We study the evolution of an oscillator interacting via the most general bilinear coupling (with time-independent coefficients) with an ``environment'' consisting of a set of other harmonic oscillators. We are mainly interested in a possibility of using the Fokker-Planck equation to describe this evolution. Studying different interaction Hamiltonians, we show that unambiguous reduction to the Fokker-Planck equation is possible only within the framework of the so called rotating-wave approximation. As special cases we consider in detail the evolution of two coupled oscillators and relaxation of a charged oscillator in a uniform magnetic field.
The exact form of quantum propagator of a quantum oscillator interacting with a bosonic bath consisting of $N$ distinguished quantum oscillators with different frequencies is obtained in the Heisenberg picture. Reduced density matrix for oscillator is obtained. The kernel or Green's function connecting the initial density matrix of the oscillator to the density matrix in an arbitrary time is obtained and its connection to Feynman-Vernon influence functional is discussed. Weak coupling regime and squared mean values for position, momentum and energy of the oscillator are obtained in equilibrium…
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for local unitary (LU) operators to leave invariant the set of 1-qubit reduced density matrices of a multi-qubit state. LU operators with this property are tensor products of {\it cyclic local} operators, and form a subgroup, the centralizer subgroup of the set of reduced states, of the Lie group $SU(2)^{\otimes n}$. The dimension of this subgroup depends on the type of reduced density matrices. It is maximum when all reduced states are maximally mixed and it is minimum when none of them is maximally mixed. For any given multi-qubit state, pure or …
The generalized n-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and their local unitary equivalents are the only states of n qubits that are not uniquely determined among pure states by their reduced density matrices of n-1 qubits. Thus, among pure states, the generalized GHZ states are the only ones containing information at the n-party level. We point out a connection between local unitary stabilizer subgroups and the property of being determined by reduced density matrices.
We present that the local unitary equivalence of n-party pure states is consistent with the one of their (n-1)-party reduced density matrices. As an application, we obtain the local invariants for a class of tripartite pure qudits.
In this paper, we show how the entropy (including the von Neumann entropy obtained by tracing across various sizes of subsystems, the entanglement gap, as well as different degrees of Rényi entropy) of the random reduced density matrices are related to their dominant eigenvalue. Analytical results are deduced from Random Matrix Theory (RMT) for decentralized Wishart matrices and backed up by computer simulations. The correlation between our study and entanglement generated by quantum computing is provided with various examples.
By combining a parameterized Hermitian matrix, the realignment matrix of the bipartite density matrix $ρ$ and the vectorization of its reduced density matrices, we present a family of separability criteria, which are stronger than the computable cross norm or realignment (CCNR) criterion. With linear contraction methods, the proposed criteria can be used to detect the multipartite entangled states that are biseparable under any bipartite partitions. Moreover, we show by examples that the presented multipartite separability criteria can be more efficient than the corresponding multipartite real…
We derive the general formula for Lorentz-transformed spin density matrix. It is shown that an appropriate Lorentz transformation can prduce totally unpolarized state out of pure one. Further properties, as depurification by an arbitrary Lorentz boost and its relation to the localization properties are also discussed.
In J. Math. Phys. 13, 1608-1621 (1972), Erdahl considered the convex structure of the set of $N$-representable 2-body reduced density matrices in the case of fermions. Some of these results have a straightforward extension to the $m$-body setting and to the more general quantum marginal problem. We describe these extensions, but can not resolve a problem in the proof of Erdahl's claim that every extreme point is exposed in finite dimensions. Nevertheless, we can show that when $2m \geq N$ every extreme point of the set of $N$-representable $m$-body reduced density matrices has a unique pre-ima…
In their recent work Cooper and Ponec [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2008, 10, 1319-1329] proposed a ``one-electron approximation to domain-averaged Fermi hole (DAFH)" used in electronic population studies. The goal of this comment is to note that the proposal had been already published within the framework of domain-restricted reduced density matrices ($\mathrmΩ$-RDM) and to show that it cannot conceptually be considered as an approximation to DAFH as the authors invoke.
