We investigate the influence of dissipation and decoherence on quantum Darwinism by generalizing Zurek's original qubit model of decoherence and the establishment of pointer states (Zurek, Nature Physics 5, 181 - 188 (2009)). Our model allows for repeated multiple qubit-qubit couplings between system and environment which are described by randomly applied two-qubit quantum operations inducing entanglement, dissipation and dephasing. The resulting stationary qubit states of system and environment are investigated. They exhibit the intricate influence of entanglement generation, dissipation and dephasing on this characteristic quantum phenomenon.
We investigate the implications of quantum Darwinism in a composite quantum system with interacting constituents exhibiting a decoherence-free subspace. We consider a two-qubit system coupled to an $N$-qubit environment via a dephasing interaction. For excitation preserving interactions between the system qubits, an analytical expression for the dynamics is obtained. It demonstrates that part of the system Hilbert space redundantly proliferates its information to the environment, while the remaining subspace is decoupled and preserves clear non-classical signatures. For measurements performed …
The longitudinal coupling of a system to the bath usually induces the pure dephasing of the system. In this paper, we study the collective dephasing induced dissipation and decoherence in a coupled-qubit system with a common bath. It is shown that, compared with the case of the same system with independent baths, the interference between the dephasing processes of different qubits induced by the common bath significantly changes the dissipation of the system. For the system of two coupled qubits, the interference leads to a faster decoherence in the non-single-excitation subspaces and a slower…
We critically examine the role that correlations established between a system and fragments of its environment play in characterising the ensuing dynamics. We employ a class of dephasing models where the state of the initial environment represents a tunable degree of freedom that qualitatively and quantitatively affects the correlation profiles, but nevertheless results in the same reduced dynamics for the system. We apply recently developed tools for the characterisation of non-Markovianity to carefully assess the role that correlations, as quantified by the (quantum) Jensen-Shannon divergenc…
We apply reverse-engineering to find electromagnetic pulses that allow for the control of populations in quantum systems under dephasing and thermal noises. In particular, we discuss two-level systems given their importance in the description of several molecular systems as well as quantum computing. Such an investigation naturally finds applications in a multitude of physical situations involving the control of quantum systems. We present an analytical description of the pulse which solves a constrained dynamics where the initial and final populations are fixed a priori. This constrained dyna…
Transmon arrays are one of the most promising platforms for quantum information science. Despite being often considered simply as qubits, transmons are inherently quantum mechanical multilevel systems. Being experimentally controllable with high fidelity, the higher excited states beyond the qubit subspace provide an important resource for hardware-efficient many-body quantum simulations, quantum error correction, and quantum information protocols. Alas, dissipation and dephasing phenomena generated by couplings to various uncontrollable environments yield a practical limiting factor to their …
The fluctuation-dissipation relation is well known for the quantum open system with energy dissipation. In this paper a similar underlying relation is found between the bath fluctuation and the dephasing of the quantum open system, of which energy is conserved, but the information is leaking into the bath. To obtain this relation we revisit the universal, but simple dephasing model with quantum non-demolition interaction between the bath and the open system. Then we show that the decoherence factor describing the dephasing process is factorized into two parts, to indicate the two sources of de…
Understanding whether dissipation in an open quantum system is truly quantum is a question of both fundamental and practical interest. We consider n qubits subject to correlated Markovian dephasing and present a sufficient condition for when bath-induced dissipation can generate system entanglement and hence must be considered quantum. Surprisingly, we find that the presence or absence of time-reversal symmetry plays a crucial role: broken time-reversal symmetry is required for dissipative entanglement generation. Further, simply having nonzero bath susceptibilities is not enough for the dissi…
We analyze the stochastic evolution and dephasing of a qubit within the quantum jump (QJ) approach. It allows one to treat individual realizations of inelastic processes, and in this way it provides solutions, for instance, to problems in quantum thermodynamics and distributions in statistical mechanics. As a solvable example, we study a qubit in the weak dissipation limit, and demonstrate that dephasing and relaxation render the Jarzynski and Crooks fluctuation relations (FRs) of non-equilibrium thermodynamics intact. On the contrary, the standard two-measurement protocol, taking into account…
