The robustness of entanglement results of Vidal and Tarrach considered the problem whereby an entangled state is mixed with a separable state so that the overall state becomes non-entangled. In general it is known that there are also cases when entangled states are mixed with other entangled states and where the sum is separable. In this paper, we treat the more general case where entangled states can be mixed with any states so that the resulting mixture is unentangled. It is found that entangled pure states for this generalized case have the same robustness as the restricted case of Vidal and Tarrach.
We propose a simple geometrical approach for finding the robustness of entanglement for Bell decomposable states of 2 otimes 2 quantum systems. It is shown that the robustness of entanglement is equal to the concurrence. We also present an analytical expression for two separable states that wipe out all entanglement of these states. Finally the random robustness of these states is also obtained.
The robustness of multipartite entanglement of systems undergoing decoherence is of central importance to the area of quantum information. Its characterization depends however on the measure used to quantify entanglement and on how one partitions the system. Here we show that the unambiguous assessment of the robustness of multipartite entanglement is obtained by considering the loss of functionality in terms of two communication tasks, namely the splitting of information between many parties and the teleportation of states.
The recently developed Kraus representation for bosonic Gaussian channels is employed to study analytically the robustness of non-Gaussian entanglement against evolution under noisy attenuator and amplifier environments, and compare it with the robustness of Gaussian entanglement. Our results show that some non-Gaussian states with one ebit of entanglement are more robust than all Gaussian states, even the ones with arbitrarily large entanglement, a conclusion of direct consequence to the recent conjecture by Allegra et al. [PRL, 105, 100503 (2010)].
The robustness properties of bipartite entanglement in systems of N bosons distributed in M different modes are analyzed using a definition of separability based on commuting algebras of observables, a natural choice when dealing with identical particles. Within this framework, expressions for the robustness and generalized robustness of entanglement can be explicitly given for large classes of boson states: their entanglement content results in general much more stable than that of distinguishable particles states. Using these results, the geometrical structure of the space of N boson states …
We investigate the robustness of genuine multiparticle entanglement under decoherence. We consider different kinds of entangled three- and four-qubit states as well as random pure states. For amplitude damping noise, we find that the W-type states are most robust, while other states are not more robust than generic states. For phase damping noise the GHZ state is the most robust state, and for depolarizing noise several states are significantly more robust than random states.
We investigate the relation between the entanglement and the robustness of a multipartite system to a depolarization noise. We find that the robustness of a two-qubit system in an arbitrary pure state depends completely on its entanglement. However, this is not always true in a three-qubit system. There is a residual effect on the robustness of a three-qubit system in an arbitrary superposition of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state and W state. Its entanglement determines the trend of its robustness. However, there is a splitting on its robustness under the same entanglement. Its robustness not…
We show that the usefulness of a state as an activator in teleportation protocols is equivalent to the robustness of its entanglement to noise. The robustness of entanglement of a bi-partite state is linked to the maximum increase in the the fidelity of teleportation of any other state when the former is used as an extra resource. On the one hand, this connection gives an operational meaning to the robustness of entanglement. On the other hand, it shows that the activation capability - which has a central role as an operational way of quantifying bound entangled states - can be estimated exper…
We study robustness of genuine multipartite entanglement for a system of three qubits under collective dephasing. Using a computable entanglement monotone for multipartite systems, we found that almost every state is quite robust under this type of decoherence. We analyze random states and weighted graph states at infinity and found all of them to be genuinely entangled.
