We present numerical results on the capacities of two-qubit unitary operations for creating entanglement and increasing the Holevo information of an ensemble. In all cases tested, the maximum values calculated for the capacities based on the Holevo information are close to the capacities based on the entanglement. This indicates that the capacities based on the Holevo information, which are very difficult to calculate, may be estimated from the capacities based upon the entanglement, which are relatively straightforward to calculate.
Unitary gates are an interesting resource for quantum communication in part because they are always invertible and are intrinsically bidirectional. This paper explores these two symmetries: time-reversal and exchange of Alice and Bob. We will present examples of unitary gates that exhibit dramatic separations between forward and backward capacities (even when the back communication is assisted by free entanglement) and between entanglement-assisted and unassisted capacities, among many others. Along the way, we will give a general time-reversal rule for relating the capacities of a unitary gat…
We consider interactions as bidirectional channels. We investigate the capacities for interaction Hamiltonians and nonlocal unitary gates to generate entanglement and transmit classical information. We give analytic expressions for the entanglement generating capacity and entanglement-assisted one-way classical communication capacity of interactions, and show that these quantities are additive, so that the asymptotic capacities equal the corresponding 1-shot capacities. We give general bounds on other capacities, discuss some examples, and conclude with some open questions.
We show that entangling capacities based on the Jamiolkowski isomorphism may be used to place lower bounds on the communication capacities of arbitrary bipartite unitaries. Therefore, for these definitions, the relations which have been previously shown for two-qubit unitaries also hold for arbitrary dimensions. These results are closely related to the theory of the entanglement-assisted capacity of channels. We also present more general methods for producing ensembles for communication from initial states for entanglement creation.
Classical capacity of unital qubit channels is well known, whereas that of nonunital qubit channels is not. We find lower and upper bounds on classical capacity of nonunital qubit channels by using a recently developed decomposition technique relating nonunital and unital positive qubit maps.
Entangling and disentangling capacities are the key manifestation of the nonlocal content of a quantum operation. A lot of effort has been put recently into investigating (dis)entangling capacities of unitary operations, but very little is known about capacities of non-unitary operations. Here we investigate (dis)entangling capacities of unital CPTP maps acting on two qubits.
By using the Holevo-Schumacher-Westmoreland (HSW) theorem and through solving eigenvalues of states out from the quantum noisy channels directly, or with the help of the Bloch sphere representation, or Stokes parametrization representation, we investigate the classical information capacities of some well-known quantum noisy channels.
We consider two capacity quantities associated with bipartite unitary gates: the entangling and the disentangling power. For two-qubit unitaries these two capacities are always the same. Here we prove that these capacities are different in general. We do so by constructing an explicit example of a qubit-qutrit unitary whose entangling power is maximal (2 ebits), but whose disentangling power is strictly less. A corollary is that there can be no unique ordering for unitary gates in terms of their ability to perform non-local tasks. Finally we show that in large dimensions, almost all bipartite …
Two-qubit operations may be characterized by their capacities for communication, both with and without free entanglement, and their capacity for creating entanglement. We establish a set of inequalities that give an ordering to the capacities of two-qubit unitary operations. Specifically, we show that the capacities for entanglement creation and bidirectional communication without entanglement assistance are at least as great as half the bidirectional communication capacity with entanglement assistance. In addition, we show that the bidirectional communication that can be performed using an en…
We show that intrinsic fluctuations in system control parameters impose limits on the ability of two-qubit (exchange) Hamiltonians to generate entanglement starting from mixed initial states. We find three classes for Gaussian and Laplacian fluctuations. For the Ising and XYZ models there are qualitatively distinct sharp entanglement-generation transitions, while the class of Heisenberg, XY, and XXZ Hamiltonians is capable of generating entanglement for any finite noise level. Our findings imply that exchange Hamiltonians are surprisingly robust in their ability to generate entanglement in the…
We characterize all maximally entangling bipartite unitary operators, acting on systems $A,B$ of arbitrary finite dimensions $d_A\le d_B$, when use of ancillary systems by both parties is allowed. Several useful and interesting consequences of this characterization are discussed, including an understanding of why the entangling and disentangling capacities of a given (maximally entangling) unitary can differ and a proof that these capacities must be equal when $d_A=d_B$.
