Analyzing the properties of entanglement in many-particle spin-1/2 systems is generally difficult because the system's Hilbert space grows exponentially with the number of constituent particles, $N$. Fortunately, it is still possible to investigate many-particle entanglement when the state of the system possesses sufficient symmetry. In this paper, we present a practical method for efficiently computing various bipartite entanglement measures for states in the symmetric subspace and perform these calculations for $N\sim 10^3$. By considering all possible bipartite splits, we construct a picture of the multiscale entanglement in large symmetric systems. In particular, we characterize dynamically generated spin-squeezed states by comparing them to known reference states (e.g., GHZ and Dicke states) and new families of states with near-maximal bipartite entropy. We quantify the trade-off between the degree of entanglement and its robustness to particle loss, emphasizing that substantial entanglement need not be fragile.
A method is proposed to characterize and quantify multipartite entanglement in terms of the probability density function of bipartite entanglement over all possible balanced bipartitions of an ensemble of qubits. The method is tested on a class of random pure states.
We discuss how to characterize entanglement sources with finite sets of measurements. The measurements do not have to be tomographically complete, and may consist of POVMs rather than von Neumann measurements. Our method yields a probability that the source generates an entangled state as well as estimates of any desired calculable entanglement measures, including their error bars. We apply two criteria, namely Akaike's information criterion and the Bayesian information criterion, to compare and assess different models (with different numbers of parameters) describing entanglement-generating d…
We introduce the concept of entanglement width as measure of the spatial distribution of entanglement in multiparticle systems. We develop criteria to detect the width of entanglement using global observables such as energy and magnetic susceptibility. Therefore, the introduced entanglement criteria can be applied to systems where addressing of single particles is not possible. We apply the criteria to different examples such as the J1-J2- Heisenberg model and point out the difference between entanglement depth and entanglement width.
We derive a separability criterion for bipartite quantum systems which generalizes the already known criteria. It is based on observables having generic commutation relations. We then discuss in detail the relation among these criteria.
Quantum entanglement is at the heart of many tasks in quantum information. Apart from simple cases (low dimensions, few particles, pure states), however, the mathematical structure of entanglement is not yet fully understood. This tutorial is an introduction to our present knowledge about how to decide whether a given state is separable or entangled, how to characterize entanglement via witness operators, how to classify entangled states according to their usefulness (i.e. distillability), and how to quantify entanglement with appropriate measures.
Multipartite entanglement constitutes one of the key resources in quantum information processing. We exploit correlation tensor norms to develop a framework for its experimental detection without the need for shared frames of reference. By bounding these norms for partially separable states and states of limited dimension we achieve an extensive characterization of entanglement in multipartite systems in an experimentally feasible way. Furthermore we show that both bi- and multipartite dimensionality of entanglement can be revealed by our methods.
We show how to detect entangled, bound entangled, and separable bipartite quantum states of arbitrary dimension and mixedness using geometric entanglement witnesses. These witnesses are constructed using properties of the Hilbert-Schmidt geometry and can be shifted along parameterized lines. The involved conditions are simplified using Bloch decompositions of operators and states. As an example we determine the three different types of states for a family of two-qutrit states that is part of the "magic simplex", i.e. the set of Bell-state mixtures of arbitrary dimension.
