We investigate how the dynamical production of quantum entanglement for weakly coupled, composite quantum systems is influenced by the chaotic dynamics of the corresponding classical system, using coupled kicked tops. The linear entropy for the subsystem (a kicked top) is employed as a measure of entanglement. A perturbative formula for the entanglement production rate is derived. The formula contains a correlation function that can be evaluated only from the information of uncoupled tops. Using this expression and the assumption that the correlation function decays exponentially which is plausible for chaotic tops, it is shown that {\it the increment of the strength of chaos does not enhance the production rate of entanglement} when the coupling is weak enough and the subsystems (kicked tops) are strongly chaotic. The result is confirmed by numerical experiments. The perturbative approach is also applied to a weakly chaotic region, where tori and chaotic sea coexist in the corresponding classical phase space, to reexamine a recent numerical study that suggests an intimate relationship between the linear stability of the corresponding classical trajectory and the entanglement production rate.
We study global entangling properties of the system of coupled kicked tops testing various hypotheses and predictions concerning entanglement in quantum chaotic systems. In order to analyze the averaged initial entanglement production rate and the averaged asymptotic entanglement different ensembles of initial product states are evolved. Two different ensembles with natural probability distribution are considered: product states of independent spin-coherent states and product states of arbitrary states. It appears that the choice of either of these ensembles results in significantly different …
In a two-mode approximation, Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a double-well potential can be described by a many particle Hamiltonian of Bose-Hubbard type. We focus on such a BEC whose interatomic interaction strength is modulated periodically by $δ$-kicks which represents a realization of a kicked top. In the (classical) mean-field approximation it provides a rich mixed phase space dynamics with regular and chaotic regions. By increasing the kick-strength a bifurcation leads to the appearance of self-trapping states localized on regular islands. This self-trapping is also found for the many…
The correspondence between exotic quantum holonomy that occurs in families of Hermitian cycles, and exceptional points (EPs) for non-Hermitian quantum theory is examined in quantum kicked tops. Under a suitable condition, an explicit expressions of the adiabatic parameter dependencies of quasienergies and stationary states, which exhibit anholonomies, are obtained. It is also shown that the quantum kicked tops with the complexified adiabatic parameter have a higher order EP, which is broken into lower order EPs with the application of small perturbations. The stability of exotic holonomy again…
Entanglement production in coupled chaotic systems is studied with the help of kicked tops. Deriving the correct classical map, we have used the reduced Husimi function, the Husimi function of the reduced density matrix, to visualize the possible behaviors of a wavepacket. We have studied a phase space based measure of the complexity of a state and used random matrix theory (RMT) to model the strongly chaotic cases. Extensive numerical studies have been done for the entanglement production in coupled kicked tops corresponding to different underlying classical dynamics and different coupling st…
We study the dynamical generation of entanglement as a signature of chaos in a system of periodically kicked coupled-tops, where chaos and entanglement arise from the same physical mechanism. The long-time averaged entanglement as a function of the position of an initially localized wave packet very closely correlates with the classical phase space surface of section -- it is nearly uniform in the chaotic sea, and reproduces the detailed structure of the regular islands. The uniform value in the chaotic sea is explained by the random state conjecture. As classically chaotic dynamics take local…
The entanglement of eigenstates in two coupled, classically chaotic kicked tops is studied in dependence of their interaction strength. The transition from the non-interacting and unentangled system towards full random matrix behavior is governed by a universal scaling parameter. Using suitable random matrix transition ensembles we express this transition parameter as a function of the subsystem sizes and the coupling strength for both unitary and orthogonal symmetry classes. The universality is confirmed for the level spacing statistics of the coupled kicked tops and a perturbative descriptio…
We present a framework for understanding the dynamics of operator size, and bounding the growth of out-of-time-ordered correlators, in models of large-$S$ spins. Focusing on the dynamics of a single spin, we show the finiteness of the Lyapunov exponent in the large-$S$ limit; our bounds are tighter than the best known Lieb-Robinson-type bounds on these systems. We numerically find our upper bound on Lyapunov exponents is within an order of magnitude of numerically computed values in classical and quantum kicked top models. Generalizing our results to coupled large-$S$ spins on lattices, we sho…
Edge localization is a fascinating quantum phenomenon. In this paper, the underlying mechanism generating it is presented analytically and verified numerically for a weakly kicked three-dimensional rotor. Analogy to tight binding model in solid state physics is used. The edge states result of the edge at zero angular momentum of the three-dimensional kicked rotor.
Previous results indicate that while chaos can lead to substantial entropy production, thereby maximizing dynamical entanglement, this still falls short of maximality. Random Matrix Theory (RMT) modeling of composite quantum systems, investigated recently, entails an universal distribution of the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrices. We demonstrate that these distributions are realized in quantized chaotic systems by using a model of two coupled and kicked tops. We derive an explicit statistical universal bound on entanglement, that is also valid for the case of unequal dimensionality o…
A kicked quantum nondemolition measurement is introduced, where a qubit is weakly measured by pumping current. Measurement statistics are derived for weak measurements combined with single qubit unitary operations. These results are applied to violate a generalization of Leggett and Garg's inequality. The violation is related to the failure of the noninvasive detector assumption, and may be interpreted as either intrinsic detector backaction, or the qubit entangling the microscopic detector excitations. The results are discussed in terms of a quantum point contact kicked by a pulse generator, …
We investigate how the dynamical production of quantum entanglement for weakly coupled mapping systems is influenced by the chaotic dynamics of the corresponding classical system. We derive a general perturbative formula for the entanglement production rate which is defined by using the linear entropy of the subsystem. This formula predicts that {\it the increment of the strength of chaos does not enhance the production rate of entanglement} when the coupling is weak enough and the subsystems are strongly chaotic. The prediction is confirmed by numerical experiments for coupled kicked tops and…
The production of quantum entanglement between weakly coupled mapping systems, whose classical counterparts are both strongly chaotic, is investigated. In the weak coupling regime, it is shown that time correlation functions of the unperturbed systems determine the entanglement production. In particular, we elucidate that the increment of nonlinear parameter of coupled kicked tops does not accelerate the entanglement production in the strongly chaotic region. An approach to the dynamical inhibition of entanglement is suggested.
