We extend to arbitrarily coupled pairs of qubits (two-state quantum systems) and qutrits (three-state quantum systems) our earlier study (quant-ph/0207181), which was concerned with the simplest instance of entangled quantum systems, pairs of qubits. As in that analysis -- again on the basis of numerical (quasi-Monte Carlo) integration results, but now in a still higher-dimensional space (35-d vs. 15-d) -- we examine a conjecture that the Bures/SD (statistical distinguishability) probability that arbitrarily paired qubits and qutrits are separable (unentangled) has a simple exact value, u/(v Pi^3)= >.00124706, where u = 2^20 3^3 5 7 and v = 19 23 29 31 37 41 43 (the product of consecutive primes). This is considerably less than the conjectured value of the Bures/SD probability, 8/(11 Pi^2) = 0736881, in the qubit-qubit case. Both of these conjectures, in turn, rely upon ones to the effect that the SD volumes of separable states assume certain remarkable forms, involving "primorial" numbers. We also estimate the SD area of the boundary of separable qubit-qutrit states, and provide preliminary calculations of the Bures/SD probability of separability in the general qubit-qubit-qubit and qutrit-qutrit cases.
We use the linear programming algorithm introduced by Akulin et al. [V. M. Akulin, G. A. Kabatiansky, and A. Mandilara, Phys. Rev. A 92, 042322 (2015)] to perform best separable approximation on two-qutrit random density matrices. We combine the numerical results with theoretical methods in order to generate random representative families of positive partial transposed bound entangled (BE) states and analyze their properties. Our results are disclosing that for the two-qutrit system the BE states have negligible volume and that these form tiny `islands' sporadically distributed over the surfac…
Entanglement is the resource to overcome the restriction of operations to Local Operations assisted by Classical Communication (LOCC). The Maximally Entangled Set (MES) of states is the minimal set of n-partite pure states with the property that any truly n-partite entangled pure state can be obtained deterministically via LOCC from some state in this set. Hence, this set contains the most useful states for applications. In this work we characterize the MES for generic three qutrit states. Moreover, we analyze which generic three qutrit states are reachable (and convertible) under LOCC transfo…
Classifying states as entangled or separable is a highly challenging task, while it is also one of the foundations of quantum information processing theory. This task is higly nontrivial even for relatively simple cases, such as two-qutrit Bell-diagonal states, i.e., mixture of nine mutually orthogonal maximally entangled states. In this article we apply the Gilbert algorithm to revise previously obtained results for this class. In particular we use ``cartography of entanglement'' to argue that most states left in [Hiesmayr, B. C. {\em Scientific Reports} {\bf 11}, 19739 (2021)] as unknown to …
Paralleling our recent computationally-intensive work for the case N=4 (quant-ph/0308037), we undertake the task for N=6 of computing to high numerical accuracy, the formulas of Sommers and Zyczkowski (quant-ph/0304041) for the (N^2-1)-dimensional volume and (N^2-2)-dimensional hyperarea of the (separable and nonseparable) N x N density matrices, based on the Bures (minimal monotone) metric. At the same time, we estimate the unknown volumes and hyperareas based on a number of other monotone metrics of interest. Additionally, we estimate -- but with perhaps unavoidably diminished accuracy -- al…
We compare the classification as entangled or separable of Bell diagonal bipartite qudits with positive partial transposition (PPT) and their properties for different dimensions. For dimension $d \geq 3$, a form of entanglement exists that is hard to detect and called bound entanglement due to the fact that such entangled states cannot be used for entanglement distillation. Up to this date, no efficient solution is known to differentiate bound entangled from separable states. We address and compare this problem named separability problem for a family of bipartite Bell diagonal qudits with spec…
With a probability of success of $95 \%$ we solve the separability problem for Bell diagonal qutrit states with positive partial transposition (PPT). The separability problem, i.e. distinguishing separable and entangled states, generally lacks an efficient solution due to the existence of bound entangled states. In contrast to free entangled states that can be used for entanglement distillation via local operations and classical communication, these states cannot be detected by the Peres-Horodecki criterion or PPT criterion. We analyze a large family of bipartite qutrit states that can be sepa…
The question of the generation of random mixed states is discussed, aiming for the computation of probabilistic characteristics of composite finite dimensional quantum systems. Particularly, we consider the generation of the random Hilbert-Schmidt and Bures ensembles of qubit and qutrit pairs and compute the corresponding probabilities to find a separable state among the states of a fixed rank.