On the basis of linear programming, new sets of entanglement witnesses (EWs) for 3x3 and 4x4 systems are constructed. In both cases, the constructed EWs correspond to the hyperplanes contacting, without intersecting, the related feasible regions at line segments and restricted planes respectively. Due to the special property of the contacting area between the hyper-planes and the feasible regions, the corresponding hyper-planes can be turned around the contacting area throughout a bounded interval and hence create an infinite number of EWs. As these EWs are able to detect entanglement of some …
Entanglement of high-dimensional quantum systems has become increasingly important for quantum communication and experimental tests of nonlocality. However, many effects of high-dimensional entanglement can be simulated by using multiple copies of low-dimensional systems. We present a general theory to characterize those high-dimensional quantum states for which the correlations cannot simply be simulated by low-dimensional systems. Our approach leads to general criteria for detecting multilevel entanglement in multiparticle quantum states, which can be used to verify these phenomena experimen…
We develop protocols for preparing a GHZ state and, in general,a pure multi-partite maximally entangled state in a distributed network with apriori quantum entanglement between agents using classical communication and local operations. We investigate and characterize the minimal combinatorics of the sharing of EPR pairs required amongst agents in a network for the creation of multi-partite entanglement. We also characterize the minimal combinatorics of agents in the creation of pure maximal multi-partite entanglement amongst the set $N$ of $n$ agents in a network using apriori multi-partite en…
In the paper, we give a characterization of arbitrary $n$-mode Gaussian coherence breaking channels (GCBCs) and show the tensor product of a GCBC and arbitrary a Gaussian channel maps all input states into product states. The inclusion relation among GCBCs, Gaussian positive partial transpose channels (GPPTC), entanglement breaking channels (GEBC) and Gaussian classical-quantum channels (GCQC) is displayed. Finally, we prove that Gaussian classical ($χ$-) capacity for the tensor products of GCBCs and arbitrary Gaussian channels is additive.
Witness operators are a central tool to detect entanglement or to distinguish among the different entanglement classes of multiparticle systems, which can be defined using stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). We show a one-to-one correspondence between general SLOCC witnesses and a class of entanglement witnesses in an extended Hilbert space. This relation can be used to derive SLOCC witnesses from criteria for full separability of quantum states; moreover, given SLOCC witness can be viewed as entanglement witnesses. As applications of this relation we discuss the c…
We propose a framework to characterize entanglement with quantum discord, both asymmetric and symmetric, over state extensions. In particular, we show that the minimal Bures distance of discord over state extensions is equivalent to Bures distance of entanglement. This equivalence places quantum discord at a more primitive position than entanglement conceptually in the sense that entanglement can be interpreted as an irreducible part of discord over all state extensions. Based on this equivalence, we also offer an operational meaning of Bures distance of entanglement by connecting it to quantu…
We derive a family of necessary separability criteria for finite-dimensional systems based on inequalities for variances of observables. We show that every pure bipartite entangled state violates some of these inequalities. Furthermore, a family of bound entangled states and true multipartite entangled states can be detected. The inequalities also allow to distinguish between different classes of true tripartite entanglement for qubits. We formulate an equivalent criterion in terms of covariance matrices. This allows us to apply criteria known from the regime of continuous variables to finite-…
Entanglement verification and measurement is essential for experimental tests of quantum mechanics and also for quantum communication and information science. Standard methods of verifying entanglement in a bipartite mixed state require detection of both particles and involve coincidence measurement. We present a method that enables us to verify and measure entanglement in a two-photon mixed state without detecting one of the photons, i.e., without performing any coincidence measurement or postselection. We consider two identical sources, each of which can generate the same two-photon mixed st…
Understanding the distribution of quantum entanglement over many parties is a fundamental challenge of quantum physics and is of practical relevance for several applications in the field of quantum information. Here we use methods from quantum metrology to microscopically characterize the entanglement structure of multimode continuous-variable states in all possible multi-partitions and in all reduced distributions. From experimentally measured covariance matrices of Gaussian states with 2, 3, and 4 photonic modes with controllable losses, we extract the metrological sensitivity as well as an …
We show that higher order inter-group covariances involving even number of qubits are necessarily positive semidefinite for N qubit separable states, which are completely symmetric under permutations of the qubits. This identification leads to a family of sufficient conditions of inseparability based on the negativity of 2kth order inter-group covariance matrices of symmetric N-qubit systems. These conditions have a simple structure and detect entanglement in all even partitions of the symmetric multiqubit system. The observables involved are feasible experimental quantities and do not demand …