By considering the decomposition of a generic two qubit density matrix presented by Wootters [W. K. Wootters, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80} 2245 (1998)], the robustness of entanglement for any mixed state of two qubit systems is obtained algebraically. It is shown that the robustness of entanglement is proportional to concurrence and in Bell decomposable density matrices it is equal to the concurrence. We also give an analytic expression for two separable states which wipe out all entanglement of these states. Since thus obtained robustness is function of the norm of the vectors in the decompositi…
Single-photon entanglement is one of the primary resources for quantum networks, including quantum repeater architectures. Such entanglement can be revealed with only local homodyne measurements through the entanglement witness presented in [Morin et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 130401 (2013)]. Here, we provide an extended analysis of this witness by introducing analytical bounds and by reporting measurements confirming its great robustness with regard to losses. This study highlights the potential of optical hybrid methods, where discrete entanglement is characterized through continuous-variable…
We study the entanglement between the 2D vibrational motion and two ground state hyperfine levels of a trapped ion, Under particular conditions this entanglement depends on the parity of the total initial vibrational quanta. We study the robustness of this quantum coherence effect with respect to the presence of non-dissipative sources of decoherence, and of an imperfect initial state preparation.
In the quest of completely describing entanglement in the general case of a finite number of parties sharing a physical system of finite dimensional Hilbert space a new entanglement magnitude is introduced for its pure and mixed states: robustness. It corresponds to the minimal amount of mixing with locally prepared states which washes out all entanglement. It quantifies in a sense the endurence of entanglement against noise and jamming. Its properties are studied comprehensively. Analytical expressions for the robustness are given for pure states of binary systems, and analytical bounds for m…
Properties of the max- relative entropy of entanglement are investigated, and its significance as an upper bound to the one shot rate for perfect entanglement dilution, under a particular class of quantum operations, is discussed. It is shown that it is in fact equal to another known entanglement monotone, namely the log robustness. It is known that the latter is not asymptotically continuous and it is not known whether it is weakly additive. However, by suitably modifying the max- relative entropy of entanglement we obtain a quantity which is seen to satisfy both these properties. In fact, th…
How common is large-scale entanglement in nature? As a first step towards addressing this question, we study the robustness of multi-party entanglement under local decoherence, modeled by partially depolarizing channels acting independently on each subsystem. Surprisingly, we find that n-qubit GHZ entanglement can stand more than 55 % local depolarization in the limit of n going to infinity, and that GHZ states are more robust than other generic states of 3 and 4 qubits. We also study spin-squeezed states in the limit n going to infinity and find that they too can stand considerable local depo…
We study the robustness of multipartite entanglement of the ground state of the one-dimensional spin 1/2 XY model with a transverse magnetic field in the presence of thermal excitations, by investigating a threshold temperature, below which the thermal state is guaranteed to be entangled. We obtain the threshold temperature based on the geometric measure of entanglement of the ground state. The threshold temperature reflects three characteristic lines in the phase diagram of the correlation function. Our approach reveals a region where multipartite entanglement at zero temperature is high but …
We study the robustness of the GHZ (or ``cat'') class of multi-partite states under decoherence. The noise model is described by a general completely positive map for qubits independently coupled to the environment. In particular, the robustness of N-party entanglement is studied in the large N limit when (a) the number of spatially separated subsystems is fixed but the size of each subsystem becomes large (b) the size of the subsystems is fixed while their number becomes arbitrarily large. We obtain conditions for entanglement in these two cases. Among our other results, we show that the pari…
We propose a scheme to generate robust stationary continuous-variable entanglement in optomechanical systems, based on geometrical nonlinearity that occurs for large mechanical displacements. Such nonlinearity is often used to correct the dynamics of the systems in the strong coupling regime. It appears that geometrical nonlinearity enhances the entanglement and shifts its maximum towards high detuning values. Using the experimental parameters, we find that such a scheme generates a very robust entanglement against thermal decoherence even at room temperature. Our results show that geometrical…
When some of the parties of a multipartite entangled pure state are lost, the question arises whether the residual mixed state is also entangled, in which case the initial entangled pure state is said to be robust against particle loss. In this paper, we investigate this entanglement robustness for $N$-qubit pure states. We identify exhaustively all entangled states that are fragile, i.e., not robust, with respect to the loss of any single qubit of the system. We also study the entanglement robustness properties of symmetric states and put these properties in the perspective of the classificat…
The main goal of this paper is to provide a connection between the generalized robustness of entanglement ($R_g$) and the geometric measure of entanglement ($E_{GME}$). First, we show that the generalized robustness is always higher than or equal to the geometric measure. Then we find a tighter lower bound to $R_g(ρ)$ based only on the purity of $ρ$ and its maximal overlap to a separable state. As we will see it is also possible to express this lower bound in terms of $E_{GME}$.