We present an effcient experimental procedure that certifies non vanishing quantum capacities for qubit noisy channels. Our method is based on the use of a fixed bipartite entangled state, where the system qubit is sent to the channel input. A particular set of local measurements is performed at the channel output and the ancilla qubit mode, obtaining lower bounds to the quantum capacities for any unknown channel with no need of a quantum process tomography. The entangled qubits have a Bell state configuration and are encoded in photon polarization. The lower bounds are found by estimating the…
Two dual questions in quantum information theory are to determine the communication cost of simulating a bipartite unitary gate, and to determine their communication capacities. We present a bipartite unitary gate with two surprising properties: 1) simulating it with the assistance of unlimited EPR pairs requires far more communication than with a better choice of entangled state, and 2) its communication capacity is far lower than its capacity to create entanglement. This suggests that 1) unlimited EPR pairs are not the most general model of entanglement assistance for two-party communication…
We introduce a probabilistic version of the one-shot quantum dense coding protocol in both two- and multiport scenarios, and refer to it as conclusive quantum dense coding. Specifically, we analyze the corresponding capacities of two-qubit, two-qutrit, and three-qubit shared states. We identify cases where Pauli and generalized Pauli operators are not sufficient as encoders to attain the optimal one-shot conclusive quantum dense coding capacities. We find that there is a rich connection between the capacities, and the bipartite and multipartite entanglements of the shared state.
We investigate the quantum capacity of noisy quantum channels which can be represented by coupling a system to an effectively small environment. A capacity formula is derived for all cases where both system and environment are two-dimensional--including all extremal qubit channels. Similarly, for channels acting on higher dimensional systems we show that the capacity can be determined if the channel arises from a sufficiently small coupling to a qubit environment. Extensions to instances of channels with larger environment are provided and it is shown that bounds on the capacity with unconstra…
Operator entanglement of two-qubit joint unitary operations is revisited. Schmidt number is an important attribute of a two-qubit unitary operation, and may have connection with the entanglement measure of the unitary operator. We found the entanglement measure of two-qubit unitary operators is classified by the Schmidt number of the unitary operators. The exact relation between the operator entanglement and the parameters of the unitary operator is clarified too.
We study the local unitary equivalence for two and three-qubit mixed states by investigating the invariants under local unitary transformations. For two-qubit system, we prove that the determination of the local unitary equivalence of 2-qubits states only needs 14 or less invariants for arbitrary two-qubit states. Using the same method, we construct invariants for three-qubit mixed states. We prove that these invariants are sufficient to guarantee the LU equivalence of certain kind of three-qubit states. Also, we make a comparison with earlier works.
We present a complete set of local unitary invariants for generic multi-qubit systems which gives necessary and sufficient conditions for two states being local unitary equivalent. These invariants are canonical polynomial functions in terms of the generalized Bloch representation of the quantum states. In particular, we prove that there are at most 12 polynomial local unitary invariants for two-qubit states and at most 90 polynomials for three-qubit states. Comparison with Makhlin's 18 local unitary invariants is given for two-quibit systems.
A new form of local unitary (LU) transformation invariant is given for multi-qubit states . The general relation between tangle and the LU transformation invariant of pure three and four-qubit states is given. We find that the tangle actually is a special LU transformation invariant. Furthermore, the tangle is a important local unitary (LU) transformation invariant which is a nessesary condition for maximally multi-qubit entangled state.
We present computable criterion for completely classifying multi-qubit quantum states under local unitary operations. The criterion can be used to detect whether two quantum states in multi-qubit systems are local unitary equivalent or not. Once obtaining the positive answer, we are further able to compute the corresponding unitary operators precisely. Since the scheme is based on the mean values of some quantum mechanical observables, it supplies an experimental way to judge the local equivalence of quantum states.
We develop a unitary dependence theory to characterize the behaviors of quantum circuits and states in terms of how quantum gates manipulate qubits and determine their measurement probabilities. A qubit has dependence on a 1-qubit unitary gate if its measurement probabilities depend on the parameters of the gate. A 1-qubit unitary creates such a dependence onto the target qubit, and a CNOT gate copies all the dependences from the control qubit to the target qubit. The complete dependence picture of the output state details the connections qubits may have when being manipulated or measured. Com…
In this paper, we study time-optimal control problems related to system of two coupled qubits where the time scales involved in performing unitary transformations on each qubit are significantly different. In particular, we address the case where unitary transformations produced by evolutions of the coupling take much longer time as compared to the time required to produce unitary transformations on the first qubit but much shorter time as compared to the time to produce unitary transformations on the second qubit. We present a canonical decomposition of SU(4) in terms of the subgroup SU(2)xSU…
We consider a two-qubit unitary operation along with arbitrary local unitary operations acts on a two-qubit pure state, whose entanglement is C_0. We give the conditions that the final state can be maximally entangled and be non-entangled. When the final state can not be maximally entangled, we give the maximal entanglement C_max it can reach. When the final state can not be non-entangled, we give the minimal entanglement C_min it can reach. We think C_max and C_min represent the entanglement changing power of two-qubit unitary operations. According to this power we define an order of gates.