In [M. Piani et al., arXiv:1103.4032 (2011)] an activation protocol was introduced which maps the general non-classical (multipartite) correlations between given systems into bipartite entanglement between the systems and local ancillae by means of a potentially highly entangling interaction. Here, we study how this activation protocol can be used to entangle the starting systems themselves via entanglement swapping through a measurement on the ancillae. Furthermore, we bound the relative entropy of quantumness (a naturally arising measure of non-classicality in the scheme of Piani et al. abov…
Pulsed parametric downconversion (PDC) processes generate photon pairs with a rich spectral-temporal structure, which offer an attractive potential for quantum information and communication applications. In this paper, we investigate the four-dimensional chronocyclic Wigner function of the PDC state, which naturally lends itself to the pulsed characteristics of these states. From this function we derive the conditioned time-bandwidth product of one of the pair photons, a quantity which is not only a valid measure of entanglement between the PDC photons but also allows to highlight a remarkable…
The experimental detection of multipartite entanglement usually requires a number of appropriately chosen local quantum measurements which are aligned with respect to a previously shared common reference frame. The latter, however, can be a challenging prerequisite e.g. for satellite-based photonic quantum communication, making the development of alternative detection strategies desirable. One possibility for avoiding the distribution of classical reference frames is to perform a number of local measurements with settings distributed uniformly at random. In this work we follow such a treatment…

It is well known that the classification of pure multiparticle entangled states according to stochastic local operations leads to a natural classification of mixed states in terms of convex sets. We present a simple algorithmic procedure to prove that a quantum state lies within a given convex set. Our algorithm generalizes a recent algorithm for proving separability of quantum states [J. Barreiro et al., Nature Phys. 6, 943 (2010)]. We give several examples which show the wide applicability of our approach. We also propose a procedure to determine a vicinity of a given quantum state which sti…
We show that current correlations at the exit ports of a beam splitter can be used to detect electronic entanglement for a fairly general input state. This includes the situation where electron pairs can enter the beam splitter from the same port or be separated due to backscattering. The proposed scheme allows to discriminate between occupation-number and degree-of-freedom entanglement.
The use of quantum entanglement to study condensed matter systems has been flourishing in critical systems and topological phases. Additionally, using real-space entanglement entropies and entanglement spectra one can characterize localized and delocalized phases of disordered fermion systems. Here we instead propose the momentum-space entanglement spectrum as a means of characterizing disordered models. We show that localization in 1D arises from the momentum space entanglement between left and right movers and illustrate our methods using explicit models with spatially correlated disorder th…
We consider the problem of characterizing genuine multiparticle entanglement for permutationally invariant states using the approach of PPT mixtures. We show that the evaluation of this necessary biseparability criterion scales polynomially with the number of particles. In practice, it can be evaluated easily up to ten qubits and improves existing criteria significantly. Finally, we show that our approach solves the problem of characterizing genuine multiparticle entanglement for permutationally invariant three-qubit states.
Quantum information theory is a very young area of research offering a lot of challenging open questions to be tackled by ambitious upcoming physicists. One such problem is addressed in this thesis. Recently, several protocols have emerged which exploit both continuous variables and discrete variables. On the one hand, outperforming many of the established pure continuous variable or discrete variable schemes, these hybrid approaches offer new opportunities. However, on the other hand, they also lead to new, intricate, as yet uninvestigated, phenomena. An important ingredient of several of the…
Entanglement of high-dimensional and multipartite quantum systems offer promising perspectives in quantum information processing. However, the characterization and measure of such kind of entanglement is of great challenge. Here we consider the overlaps between the maximal quantum mean values and the classical bound of the CHSH inequalities for pairwise-qubit states in two-dimensional subspaces. We show that the concurrence of a pure state in any high-dimensional multipartite system can be equivalently represented by these overlaps. Here we consider the projections of an arbitrary high-dimensi…

Very recently, strongly non-Gaussian states have been observed via a direct three-mode spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a superconducting cavity [Phys. Rev. X 10, 011011 (2020)]. The created multi-photon non-Gaussian correlations are attractive and useful for various quantum information tasks. However, how to detect and classify multipartite non-Gaussian entanglement has not yet been completely understood. Here, we present an experimentally practical method to characterize continuous-variable multipartite non-Gaussian entanglement, by introducing a class of nonlinear squeezing paramet…
In this paper, a class of indecomposable positive finite rank elementary operators of order $(n,n)$ are constructed. This allows us to give a simple necessary and sufficient criterion for separability of pure states in bipartite systems of any dimension in terms of positive elementary operators of order $(2,2)$ and get some new mixed entangled states that can not be detected by the positive partial transpose (PPT) criterion and the realignment criterion.
