The problem of the estimation of multiple phases (or of commuting unitaries) is considered. This is a sub-model of the estimation of a completely unknown unitary operation where it has been shown in recent works that there are considerable improvements by using entangled input states and entangled measurements. Here it is shown that when estimating commuting unitaries, there is practically no advantage in using entangled input states or entangled measurements.
We show that each entanglement witness detecting given bipartite entangled state provides an estimation of its concurrence. We illustrate our result with several well known examples of entanglement witnesses and compare the corresponding estimation of concurrence with other estimations provided by the trace norm of partial transposition and realignment.
The parameterized entanglement monotone, the $q$-concurrence, is also a reasonable parameterized entanglement measure. By exploring the properties of the $q$-concurrence with respect to the positive partial transposition and realignment of density matrices, we present tight lower bounds of the $q$-concurrence for arbitrary $q\geqslant 2$. Detailed examples are given to show that the bounds are better than the previous ones.
We present a method to estimate entanglement measures in experiments. We show how a lower bound on a generic entanglement measure can be derived from the measured expectation values of any finite collection of entanglement witnesses. Hence witness measurements are given a quantitative meaning without the need of further experimental data. We apply our results to a recent multi-photon experiment [M. Bourennane et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 087902 (2004)], giving bounds on the entanglement of formation and the geometric measure of entanglement in this experiment.
We give an introduction to Gaussian states and operations. A discussion of the entanglement properties of bipartite Gaussian states in terms of its covariance matrix follows. It is explained how entanglement can be witnessed using feasible measurements, e.g. homodyne measurements. We find that the outcome of such a measurements cannot only witness but also quantify entanglement.
Quantum state teleportation is a protocol where a shared entangled state is used as a quantum channel to transmit quantum information between distinct locations. Here we consider the task of estimating entanglement in teleportation experiments. We show that the data accessible in a teleportation experiment allows to put a lower bound on some entanglement measures, such as entanglement negativity and robustness. Furthermore, we show cases in which the lower bounds are tight. The introduced lower bounds can also be interpreted as quantifiers of the nonclassicality of a teleportation experiment. …
Entanglement detection and estimation are fundamental in quantum information science. Compared with discrete-variable states, for which lots of efficient entanglement detection criteria and lower bounds of entanglement measures have been proposed, the continuous-variable entanglement is much less understood. Here we shall present a family of entanglement witnesses based on continuous-variable local orthogonal observables (CVLOOs) to detect and estimate entanglement of Gaussian and non-Gaussian states, especially for bound entangled states. By choosing an optimal set of CVLOOs our entanglement …
Entanglement monotones, such as the concurrence, are useful tools to characterize quantum correlations in various physical systems. The computation of the concurrence involves, however, difficult optimizations and only for the simplest case of two qubits a closed formula was found by Wootters [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 2245 (1998)]. We show how this approach can be generalized, resulting in lower bounds on the concurrence for higher dimensional systems as well as for multipartite systems. We demonstrate that for certain families of states our results constitute the strongest bipartite entanglement …
We investigate the lower bound obtained from experimental data of a quantum state $ρ$, as proposed independently by Gühne et al. and Eisert et al. for mixed states of three qubits. The measure we consider is the convex-roof extended three-tangle. Our findings highlight an intimate relation to lower bounds obtained recently from so-called characteristic curves of a given entanglement measure. We apply the bounds to estimate the three-tangle present in recently performed experiments aimed at producing a three-qubit GHZ state. A non-vanishing lower bound is obtained if the GHZ-fidelity of the pro…
The logarithmic derivative (or, quantum score) of a positive definite density matrix appearing in the quantum Fisher information is discussed, and its exact expression is presented. Then, the problem of estimating the parameters in a class of the Werner-type N-qudit states is studied in the context of the quantum Cramér-Rao inequality. The largest value of the lower bound to the error of estimate by the quantum Fisher information is shown to coincide with the separability point only in the case of two qubits. It is found, on the other hand, that such largest values give rise to the universal f…

The experimental determination of entanglement is a major goal in the quantum information field. In general the knowledge of the state is required in order to quantify its entanglement. Here we express a lower bound to the robustness of entanglement of a state based only on the measurement of the energy observable and on the calculation of a separability energy. This allows the estimation of entanglement dismissing the knowledge of the state in question.
