Dissipation and decoherence, and the evolution from pure to mixed states in quantum physics are handled through master equations for the density matrix. Master equations such as the Lindblad equation preserve the trace of this matrix. Viewing them as first-order time-dependent operator equations for the elements of the density matrix, a unitary integration procedure can be adapted to solve for these matrix elements. A simple model for decoherence preserves the hermiticity of the density matrix. A single, classical Riccati equation is the only one requiring numerical handling to obtain a full solution of the quantum evolution. The procedure is general, valid for any number of levels, but is illustrated here for a three-level system with two driving fields. For various choices of the initial state, we study the evolution of the system as a function of the amplitudes, relative frequencies and phases of the driven fields, and of the strength of the decoherence. The monotonic growth of the entropy is followed as the system evolves from a pure to a mixed state. An example is provided by the $n=3$ states of the hydrogen atom in a time-dependent electric field, such degenerate manifolds affording an analytical solution.
In this paper we study the decoherence and purity of a driven solid-state qubit in the Ohmic bath by using the method based on the master equation. At first, instead of solving the master equation we investigate the coefficients of the equation which describe the shift in frequency, diffusive, decoherence, and so on. It is shown that one of the coefficients (we called it decoherence coefficient) is crucial to the decoherence of the qubit in the model. Then we investigate the evolution of the purity of the state in the model. From the analysis of the purity we see that the decoherence time of t…
By using the normal ordering method, we study the state evolution of an optically driven excitons in a quantum well immersed in a leaky cavity, which was introduced by Yu-xi Liu et.al. [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 63}, 033816 (2001)]. The influence of the external laser field on the quantum decoherence of a mesoscopically superposed states of the excitons is investigated. Our result shows that, thought the characteristic time of decoherence does not depend on the external field, the phase of the decoherence factor can be well controlled by adjusting the external parameters.
We study the problem of driving an unknown initial mixed quantum state onto a known pure state without using unitary transformations. This can be achieved, in an efficient manner, with the help of sequential measurements on at least two unbiased bases. However here we found that, when the system is affected by a decoherence mechanism, only one observable is required in order to achieve the same goal. In this way the decoherence can assist the process. We show that, depending on the sort of decoherence, the process can converge faster or slower than the method implemented by means of two comple…
We study dissipative tunneling in a double well potential that is driven close to a resonance between the lowest tunnel doublet and a singlet. While the coherent dynamics can be described well within a three-level approximation, dissipative transitions to levels outside the singlet and the doublet may play a crucial role. Moreover, such transitions can enhance the entropy production significantly.
Analysis of the effects of decoherence on the radiative and squeezing properties of a coherently driven two-level atom trapped in a resonant cavity applying the corresponding master equation is presented. The atomic dynamics as well as the squeezing and statistical properties of the emitted radiation are investigated. It is found that the atom stays in the lower energy level more often at steady state irrespective of the strength of the coherent radiation and thermal fluctuations entering the cavity. Moreover, a strong external coherent radiation results the splitting of the line of the emissi…
We solve the dynamics of an open quantum system where N strongly driven two-level atoms are equally coupled on resonance to a dissipative cavity mode. Analytical results are derived on decoherence, entanglement, purity, atomic correlations and cavity field mean photon number. We predict decoherence-free subspaces for the whole system and the N-qubit subsystem, the monitoring of quantum coherence and purity decay by atomic populations measurements, the conditional generation of atomic multi-partite entangled states and of cavity cat-like states. We show that the dynamics of atoms prepared in st…
Recent studies of the decoherence induced by the quantum nature of the laser field driving a two-state atom [J. Gea-Banacloche, Phys. Rev. A 65, 022308 (2002); S. J. van Enk and H. J. Kimble, Quantum Inf. and Comp. 2, 1 (2002)] have been questioned by Itano [W. M. Itano, Phys. Rev. A 68, 046301 (2003)] and the proposal made that all decoherence is due to spontaneous emission. We analyze the problem within the formalism of cascaded open quantum systems. Our conclusions agree with the Itano proposal. We show that the decoherence, nevertheless, may be divided into two parts--that due to forwards …