We present a new interpretation for reduced density matrices of secondary variables in relativistic systems via an analysis of Wigner's method to construct the irreducible unitary representations of the Poincaré group. We argue that the usual partial trace method used to obtain spin reduced matrices is not fully rigorous, however, employing our interpretation, similar effective reduced density matrices can be constructed. In addition, we show that our proposal is more useful than the usual one since we are not restricted only to the reduced density matrices that could be obtained by the ordina…
In this paper, we demonstrate that higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) can be used to identify special states in three qubits by local unitary (LU) operations. Since the matrix unfoldings of three qubits are related to their reduced density matrices, HOSVD simultaneously diagonalizes the one-body reduced density matrices of three qubits. From the all-orthogonality conditions of HOSVD, we computed the special states of three qubits. Furthermore, we showed that it is possible to construct a polytope that encapsulates all the special states of three qubits by LU operations with HOSV…
We have calculated the joint probability distribution function for random reverse-cyclic matrices and shown that it is related to an N-body exactly solvable model. We refer to this well-known model potential as a screened harmonic oscillator. The connection enables us to obtain all the correlations among the particle positions moving in a screened harmonic potential. The density of nontrivial eigenvalues of this ensemble is found to be of the Wigner form and admits a hole at the origin, in contrast to the semicircle law of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. The spacing distri…
We present a necessary and sufficient condition for three qutrit density matrices to be the one-particle reduced density matrices of a pure three-qutrit quantum state. The condition consists of seven classes of inequalities satisfied by the eigenvalues of these matrices. One of them is a generalization of a known inequality for the qubit case. Some of these inequalities are proved algebraically whereas the proof of the others uses the fact that a continuous function of the state must have a minimum. Construction of states satisfying these inequalities relies on a representation of the convex s…
In this paper, we study the quantum states generated from two and three linearly interacting quantum harmonic oscillators. We consider the possibility that one of the oscillators be under the influence of a classical external source and obtain the total and reduced density matrices related to the system. We show how the problem can be generalized to n linearly interacting oscillators straightforwardly.
We study the conditions when mixtures of entangled pure states with maximally mixed one-qudit reduced density matrices remain entangled. We found that the resulting mixed state remains entangled when the number of entangled pure states to be mixed is less than or equal to the dimension of the pure states. For the latter case of mixing a number of pure states equal to their dimension, we found that the mixed state is entangled provided that the entangled pure states to be mixed are not equally weighted. We also found that one can restrict the set of pure states that one can mix from in order to…
We study the reduced dynamics of a pair of non-degenerate oscillators coupled collectively to a thermal bath. The model is related to the trilinear boson model where the idler mode is promoted to a field. Due to nonlinear coupling, the Markovian master equation for the pair of oscillators admits non-Gaussian equilibrium states, where the modes distribute according to the Bose-Einstein statistics. These states are metastable before the nonlinear coupling is taken over by linear coupling between the individual oscillators and the field. The Gibbs state for the individual modes lies in the subspa…
We study the most general continuous transformation on the generators of bilinear master equations of a quantum oscillator. We find that transformation operators that preserve the hermiticity of density operators and conserve the probability of reduced dynamics should be adjoint-symmetric, and they are not limited to the pure product of unitary operators in the bra and ket space but could be a mixture of them. We need to include the more general transformation operators to explore the full symmetry of generic reduced dynamics. We discuss how the operators are related to those considered in pre…
We introduce QRDM-NEVPT2: a hybrid quantum-classical implementation of strongly-contracted N-electron Valence State $2^{nd}$-order Perturbation Theory (SC-NEVPT2), in which the Complete Active Space Configuration Interaction (CASCI) step, capturing static correlation effects, is replaced by a simulation performed on a quantum computer. Subsequently, n-particle Reduced Density Matrices (n-RDMs) measured on a quantum device are used directly in a classical SC-NEVPT2 calculation, which recovers remaining dynamic electron correlation effects approximately. We also discuss the use of the cumulant e…
Many-body wavefunctions usually lie in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces. However, physically relevant states, i.e, the eigenstates of the Schrödinger equation are rare. For many-body systems involving only pairwise interactions, these eigenstates form a low-dimensional subspace of the entire Hilbert space. The geometry of this subspace, which we call the eigenstate moduli problem is parameterized by a set of 2-particle Hamiltonian. This problem is closely related to the $N$-representability conditions for 2-reduced density matrices, a long-standing challenge for quantum many-body systems. Despi…