In the presence of interactions, periodically-driven quantum systems generically thermalize to an infinite-temperature state. Recently, however, it was shown that in random kicked rotors with local interactions, this long-time equilibrium could be strongly delayed by operating in a regime of weakly fluctuating random phases, leading to the emergence of a metastable thermal ensemble. Here we show that when the random kinetic energy is smaller than the interaction energy, this system in fact exhibits a much richer dynamical phase diagram, which includes a low-energy pre-thermal phase characteriz…
We study the stability of unitary quantum dynamics of composite systems (for example: central system + environment) with respect to weak interaction between the two parts. Unified theoretical formalism is applied to study different physical situations: (i) coherence of a forward evolution as measured by purity of the reduced density matrix, (ii) stability of time evolution with respect to small coupling between subsystems, and (iii) Loschmidt echo measuring dynamical irreversibility. Stability has been measured either by fidelity of pure states of a composite system, or by the so-called reduce…
Quantum chaos is a subject whose major goal is to identify and to investigate different quantum signatures of classical chaos. Here we study entanglement production in coupled chaotic systems as a possible quantum indicator of classical chaos. We use coupled kicked tops as a model for our extensive numerical studies. We find that, in general, presence of chaos in the system produces more entanglement. However, coupling strength between two subsystems is also very important parameter for the entanglement production. Here we show how chaos can lead to large entanglement which is universal and de…
Quantum chaos is the study of quantum systems whose classical description is chaotic. How does chaos manifest itself in the quantum world? In this spirit, we study the dynamical generation of entanglement as a signature of chaos in a system of periodically kicked coupled-tops, where chaos and entanglement arise from the same physical mechanism. The long-time entanglement as a function of the position of an initially localized wave packet very closely correlates with the classical phase space surface of section - it is nearly uniform in the chaotic sea, and reproduces the detailed structure of …
Out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC), vigorously being explored as a measure of quantum chaos and information scrambling, is studied here in the natural and simplest multi-particle context of bipartite systems. We show that two strongly chaotic and weakly interacting subsystems display two distinct phases in the growth of OTOC.The first is dominated by intra-subsystem scrambling, when an exponential growth with a positive Lyapunov exponent is observed till the Ehrenfest time. This phase is essentially independent of the interaction, while the second phase is an interaction dominated exponentia…
One of the principal goals of controlling classical chaotic dynamical systems is known as targeting, which is the very weakly perturbative process of using the system's extreme sensitivity to initial conditions in order to arrive at a predetermined target state. It is shown that a generalization to chaotic quantum systems is possible in the semiclassical regime, but requires tailored perturbations whose effects must undo the dynamical spreading of the evolving quantum state. The procedure described here is applied to initially minimum uncertainty wave packets in the quantum kicked rotor, a pre…
Multifractal dimensions allow for characterizing the localization properties of states in complex quantum systems. For ergodic states the finite-size versions of fractal dimensions converge to unity in the limit of large system size. However, the approach to the limiting behavior is remarkably slow. Thus, an understanding of the scaling and finite-size properties of fractal dimensions is essential. We present such a study for random matrix ensembles, and compare with two chaotic quantum systems --- the kicked rotor and a spin chain. For random matrix ensembles we analytically obtain the finite…
Classical quasi-integrable systems are known to have Lyapunov times much shorter than their ergodicity time -- the most clear example being the Solar System -- but the situation for their quantum counterparts is less well understood. As a first example, we examine the quantum Lyapunov exponent, defined by the evolution of the 4-point out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC), of integrable systems which are weakly perturbed by an external noise, a setting that has proven to be illuminating in the classical case. In analogy to the tangent space in classical systems, we derive a linear superoperator e…
We derive universal entanglement entropy and Schmidt eigenvalue behaviors for the eigenstates of two quantum chaotic systems coupled with a weak interaction. The progression from a lack of entanglement in the noninteracting limit to the entanglement expected of fully randomized states in the opposite limit is governed by the single scaling transition parameter, $Λ$. The behaviors apply equally well to few- and many-body systems, e.g.\ interacting particles in quantum dots, spin chains, coupled quantum maps, and Floquet systems as long as their subsystems are quantum chaotic, and not localized …
Describing dynamics of quantum many-body systems is a formidable challenge due to rapid generation of quantum entanglement between remote degrees of freedom. A promising approach to tackle this challenge, which has been proposed recently, is to characterize the quantum dynamics of a many-body system and its properties as a bath via the Feynman-Vernon influence matrix (IM), which is an operator in the space of time trajectories of local degrees of freedom. Physical understanding of the general scaling of the IM's temporal entanglement and its relation to basic dynamical properties is highly inc…

We consider the spectral statistics of the Floquet operator for disordered, periodically driven spin chains in their quantum chaotic and many-body localized phases (MBL). The spectral statistics are characterized by the traces of powers $t$ of the Floquet operator, and our approach hinges on the fact that, for integer $t$ in systems with local interactions, these traces can be re-expressed in terms of products of dual transfer matrices, each representing a spatial slice of the system. We focus on properties of the dual transfer matrix products as represented by a spectrum of Lyapunov exponents…