A general theory is presented for the treatment of decoherence of a multilevel quantum system (with many degrees of freedom) interacting with multi-bath reservoir and driven by ac fields. In this approach, the system is described by a reduced density operator and the multi-bath reservoir is characterized by a number of spectral densities. The reduced density operator is governed by the master equation in which the effect of ac driving fields and the leakage to non-computational states are included. The theory is applied to the study of decoherence of a two-dimensional (2D) SQUID flux qubit cou…
We propose the implementation of a strongly-driven one-atom laser, based on the off-resonant interaction of a three-level atom in $Λ$-configuration with a single cavity mode and three laser fields. We show that the system can be described equivalently by a two-level atom resonantly coupled to the cavity and driven by a strong effective coherent field. The effective dynamics can be solved exactly, including a thermal field bath, allowing an analytical description of field statistics and entanglement properties. We also show the possible generation of Schrödinger cat states for the whole atom-fi…
Quantum technology resorts to efficient utilization of quantum resources to realize technique innovation. The systems are controlled such that their states follow the desired manners to realize different quantum protocols. However, the decoherence caused by the system-environment interactions causes the states deviating from the desired manners. How to protect quantum resources under the coexistence of active control and passive decoherence is of significance. Recent studies have revealed that the decoherence is determined by the feature of the system-environment energy spectrum: Accompanying …
A deterministic scheme for generating a macroscopic superposition state of a nanomechanical resonator is proposed. The nonclassical state is generated through a suitably engineered dissipative dynamics exploiting the optomechanical quadratic interaction with a bichromatically driven optical cavity mode. The resulting driven dissipative dynamics can be employed for monitoring and testing the decoherence processes affecting the nanomechanical resonator under controlled conditions.
We introduce, for each state of a bosonic quantum field, its quadrature coherence scale (QCS), a measure of the range of its quadrature coherences. Under coupling to a thermal bath, the purity and QCS are shown to decrease on a time scale inversely proportional to the QCS squared. The states most fragile to decoherence are therefore those with quadrature coherences far from the diagonal. We further show a large QCS is difficult to measure since it induces small scale variations in the state's Wigner function. These two observations imply a large QCS constitutes a mark of "macroscopic coherence…
An eigenstate decoherence hypothesis states that each individual eigenstate of a large closed system is locally classical-like. We extend this hypothesis to account for a typically extremely short time scale of decoherence. The extension implies that nondiagonal matrix elements of certain operators - quantumness witnesses - are suppressed as long as the energy difference between corresponding eigenstates is smaller than the inverse decoherence time.
We discuss anomalous decoherence effects at zero and finite temperatures in driven coupled quantum spin systems. By numerical simulations of the quantum master equation, it is found that the entanglement of two coupled spin qubits exhibits a non-monotonic behaviour as a function of the noise strength. The effects of noise strength, the detuning and finite temperature of independent environments on the steady state entanglement are addressed in detail. Pumped by an external field drive, non-trivial steady states can be found, the steady state entanglement increases monotonically up to a maximum…
We study microwave-driven cooling in a superconducting flux qubit subjected to environment noises. For the weak decoherence, our analytical results agree well with the experimental observations near the degeneracy point and show that the microwave amplitude for optimal cooling should depend linearly on the dc flux detuning. With the decoherence increasing, more vibrational degrees of freedom couple in, making the ordinary cooling method less effective or even fail. We propose an improved cooling method, which can eliminate the perturbation of additional vibrational degrees of freedom hence kee…
We propose a new mechanism to generate a dc current of particles at zero bias based on a noble interplay between coherence and decoherence. We show that a dc current arises if the transport process in one direction is maintained coherent while the process in the opposite direction is incoherent. We provide possible implementations of the idea using an atomic Michelson and an atomic Aharonov-Bohm interferometer.