The reduced density matrices of a many-body quantum system form a convex set, whose three-dimensional projection $Θ$ is convex in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The boundary $\partialΘ$ of $Θ$ may exhibit nontrivial geometry, in particular ruled surfaces. Two physical mechanisms are known for the origins of ruled surfaces: symmetry breaking and gapless. In this work, we study the emergence of ruled surfaces for systems with local Hamiltonians in infinite spatial dimension, where the reduced density matrices are known to be separable as a consequence of the quantum de Finetti's theorem. This allows us to iden…
Other than scattering problems where perturbation theory is applicable, there are basically two ways to solve problems in physics. One is to reduce the problem to harmonic oscillators, and the other is to formulate the problem in terms of two-by-two matrices. If two oscillators are coupled, the problem combines both two-by-two matrices and harmonic oscillators. This method then becomes a powerful research tool to cover many different branches of physics. Indeed, the concept and methodology in one branch of physics can be translated into another through the common mathematical formalism. Couple…
A possibly fruitful extension of conventional random matrix ensembles is proposed by imposing symmetry constraints on conventional Hermitian matrices or parity-time- (PT-) symmetric matrices. To illustrate the main idea, we first study 2*2 complex Hermitian matrix ensembles with O(2) invariant constraints, yielding novel level-spacing statistics such as singular distributions, half-Gaussian distribution, distributions interpolating between GOE (Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble) distribution and half Gaussian distributions, as well as gapped-GOE distribution. Such a symmetry-reduction strategy is t…
States of nonlinear quantum oscillators (f-oscillators) are considered in the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal representation and the tomographic probability representation, where the states are described by standard probability distributions instead of wave functions or density matrices. The evolving integrals of motion for classical and quantum f-oscillators are found and the solution for the Liouville equation associated with the probability distribution on the phase space for this oscillator is obtained along with the solution of Moyal equation for quantum f-oscillator, which provide the solutions for pa…
Quantum state tomography via local measurements is an efficient tool for characterizing quantum states. However it requires that the original global state be uniquely determined (UD) by its local reduced density matrices (RDMs). In this work we demonstrate for the first time a class of states that are UD by their RDMs under the assumption that the global state is pure, but fail to be UD in the absence of that assumption. This discovery allows us to classify quantum states according to their UD properties, with the requirement that each class be treated distinctly in the practice of simplifying…
Unlike bosons, fermions always have a non-trivial entanglement. Intuitively, Slater determinantal states should be the least entangled states. To make this intuition precise we investigate entropy and entanglement of fermionic states and prove some extremal and near extremal properties of reduced density matrices of Slater determinantal states.
Recently, an adaptive variational algorithm termed Adaptive Derivative-Assembled Pseudo-Trotter ansatz Variational Quantum Eigensolver (ADAPT-VQE) has been proposed by Grimsley et al. (Nat. Commun. 10, 3007) while the number of measurements required to perform this algorithm scales O(N^8). In this work, we present an efficient adaptive variational quantum solver of the Schrodinger equation based on ADAPT-VQE together with the reduced density matrix reconstruction approach, which reduces the number of measurements from O(N^8) to O(N^4). This new algorithm is quite suitable for quantum simulatio…
The information content of continuous quantum variables systems is usually studied using a number of well known approximation methods. The approximations are made to obtain the spectrum, eigenfunctions or the reduced density matrices that are essential to calculate the entropy-like quantities that quantify the information. Even in the sparse cases where the spectrum and eigenfunctions are exactly known the entanglement spectrum, {\em i.e.} the spectrum of the reduced density matrices that characterize the problem, must be obtained in an approximate fashion. In this work, we obtain analytically…
We define the oscillator and Coulomb systems on four-dimensional spaces with U(2)-invariant Kahler metric and perform their Hamiltonian reduction to the three-dimensional oscillator and Coulomb systems specified by the presence of Dirac monopoles. We find the Kahler spaces with conic singularity, where the oscillator and Coulomb systems on three-dimensional sphere and two-sheet hyperboloid are originated. Then we construct the superintegrable oscillator system on three-dimensional sphere and hyperboloid, coupled to monopole, and find their four-dimensional origins. In the latter case the metri…
Starting from a total Lagrangian describing an oscillator-bath system, a novel derivation of exact quantum propagator is presented. Having the quantum propagator, the exact density matrix, reduced density matrix of the main oscillator and thermal equilibrium fixed point are obtained. The problem is generalised to the cases where the main oscillator is under the influence of a classical external force. By introducing generalised auxiliary classical fields, the generalised quantum propagator or generating functional of position correlation functions is obtained.
