We assess the security of a quantum key distribution protocol relying on the transmission of Gaussian-modulated coherent states and homodyne detection. This protocol is shown to be equivalent to a squeezed state protocol based on a CSS code construction, and is thus provably secure against any eavesdropping strategy. We also briefly show how this protocol can be generalized in order to improve the net key rate.
We analyze the security against collective attacks for a homodyne-based continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol using binary coherent states and postselection. We derive a lower bound of the secret key rate in an asymptotic scenario, and numerically optimize it for the case of a symmetric Gaussian channel.
The practical homodyne detector model of continuous-variable quantum key distribution models the inherent imperfections of the practical homodyne detector, namely the limited detection efficiency and the electronic noise, into trusted loss. However, the conventional practical homodyne detector model is valid only when both the imperfections of the practical homodyne detector are calibrated. In this paper, we show a modified practical homodyne detector model that can model the imperfections separately. The phase-sensitive amplifier is further applied to compensate the imperfections of the pract…
The Cramér-Rao bound plays a central role in both classical and quantum parameter estimation, but finding the observable and the resulting inversion estimator that saturates this bound remains an open issue for general multi-outcome measurements. Here we consider multi-outcome homodyne detection in a coherent-light Mach-Zehnder interferometer and construct a family of inversion estimators that almost saturate the Cramér-Rao bound over the whole range of phase interval. This provides a clue on constructing optimal inversion estimators for phase estimation and other parameter estimation in any m…
Homodyne measurements are a widely used quantum measurement. Using a coherent state of large amplitude as the local oscillator, it can be shown that the quantum homodyne measurement limits to a field quadrature measurement. In this work, we give an example of a general idea: injecting non-classical states as a local oscillator can led to non-classical measurements. Specifically we consider injecting a superposition of coherent states, a Schrödinger cat state, as a local oscillator. We derive the Kraus operators and the positive operator-valued measure (POVM) in this situation.
Secure quantum key distribution with multimode Gaussian entangled states and multimode homodyne detectors is proposed. In general the multimode character of both the sources of entanglement and the homodyne detectors can cause a security break even for a perfect channel when trusted parties are unaware of the detection structure. Taking into account the multimode structure and potential leakage of information from a homodyne detector reduces the loss of security to some extent. We suggest the symmetrization of the multimode sources of entanglement as an efficient method allowing us to fully re…

We show that the full statistics of the two detectors outputs in a balanced homodyne detection setup involving a local oscillator in an ideal coherent state is experimentally accessible despite the excess noise existing in actual laser sources. This possibility is illustrated using phase randomized coherent states signals from which the statistics of Fock states can accurately be obtained. The experimental verification of the recently predicted [Kühn and Vogel, Phys. Rev. A, \textbf{98}, 013832 (2018)] two-detector correlation probability for Fock states is presented for states $\vert 1 \rangl…
We propose an innovative strategy to discriminate between two coherent states affected by either uniform or gaussian phase noise. The strategy is based on a homodyne-like detection scheme with photon-number-resolving detectors in the regime of low-intensity local oscillator. The experimental implementation of the detection scheme involves two hybrid photodetectors, whose outputs are used in post processing to calculate the shot-by-shot photon-number difference. The performance of this strategy is quantified in terms of the error probability in discriminating the noisy coherent signals as a fun…
We report a large area photo-diode based homodyne detector for free-space quantum coherent communication. The detector's performance is studied in terms of detection bandwidth and electronic noise for shot-noise limited quantum signal detection. Using large area photo-diodes increases signal collection efficiency from turbulent atmospheric channels, in comparison with typical fibre based free-space homodyne detectors. Under identical atmospheric turbulence and receiver aperture conditions, our homodyne detector based on 1mm diameter photo-diode experiences 0dB loss due to turbulence while a 10…
In this paper, we propose an experimentally viable scheme to enhance the sensitivity of force detection in a hybrid optomechanical setup assisted by squeezed vacuum injection, beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL). The scheme is based on a combination of the coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) strategy with a variational homodyne detection of the cavity output spectrum in which the phase of the local oscillator is optimized. In CQNC, realizing a negative-mass oscillator in the system leads to exact cancellation of the backaction noise from the mechanics due to destructive quantum inte…

Optical homodyne detection has been widely used in continuous-variable (CV) quantum information processing for measuring field quadrature values. In this paper we explore the possibility of operating a conjugate homodyne detection system in "photon counting" mode to implement discrete-variable (DV) quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. A conjugate homodyne detection system, which consists of a beam splitter followed by two optical homodyne detectors, can simultaneously measure a pair of conjugate quadratures X and P of the incoming quantum state. In classical electrodynamics, X^2 + P^2 is …
Optical satellite links open up new prospects for realizing quantum physical experiments over unprecedented length scales. We analyze and affirm the feasibility of detecting quantum squeezing in an optical mode with homodyne detection of only one bit resolution, as is found in satellites already in orbit. We show experimentally that, in combination with a coherent displacement, a binary homodyne detector can still detect quantum squeezing efficiently even under high loss. The sample overhead in comparison to non-discretized homodyne detection is merely a factor of 3.3.