I show that the decoherence in a system of $N$ degenerate two--level atoms interacting with a bosonic heat bath is for any number of atoms $N$ governed by a generalized Hamming distance (called ``decoherence metric'') between the superposed quantum states, with a time--dependent metric tensor that is specific for the heat bath. The decoherence metric allows for the complete characterization of the decoherence of all possible superpositions of many-particle states, and can be applied to minimize the over-all decoherence in a quantum memory. For qubits which are far apart, the decoherence is give…
We study decoherence of a field-driven qubit in the presence of environmental noises. For a general qubit, we find that driving, whether on-resonance or off-resonance, alters the qubit decoherence rates (including dissipation and pure dephasing), allowing both blue and red sideband contributions from the reservoir. Depending on the noise spectral density, driving field detuning and driving field phase shift, the qubit decoherence rates could be either accelerated or reduced. We apply our general theory to the system of an electron spin qubit that is confined in a quantum dot and driven by an i…
The interaction of (two-level) Rydberg atoms with dissipative QED cavity fields can be described classically or quantum mechanically, even for very low temperatures and mean number of photons, provided the damping constant is large enough. We investigate the quantum-classical border, the entanglement and decoherence of an analytically solvable model, analog to the atom-cavity system, in which the atom (field) is represented by a (driven and damped) harmonic oscillator. The maximum value of entanglement is shown to depend on the initial state and the dissipation-rate to coupling-constant ratio.…
The decoherence of mixed electron-nuclear spin qubits is a topic of great current importance, but understanding is still lacking: while important decoherence mechanisms for spin qubits arise from quantum spin bath environments with slow decay of correlations, the only analytical framework for explaining observed sharp variations of decoherence times with magnetic field is based on the suppression of classical noise. Here we obtain a general expression for decoherence times of the central spin system which exposes significant differences between quantum-bath decoherence and decoherence by class…
In this paper, we study the suppression of adiabatic decoherence in a three-level atom with $Λ$ configuration using bang-bang control technique. We have given the decoupling bang-bang operation group, and programmed a sequence of periodic radio frequency twinborn pulses to realize the control process. Moreover, we have studied the process with non-ideal situation and established the condition for efficient suppression of adiabatic decoherence.
Decay parameter of coherence and population inversion are calculated from the master equation of a two level atom tunneling through a squeezed vacuum. Using those parameters, the timescales for decoherence and zeno effect are calculated in the weak measurement scheme. By comparing those timescales, a certain condition has been found for sustainable coherent dynamics.
We studied the dispersive dissipation of denegerate-level atom interacting with a single linearly-polarized mode field. It is found that the degeneracy of the atomic level affects the dissipation bahavior of the system as well as the subsystems. The degeneracy of the atomic level augment the periods of entanglement and increase the degree of the maxima statistical mixture states.
We study systematically the non-Markovian decoherence dynamics of a dissipative two-level system, i.e., the so-called spin-boson model. It is interesting to find that the decoherence tends to be inhibited with the increase of the coupling strength between the system and the reservoir, which is contrary to the common recognition that a stronger coupling always induces a severer decoherence. This is attributed to the occurrence of a quantum phase transition (QPT). The relationship between this QPT and conventional delocalized-localized QPT is also discussed. Our result suggests a useful control …
We study the scaling of the decoherence factor of a qubit (spin-1/2) using the central spin model in which the central spin (qubit) is globally coupled to a transverse XY spin chain. The aim here is to study the non-equilibrium generation of decoherence when the spin chain is driven across (along) quantum critical points (lines) and derive the scaling of the decoherence factor in terms of the driving rate and some of the exponents associated with the quantum critical points. Our studies show that the scaling of logarithm of decoherence factor is identical to that of the defect density in the f…
Minimizing the effect of decoherence on a quantum register must be a central part of any strategy to realize scalable quantum information processing. Apart from the strength of the coupling to the environment, the decoherence rate is determined by the the system level structure and by the spectral composition of the noise trace that the environment generates. Here, we discuss a relatively simple model that allows us to study these different effects quantitatively in detail. We evaluate the effect that the perturbation has on an NMR system while it performs a Grover search algorithm.