Computing localizable entanglement for noisy many-particle quantum states is difficult due to the optimization over all possible sets of local projection measurements. Therefore, it is crucial to develop lower bounds, which can provide useful information about the behaviour of localizable entanglement, and which can be determined by measuring a limited number of operators, or by performing least number of measurements on the state, preferably without performing a full state tomography. In this paper, we adopt two different yet related approaches to obtain a witness-based, and a measurement-bas…
We determine all $2\times 2$ quantum states that can serve as useful catalysts for a given probabilistic entanglement transformation, in the sense that they can increase the maximal transformation probability. When higher-dimensional catalysts are considered, a sufficient and necessary condition is derived under which a certain probabilistic transformation has useful catalysts.
We consider entanglement distillation from a single-copy of a multipartite state, and instead of rates we analyze the "quality" of the distilled entanglement. This "quality" is quantified by the fidelity with the GHZ-state. We show that each not fully-separable state $σ$ can increase the "quality" of the entanglement distilled from other states, no matter how weakly entangled is $σ$. We also generalize this to the case where the goal is distilling states different than the GHZ. These results provide new insights on the geometry of the set of separable states and its dual (the set of entangleme…
Photonic cluster states are a crucial resource for optical quantum computing. Recently a quantum dot single photon source has been demonstrated to produce strings of photons in a linear cluster state, but high photon loss rates make it impossible to characterize the entanglement generated by conventional methods. We present a benchmarking method for such sources that can be used to demonstrate useful long-range entanglement with currently available collection/detection efficiencies below 1%. Measurement of the polarization state of single photons in different bases can provide an estimate for …
We experimentally demonstrate a general criterion to identify entangled states useful for the estimation of an unknown phase shift with a sensitivity higher than the shot-noise limit. We show how to exploit this entanglement on the examples of a maximum likelihood as well as of a Bayesian phase estimation protocol. Using an entangled four-photon state we achieve a phase sensitivity clearly beyond the shot-noise limit. Our detailed comparison of methods and quantum states for entanglement enhanced metrology reveals the connection between multiparticle entanglement and sub-shot-noise uncertainty…
Teleportation witnesses are hermitian operators which can identify useful entanglement for quantum teleportation. Here we provide a systematic method to construct teleportation witnesses from entanglement witnesses corresponding to general qudit systems. The witnesses so constructed are shown to be optimal for qubit and qutrit systems, and therefore detect the largest set of states useful for teleportation within a given class. We demonstrate the action of the witness pertaining to different classes of states in qubits and qutrits. Decomposition of the witness in terms of spin operators facili…
We derive general upper bounds on the distillable entanglement of a mixed state under one-way and two-way LOCC. In both cases, the upper bound is based on a convex decomposition of the state into 'useful' and 'useless' quantum states. By 'useful', we mean a state whose distillable entanglement is non-negative and equal to its coherent information (and thus given by a single-letter, tractable formula). On the other hand, 'useless' states are undistillable, i.e., their distillable entanglement is zero. We prove that in both settings the distillable entanglement is convex on such decompositions. …
We examine the powers of entanglement-assisted transformation and multiple-copy entanglement transformation. First, we find a sufficient condition of when a given catalyst is useful in producing another specific target state. As an application of this condition, for any non-maximally entangled bipartite pure state and any integer $n$ not less than 4, we are able to explicitly construct a set of $n\times n$ quantum states which can be produced by using the given state as a catalyst. Second, we prove that for any positive integer $k$, entanglement-assisted transformation with $k\times k$-dimensi…
Entanglement-assisted quantum communication employs pre-shared entanglement between sender and receiver as a resource. We apply the same framework to quantum metrology, introducing shared entanglement between the preparation and the measurement stage, namely using some entangled ancillary system that does not interact with the system to be sampled. This is known to be useless in the noiseless case, but was recently shown to be useful in the presence of noise. Here we detail how and when it can be of use. For example, surprisingly it is useful when randomly time sharing two channels where ancil…
