Generally, when imaginary part of an optical potential is non-symmetric the reflectivity, $R(E)$, shows left/right handedness, further if it is not negative-definite the reflection and transmission, $T(E)$, coefficients become anomalous in some energy intervals and absorption is indefinite ($\pm$). We find that the complex PT-symmetric potentials could be exceptional in this regard. They may act effectively like an absorptive potential for any incident energy provided the particle enters from the preferred (absorptive) side.
We describe a method for the accurate calculation of bound-state and resonance energies for one-dimensional potentials. We calculate the shape resonances for symmetric two-barrier potentials and compare them with those coming from the Siegert approximation, the complex scaling method and the box-stabilization method. A comparison of the Breit-Wigner profile and the transmission coefficient about its maximum illustrates that the agreement is better the sharper the resonance.
By applying continuity and boundary conditions, the reflection and transmission coefficients of one-dimensional time-independent Schrödinger equation with a symmetric barrier-type shifted Deng-Fan potential are obtained and discussed. The numerical and graphical results are very accurate and consistent with the quantum transmission-reflection principle.
Scattering on the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric Coulomb potential is studied along a U-shaped trajectory circumventing the origin in the complex $x$ plane from below. This trajectory reflects ${\cal PT}$ symmetry, sets the appropriate boundary conditions for bound states and also allows the restoration of the correct sign of the energy eigenvalues. Scattering states are composed from the two linearly independent solutions valid for non-integer values of the 2L parameter, which would correspond to the angular momentum in the usual Hermitian setting. Transmission and reflection coefficients are written …
We study an anti-symmetric (square) well and barrier potential of depth/height $(V_0)$ placed between two rigid walls. Unlike the usual double-well, here the closely lying sub-barrier doublets need not be the lowest ones in the spectrum. When $V_0$ admits certain calculable values, $E=0$ or $E=V_0$ or both could become energy eigenvalues of the special eigenstate which emerge only if one seeks a linear solution of Schr{ö}dinger equation in the appropriate regions.
Tunneling of electrons through a barrier with complex potential is investigated. We focus on two cases, symmetric double rectangular barrier and double delta potential barrier, and give expressions for resonant transmission probability for both cases. Expressions for reflection amplitude and absorption are also obtained in the case of delta potential. It will be shown that for given dimensions of the potential barrier and the real part of the potential, resonant transmission probability approaches infinity for only one positive value of the imaginary part of the potential.
In quantum scattering, Hermiticity is necessary for both reciprocity and unitarity. Reciprocity means that both reflectivity (R) and transmitivity (T) are insensitive to the direction of incidence of a wave (particle) at a scatterer from left/right. Unitarity means that R+T=1. In scattering from non-Hermitian PT-symmetric structures the (left/right) handedness (non-reciprocity) of reflectivity is known to be essential and unitarity remains elusive so far. Here we present a surprising occurrence of both reciprocity and unitarity in scattering from a complex PT-symmetric potential. In special ca…
The Parity-Time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric potentials are derived by non-Hermitian supersymmetric quantum mechanics for square well and barrier. These $\mathcal{PT}$-supersymmetric square well and barrier. The partners have complex partners. The partners are isospectral with real energies. $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is only unbroken for the bound states.
A simple formalism for exploring quantum scattering and possible bound states in an arbitrary symmetric and localized potential in a unified way is presented. The symmetric square barrier and well potentials are used for illustrating the method.
The question of how long a particle takes to pass through a potential barrier is still a controversial topic in quantum mechanics. Arguably, the main theoretical problem in obtaining estimates for measurable times is the fact that previously defined time operators, that remained within the borders of standard quantum mechanics, present some kind of pathology. Recently, a time operator acting on an additional Hilbert space has been shown to support both Hermiticity and canonical relation with an energy observable. The theory is built in a framework which treats space and time as symmetrically a…
We consider coherent tunneling of one-dimensional model systems in non-cyclic or cyclic symmetric double well potentials. Generic potentials are constructed which allow for analytical estimates of the quantum dynamics in the non-relativistic deep tunneling regime, in terms of the tunneling distance, barrier height and mass (or moment of inertia). For cyclic systems, the results may be scaled to agree well with periodic potentials for which semi-analytical results in terms of Mathieu functions exist. Starting from a wavepacket which is initially localized in one of the potential wells, the subs…
We numerically study the impact of Gaussian barrier height and width on the gray solitons population in a symmetric and asymmetric potential trap. The gray solitons are created in a double-well potential by the density engineering method. Two identical Bose-Einstein condensate fragments are confined and made to collide by switching off the Gaussian barrier in a double-well potential. We find that the gray solitons population can be manipulated by Gaussian barrier height and width. We also study the gray solitons population dependence on the coupling strength. Moreover, we also study the impact…
Information entropic measures such as Fisher information, Shannon entropy, Onicescu energy and Onicescu Shannon entropy of a symmetric double-well potential are calculated in both position and momentum space. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of this system are obtained through a variation-induced exact diagonalization procedure. The information entropy-based uncertainty relation is shown to be a better measure than conventional uncertainty product in interpreting purely quantum mechanical phenomena, such as, tunneling and quantum confinement in this case. Additionally, the phase-space description …
When a single-layer graphene sheet is contacted with metallic electrodes, tunnel barriers are formed as a result of the doping of graphene by the metal in the contact region. If the Fermi energy level is modulated by a gate voltage, the phenomenon of Klein tunneling results in specific features in the conductance and noise. Here we obtain analytically exact solutions for the transmission and reflection probability amplitudes using a trapezoidal potential barrier, allowing us to calculate the differential conductance and the Fano factor for a graphene sheet in the ballistic regime. We put in ev…
By taking into account the full four band energy spectrum, we calculate the transmission probability and conductance of electrons across symmetric and asymmetric double potential barrier with a confined interlayer potential difference in bilayer graphene. For energies less than the interlayer coupling γ_{1}, E<γ_1, we have one channel for transmission which exhibits resonances, even for incident particles with energies less than the strength of barriers, E < U_j, depending on the double barrier geometry. In contrast, for higher energies E > γ_{1}, we obtain four possible ways for transmission …
The exact solution of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with symmetric trigonometric double-well potential (DWP) is obtained via angular oblate spheroidal function. The results of stringent analytic calculation for the ground state splitting of ring-puckering vibration in the 1,3-dioxole (as an example of the case when the ground state tunneling doublet is well below the potential barrier top) and 2,3-dihydrofuran (as an example of the case when the ground state tunneling doublet is close to the potential barrier top) are compared with several variants of approximate semiclassical (WKB)…
Time continues to be an intriguing physical property in the modern era. On the one hand, we have the Classical and Relativistic notion of time, where space and time have the same hierarchy, which is essential in describing events in spacetime. On the other hand, in Quantum Mechanics, time appears as a classical parameter, meaning that it does not have an uncertainty relation with its canonical conjugate. In this work, we use a recent proposed spacetime-symmetric formalism~\href{https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.95.032133}{[Phys.~Rev.~A {\bf 95}, 032133 (2017)]} that tries to solve the unbalance…
The scattering of a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) from a Gaussian well and Gaussian barrier is investigated over a wide range of depths and heights, respectively. We compare analytical and numerical results for a BEC scattering from Gaussian Obstacles, both in the presence and in the absence of PT-symmetric potential. And we find out that the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation (CGLE) method has limitations due to the limited number of variational parameters of the ansatz. We also find that the presence of the PT-symmetric potential controls the reflection and the transmission flux of the BEC th…