By use of external periodic driving sources, we demonstrate the possibility of controlling the coherent as well as the decoherent dynamics of a two-level atom placed in a lossy cavity. The control of the coherent dynamics is elucidated for the phenomenon of coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT), i.e., the coherent dynamics of a driven two-level atom in a quantum superposition state can be brought practically to a complete standstill. We study this phenomenon for different initial preparations of the two-level atom. We then proceed to investigate the decoherence originating from the interacti…
We study the interaction of a two-level atom and two fields, one of them classical. We obtain an effective Hamiltonian for this system by using a method recently introduced that produces a small rotation to the Hamiltonian that allows to neglect some terms in the rotated Hamiltonian. Then we solve a variation of the Schrödinger equation that models decoherence as the system evolves through intrinsic mechanisms beyond conventional quantum mechanics rather than dissipative interaction with an environment.
We study the quantum-jump-based feedback control on the entanglement shared between two qubits with one of them subject to decoherence, while the other qubit is under the control. This situation is very relevant to a quantum system consisting of nuclear and electron spins in solid states. The possibility to prolong the coherence time of the dissipative qubit is also explored. Numerical simulations show that the quantum-jump-based feedback control can improve the entanglement between the qubits and prolong the coherence time for the qubit subject directly to decoherence.
We investigate the time evolution of a superposition of macroscopically distinct quantum states in a system of two-level atoms interacting with a thermal environment of photon modes. We show that the atomic coherent states are robust against decoherence, therefore we call their superpositions atomic Schrödinger cat states. The initial fast regime of the time evolution is associated with the process of decoherence, and it is directed towards the statistical mixture of the constituent coherent states of the original state for most of the initial conditions. However, certain superpositions, calle…
We study, in the paradigm of open quantum systems, the dynamics of quantum coherence of a static polarizable two-level atom which is coupled with a thermal bath of fluctuating electromagnetic field in the absence and presence of boundaries. The purpose is to find the conditions under which the decoherence can be inhibited effectively. We find that without boundaries, quantum coherence of the two-level atom inevitably decreases due to the effect of thermal bath. However, the quantum decoherence, in the presence of a boundary, could be effectively inhibited when the atom is transversely polariza…
We consider a macroscopic quantum system in a tilted double-well potential. By solving Hamiltonian equation, we obtain tunneling probabilities which contain oscillation effects. To show how one can decide between quantum mechanics and the implications of macrorealism assumption, a given form of Leggett-Garg inequality is used. The violation of this inequality occurs for a broader range of decoherence effects, compared to previous results obtained for two-level systems.
Two-photon processes that involve different sub-levels of the ground state of an atom, are highly sensitive to depopulation and decoherence within the ground state. For example, the spectral width of electromagnetically induced transparency resonances in $Λ-$type system, are strongly affected by the ground state depopulation and decoherence rates. We present a direct measurement of decay rates between hyperfine and Zeeman sub-levels in the ground state of $^{87}$Rb vapor. Similar to the relaxation-in-the-dark technique, pumping lasers are used to pre-align the atomic vapor in a well defined qu…
Reducing decoherence is an essential step toward realizing general-purpose quantum computers beyond the present noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. To this end, dynamical decoupling (DD) approaches in which external fields are applied to qubits are often adopted. We numerically study DD using a two-level model system (qubit) under the influence of Markovian decoherence by using quantum optimal control theory with slightly modified settings, in which the physical objective is to maximally create and maintain a specified superposition state in a specified control period. An optima…
Dissipation and decoherence, and the evolution from pure to mixed states in quantum physics are handled through master equations for the density matrix. By embedding elements of this matrix in a higher-dimensional Liouville-Bloch equation, the methods of unitary integration are adapted to solve for the density matrix as a function of time, including the non-unitary effects of dissipation and decoherence. The input requires only solutions of classical, initial value time-dependent equations. Results are illustrated for a damped driven two-level system.