In this paper the geometry of two-qubit systems under local unitary group $SO(2)\otimes SU(2)$ is discussed. It is shown that the quaternionic conformal map intertwines between this local unitary subgroup of $Sp(2)$ and the quaternionic Möbius transformation which is rather a generalization of the results of Lee et al (2002 Quantum Inf. Process. 1 129).
By preparing an input state and measuring an observable for the output state, we can measure a quantum channel. Following the formulation given by Xiao et al., we study an uncertainty relation for ancilla-free measurements of random unitary channels acting on a qubit. We obtain an explicit formula and give a necessary and sufficient condition for this formula to be nontrivial.
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the LU-equivalence of two general (pure or mixed) $n$-qubit states as well as we determine the local unitary operators connecting them. Almost all relevant information is contained in the $1$-qubit reduced matrices of the multiqubit states under investigation Our technique relies on identifying {\it ab initio} all local symmetries and the corresponding local cyclic unitary operators. To derive the above conditions we use the reference forms of the multiqubit states whose definition requires the diagonalization of the 1-qubit reduced matrices. B…
Local unitary invariance and the notion of negativity fonts are used as the principle tools to construct four qubit invariants of degree 8, 12, and 24. A degree 8 polynomial invariant that is non-zero on pure four qubit states with four-body correlations and zero on all other states, is identified. Classification of four qubit states into seven major classes, using criterion based on the nature of correlations, is discussed.
We obtain local unitary invariant polynomials for N qubit quantum state from first principles. A basic unit of entanglement, referred to as negativity font, is defined as a two by two matrix of probability amplitudes that determines the negative eigen value of a four by four submatrix of partially transposed state operator. Transformation properties of determinants of negativity fonts under local unitary (LU) transformations are exploited to obtain multi qubit invariants written in terms of such determinants.
We give an algorithm allowing to construct bases of local unitary invariants of pure k-qubit states from the knowledge of polynomial covariants of the group of invertible local filtering operations. The simplest invariants obtained in this way are explicited and compared to various known entanglement measures. Complete sets of generators are obtained for up to four qubits, and the structure of the invariant algebras is discussed in detail.
We present a novel approach for studying the dynamics of a superconducting qubit in a cavity. We succeed in linearizing the Hamiltonian through the application of an appropriate unitary transformation followed by a rotating wave approximation (RWA). For certain values of the parameters involved, we show that it is possible to obtain a a Jaynes-Cummings type Hamiltonian. As an example, we show the existence of super-revivals for the qubit inversion.
We analyze random unitary evolution of the qubit within memory kernel approach. We provide sufficient conditions which guarantee that the corresponding memory kernel generates physically legitimate quantum evolution. Interestingly, we are able to recover several well known examples and generate new classes of nontrivial qubit evolution. Surprisingly, it turns out that quantum evolution with memory kernel generated by our approach gives rise to vanishing non-Markovianity measure based on the distinguishability of quantum states.
We study information transmission over a fully correlated amplitude damping channel acting on two qubits. We derive the single-shot classical channel capacity and show that entanglement is needed to achieve the channel best performance. We discuss the degradability properties of the channel and evaluate the quantum capacity for any value of the noise parameter. We finally compute the entanglement-assisted classical channel capacity.
The CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition is a generalization of the spectral decomposition of matrices to higher-order tensors. In this paper we use the CP decomposition to study unitary equivalence of higher order tensors and construct several invariants of local unitary equivalence for general higher order tensors. Based on this new method, we study the coefficient tensors of $3$-qubit states and obtain a necessary and sufficient criterion for local unitary equivalence of general tripartite states in terms of the CP decomposition. We also generalize this method to obtain some invariants of l…
We investigate the influence of dissipation and decoherence on quantum Darwinism by generalizing Zurek's original qubit model of decoherence and the establishment of pointer states (Zurek, Nature Physics 5, 181 - 188 (2009)). Our model allows for repeated multiple qubit-qubit couplings between system and environment which are described by randomly applied two-qubit quantum operations inducing entanglement, dissipation and dephasing. The resulting stationary qubit states of system and environment are investigated. They exhibit the intricate influence of entanglement generation, dissipation and …
We present a simple quantum circuit that allows for the universal and deterministic manipulation of the quantum state of confined harmonic oscillators. The scheme is based on the selective interactions of the referred oscillator with an auxiliary three-level system and a classical external driving source, and enables any unitary operations on Fock states, two-by-two. One circuit is equivalent to a single qubit unitary logical gate on Fock states qubits. Sequences of similar protocols allow for complete, deterministic and state-independent manipulation of the harmonic oscillator quantum state.