The goal of quantum metrology is the exploitation of quantum resources, like entanglement or quantum coherence, in the fundamental task of parameter estimation. Here we consider the question of the estimation of the Unruh temperature in the scenario of relativistic quantum metrology. Specifically, we study two distinct cases. First, a single Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a scalar quantum field undergoes an uniform acceleration for a finite amount of proper time, and the role of coherence in the estimation process is analyzed. After this, we consider two initially entangled detectors, …
Absolutely separable states form a special subset of the set of all separable states, as they remain separable under any global unitary transformation unlike other separable states. In this work we consider the set of absolutely separable bipartite states and show that it is convex and compact in any arbitrary dimensional Hilbert space. Through a generic approach of construction of suitable hermitian operators we prove the completeness of the separation axiom for identifying any separable state that is not absolutely separable. We demonstrate the action of such witness operators in different q…
The most useful measure of a bipartite entanglement is the von Neumann entropy of either of the reduced density matrices. For a particular class of continuous-variable states, the Gaussian states, the entropy of entanglement can be expressed rather elegantly in terms of the symplectic eigenvalues, elements that characterize a Gaussian state and depend on the correlations of the canonical variables. We give a pedagogical step-by-step derivation of this result and provide some insights that can be useful in practical calculations.
We address the question whether identical-particle entanglement is a useful resource for quantum information processing. We answer this question positively by reporting a scheme to create entanglement using semiconductor quantum wells. The Pauli exclusion principle forces quantum correlations between the spins of two independent fermions in the conduction band. Selective electron-hole recombination then transfers this entanglement to the polarization of emitted photons, which can subsequently be used for quantum information tasks.
Entanglement distribution with separable states has recently attracted considerable attention. Recent results suggest that quantum discord - a measure for quantum correlations beyond entanglement - is responsible for this counterintuitive phenomenon. In this work we study this question from a different perspective, and find minimal requirements for a separable state to be useful for entanglement distribution. Surprisingly, we find that the presence of quantum discord is not sufficient to ensure entanglement distribution: there exist states with nonzero quantum discord which nevertheless cannot…
We show how to find families of infima and suprema for the entanglement negativity using only a few, low-order moments of the partially transposed density matrix $ρ^{T_2}.$ These moments can be measured using the multi-copy quantum circuits previously given by the author, which define a set of multi-copy expectation values and thus can be used with the replica trick. As such, these bounds are suitable for use with Quantum Monte Carlo methods, and the lower order versions of the estimates may be experimentally accessible for some systems. Using more moments for higher-order versions of these me…
The problem of estimating the spectrum of a density matrix is considered. Other problems, such as bipartite pure state entanglement, can be reduced to spectrum estimation. A local operations and classical communication (LOCC) measurement strategy is shown which is asymptotically optimal. This means that, for a very large number of copies, it becomes unnecessary to perform collective measurements which should be more difficult to implement in practice.
We introduce the idea that the knowable quantum reality depends not only on the state but also on measurements. Mathematically, we map the states from the ordinary Hilbert space into new states in what we call the measurement space. The state vectors in the measurement space contain only the information accessible with a particular set of measurements. The space can be used to find the operational equivalent of any information theoretic quantity. We use the formalism to define the operationally meaningful entanglement, explore its properties and apply it to mode entanglement. There we find tha…
Quantum algorithms could efficiently solve certain classically intractable problems by exploiting quantum parallelism. To date, whether the quantum entanglement is useful or not for quantum computing is still a question of debate. Here, we present a new quantum algorithm to show that entanglement could help to gain advantage over classical algorithm and even the quantum algorithm without entanglement. Furthermore, we implement experiments to demonstrate our proposed algorithm using superconducting qubits. Our results show the viability of the algorithm and suggest that entanglement is essentia…
Information sources used for communication purposes usually are assumed to be i.i.d. type, especially as far as entanglement or nonlocality properties are concerned. Here we proposed simple scheme for detection of nonlocality of non i.i.d. sources based on the program idea which can be useful in communication tasks including quantum cryptography and communication complexity reduction. The principle of the scheme is rather general and can be applied to other problems like detection of entanglement coming from non-i.i.d sources.