We analyze a system of two qubits embedded in two different environments. The qubits are coupled to each other and driven on-resonance by two external classical sources. In the secular limit, we obtain exact analytical results for the evolution of the system for several classes of two-qubit mixed initial states. For Werner states we show that the decay of entanglement does not depend on coupling. For other initial states with ``{\sf X}\rq\rq -type density matrices we find that the sudden death time displays a rich dependence on the coupling energy and state parameters due to the existence of p…
We examine the conditions in favor and necessity of a realistic multileveled description of a decohering quantum system. Under these conditions approximate techniques to simplify a multileveled system by its first two levels is unreliable and a realistic multilevel description in the formulation of decoherence is unavoidable. In this regard, our first crucial observation is that, the validity of the two level approximation of a multileveled system is not controlled purely by {\it sufficiently low temperatures}. We demonstrate using three different environmental spectral models that the type of…
Decoherence-free subspaces (DFS) in systems of dipole-dipole interacting multi-level atoms are investigated theoretically. It is shown that the collective state space of two dipole-dipole interacting four-level atoms contains a four-dimensional DFS. We describe a method that allows to populate the antisymmetric states of the DFS by means of a laser field, without the need of a field gradient between the two atoms. We identify these antisymmetric states as long-lived entangled states. Further, we show that any single-qubit operation between two states of the DFS can be induced by means of a mic…
A unified theory is given of dynamically modified decay and decoherence of field-driven multilevel multipartite entangled states that are weakly coupled to zero-temperature baths or undergo random phase fluctuations. The theory allows for arbitrary local differences in their coupling to the environment. Due to such differences, the optimal driving-field modulation to ensure maximal fidelity is found to substantially differ from conventional ``Bang-Bang'' or $π$-phase flips of the single-qubit evolution.
We derive and analyze the Born-Markov master equation for a quantum harmonic oscillator interacting with a bath of independent two-level systems. This hitherto virtually unexplored model plays a fundamental role as one of the four "canonical" system-environment models for decoherence and dissipation. To investigate the influence of further couplings of the environmental spins to a dissipative bath, we also derive the master equation for a harmonic oscillator interacting with a single spin coupled to a bosonic bath. Our models are experimentally motivated by quantum-electromechanical systems an…
Based on the non-autonomous quantum master equation, we investigate the dissipative and decoherence properties of the two-level atom system interacting with the environment of thermal quantum radiation fields. For this system, by a novel algebraic dynamic method, the dynamical symmetry of the system is found, the quantum master equation is converted into a Schrödinger-like equation and the non-Hermitian rate (quantum Liouville) operator of the master equation is expressed as a linear function of the dynamical u(2) generators. Furthermore, the integrability of the non-autonomous master equation…
In this paper, we present a theoretical description to the quantum coherence and decoherence phenomena of energy transfer in photosynthesis observed in a recent experiment [see Science 316, 1462 (2007)]. As a successive two-color laser pulses with selected frequencies cast on a sample of the photosynthetic purple bacterium Rb. sphaeroides two resonant excitations of electrons in chromophores can be generated. However, this effective two-level subsystem will interact with its protein environment and decoherence is inevitable. We describe this subsystem coupled with its environment as a dynamica…
The equations of motion for the molecular rotation are derived for vibrationally cold dimers that are polarized by off-resonant laser light. It is shown that, by eliminating electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom, a quantum master equation for the reduced rotational density operator can be obtained. The coherent rotational dynamics is caused by stimulated Raman transitions, whereas spontaneous Raman transitions lead to decoherence in the motion of the quantized angular momentum. As an example the molecular dynamics for the optical Kerr effect is chosen, revealing decoherence and heating…
We present a scheme to drive a finite-dimensional quantum system into the decoherence-free subspaces(DFS) by Lyapunov control. Control fields are established by Lyapunov function. This proposal works well for both closed and open quantum systems, with replacing the DFS by desired subspaces for closed systems. An example which consists of a four-level system with three degenerate states driven by three lasers is presented to gain further insight of the scheme, numerical simulations for the dynamics of the system are performed and the results are good.