In general the calculation of robustness of entanglement for the mixed entangled quantum states is rather difficult to handle analytically. Using the the convex semi-definite programming method, the robustness of entanglement of some mixed entangled quantum states such as: $2\otimes 2$ Bell decomposable (BD) states, a generic two qubit state in Wootters basis, iso-concurrence decomposable states, $2\otimes 3$ Bell decomposable states, $d\otimes d$ Werner and isotropic states, a one parameter $3\otimes 3$ state and finally multi partite isotropic state, is calculated exactly, where thus obtaine…
We show that two related measures of k-coherence, called the standard and generalized robustness of k-coherence, are equal to each other when restricted to pure states. As a direct application of the result, we establish an equivalence between two analogous measures of Schmidt rank k-entanglement for all pure states. This answers conjectures raised in the literature regarding the evaluation of the quantifiers, and facilitates an efficient quantification of pure-state resources by introducing computable closed-form expressions for the two measures.
Trace decreasing dynamical maps are as physical as trace preserving ones; however, they are much less studied. Here we overview how the quantum Sinkhorn theorem can be successfully applied to find a two-qubit entangled state which has the strongest robustness against local noises and losses of quantum information carriers. We solve a practically relevant problem of finding an optimal initial encoding to distribute entangled polarized qubits though communication lines with polarization dependent losses and extra depolarizing noise. The longest entanglement lifetime is shown to be attainable wit…
The extremality of Gaussian states is exploited to show that Gaussian states are the most robust, among all possible bipartite continuous-variable states at fixed energy, against disentanglement due to noisy evolutions in Markovian Gaussian channels involving dissipation and thermal hopping. This proves a conjecture raised recently in [M. Allegra, P. Giorda, and M. G. A. Paris, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 100503 (2010)], providing a rigorous validation of the conclusions of that work. The problem of identifying continuous variable states with maximum resilience to entanglement damping in more …
We address the problem of entanglement protection against surrounding noise by a procedure suitably exploiting spatial indistinguishability of identical subsystems. To this purpose, we take two initially separated and entangled identical qubits interacting with two independent noisy environments. Three typical models of environments are considered: amplitude damping channel, phase damping channel and depolarizing channel. After the interaction, we deform the wave functions of the two qubits to make them spatially overlap before performing spatially localized operations and classical communicat…
We present an unifying approach to the quantification of entanglement based on entanglement witnesses, which includes several already established entanglement measures such as the negativity, the concurrence and the robustness of entanglement. We then introduce an infinite family of new entanglement quantifiers, having as its limits the best separable approximation measure and the generalized robustness. Gaussian states, states with symmetry, states constrained to super-selection rules and states composed of indistinguishable particles are studied under the view of the witnessed entanglement. …
The quantum dynamics of two entangled two-level atoms initially in extended Werner-like (EWL) states is studied. Each of the two atoms is located within an isolated and dissipative cavity. If the interaction time of atoms and cavities is not very long, the amount of quantum discord and entanglement between two atoms decreases as the system evolves. The sudden death of quantum discord and entanglement of two atoms occurs within a short interaction time. However, after a long interaction time, quantum discord and entanglement of two atoms could be partially preserved due to the long-lived nature…
The separability of the spatial modes of a charged particle in a Penning trap in the presence of an environment is studied by means of the positive partial transpose (PPT) criterion. Assuming a weak Markovian environment, described by linear Lindblad operators, our results strongly suggest that the environmental coupling of the axial and cyclotron degrees of freedom does not lead to entanglement at experimentally realistic temperatures. We therefore argue that, apart from unavoidable decoherence, the presence of such an environment does not alter the effectiveness of recently suggested quantum…