In this paper we evaluate the performance of two superadiabatic stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) protocols derived from Gaussian and sin-cos pulses, under dissipation and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise in the energy levels. We find that for small amplitudes of Stokes and pump pulses, the population transfer is mainly achieved directly through the counterdiabatic pulse, while for large amplitudes the conventional STIRAP path dominates. This kind of "hedging" leads to a remarkable robustness against dissipation in the lossy intermediate state. For small pulse amplitudes and increasing noise…
Dynamical decoupling as a quantum control strategy aims at suppressing quantum decoherence adopting the popular philosophy that the disorder in the unitary evolution of the open quantum system caused by environmental noises should be neutralized by a sequence of ordered or well-designed external operations acting on the system. This work studies the solution of quantum-state-diffusion equations by mixing two channels of environmental noises, i.e., relaxation (dissipation) and dephasing. It is interesting to find in two-level and three-level atomic systems that a non-Markovian relaxation or dis…
Dephasing and relaxation of the nuclear spins coupled to the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center during optical initialization and readout is an important issue for various applications of this hybrid quantum register. Here we present both an analytical description and a numerical simulation for this process, which agree reasonably with the experimental measurements. For the NV center under cyclic optical transition, our analytical formula not only provide a clear physics picture, but also allows controlling the nuclear spin dissipation by tuning an external magnetic field. For more general optical p…
The three-state Majorana model in the presence of dissipation is considered. Different models of system-environment interaction are explored, ranging from situation where dissipation is the main effect to regimes where dephasing is mainly produced. It is shown that the detrimental effects of the noise are stronger in the presence of dissipation than in the presence of dephasing. The role of temperature is also discussed.
The main idea of "Quantum Chaos" studies is that Quantum Mechanics introduces two energy scales into the study of chaotic systems: One is obviously the mean level spacing $Δ\propto\hbar^d$, where $d$ is the dimensionality; The other is $Δ_b\propto\hbar$, which is known as the non-universal energy scale, or as the bandwidth, or as the Thouless energy. Associated with these two energy scales are two special quantum-mechanical (QM) regimes in the theory of driven system. These are the QM adiabatic regime, and the QM non-perturbative regime respectively. Otherwise Fermi golden rule applies, and li…
There has been a recent upsurge of interest in the quantum properties of magnons for quantum information processing. An important issue is to examine the stability of quantum states of magnons against various relaxation and dephasing channels. Since the interaction of magnons in magnetic systems may fall in the ultra-strong and even deep-strong coupling regimes, the relaxation process of magnon states is quite different from the more common quantum optical systems. Here we study the relaxation and dephasing of magnons based on the Lindblad formalism and derive a generalized master equation tha…
Cavity and circuit QED study light-matter interaction at its most fundamental level. Yet, this interaction is most often neglected when considering the coupling of this system with an environment. In this paper, we show how this simplification, which leads to the standard quantum optics master equation, is at the root of unphysical effects. Including qubit relaxation and dephasing, and cavity relaxation, we derive a master equation that takes into account the qubit-resonator coupling. Special attention is given to the ultrastrong coupling regime, where the failure of the quantum optical master…
We examine the limits of applicability of a simple non-Hermitian model for exciton/plasmon interactions in the presence of dissipation and dephasing. The model can be used as an alternative to the more complete Lindblad density matrix approach and is computationally and conceptually simpler. We find that optical spectra in the linear regime can be adequately described by this approach. The model can fail, however, under continuous optical driving in some circumstances. In the case of two quantum dots or excitons interacting with a plasmon, the model can also describe coherences and entanglemen…
In this paper, effects of the regular measurements on a noisy channel has been investigated. The strategy introduced by A. Bayat, and Y. Omar [New J. Phys. 17, 103041 (2015)] is followed to suppress dephasing and dissipation effects in a noisy spin channel and generate long distance entanglement by global measurement on the channel. A regular global measurements performed on spin channel weakly coupled to the sender and receiver qubits via $XX$ interaction. This scheme is applied for the dephasing and dissipation in non-zero temperature processes separately and the results show that amounts of…
We study the physical implementation of the Photon Carnot engine (PCE) based on the cavity QED system [M. Scully et al, Science, \textbf{299}, 862 (2003)]. Here, we analyze two decoherence mechanisms for the more practical systems of PCE, the dissipation of photon field and the pure dephasing of the input atoms. As a result we find that (I) the PCE can work well to some extent even in the existence of the cavity loss (photon dissipation); and (II) the short-time atomic dephasing, which can destroy the PCE, is a fatal problem to be overcome.
