-mode spin-squeezed states in two coupled cavities. Due to its easy implementation and high tunability, our scheme is experimentally realiza…
Two well-known mechanisms, one-axis twisting (OAT) and two-axis countertwisting (TACT), generate spinsqueezed states dynamically. The latter provides better spin squeezing (SS) but has not been demonstrated as the form of its interaction does not occur naturally in known physical systems. Several proposals for realizing effective TACT transformed from OAT require stringent experimental conditions in order to overcome the resulting nonstationary (oscillating) SS and continuously varying mean spin directions. This work presents a simple scheme that solves both problems by freezing SS at an optim…
This paper reviews quantum spin squeezing, which characterizes the sensitivity of a state with respect to an SU(2) rotation, and is significant for both entanglement detection and high-precision metrology. We first present various definitions of spin squeezing parameters, explain their origin and properties for typical states, and then discuss spin-squeezed states produced with the Ising and the nonlinear twisting Hamiltonians. Afterwards, we explain correlations and entanglement in spin-squeezed states, as well as the relations between spin squeezing and quantum Fisher information, where the …
It has been shown elsewhere that two spatially separated atoms can jointly absorb one photon, whose frequency is equal to the sum of the transition frequencies of the two atoms. We describe this process in the presence of an ensemble of many two-level atoms, and show that it can be used to generate spin squeezing and entanglement. This resonant collective process allows to create a sizeable squeezing already at the single-photon limit. It represents a novel way for generating manybody spin-spin interactions, yielding a two-axis twisting-like interaction among the spins, which is very effcient …
We examine transfer of particle entanglement and spin squeezing between atomic and photonic subsystems in optical cavities coupled by two-photon exchange. Each cavity contains a single atom, interacting with cavity photons with a two-photon cascade transition. Particle entanglement is characterized by evaluating optimal spin squeezing inequalities, for the cases of initially separable and entangled two-photon states. It is found that particle entanglement is first generated among the photons in separate cavities and then transferred to the atoms. The underlying mechanism is recognized as an in…
We show that the classical model of Euler top (freely rotating, generally asymmetric rigid body), possibly supplemented with a rotor, corresponds to a generalized Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model describing phenomena of various branches of quantum physics. Classical effects such as free precession of a symmetric top, Feynman's wobbling plate, tennis-racket instability and the Dzhanibekov effect, attitude control of satellites by momentum wheels, or twisting somersault dynamics, have their counterparts in quantum effects that include spin squeezing by one-axis twisting and two-axis countertwist…
Here we examine the generation of Twist and Turn (TNT) Squeezing in a large atom-number Bose-Einstein Condensate for the purposes of generating quantum-enhanced states for atom interferometry. Unlike previous analysis, we examine situations where the multi-mode dynamics is significant, and cannot be captured by a simple single-mode model. We find that in some regimes, with careful choice of the rotation parameter, we can still obtain squeezing much more rapidly than via one-axis twisting (OAT).
We demonstrate that the one-axis twisting (OAT), a versatile method of creating non-classical states of bosonic qubits, is a powerful source of many-body Bell correlations. We develop a fully analytical and universal treatment of the process, which allows us to identify the critical time at which the Bell correlations emerge, and predict the depth of Bell correlations at all subsequent times. Our findings are illustrated with a highly non-trivial example of the OAT dynamics generated using the Bose-Hubbard model.
We reconsider the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian, which is commonly used for generating spin squeezing, and treat its dynamics within the Heisenberg operator approach. To this end we solve the underlying Heisenberg equations of motion perturbatively and evaluate the expectation values of the resulting time-dependent Heisenberg operators in order to determine approximately the dynamics of spin squeezing. Comparing our results with those originating from exact numerics reveals that they are more accurate than the commonly used frozen spin approximation.