We investigate the possibility of deriving analytical formulas for the 15-dimensional separable volumes, in terms of any of a number of metrics of interest (Hilbert-Schmidt [HS], Bures,...), of the two-qubit (four-level) systems. This would appear to require 15-fold symbolic integrations over a complicated convex body (defined by both separability and feasibility constraints). The associated 15-dimensional integrands -- in terms of the Tilma-Byrd-Sudarshan Euler-angle-based parameterization of the 4 x 4 density matrices ρ(math-ph/0202002) -- would be the products of 12-dimensional Haar measure…
We study the connection between the Hilbert-Schmidt measure of entanglement (that is the minimal distance of an entangled state to the set of separable states) and entanglement witness in terms of a generalized Bell inequality which distinguishes between entangled and separable states. A method for checking the nearest separable state to a given entangled one is presented. We illustrate the general results by considering isotropic states, in particular 2-qubit and 2-qutrit states -- and their generalizations to arbitrary dimensions -- where we calculate the optimal entanglement witnesses expli…

With the same seven billion well-distributed (``low-discrepancy'') sample points, w…
Geometric relations between separable and entangled two-qubit and two-qutrit quantum information states are studied. To characterize entanglement of two qubit states, we establish a relation between reduced density matrix and the concurrence. For the rebit states, the geometrical meaning of concurrence as double area of a parallelogram is found and for generic qubit states it is expressed by determinant of the complex Hermitian inner product metric, where reduced density matrix coincides with the inner product metric. In the case of generic two-qutrit state, for reduced density matrix we find …
A multipartite quantum state is entangled if it is not separable. Quantum entanglement plays a fundamental role in many applications of quantum information theory, such as quantum teleportation. Stochastic local quantum operations and classical communication (SLOCC) cannot essentially change quantum entanglement without destroying it. Therefore, entanglement can be classified by dividing quantum states into equivalence classes, where two states are equivalent if each can be converted into the other by SLOCC. Properties of this classification, especially in the case of non two-dimensional quant…
We study the correlation structure of separable and classical states in 2x2- and 2x3-dimensional quantum systems with fixed spectra. Even for such simple systems the maximal correlation - as measured by mutual information - over the set of unitarily accessible separable states is highly non-trivial to compute; however for the 2x2 case a particular class of spectra admits full analysis and allows us to contrast classical states with more general separable states. We analyse a particular entropic partial order on the set of spectra and prove for the qubit-qutrit case that this partial order alon…
We obtain formulas (bot. p. 12)--including $\frac{2}{121}$ and $\frac{4 \left(242 \sqrt{3} π-1311\right)}{9801}$--for the eight atoms (Fig. 11), summing to 1, which span a 256-dimensional three-set (P, S, PPT) entanglement-probability boolean algebra for the two-qutrit Hiesmayr-Loffler states. PPT denotes positive partial transpose, while P and S provide the Li-Qiao necessary and}sufficient conditions for entanglement. The constraints ensuring entanglement are $s> \frac{16}{9} \approx 1.7777$ and $p> \frac{2^{27}}{3^{18} \cdot 7^{15} \cdot13} \approx 5.61324 \cdot 10^{-15}$. Here, $s$ is the s…
We show that the length of a qubit-qutrit separable state is equal to the max(r,s), where r is the rank of the state and s is the rank of its partial transpose. We refer to the ordered pair (r,s) as the birank of this state. We also construct examples of qubit-qutrit separable states of any feasible birank (r,s). We determine the closure of the set of normalized two-qutrit entangled states of rank four having positive partial transpose (PPT). The boundary of this set consists of all separable states of length at most four. We prove that the length of any qubit-qudit separable state of birank (…