We study the optimization problem for remote one- and two-qubit state creation via a homogeneous spin-1/2 communication line using the local unitary transformations of the multi-qubit sender and extended receiver. We show that the maximal length of a communication line used for the needed state creation (the critical length) increases with an increase in the dimensionality of the sender and extended receiver. The model with the sender and extended receiver consisting of up to 10 nodes is used for the one-qubit state creation and we consider two particular states: the almost pure state and the …
We consider the mixed states of the bipartite quantum system with the first party a qubit and the second a qutrit. The group of local unitary transformations of the system, ignoring the overall phase factor, is the direct product G of SU(2) and SU(3). We compute the simply graded Poincare series of the algebra of G-invariant polynomial functions on the set of mixed states of the system, and construct several low degree invariants.
Upon entangling a spatial binary alternative of a photon with its polarization, one can use single photons to study arbitrary 2-qubit states. Sending the photon through a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, equipped with sets of wave plates that change the polarization, amounts to performing a unitary transformation on the 2-qubit state. We show that any desired unitary gate can be realized by a judicious choice of the parameters of the set-up and discuss a number of applications. They include the diagnosis of an unknown 2-qubit state, an optical Grover search, and the realization of a thought experi…
Local implementation of non-local quantum gates is necessary in a distributed quantum computer. Here, we demonstrate the non-local implementation of controlled-unitary quantum gates proposed by Eisert et al. (Phys Rev A 62:052317, 2000) using the five-qubit IBM quantum computer. We verify the fidelity and accuracy of the implementation through the techniques of quantum state and process tomographies.
This paper considers the control landscape of quantum transitions in multi-qubit systems driven by unitary transformations with single-qubit interaction terms. The two-qubit case is fully analyzed to reveal the features of the landscape including the nature of the absolute maximum and minimum, the saddle points and the absence of traps. The results permit calculating the Schmidt state starting from an arbitrary two-qubit state following the local gradient flow. The analysis of multi-qubit systems is more challenging, but the generalized Schmidt states may also be located by following the local…
We consider the effects of plane-wave states scattering off finite graphs, as an approach to implementing single-qubit unitary operations within the continuous-time quantum walk framework of universal quantum computation. Four semi-infinite tails are attached at arbitrary points of a given graph, representing the input and output registers of a single qubit. For a range of momentum eigenstates, we enumerate all of the graphs with up to $n=9$ vertices for which the scattering implements a single-qubit gate. As $n$ increases, the number of new unitary operations increases exponentially, and for …
We compare two approaches to non-Markovian quantum evolution: one based on the concept of divisible maps and the other one based on distinguishability of quantum states. The former concept is fully characterized in terms of local generator whereas it is in general not true for the latter one. A simple example of random unitary dynamics of a qubit shows the intricate difference between those approaches. Moreover, in this case both approaches are fully characterized in terms of local decoherence rates. As a byproduct it is shown that entropy might monotonically increase even for non-Markovian qu…
We prove that the entangling capacity of a two-qubit unitary operator without local ancillas, both with and without the restriction to initial product states, as quantified by the maximum attainable concurrence, is directly related to the distinguishability of a closely related pair of two-qubit unitary operators. These operators are the original operator transformed into its canonical form and the adjoint of this canonical form. The distinguishability of these operators is quantified by the minimum overlap of the output states over all possible input probe states. The entangling capacity of t…
Undoing a unitary operation, $i.e$. reversing its action, is the task of canceling the effects of a unitary evolution on a quantum system, and it may be easily achieved when the unitary is known. Given a unitary operation without any specific description, however, it is a hard and challenging task to realize the inverse operation. Recently, a universal quantum circuit has been proposed [Phys.Rev.Lett. 123, 210502 (2019)] to undo an arbitrary unknown $d$-dimensional unitary $U$ by implementing its inverse with a certain probability. In this letter, we report the experimental reversing of three …
Entanglement shared between the two ends of a quantum communication channel has been shown to be a useful resource in increasing both the quantum and classical capacities for these channels. The entanglement-assisted capacities were derived assuming an unlimited amount of shared entanglement per channel use. In this paper, bounds are derived on the minimum amount of entanglement required per use of a channel, in order to asymptotically achieve the capacity. This is achieved by introducing a class of entanglement-assisted quantum codes. Codes for classes of qubit channels are shown to achieve t…