Adding the maximally mixed state with some weight to the entanglement system leads to disentanglement of the latter. For each predefined entangled state there exists a minimal value of this weight for which the system loses its entanglement properties. These values were proposed to be used as a quantitative measure of entanglement called robustness [G. Vidal and R. Tarrach, Phys. Rev. A 59, 141 (1999)]. Using the concurrence, we propose the derivation of this measure for the system of two-qubit. Namely, for a two-qubit pure state, an exact expression of robustness is obtained. Finally, in the …
We calculate the dissipative dynamics of two-qubit quantum discord under Markovian environments. We analyze various dissipative channels such as dephasing, depolarizing, and generalized amplitude damping, assuming independent perturbation, in which each qubit is coupled to its own channel. Choosing initial conditions that manifest the so-called sudden death of entanglement, we compare the dynamics of entanglement with that of quantum discord. We show that in all cases where entanglement suddenly disappears, quantum discord vanishes only in the asymptotic limit, behaving similarly to individual…
We investigate the dynamics of entanglement and quantum discord of two qubits in liquid state homonuclear NMR. Applying a phenomenological description for NMR under relaxation process, and taking a group of typical parameters of NMR, we show that when a zero initial state $|00> $ experiences a relaxation process, its entanglement disappears completely after a sequence of so-called sudden deaths and revivals, while the quantum discord retains remarkable values after a sequence of oscillations. That is to say, the quantum discord is more robust than entanglement.
Entanglement is a crucial resource for quantum information processing, and so protocols to generate high fidelity entangled states on various hardware platforms are in demand. While spin chains have been extensively studied to generate entanglement, graph structures also have such potential; however, only a few classes of graphs have been explored for this specific task. In this paper, we apply a particular coupling scheme involving two different coupling strengths to a graph of two interconnected $3\times3$ square graphs such that it effectively contains three defects. We show how this struct…
We study the problem of optimal preparation of a bipartite entangled state, which remains entangled the longest time under action of local qubit noises. We show that for unital noises such a state is always maximally entangled, whereas for nonunital noises, it is not. We develop a decomposition technique relating nonunital and unital qubit channels, based on which we find the explicit form of the ultimately robust state for general local noises. We illustrate our findings by amplitude damping processes at finite temperature, for which the ultimately robust state remains entangled up to two tim…
We experimentally investigate the robustness of maximal and non-maximal Time-Bin entangled photons over distances up to 11 km. The entanglement is determined by controllable parameters and in all cases is shown to be robust, in that the photons maintain their degree of entanglement after transmission.
In this article the robustness of tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states is investigated against Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (i.e. DM) interaction. We consider a closed system of three qubits and an environmental qubit. The environmental qubit interacts with any one of the three qubits through DM interaction. The tripartite system is initially prepared in GHZ and W states respectively. The composite four qubits system evolve with unitary dynamics. We detach the environmental qubit by tracing out from four qubits and profound impact of DM interaction is studied on the initial entan…
Quantum steering refers to correlations that can be classified as intermediate between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. Every state exhibiting Bell nonlocality exhibits also quantum steering and every state exhibiting quantum steering is also entangled. In low dimensional cases similar hierarchical relations have been observed between the temporal counterparts of these correlations. Here, we study the hierarchy of such temporal correlations for a general multilevel quantum system. We demonstrate that the same hierarchy holds for two definitions of state over time. In order to compare differe…
The dynamics of a pair of coupled harmonic oscillators in separate or common thermal environments is studied, focusing on different indicators of quantumness, such as entanglement, twin oscillators correlations and quantum discord. We compare their decay under the effect of dissipation and show, through a phase diagram, that entanglement is more likely to survive asymptotically than twin oscillators correlations.