This paper explores the role of a priori knowledge in the optimization of quantum information processing by investigating optimum unambiguous discrimination problems for both the qubit and qutrit states. In general, a priori knowledge in optimum unambiguous discrimination problems can be classed into two types: a priori knowledge of discriminated states themselves and a priori probabilities of preparing the states. It is clarified that whether a priori probabilities of preparing discriminated states are available or not, what type of discriminators one should design just depends on what kind o…
In a number of previous studies, we have investigated the use of the volume element of the Bures (minimal monotone) metric -- identically, one-fourth of the statistical distinguishability (SD) metric -- as a natural measure over the (n^2-1)-dimensional convex set of n x n density matrices. This has led us for the cases n = 4 and 6 to estimates of the prior (Bures/SD) probabilities that qubit-qubit and qubit-qutrit pairs are separable. Here, we extend this work from such bipartite systems to the tripartite "laboratory'' quantum systems possessing U x U x U symmetry recently constructed by Eggel…
We study the distinguishability of multipartite quantum states by separable operations. We first present a necessary and sufficient condition for a finite set of orthogonal quantum states to be distinguishable by separable operations. An analytical version of this condition is derived for the case of $(D-1)$ pure states, where $D$ is the total dimension of the state space under consideration. A number of interesting consequences of this result are then carefully investigated. Remarkably, we show there exists a large class of $2\otimes 2$ separable operations not being realizable by local opera…
We list in increasing order -- 1/3, 3/8, 2/5, 135 pi/1024, 16/(3 pi^2), 3 pi/16, 5/8, 105 pi/512, 2 - 435 pi/1024, 11/16, 1 -- a number of exact two-qubit Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) separability probabilities, we are able to compute. Each probability corresponds to a specific scenario -- a class of 4 x 4 density matrices (rho) with an m-subset (m<6) of its six off-diagonal pairs of symmetrically located entries set to zero. Initially, we consider only scenarios in which the (6-m) non-nullified pairs are real, but then permit them to be complex (as well as quaternionic) in nature also. The general an…
Classification of entanglement in multipartite quantum systems is an open problem solved so far only for bipartite systems and for systems composed of three and four qubits. We propose here a coarse-grained classification of entanglement in systems consisting of $N$ subsystems with an arbitrary number of internal levels each, based on properties of orthogonal arrays with $N$ columns. In particular, we investigate in detail a subset of highly entangled pure states which contains all states defining maximum distance separable codes. To illustrate the methods presented, we analyze systems of four…
Milz and Strunz ({\it J. Phys. A}: {\bf{48}} [2015] 035306) recently studied the probabilities that two-qubit and qubit-qutrit states, randomly generated with respect to Hilbert-Schmidt (Euclidean/flat) measure, are separable. They concluded that in both cases, the separability probabilities (apparently exactly $\frac{8}{33}$ in the two-qubit scenario) hold {\it constant} over the Bloch radii ($r$) of the single-qubit subsystems, jumping to 1 at the pure state boundaries ($r=1$). Here, firstly, we present evidence that in the qubit-qutrit case, the separability probability is uniformly distrib…
In a previous study (quant-ph/9911058), several remarkably simple exact results were found, in certain specialized m-dimensional scenarios (m<5), for the a priori probability that a pair of qubits is unentangled/separable. The measure used was the volume element of the Bures metric (identically one-fourth the statistical distinguishability [SD] metric). Here, making use of a newly-developed (Euler angle) parameterization of the 4 x 4 density matrices (math-ph/0202002), we extend the analysis to the complete 15-dimensional convex set (C) of arbitrarily paired qubits -- the total SD volume of wh…
Zyczkowski, Horodecki, Sanpera, and Lewenstein (ZHSL) recently proposed a ``natural measure'' on the N-dimensional quantum systems (quant-ph/9804024), but expressed surprise when it led them to conclude that for N = 2 x 2, disentangled (separable) systems are more probable (0.632) in nature than entangled ones. We contend, however, that ZHSL's (rejected) intuition has, in fact, a sound theoretical basis, and that the a priori probability of disentangled 2 x 2 systems should more properly be viewed as (considerably) less than 0.5. We arrive at this conclusion in two quite distinct ways, the fir…