The implementation of a high-fidelity two-qubit quantum logic gate remains an outstanding challenge for isolated solid-state qubits such as Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. In this work, we show that by driving pairs of NV centers to undergo photon scattering processes that flip their qubit state simultaneously, we can achieve a unitary two-qubit gate conditioned upon a single photon detection event. Further, by exploiting quantum interference between the optical transitions of the NV centers electronic states, we realize the existence of two special drive frequencies: a `magic' point…
Quantum discord is significant in analyzing quantum nonclassicality beyond the paradigm of entanglement. Presently we have explored the effectiveness of global unitary operations in manifesting quantum discord from a general two qubit zero discord state. Apart from the emergence of some obvious concepts such as absolute classical-quantum, absolute quantum-classical states, more interestingly, it is observed that set of states characterized by absoluteness contains only maximally mixed state. Consequently this marks the peak of effectiveness of global unitary operations in purview of manifestin…
With improved gate calibrations reducing unitary errors, we achieve a benchmarked single-qubit gate fidelity of 99.95% with superconducting qubits in a circuit quantum electrodynamics system. We present a method for distinguishing between unitary and non-unitary errors in quantum gates by interleaving repetitions of a target gate within a randomized benchmarking sequence. The benchmarking fidelity decays quadratically with the number of interleaved gates for unitary errors but linearly for non-unitary, allowing us to separate systematic coherent errors from decoherent effects. With this protoc…
We introduce a scheme for realizing arbitrary controlled-unitary operations in a two qubit system. If the 2 \times 2 unitary matrix is special unitary (has unit determinant), the controlled-unitary gate operation can be realized in a single pulse operation. The pulse, in our scheme, will constitute varying one of the parameters of the system between an arbitrarily maximum and a "calculated" minimum value. This parameter will constitute the variable parameter of the system while the other parameters, which include the coupling between the two qubits, will be treated as fixed parameters. The val…
We classify, up to local unitary equivalence, local unitary stabilizer Lie algebras for symmetric mixed states into six classes. These include the stabilizer types of the Werner states, the GHZ state and its generalizations, and Dicke states. For all but the zero algebra, we classify entanglement types (local unitary equivalence classes) of symmetric mixed states that have those stabilizers. We make use of the identification of symmetric density matrices with polynomials in three variables with real coefficients and apply the representation theory of SO(3) on this space of polynomials.
We present a protocol for transferring arbitrary continuous-variable quantum states into a few discrete-variable qubits and back. The protocol is deterministic and utilizes only two-mode Rabi-type interactions which are readily available in trapped-ion and superconducting circuit platforms. The inevitable errors caused by transferring an infinite-dimensional state into a finite-dimensional register are suppressed exponentially with the number of qubits. Furthermore, the encoded states exhibit robustness against noise, such as dephasing and amplitude damping, acting on the qubits. Our protocol …
We analyze the optimal basis for generating the maximum relative entropy of quantum coherence by an arbitrary gate on a two-qubit system. The optimal basis is not unique, and the high quantum coherence generating gates are also typically high entanglement generating ones and vice versa. However, the profile of the relative frequencies of Haar random unitaries generating different amounts of entanglement for a fixed amount of quantum coherence is different from the one in which the roles of entanglement and quantum coherence are reversed, although both follow the beta distribution.
We propose a new spin squeezing criterion for arbitrary multi-qubit states that is invariant under local unitary operations. We find that, for arbitrary pure two-qubit states, spin squeezing is equivalent to entanglement, and multi-qubit states are entangled if this new spin squeezing parameter is less than 1.
We construct $\ell $-spin-flipping matrices from the coefficient matrices of pure states of $n$ qubits and show that the $\ell $-spin-flipping matrices are congruent and unitary congruent whenever two pure states of $n$ qubits are SLOCC and LU equivalent, respectively. The congruence implies the invariance of ranks of the $\ell $-spin-flipping matrices under SLOCC and then permits a reduction of SLOCC classification of n qubits to calculation of ranks of the $\ell $-spin-flipping matrices. The unitary congruence implies the invariance of singular values of the $\ell $-spin-flipping matrices un…
We address the question of existence of private quantum channel for qubits encoded in polarization degrees of freedom of a photon, that remains secure even if multi-photon (instead of single-photon) pulse is emitted. We show that random unitary channel distributed according to SU(2) Haar measure has this property. Further we analyze the qubit unitary k-designs. We show they ensure security if the photons' parity of the source is guaranteed. Otherwise, the qubit unitary k-designs do not guarantee perfect security.