We consider a finite one-dimensional Heisenberg XYZ spin chain under the influence of dissipative Lindblad environment obeying the Born-Markovian constrain in presence of an external magnetic field. We apply both closed and open boundary conditions at zero and finite temperature. We present an exact numerical solution for the Lindblad master equation of the system in the Liouville space. we find that, in the free spin chain (in absence of any environment), the entanglement at all ranges evolve in time in a non-uniform oscillatory form that changes significantly depending on the initial state, …
Quantum entangled states have shown distinguished features beyond any classical state. Many methods like quantum state tomography have been presented to verify entanglement. In this work, we aim to identify unknown entanglements with partial information of the state space by developing a nonlinear entanglement witness. The witness consists of a generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger-like paradox expressed by Pauli observables, and a nonlinear inequality expressed by density matrix elements. First, we verify unknown bipartite entanglements and study the robustness of entanglement witnesses aga…
We show that every entangled state provides an advantage in bi- and multi-channel discrimination that singles out its degree of entanglement, quantified in terms of its Schmidt number and of the corresponding robustness measures.
In this article, we study the dynamics of quantum correlation measures such as entanglement and measurement-induced nonlocality (MIN). Starting from an arbitrary Bell diagonal mixed states under Markovian local noise such as bit-phase flip, depolarizing and generalized amplitude damping channel, we provide the decays of the entanglement measured by concurrence and quantum correlation captured by different forms of MIN (trace distance, Hilbert-Schmidt norm and relative entropy) as a function of the decoherence parameters. The effect of local noises on the dynamical behaviors of quantum correlat…
The geometric measure, the logarithmic robustness and the relative entropy of entanglement are proved to be equal for a stabilizer quantum codeword. The entanglement upper and lower bounds are determined with the generators of code. The entanglement of dual-containing CSS codes, Gottesman codes and the related codes are given. An iterative algorithm is developed to determine the exact value of the entanglement when the two bounds are not equal.
We investigate the decay of entanglement, due to decoherence, of multi-qubit systems that are initially prepared in highly (in some cases maximally) entangled states. We assume that during the decoherence processes each qubit of the system interacts with its own, independent environment. We determine, for systems with a small number of qubits and for various decoherence channels, the initial states exhibiting the most robust entanglement. We also consider a restricted version of this robustness optimization problem, only involving states equivalent under local unitary transformations to the |G…
We study maximal bipartite entanglement in valence-bond states and show that the average bipartite entanglement $E_v^2$, between a sub-system of two spins and the rest of the system, can be maximized through a homogenized superposition of the valence-bond states. Our derived maximal $E_v^2$ rapidly increases with system size and saturates at its maximum allowed value. We also demonstrate that our maximal $E^2_v$ states are ground states of an infinite range Heisenberg model (IRHM) and represent a new class of resonating-valence-bond (RVB) states. The entangled RVB states produced from our IRHM…
It is demonstrated that for the entanglement-based version of the Bennett-Brassard (BB84) quantum key distribution protocol, Alice and Bob share provable entanglement if and only if the estimated qubit error rate is below 25% or above 75%. In view of the intimate relation between entanglement and security, this result sheds also new light on the unconditional security of the BB84 protocol in its original prepare-and-measure form. In particular, it indicates that for small qubit error rates 25% is the ultimate upper security bound for any prepare-and-measure BB84-type QKD protocol. On the contr…
Subtle quantum properties offer exciting new prospects in optical communications. Quantum entanglement enables the secure exchange of cryptographic keys and the distribution of quantum information by teleportation. Entangled bright beams of light attract increasing interest for such tasks, since they enable the employment of well-established classical communications techniques. However, quantum resources are fragile and undergo decoherence by interaction with the environment. The unavoidable losses in the communication channel can lead to a complete destruction of useful quantum properties -- …
