When a quantum system interacts with an external environment, it undergoes the loss of quantum correlation (decoherence) and the loss of energy (relaxation) and eventually all of the quantum information becomes classical. Here we show a general principle to use unitary operations to establish and preserve particular non-equilibrium states in arbitrary relaxing quantum systems. We elucidate these concepts with examples of state preservation in one-spin and two-spin entangled systems.
It is pointed out that the question of a purely unitary quantum dynamics amounts to the question if von Neumann entropy of a dynamically closed quantum system is preserved in evolution.
We analyze the dynamics of a system qudit of dimension mu sequentially interacting with the nu-dimensional qudits of a chain playing the ore of an environment. Each pairwise collision has been modeled as a random unitary transformation. The relaxation to equilibrium of the purity of the system qudit, averaged over random collisions, is analytically computed by means of a Markov chain approach. In particular, we show that the steady state is the one corresponding to the steady state for random collisions with a single environment qudit of effective dimension nu_e=nu*mu. Finally, we numerically …
NMR quantum information processing studies rely on the reconstruction of the density matrix representing the so-called pseudo-pure states (PPS). An initially pure part of a PPS state undergoes unitary and non-unitary (relaxation) transformations during a computation process, causing a "loss of purity" until the equilibrium is reached. Besides, upon relaxation, the nuclear polarization varies in time, a fact which must be taken into account when comparing density matrices at different instants. Attempting to use time-fixed normalization procedures when relaxation is present, leads to various an…
We study unitary evolution of bipartite entanglement in a circuit with nearest-neighbor random gates. Deriving a compact non-unitary description of purity dynamics on qudits we find a sudden transition in the purity relaxation rate the origin of which is in the underlying boundary localized eigenmodes -- the skin effect. We provide the full solution of the problem, being one of the simplest iterations of two-site matrices, namely, that each is a sum of only two projectors. This leads to rich dynamics influenced by the Jordan normal form of the kernel and, most importantly, a spectrum that is c…
It has been proposed that measurement in quantum mechanics results from spontaneous breaking of a symmetry of the measuring apparatus and could be a unitary process that preserves coherence. Viewed in this manner, it is argued, non-destructive measurements should preserve this coherence and be reversible. It is shown that experiments with maximally entangled bipartite states can indeed distinguish between projective and unitary measurements.

Continuous time quantum walks in the form of quantum counterparts of turbulent diffusion in comb geometry are considered. The interplay between the backbone inhomogeneous advection $δ(y)x\partial_x$ along the $x$ axis, which takes place only at the $y=0$, and normal diffusion inside fingers $\partial_y^2$ along the $y$ axis leads to turbulent diffusion. This geometrical constraint of transport coefficients due to comb geometry and properties of a dilatation operator lead to consideration of two possible scenarios of quantum mechanics. These two variants of continuous time quantum walks are des…
We provide a new perspective on non-Hermitian evolution in quantum mechanics by emphasizing the same method as in the Hermitian quantum evolution. We first give a precise description of the non unitary evolution, and collecting the basic results around it and postulating the norm preserving. This cautionary postulate imposing that the time evolution of a non Hermitian quantum system preserves the inner products between the associated states must not be read naively. We also give an example showing that the solutions of time-dependent non Hermitian Hamiltonian systems given by a linear combinat…
Dynamical decoupling as a quantum control strategy aims at suppressing quantum decoherence adopting the popular philosophy that the disorder in the unitary evolution of the open quantum system caused by environmental noises should be neutralized by a sequence of ordered or well-designed external operations acting on the system. This work studies the solution of quantum-state-diffusion equations by mixing two channels of environmental noises, i.e., relaxation (dissipation) and dephasing. It is interesting to find in two-level and three-level atomic systems that a non-Markovian relaxation or dis…
The famous Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma states that for any set of n vectors, there is a linear transformation into a space of dimension O(log n) that approximately preserves all their lengths. In fact, a Haar random unitary transformation followed by projection onto the first O(log n) coordinates followed by a scaling works as a valid transformation with high probability. In this work, we show that the Haar random unitary can be replaced by a uniformly random unitary chosen from a finite set called an approximate unitary t-design for t = O(log n). Choosing a unitary from such a design requires…

We introduce a method for solving the problem of an externally controlled electron spin in a quantum dot interacting with host nuclei via the hyperfine interaction. Our method accounts for generalized (non-unitary) evolution effected by external controls and the environment, such as coherent lasers combined with spontaneous emission. As a concrete example we develop the microscopic theory of the dynamics of nuclear-induced frequency focusing, as first measured in Science 317, 1896 (2007); we find that the nuclear relaxation rates are several orders of magnitude faster than those quoted in that…
Experiments in coherent nuclear and electron magnetic resonance, and quantum computing in general correspond to control of quantum mechanical systems, guiding them from initial to final target states by unitary transformations. The control inputs (pulse sequences) that accomplish these unitary transformations should take as little time as possible so as to minimize the effects of relaxation and decoherence and to optimize the sensitivity of the experiments. Here, we derive a time-optimal sequences as fundamental building blocks for synthesize unitary transformations. Such sequences can be widel…
We propose an extended quantum mechanical formalism that is based on a wave operator $\vr$, which is related to the ordinary density matrix via $ρ=\vr\vr^\dagger$. This formalism allows a (generalized) unitary evolution between pure and mixed states. It also preserves much of the connection between symmetries and conservation laws. The new formalism is illustrated for the case of a two level system.