In a previous study (quant-ph/0207181), we formulated a conjecture that arbitrarily coupled qubits (describable by 4 x 4 density matrices) are separable with an a priori probability of 8/(11 π^2) = 0.0736881. For this purpose, we employed the normalized volume element of the Bures (minimal monotone) metric as a probability distribution over the fifteen-dimensional convex set of 4 x 4 density matrices. Here, we provide further/independent (quasi-Monte Carlo numerical integration) evidence of a stronger nature (giving an estimate of 0.0736858 vs. 0.0737012 previously) for this conjecture. Additi…
For any unitarily invariant convex function F on the states of a composite quantum system which isolates the trace there is a critical constant C such that F(w)<= C for a state w implies that w is not entangled; and for any possible D > C there are entangled states v with F(v)=D. Upper- and lower bounds on C are given. The critical values of some F's for qubit/qubit and qubit/qutrit bipartite systems are computed. Simple conditions on the spectrum of a state guaranteeing separability are obtained. It is shown that the thermal equilbrium states specified by any Hamiltonian of an arbitrary compo…
The probability that a generic real, complex or quaternionic two-qubit state is separable can be considered to be the sum of three contributions. One is from those states that are absolutely separable, that is those (which can not be entangled by unitary transformations) for which the maximal concurrence over spectral orbits (C_{max}) is zero. The other two contributions are from the states for which C_{max} in [0,1/2], and for which C_{max} in [1/2,1]. We have previously (arXiv:0805.0267) found exact formulas for the absolutely separable contributions in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt metric ov…
We implement a procedure-based on the Wishart-Laguerre distribution-recently outlined by {Ż}yczkowski and Khvedelidze, Rogojin and Abgaryan, for the generation of random (complex or real) $N \times N$ density matrices of rank $k \leq N$ with respect to Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) measure. In the complex case, one commences with a Ginibre matrix $A$ of dimensions $k \times k+ 2 (N-k)$, while for a real scenario, one employs a Ginibre matrix $B$ of dimensions $k \times k+1+ 2 (N-k)$. Then, the $k \times k$ product $A A^{\dagger}$ or $B B^T$ is diagonalized-padded with zeros to size $N \times N$-and rot…
One of the most important problems in quantum information is the separability problem, which asks whether a given quantum state is separable. We investigate multipartite states of rank at most four which are PPT (i.e., all their partial transposes are positive semidefinite). We show that any PPT state of rank two or three is separable and has length at most four. For separable states of rank four, we show that they have length at most six. It is six only for some qubit-qutrit or multiqubit states. It turns out that any PPT entangled state of rank four is necessarily supported on a 3x3 or a 2x2…
In previous studies, we have explored the ansatz that the volume elements of the Bures metrics over quantum systems might serve as prior distributions, in analogy to the (classical) Bayesian role of the volume elements ("Jeffreys' priors") of Fisher information metrics. Continuing this work, we obtain exact Bures probabilities that the members of certain low-dimensional subsets of the fifteen-dimensional convex set of 4 x 4 density matrices are separable or classically correlated. The main analytical tools employed are symbolic integration and a formula of Dittmann (quant-ph/9908044) for Bures…

Quantum technologies require methods for preparing and manipulating entangled multiparticle states. However, the problem of determining whether a given quantum state is entangled or separable is known to be an NP-hard problem in general, and even the task of detecting entanglement breakdown for a given class of quantum states is difficult. In this work, we develop an approach for revealing entanglement breakdown using a machine learning technique, which is known as 'learning by confusion'. We consider a family of quantum states, which is parameterized such that there is a single critical value…