Quantum Brownian oscillator model (QBM), in the Fock-space representation, can be viewed as a multi-level spin-boson model. At sufficiently low temperature, the oscillator degrees of freedom are dynamically reduced to the lowest two levels and the system behaves effectively as a two-level (E2L) spin-boson model (SBM) in this limit. We discuss the physical mechanism of level reduction and analyze the behavior of E2L-SBM from the QBM solutions. The availability of close solutions for the QBM enables us to study the non-Markovian features of decoherence and leakage in a SBM in the non-perturbativ…
Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have become an important tool for quantum technologies. All of these applications rely on long coherence times of electron and nuclear spins associated with these centers. Here, we study the energy level anti-crossings of an NV center in diamond coupled to a first-shell 13C nuclear spin in a small static magnetic field. These level anti-crossings occur for specific orientations of the static magnetic field due to the strong non-secular components of the Hamiltonian. At these orientations we observe decoherence-free subspaces, where the electron spin coh…
We present the design and characterization of a three-Josephson-junction superconducting loop circuit with three large shunt capacitors. Used as a qubit, the circuit shows long energy-relaxation times, of the order of 40 ${ \unicode[Times]{x3BC}}$s and a spin-echo dephasing time of 9.4 ${ \unicode[Times]{x3BC}}$s. The circuit has high anharmonicity, of 2$π$$\times$3.69 GHz. We extract the multilevel relaxation and dephasing rates of the circuit used as a qutrit and discuss the possible sources for the decoherence. The high anharmonicity allows for fast qubit control with nanosecond-range gate …
During recent years, dynamical decoupling (DD) has gained relevance as a tool for manipulating quantum systems and extracting information from them. This is particularly relevant for spins involved in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), where DD sequences can be used to prolong quantum coherences, or for selectively couple/decouple the effects imposed by random environmental fluctuations. In this Letter, we show that one can exploit these concepts in order to selectively recouple diffusion processes in restricted spaces. The ensuing method provides a novel tool to measure restriction lengths in …
Three different levels of noisy quantum schemes modeling are considered: vectors, density matrices and Choi-Jamiolkowski related states. The implementations for personal computers and supercomputers are described, and the corresponding results are shown. For the level of density matrices, we present the technique of the fixed rank approximation and show some analytical estimates of the fidelity level.
In this paper we detail some results advanced in a recent letter [Prado et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102 073008 (2009)] showing how to engineer reservoirs for two-level systems at absolute zero by means of a time-dependent master equation leading to a nonstationary superposition equilibrium state. We also present a general recipe showing how to build nonadiabatic coherent evolutions of a fermionic system interacting with a bosonic mode and investigate the influence of thermal reservoirs at finite temperature on the fidelity of the protected superposition state. Our analytical results are supported…
We study the dynamics of a two-level quantum system interacting with an external environment that takes the form of an XY spin chain in the presence of an external magnetic field. While the presence of the bath itself can enhance the transition probability from the lower level to the upper level of the system, we show that this noise-assisted phenomenon is sensitive to a change of the quantum phase of the environment. The derivative of the transition probability displays a maximum in correspondence with the critical value of the applied field both in the case of isotropic and anisotropic chain…
We study a kind of geometric phases for entangled quantum systems, and particularly a spin driven by a magnetic field and entangled with another spin. The new kind of geometric phase is based on an analogy between open quantum systems and dissipative quantum systems which uses a C\ast-module structure. We show that the system presents from the viewpoint of their geometric phases, two behaviours. The first one is identical to the behaviour of an isolated spin driven by a magnetic field, as the problem originally treated by Berry. The second one is specific to the decoherence process. The gauge …
In this paper we investigate non-Markovian evolution of a two-level system (qubit) in a bosonic bath under influence of an external classical fluctuating environment. The interaction with the bath has the Lorentzian spectral density, and the fluctuating environment (stochastic field) is represented by a set of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Each of the subenvironments of the composite environment is able to induce non-Markovian dynamics of the two-level system. By means of the numerically exact method of hierarchical equations of motion, we study dependence of the steady states of the two-level…
The coherent behavior of the single electron and single nuclear spins of a defect center in diamond and a 13C nucleus in its vicinity, respectively, are investigated. The energy levels associated with the hyperfine coupling of the electron spin of the defect center to the 13C nuclear spin are analyzed. Methods of magnetic resonance together with optical readout of single defect centers have been applied in order to observe the coherent dynamics of the electron and nuclear spins. Long coherence times, in the order of microseconds for electron spins and tens of microseconds for nuclear spins, re…