Irreversible entropy production (IEP) plays an important role in quantum thermodynamic processes. Here we investigate the geometrical bounds of IEP in nonequilibrium thermodynamics by exemplifying a system coupled to a squeezed thermal bath subject to dissipation and dephasing, respectively. We find that the geometrical bounds of the IEP always shift in contrary way under dissipation and dephasing, where the lower and upper bounds turning to be tighter occurs in the situation of dephasing and dissipation, respectively. However, either under dissipation or under dephasing, we may reduce both th…
Fault-tolerant quantum computation with depolarization error often requires demanding error threshold and resource overhead. If the operations can maintain high noise bias -- dominated by dephasing error with small bit-flip error -- we can achieve hardware-efficient fault-tolerant quantum computation with a more favorable error threshold. Distinct from two-level physical systems, multi-level systems (such as harmonic oscillators) can achieve a desirable set of bias-preserving quantum operations while using continuous engineered dissipation or Hamiltonian protection to stabilize to the encoding…
We consider the problem of energy transport in a chain of coupled dissipative quantum systems in the presence of non-Markovian dephasing. We use a model of non-Markovianity which is experimentally realizable in the context of controlled quantum systems. We show that non-Markovian dephasing can significantly enhance quantum transport, and we characterize this phenomenon in terms of internal coupling strengths of the chain for some chain lengths. Finally, we show that the phenomenon of dephasing-assisted quantum transport is also enhanced in the non-Markovian scenario when compared to the Markov…
We consider protecting a Hadamard operation from independent dephasing, bit flipping, and dissipation. These environment-induced errors are represented by three uncorrelated reservoirs of thermalized bosons and we show that the protection is achievable through continuous dynamical decoupling. We find that, to decouple the Hadamard evolution from the environmental influence, we need a control field of higher frequency if the boson spectral density is super-ohmic than if it is ohmic. We also study the relevance of bit flipping and dissipation to the gate fidelity when it is protected from dephas…
Quantum systems interacting with environments tend to have their information lost from transmission through the correlations generated with the degrees of freedom of the environment. For situations where we have non- Markovian environments, the information contained in the environment may return to the system and such effect can be captured by non-Markovian witnesses. In the present work, we use a central qubit coupled to a spin chain with Ising interactions subject to a magnetic field, i.e., a central spin model, and solve the exact dynamics of a system subject to dephasing dynamics via Kraus…
We investigate the robustness of multiparty nonlocality under local decoherence, acting independently and equally on each subsystems. To be specific, we consider an N-qubit GHZ state under depolarization, dephasing, or dissipation channel, and tested the nonlocality by violation of Mermin-Klyshko inequality, which is one of Bell's inequalities for multi-qubit systems. The results show that the robustness of nonlocality increases with the number of qubits, and that the nonlocality of an N-qubit GHZ state with even N is extremely persistent against dephasing.
Creation of entangled states of quantum systems with low decoherence rates is a cornerstone in practical implementation of quantum computations. Processes of separate dephasing in each qubit in experimentally feasible systems is commonly accepted to destroy entanglement. In this work, we consider a system of two strongly coupled qubits that interact with dephasing reservoirs. We demonstrate that interaction with dephasing reservoirs can contribute to the formation of a long-lived mixed entangled state with nonzero concurrence. The weight of the subradiant state in this mixed state tends toward…
Enviroment - caused dissipation disrupts the hamiltonian evolution of all quantum systems not fully isolated from any bath. We propose and examine a feedback-control scheme to eliminate such dissipation, by tracking the free hamiltonian evolution. We determine a driving-field that maximizes the projection of the actual molecular system onto the freely propagated one. The evolution of a model two level system in a dephasing bath is followed, and the driving field that overcomes the decoherence is calculated. An implementation of the scheme in the laboratory using feedback control is suggested.