The reduced density matrices (RDMs) of many-body quantum states form a convex set. The boundary of low dimensional projections of this convex set may exhibit nontrivial geometry such as ruled surfaces. In this paper, we study the physical origins of these ruled surfaces for bosonic systems. The emergence of ruled surfaces was recently proposed as signatures of symmetry-breaking phase. We show that, apart from being signatures of symmetry-breaking, ruled surfaces can also be the consequence of gapless quantum systems by demonstrating an explicit example in terms of a two-mode Ising model. Our a…
We study the evolution of bipartite entangled quasi-Bell states in a strongly coupled qubit-oscillator system in the presence of a static bias, and extend it to the ultra-strong coupling regime. Using the adiabatic approximation the reduced density matrix of the qubit is obtained for the strong coupling domain in closed form that involves linear combinations of the Jacobi theta functions. The reduced density matrix of the oscillator yields the phase space Husimi Q-distribution. In the strong coupling regime the $Q$-function evolves to uniformly separated macroscopically distinct Gaussian peaks…
A new method is described for determining the quantum state of correlated multimode radiation by interfering the modes and measuring the statistics of the superimposed fields in four-port balanced homodyne detection. The full information on the $N$-mode quantum state is obtained by controlling both the relative amplitudes and the phases of the modes, which simplifies the reconstruction of density matrices to only $N+1$ Fourier transforms. In particular, this method yields time-correlated multimode density matrices of optical pulses by superimposing the signal by a sequence of short local-oscil…
The second-order differential equation for a damped harmonic oscillator can be converted to two coupled first-order equations, with two two-by-two matrices leading to the group $Sp(2)$. It is shown that this oscillator system contains the essential features of Wigner's little groups dictating the internal space-time symmetries of particles in the Lorentz-covariant world. The little groups are the subgroups of the Lorentz group whose transformations leave the four-momentum of a given particle invariant. It is shown that the damping modes of the oscillator correspond to the little groups for mas…
A mixture of two kinds of identical bosons, species $1$ and species $2$, held in a harmonic potential and interacting by harmonic intra-species and inter-species particle-particle interactions is discussed. To prove Bose-Einstein condensation of the mixture three steps are needed. First, we integrate the all-particle density matrix, employing a four-parameter matrix recurrence relations, down to the lowest-order intra-species and inter-species reduced density matrices of the mixture. Second, the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (mean-field) equations of the mixture are solved analytically. Third, we a…

Explicitly separable density matrices are constructed for all separable two-qubits states based on Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) decompositions. For density matrices which include only two-qubits correlations the number of HS parameters is reduced to 3 by using local rotations, and for two-qubits states which include single qubit measurements, the number of parameters is reduced to 4 by local Lorentz transformations. For both cases we related the absolute values of the HS parameters to probabilities, and the outer products of various Pauli matrices were transformed to pure states density matrices produ…
In this paper, we study the geometry of reduced density matrices for states with symmetry-protected topological (SPT) order. We observe ruled surface structures on the boundary of the convex set of low dimension projections of the reduced density matrices. In order to signal the SPT order using ruled surfaces, it is important that we add a symmetry-breaking term to the boundary of the system---no ruled surface emerges in systems without boundary or when we add a symmetry-breaking term representing a thermodynamic quantity. Although the ruled surfaces only appear in the thermodynamic limit wher…
Using techniques from symplectic geometry, we prove that a pure state of three qubits is up to local unitaries uniquely determined by its one-particle reduced density matrices exactly when their ordered spectra belong to the boundary of the, so called, Kirwan polytope. Otherwise, the states with given reduced density matrices are parameterized, up to local unitary equivalence, by two real variables. Given inevitable experimental imprecisions, this means that already for three qubits a pure quantum state can never be reconstructed from single-particle tomography. We moreover show that knowledge…
We review the properties of reduced density matrices for free fermionic or bosonic many-particle systems in their ground state. Their basic feature is that they have a thermal form and thus lead to a quasi-thermodynamic problem with a certain free-particle Hamiltonian. We discuss the derivation of this result, the character of the Hamiltonian and its eigenstates, the single-particle spectra and the full spectra, the resulting entanglement and in particular the entanglement entropy. This is done for various one- and two-dimensional situations, including also the evolution after global or local …
Taking partial traces for computing reduced density matrices, or related functions, is a ubiquitous procedure in the quantum mechanics of composite systems. In this article, we present a thorough description of this function and analyze the number of elementary operations (ops) needed, under some possible alternative implementations, to compute it on a classical computer. As we notice, it is worthwhile doing some analytical developments in order to avoid making null multiplications and sums, what can considerably reduce the ops. For instance, for a bipartite system $\mathcal{H}_{a}\otimes\math…
We show that the case of two oscillators in a common heat bath cannot be reduced to an effective one body problem. In addition, there is an interaction between the oscillators, even at zero temperature, due to the fluctuations caused in both oscillators by the zero-point oscillations of the electromagnetic field.