Variable measurement operators enable the optimization of strategies for testing quantum properties and the preparation of a range of quantum states. Here, we experimentally implement a weak-field homodyne detector that can continuously tune between measuring photon numbers and field quadratures. We combine a quantum signal with a coherent state on a balanced beam splitter and detect light at both output ports using photon-number-resolving transition edge sensors. We observe that the discrete difference statistics converge to the quadrature distribution of the signal as we increase the coheren…
We put forward a hybrid quantum key distribution protocol based on coherent states, Gaussian modulation, and photon-number-resolving (PNR) detectors, and show that it may enhance the secret key generation rate (KGR) compared to homodyne-based schemes. Improvement in the KGR may be traced back to the dependence of the two-dimensional discrete output variable on both the input quadratures, thus overcoming the limitations of the original protocol. When reverse reconciliation is considered, the scheme based on PNR detectors outperforms the homodyne one both for individual and collective attacks. I…
Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has many practical advantages including compatibility with current optical communication technology. Implementation using heterodyne measurements is particularly attractive since it eliminates the need for active phase locking of the remote pair of local oscillators, but the full security of CV QKD with discrete modulation was only proved for a protocol using homodyne measurements. Here we propose an all-heterodyne CV-QKD protocol with binary modulation and prove its security against general attacks in the finite-key regime. Although replac…
We suggest and demonstrate a scheme to reconstruct the symmetric two-mode squeezed thermal states of spectral sideband modes from an optical parametric oscillator. The method is based on a single homodyne detector and active stabilization of the cavity. The measurement scheme have been successfully tested on different two-mode squeezed thermal states, ranging from uncorrelated coherent states to entangled states.
We present a scheme for quantum randomness certification based on quantum steering. The protocol is one-sided device independent, providing high security, but requires only states and measurements that are simple to realise on quantum optics platforms - entangled squeezed vacuum states and homodyne detection. This ease of implementation is demonstrated by certifying randomness in existing experimental data and implies that giga-hertz random bit rates should be attainable with current technology. Furthermore, the steering-based setting represents the closest to full device independence that can…
We study the sensitivity of phase estimation in a lossy Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) using two general, and practical, resources generated by a laser and a nonlinear optical medium with passive optimal elements, which are readily available in the laboratory: One is a two-mode separable coherent and squeezed vacuum state at a beam splitter and the other is a two-mode squeezed vacuum state. In view of the ultimate precision given by quantum Fisher information, we show that the two-mode squeezed vacuum state can achieve a lower bound of estimation error than the coherent and squeezed vacuum …
Discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with homodyne detection is widely recognized for its ease of implementation, efficiency with respect to error correction, and its compatibility with modern optical communication devices. However, recent studies report that the application of homodyne detection obtains poor tolerance to excess noise and insufficient transmission distance, hence seriously restricting the large-scale deployment of quantum secure communication networks. In this paper, we propose a homodyne detection protocol using the quadrature phase shift keying tec…
In this paper, we propose to use the decoy-state technique to improve the security of the quantum key distribution (QKD) systems based on homodyne detection against the photon number splitting (PNS) attack. The decoy-state technique is a powerful tool that can significantly boost the secure transmission range of the QKD systems. However it has not yet been applied to the systems that use coherent detection. After adapting this theory to the systems based on homodyne detection, we quantify the secure performance and transmission range of the resulting system.