We introduce a family of highly symmetric bipartite quantum states in arbitrary dimensions. It consists of all states that are invariant under local phase rotations and local cyclic permutations of the basis. We solve the separability problem for a subspace of these states and show that a sizable part of the family is bound entangled. We also calculate some of the Schmidt numbers for the family in $d = 3$, thereby characterizing the dimensionality of entanglement. Our results allow us to estimate entanglement properties of arbitrary states, as general states can be symmetrized to the considere…
We study the pairwise concurrences, a measure of entanglement, of the ground states for the frustrated Heisenberg ring to explore the relation between entanglement and quantum phase transition associated with the momentum jump. The groundstate concurrences between any two sites are obtained analytically and numerically. It shows that the summation of all possible pairwise concurrences is an appropriate candidate to depict the phase transition. We also investigate the role that the momentum takes in the jump of concurrence at the critical points. We find that an abrupt momentum change rusults i…

We compute entanglement cost and distillable entanglement of states supported on symmetric subspace. Not only giving general formula, we apply them to the output states of optimal cloning machines. Surprisingly, under some settings, the optimal n to m clone and true m copies are the same in entanglement measures. However, they differ in the error exponent of entanglement dilution. We also presented a general theory of entanglement dilution which is applicable to any non-i.i.d sequence of states.
Quantum systems that have never interacted can become nonlocally correlated through a process called entanglement swapping. To characterize nonlocality in this context, we introduce local models where quantum systems that are initially uncorrelated are described by uncorrelated local variables. While a pair of maximally entangled qubits prepared in the usual way (i.e., emitted from a common source) requires a visibility close to 70% to violate a Bell inequality, we show that an entangled pair generated through entanglement swapping will already violate a Bell inequality for visibilities as low…
We consider a class of large superposed states, obtained from dimer coverings on spin-1/2 isotropic lattices, whose potential usefulness ranges from organic molecules to quantum computation. We show that they are genuinely multiparty entangled, irrespective of the geometry and dimension of the isotropic lattice. We then present an efficient method to characterize the genuine multisite entanglement in the case of isotropic square spin-1/2 lattices, with short-range dimer coverings. We use this iterative analytical method to calculate the multisite entanglement of finite-sized lattices, which th…

We study genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) in a system of $n$ qubits prepared in symmetric Dicke states and subjected to the influences of noise. We provide general, setup-independent expressions for experimentally favorable tools such as fidelity- and collective spin-based entanglement witnesses, as well as entangled-class discriminators and multi-point correlation functions. Besides highlighting the effects of the environment on large qubit registers, we also discuss strategies for the robust detection of GME. Our work provides techniques and results for the experimental communities in…
We propose entanglement criteria for multipartite systems via symmetric informationally complete (SIC) measurement and general symmetric informationally complete (GSIC) measurement. We apply these criteria to detect entanglement of multipartite states, such as the convex of Bell states, entangled states mixed with white noise. It is shown that these criteria are stronger than some existing ones.