We propose a method to improve the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) via dissipative quantum dynamics, taking into account the dephasing effects. Fast and robust population transfer can be obtained with the scheme by the designed pulses and detuning, even though the initial state of the system is imperfect. With a concrete three-level system as an example, the influences of the imperfect initial state, variations in the control parameters, and various dissipation effects are discussed in detail. The numerical simulation shows that the scheme is insensitive to moderate fluctuations of…
Practical implementations of quantum technology are limited by unavoidable effects of decoherence and dissipation. With achieved experimental control for individual atoms and photons, more complex platforms composed by several units can be assembled enabling distinctive forms of dissipation and decoherence, in independent heat baths or collectively into a common bath, with dramatic consequences for the preservation of quantum coherence. The cross-over between these two regimes has been widely attributed in the literature to the system units being farther apart than the bath's correlation lengt…
Driven chaotic systems are of interest in mesoscopic physics, as well as in nuclear, atomic and molecular physics. Such systems [coordinates $(Q,P)$]$ tend to absorb energy. This irreversible effect is known as dissipation. "Driving" means that a parameter $x$ is changed in time. More generally, $x$ may be a dynamical variable. In such case the interaction of $(x,p)$ with the environmental degrees of freedom $(Q,P)$ leads to dephasing as well as to dissipation. We introduce a general framework for the analysis of dissipation and dephasing, and we clarify the tight connection to recent studies …
These lecture notes address an audience of physicists or mathematicians who have been exposed to a first course in quantum mechanics. We start with a brief discussion of the general "system-bath" paradigm of quantum dissipative systems, analyze in some detail the simplest example of "pure dephasing" of a two-level system, and review the basic concept of the density matrix. We then treat the general dissipative time-evolution, introducing completely positive maps, their relation to entanglement theory, and their Kraus decomposition. Restricting ourselves to Markovian evolution, we discuss the L…
We develop a theoretical framework to describe the scattering of photons against a two-level quantum emitter with arbitrary correlated dephasing noise. This is particularly relevant to waveguide-QED setups with solid-state emitters, such as superconducting qubits or quantum dots, which couple to complex dephasing environments in addition to the propagating photons along the waveguide. Combining input-output theory and stochastic methods, we predict the effect of correlated dephasing in single-photon transmission experiments with weak coherent inputs. We discuss homodyne detection and photon co…
The qubit (or a system of two quantum dots) has become a standard paradigm for studying quantum information processes. Our focus is Decoherence due to interaction of the qubit with its environment, leading to noise. We consider quantum noise generated by a dissipative quantum bath. A detailed comparative study with the results for a classical noise source such as generated by a telegraph process, enables us to set limits on the applicability of this process vis a vis its quantum counterpart, as well as lend handle on the parameters that can be tuned for analyzing decoherence. Both Ohmic and no…
We consider the reduced dynamics in a bipartite quantum system (consisting of a central system and an intermediate environment) coupled to a heat bath at finite temperature. To describe this situation, in the simplest possible -- yet physically meaningful way, we introduce the "depolarizing heat bath" as a new minimal dissipation model. We conjecture that at sufficiently strong dissipation, any other dissipation model implemented in the form of a Markovian quantum master equation will yield the same reduced dynamics of the central system, as the minimal model. To support this conjecture, we st…
We study the decoherence of Majorana modes of a fermion chain, where the fermions interact with their nearest neighbours. We investigate the effect of dissipation and dephasing on the Majorana modes of a fermionic chain. The dissipative and dephasing noises induce the non-parity- and parity-preserving transitions between the eigenstates of the system, respectively. Therefore, these two types of noises lead to the different decoherence mechanisms. In each type of noise, we discuss the low- and high-frequency regimes to describe the different environments. We numerically calculate the dissipatio…
The multistate Majorana model in the presence of dissipation and dephasing is considered. It is proven that increasing the Hilbert space dimension the system becomes more and more fragile to quantum noise. The impossibility to recast the problem in the form of a set of independent spin-$1/2$ problems because of the presence of the noise is pointed out.