The subject of this thesis are various properties of quantum states that make them "non-classical" and their behaviour under unitary operations. In chapter 2 some basic concepts of quantum mechanics and quantum information are reviewed. In chapter 3 properties of quantum states analysed in the literature are identified. I chapter 4 relations between them are analysed: whether possessing of one property by a given state implies possessing another property by the same state. In chapter 5 the central notion of the thesis is introduced, namely possessing a given property in absolute vs. non-absolu…
The dynamics of a single qubit interacting by a sequence of pairwise collisions with an environment consisting of just two more qubits is analyzed. Each collision is modeled in terms of a random unitary operator with a uniform probability distribution described by the uniform Haar measure. We show that the purity of the system qubit as well as the bipartite and the tripartite entanglement reach time averaged equilibrium values characterized by large instantaneous fluctuations. These equilibrium values are independent of the order of collision among the qubits. The relaxation to equilibrium is a…
The notorious quantum measurement problem brings out the difficulty to reconcile two quantum postulates: the unitary evolution of closed quantum systems and the wave-function collapse after a measurement. This problematics is particularly highlighted in the Wigner's friend thought experiment, where the mismatch between unitary evolution and measurement collapse leads to conflicting quantum descriptions for different observers. A recent no-go theorem has established that the (quantum) statistics arising from an extended Wigner's friend scenario is incompatible when one try to hold together thre…
Conditional von Neumann entropy is an intriguing concept in quantum information theory. In the present work, we examine the effect of global unitary operations on the conditional entropy of the system. We start with the set containing states with non-negative conditional entropy and find that some states preserve the non-negativity under unitary operations on the composite system. We call this class of states as Absolute Conditional von Neumann entropy Non Negative class (\textbf{ACVENN}). We are able to characterize such states for $2\otimes 2$ dimensional systems. On a different perspective …
Experiments in coherent nuclear and electron magnetic resonance, and optical spectroscopy correspond to control of quantum mechanical ensembles, guiding them from initial to final target states by unitary transformations. The control inputs (pulse sequences) that accomplish these unitary transformations should take as little time as possible so as to minimize the effects of relaxation and decoherence and to optimize the sensitivity of the experiments. Here we give efficient syntheses of various unitary transformations on Ising spin chains of arbitrary length. The efficient realization of the u…
In the study of quantum computation, data is represented in terms of linear operators which form a generalized model of probability, and computations are most commonly described as products of unitary transformations, which are the transformations which preserve the quality of the data in a precise sense. This naturally leads to "unitary circuit models", which are models of computation in which unitary operators are expressed as a product of "elementary" unitary transformations. However, unitary transformations can also be effected as a composition of operations which are not all unitary thems…
We consider thermal relaxation process of a quantum system attached to a single or multiple reservoirs. Quantifying the degree of irreversibility by entropy production, we prove that the irreversibility of the thermal relaxation is lower-bounded by a relative entropy between the unitarily-evolved state and the final state. The bound characterizes the state discrepancy induced by the non-unitary dynamics, thus reflecting the dissipative nature of irreversibility. Intriguingly, the bound can be evaluated solely in terms of the initial and final states and the system Hamiltonian; hence, providing…
We investigate the approximate quantum state sharing protocol based on random unitary channels, which is secure against any exterior or interior attackers in principle. Although the protocol leaks small information for a security parameter $ε$, the scheme still preserves its information-theoretic secrecy, and reduces some pre-shared classical secret keys for a private quantum channel between a sender and two receivers. The approximate private quantum channels constructed via random unitary channels play a crucial role in the proposed quantum state sharing protocol.