In this paper, we review how to obtain the central charge of a critical entanglement Hamiltonian through the nested entanglement entropy which was first introduced in [J. Lou et al. PRB 84, 245128 (2011)]. The critical phenomena of the entanglement Hamiltonian can be identified by the central charge obtained by the nested entanglement entropy. We review our previous studies[J. Lou et al. PRB 84, 245128 (2011), S. Tanaka et al. PRA 87, 214401 (2013)] in which we investigated certain entanglement nature of two-dimensional valence-bond-solid (VBS) state and quantum hard-square models on square an…

It is shown that Smolin four-qubit bound entangled states [Phys. Rev. A, 63 032306 (2001)] can maximally violate two-setting Bell inequality similar to standard CHSH inequality. Surprisingly this entanglement does not allow for secure key distillation, so neither entanglement nor violation of Bell inequalities implies quantum security. It is also pointed out how that kind of bound entanglement can be useful in reducing communication complexity.
It is shown that if a mixed state can be distilled to the singlet form, it must violate partial transposition criterion [A. Peres, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1413 (1996)]. It implies that there are two qualitatively different types of entanglement: ``free'' entanglement which is distillable, and ``bound'' entanglement which cannot be brought to the singlet form useful for quantum communication purposes. Possible physical meaning of the result is discussed.
We solve the problem of the optimal cloning of pure entangled two-qubit states with a fixed degree of entanglement using local operations and classical communication. We show, that amazingly, classical communication between the parties can improve the fidelity of local cloning if and only if the initial entanglement is higher than a certain critical value. It is completely useless for weakly entangled states. We also show that bound entangled states with positive partial transpose are not useful as a resource to improve the best local cloning fidelity.
A utility theory of entanglement is formulated, based on the von Neumann--Morgenstern theorem. As a specific example, a protocol for measurement--induced entanglement is studied, in which the amount of entanglement obtained depends on the random result of a measurement on an ancilla. It is shown that the maximization of the utility requires a non--trivial strategy. The results are especially useful when the interaction between the ancilla and the systems to be entangled is weak.

We show how to verify the metrological usefulness of quantum states based on the expectation values of an arbitrarily chosen set of observables. In particular, we estimate the quantum Fisher information as a figure of merit of metrological usefulness. Our approach gives a tight lower bound on the quantum Fisher information for the given incomplete information. We apply our method to the results of various multiparticle quantum states prepared in experiments with photons and trapped ions, as well as to spin-squeezed states and Dicke states realized in cold gases. Our approach can be used for de…
It is shown that entanglement, which is a quantum correlation property of at least two subsystems, is imprinted in the mode structure of a single photon. The photon, which is emitted by two coupled cavities, carries the information on the concurrence of the two intracavity fields. This can be useful for recording the entanglement dynamics of two cavity fields and for entanglement transfer.
In general, generation of entangled photon pairs and also the random choice of measurement basis can be implemented with passive optical devices in entanglement based quantum key distribution (QKD) system. However, auxiliary random numbers are still mandatory for conducting the privacy amplification procedure. In this paper, we propose a fully passive entanglement based QKD scheme in which certified random bits for privacy amplification are extracted from detection events of measurement-basis-mismatched entangled photon pairs. The privacy of these random bits can be certified by estimating the…
We show why and when entanglement is needed for quantum-enhanced precision measurements, and which type of entanglement is useful. We give a simple, intuitive construction that shows how entanglement transforms parallel estimation strategies into sequential ones of same precision. We employ this argument to generalize conventional quantum metrology, to identify a class of noise whose effects can be easily managed, and to treat the case of indistinguishable probes (such as interferometry with light).
Entanglement of quasiclassical (coherent) states of two harmonic oscillators leads to striking quantum effects and is useful for quantum technologies. These effects and applications are closely related to nonlocal correlations inherent in these states, manifested by the violation of Bell inequalities. With previous frameworks, this violation is limited by the size of the system, which does not approach the maximum even when the amount of entanglement approaches its maximum. Here we propose a new version of Bell correlation operators, with which a nearly maximal violation can be obtained as lon…