Hierarchical equations of motion approach with the Drude-Lorentz spectral density has been widely employed in investigating quantum dissipative phenomena. However, it is often computationally costly for low-temperature systems because a number of Matsubara frequencies are involved. In this note, we examine a prerequisite required for spectral density, and demonstrate that relevant spectral density may significantly reduce the number of Matsubara terms to obtain convergent results for low temperatures.
The hierarchy of equations for reduced density matrices that describes a thermodynamically equilibrium quantum system obtained earlier by the author is investigated in the momentum representation. In the paper it is shown that the use of the momentum representation opens up new opportunities in studies of macroscopic quantum systems both nonsuperfluid and superfluid. It is found that the distribution over momenta in a quantum fluid is not a Bose or Fermi distribution even in the limit of practically noninteracting particles. The distribution looks like a Maxwellian one although, strictly speak…
For states of quantum systems of $N$ particles with harmonic interactions we prove that each reduced density matrix $ρ$ obeys a duality condition. This condition implies duality relations for the eigenvalues $λ_k$ of $ρ$ and relates a harmonic model with length scales $l_1,l_2, \ldots, l_N $ with another one with inverse lengths $1/l_1, 1/l_2,\ldots, 1/l_N$. Entanglement entropies and correlation functions inherit duality from $ρ$. Self-duality can only occur for noninteracting particles in an isotropic harmonic trap.
We report the experimental study of a harmonic oscillator in the relativistic regime. The oscillator is composed of Bose-condensed lithium atoms in the third band of an optical lattice, which have an energy-momentum relation nearly identical to that of a massive relativistic particle, with an effective mass reduced below the bare value and a greatly reduced effective speed of light. Imaging the shape of oscillator trajectories at velocities up to 98% of the effective speed of light reveals a crossover from sinusoidal to nearly photon-like propagation. The existence of a maximum velocity causes…
To investigate a system coupled to a harmonic oscillator bath, we propose a new approach based on a phonon number representation of the bath. Compared to the method of the hierarchical equations of motion, the new approach is computationally much less expensive in a sense that a reduced density matrix is obtained by calculating the time evolution of vectors, instead of matrices, which enables one to deal with large dimensional systems. As a benchmark test, we consider a quantum damped harmonic oscillator, and show that the exact results can be well reproduced. In addition to the reduced densit…
We investigate circuit complexity to characterize chaos in multiparticle quantum systems. In the process, we take a stride to analyze open quantum systems by using complexity. We propose a new diagnostic of quantum chaos from complexity based on the reduced density matrix by exploring different types of quantum circuits. Through explicit calculations on a toy model of two coupled harmonic oscillators, where one or both of the oscillators are inverted, we demonstrate that the evolution of complexity is a possible diagnostic of chaos.
Transitions of many-particle quantum systems between distinct phases at absolute-zero temperature, known as quantum phase transitions, require an exacting treatment of particle correlations. In this work, we present a general quantum-computing approach to quantum phase transitions that exploits the geometric structure of reduced density matrices. While typical approaches to quantum phase transitions examine discontinuities in the order parameters, the origin of phase transitions -- their order parameters and symmetry breaking -- can be understood geometrically in terms of the set of two-partic…
Given a random quantum state of multiple distinguishable or indistinguishable particles, we provide an effective method, rooted in symplectic geometry, to compute the joint probability distribution of the eigenvalues of its one-body reduced density matrices. As a corollary, by taking the distribution's support, which is a convex moment polytope, we recover a complete solution to the one-body quantum marginal problem. We obtain the probability distribution by reducing to the corresponding distribution of diagonal entries (i.e., to the quantitative version of a classical marginal problem), which…
Understanding the roles of the temporary and spatial structures of quantum functional noise in open multilevel quantum molecular systems attracts a lot of theoretical interests. I want to establish a rigorous and general framework for functional quantum noises from the constructive and computational perspectives, $\it{i.e.}$ how to generate the random trajectories to reproduce the kernel and path ordering of the influence functional with effective Monte Carlo methods for arbitrary spectral densities. This construction approach aims to unify the existing stochastic models to rigorously describe…