The time-evolution operator obtained from the fractional-time Schrödinger equation (FTSE) is said to be non-unitary since it does not preserve the norm of the vector state in time. As done in the time-dependent non-Hermitian quantum formalism, for a traceless non-Hermitian two-level quantum system, we demonstrate that it is possible to map the non-unitary time-evolution operator in a unitary one. It is done by considering a dynamical Hilbert space with a time-dependent metric operator, constructed from a Hermitian time-dependent Dyson map, in respect to which the system evolves in a unitary wa…
We pose and resolve a seeming paradox about spontaneous symmetry breaking in the quantum theory of infinite systems. For a symmetry to be spontaneously broken, it must not be implementable by a unitary operator. But Wigner's theorem guarantees that every symmetry is implemented by a unitary operator that preserves transition probabilities between pure states. We show how it is possible for a unitary operator of this sort to connect the folia of unitarily inequivalent representations. This result undermines interpretations of quantum theory that hold unitary equivalence to be necessary for phys…
We explore the dynamics of the entanglement entropy near equilibrium in highly-entangled pure states of two quantum-chaotic spin chains undergoing unitary time evolution. We examine the relaxation to equilibrium from initial states with either less or more entanglement entropy than the equilibrium value, as well as the dynamics of the spontaneous fluctuations of the entanglement that occur in equilibrium. For the spin chain with a time-independent Hamiltonian and thus an extensive conserved energy, we find slow relaxation of the entanglement entropy near equilibration. Such slow relaxation is …
A key feature of non-equilibrium thermodynamics is the Markovian, deterministic relaxation of coarse observables such as, for example, the temperature difference between two macroscopic objects which evolves independently of almost all details of the initial state. We demonstrate that the unitary dynamics for moderately sized spin-1/2 systems may yield the same type of relaxation dynamics for a given magnetization difference. This observation might contribute to the understanding of the emergence of thermodynamics within closed quantum systems.

Quantum Cellular Automata are unitary maps that preserve locality and respect causality. We identify them, in any dimension, with simple tensor networks (PEPU) whose bond dimension does not grow with the system size. As a result, they satisfy an area law for the entanglement entropy they can create. We define other classes of non-unitary maps, the so-called quantum channels, that either respect causality or preserve locality. We show that, whereas the latter obey an area law for the amount of quantum correlations they can create, as measured by the quantum mutual information, the former may vi…
We consider a class of quantum lattice models in $1+1$ dimensions represented as local quantum circuits that enjoy a particular "dual-unitarity" property. In essence, this property ensures that both the evolution "in time" and that "in space" are given in terms of unitary transfer matrices. We show that for this class of circuits, generically non-integrable, one can compute explicitly all dynamical correlations of local observables. Our result is exact, non-pertubative, and holds for any dimension $d$ of the local Hilbert space. In the minimal case of qubits ($d = 2$) we also present a classif…
We compute the effect of Markovian bulk dephasing noise on the staggered magnetization of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain, as the system evolves after a Néel quench. For sufficiently weak system-bath coupling, the unitary dynamics are found to be preserved up to a single exponential damping factor. This is a consequence of the interplay between $\mathbb{PT}$ symmetry and weak symmetries, which strengthens previous predictions for $\mathbb{PT}$-symmetric Liouvillian dynamics. Requirements are a non-degenerate $\mathbb{PT}$-symmetric generator of time evolution $\hat{\mathcal{L}}$, a weak pari…
We investigate the fate of coherence in the dynamical evolution of a symmetry protected quantum system. Under the formalism of system-plus-bath for open quantum system, the anti-unitary symmetry exhibits significant difference from the unitary one in protecting initial coherence. Specifically, taking advantage of Lindblad master equation, we find that a pure state in the symmetry protected degenerate subspace will decohere even though both the system Hamiltonian and system-environment interaction respect the same anti-unitary symmetry. In contrast, the coherence will persist when the protectin…