We propose a detailed study of the geometric entanglement properties of pure symmetric N-qubit states, focusing more particularly on the identification of symmetric states with a high geometric entanglement and how their entanglement behaves asymptotically for large N. We show that much higher geometric entanglement with improved asymptotical behavior can be obtained in comparison with the highly entangled balanced Dicke states studied previously. We also derive an upper bound for the geometric measure of entanglement of symmetric states. The connection with the quantumness of a state is discu…
We present experimental schemes that allow to study the entanglement classes of all symmetric states in multiqubit photonic systems. In addition to comparing the presented schemes in efficiency, we will highlight the relation between the entanglement properties of symmetric Dicke states and a recently proposed entanglement scheme for atoms. In analogy to the latter, we obtain a one-to-one correspondence between well-defined sets of experimental parameters and multiqubit entanglement classes inside the symmetric subspace of the photonic system.
We study entanglement witness and present a construction of entanglement witnesses in terms of the symmetric informationally complete measurements (SIC-POVM). The capability of our witness is shown by some examples and it can be found this witness detects more entanglement than previous separability method given also by SIC-POVM. What's more, comparing with the dimension dependence of SIC-POVM, we also give the entanglement witnesses can be always constructed from general symmetric informationally complete measurements (GSIC-POVM).
We study the separability of symmetric bipartite quantum states and show that a single correlation measurement is sufficient to detect the entanglement of any bipartite symmetric state with a non-positive partial transpose. We also discuss entanglement conditions and entanglement witnesses for states with a positive partial transpose.
We introduce and explore two questions concerning spectra of operators that are of interest in the theory of entanglement in symmetric (i.e., bosonic) quantum systems. First, we investigate the inverse eigenvalue problem for symmetric entanglement witnesses -- that is, we investigate what their possible spectra are. Second, we investigate the problem of characterizing which separable symmetric quantum states remain separable after conjugation by an arbitrary unitary acting on symmetric space -- that is, which states are separable in every orthonormal symmetric basis. Both of these questions ha…
In the past years, many efforts have been made to study various noteworthy phenomena in both parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) and anti-parity-time ($\mathcal{APT}$) symmetric systems. However, entanglement dynamics in $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems has not previously been investigated in both theory and experiments. Here, we investigate the entanglement evolution of two qubits in an $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric system. In the $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric unbroken regime, our theoretical simulations demonstrate the periodic oscillations of entanglement when each qubit evolves identically, while the no…
Pairwise entanglement properties of a symmetric multi-qubit system are analyzed through a complete set of two-qubit local invariants. Collective features of entanglement, such as spin squeezing, are expressed in terms of invariants and a classifcation scheme for pairwise entanglement is proposed. The invariant criteria given here are shown to be related to the recently proposed (Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 120502 (2005)) generalized spin squeezing inequalities for pairwise entanglement in symmetric multi-qubit states.
I study the three parameters bipartite quantum Gaussian state called squeezed asymmetric thermal state, calculate Gaussian entanglement of formation analytically and the up bound of relative entropy of entanglement, compare them with coherent information of the state.Based on the result obtained, one can determine the relative entropy of entanglement of the state with infinitive squeezing.
We generalize the symmetric multi-qubit states to their q-analogs, whose basis vectors are identified with the q-Dicke states. We study the entanglement entropy in these states and find that entanglement is extruded towards certain regions of the system due to the inhomogeneity aroused by q-deformation. We also calculate entanglement entropy in ground states of a related q-deformed Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model and show that the singularities of entanglement can correctly signify the quantum phase transition points for different strengths of q-deformation.
We study the interconversion of multipartite symmetric $N$-qubit states under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). We demonstrate that if two symmetric states can be connected with a nonsymmetric invertible local operation (ILO), then they belong necessarily to the separable, W, or GHZ entanglement class, establishing a practical method of discriminating subsets of entanglement classes. Furthermore, we prove that there always exists a symmetric ILO connecting any pair of symmetric $N$-qubit states equivalent under SLOCC, simplifying the requirements for experimental…