We theoretically propose a biphoton entanglement-enhanced multidimensional spectroscopic technique as a probe for the dissipative polariton dynamics in the ultrafast regime. It is applied to the cavity-confined monomeric photosynthetic complex that represents a prototypical multi-site excitonic quantum aggregate. The proposed technique is shown to be particularly sensitive to inter-manifold polariton coherence between the two and one-excitation subspaces. It is demonstrated to be able to monitor the dynamical role of cavity-mediated excitonic correlations, and dephasing in the presence of phon…
In the field of quantum technology, nanomechanical oscillators offer a host of useful properties given their compact size, long lifetimes, and ability to detect force and motion. Their integration with superconducting quantum circuits shows promise for hardware-efficient computation architectures and error-correction protocols based on superpositions of mechanical coherent states. One limitation of this approach is decoherence processes affecting the mechanical oscillator. Of particular interest are two-level system (TLS) defects in the resonator host material, which have been widely studied i…
The quantum dynamics of two weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators is analytically and numerically investigated in the context of nonlinear dissipation. The latter facilitates the creation and preservation of non-classical steady states. Starting from a microscopic description of two oscillators individually interacting with their dissipative environments, it is found that in addition to energy relaxation, dephasing arises due to the mutual coupling. Using the negativity as an entanglement measure, it is shown that the coupling entangles the oscillators in the long-time limit. For finite tempera…
Hybrid quantum devices expand the tools and techniques available for quantum sensing in various fields. Here, we experimentally demonstrate quantum sensing of the steady-state magnon population in a magnetostatic mode of a ferrimagnetic crystal. Dispersively coupling the magnetostatic mode to a superconducting qubit allows the detection of magnons using Ramsey interferometry with a sensitivity on the order of $10^{-3}$ $\text{magnons}/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$. The protocol is based on dissipation as dephasing via fluctuations in the magnetostatic mode reduces the qubit coherence proportionally to the…
We study quantum dynamics of many-qubit systems strongly coupled to a quantized electromagnetic cavity field in the presence of decoherence and dissipation for both fermions and cavity photons, and taking into account the varying coupling strength of different qubits to the cavity field and the spread of their transition frequencies. Compact analytic solutions for time-dependent quantum state amplitudes and observables are derived for a broad class of open quantum systems in Lindblad approximation with the use of the stochastic Schroedinger equation approach. We show that depending on the init…
The effects of photon bunching and antibunching correspond to the classical and quantum features of the electromagnetic field, respectively. No direct evidence suggests whether these effects can be potentially related to quantum entanglement. Here we design a cavity quantum electrodynamics model with two atoms trapped in to demonstrate the connections between the steady-state photon statistics and the two-atom entanglement . It is found that within the weak dissipations and to some good approximation, the local maximal two-atom entanglements perfectly correspond to not only the quantum feature…
In chemical reactions, the interplay between coherent evolution and dissipation is central to determining key properties such as the rate and yield. Of particular interest are cases where two potential energy surfaces cross at features known as conical intersections (CIs), resulting in nonadiabatic dynamics that may promote ultrafast and highly efficient reactions when rovibrational damping is present. A prominent chemical reaction that involves a CI is the cis-trans isomerization reaction in rhodopsin, which is crucial to vision. CIs in real molecular systems are typically investigated via op…
We propose a scheme to entangle two mechanical nanocantilevers through indirect interactions mediated by a gas of ultra cold atoms. We envisage a system of nanocantilevers magnetically coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms and focus on studying the dark states of the system. These dark states are entangled states of the two nanocantilevers, with no coupling to the atomic condensate. In the absence of dissipation, the degree of entanglement is found to oscillate with time, while if dissipation is included, the system is found to relax to a statistical mixture of dark states which remai…

We develop a theory of adiabatic response for open systems governed by Lindblad evolutions. The theory determines the dependence of the response coefficients on the dephasing rates and allows for residual dissipation even when the ground state is protected by a spectral gap. We give quantum response a geometric interpretation in terms of Hilbert space projections: For a two level system and, more generally, for systems with suitable functional form of the dephasing, the dissipative and non-dissipative parts of the response are linked to a metric and to a symplectic form. The metric is the Fubi…
