In the Jaynes-Cummings model a two-level atom interacts with a single-mode electromagnetic field. Quantum mechanics predicts collapses and revivals in the probability that a measurement will show the atom to be excited at various times after the initial preparation of the atom and field. In retrodictive quantum mechanics we seek the probability that the atom was prepared in a particular state given the initial state of the field and the outcome of a later measurement on the atom. Although this is not simply the time reverse of the usual predictive problem, we demonstrate in this paper that retrodictive collapses and revivals also exist. We highlight the differences between predictive and retrodictive evolutions and describe an interesting situation where the prepared state is essentially unretrodictable.
Quantum probes using $N$ uncorrelated particles give a limit on the measurement sensitivity referred to as the standard quantum limit (SQL). The SQL, however, can be overcome by exploiting quantum entangled states, such as spin squeezed states. We report generation of a quantum state, that surpasses the SQL for probing of the collective spin of $10^{11}$ $\text{Rb}$ atoms contained in a vapor cell. The state is prepared and verified by sequences of stroboscopic quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements, and we apply the theory of past quantum states to obtain the spin state information from th…
In quantum mechanics, the Heisenberg uncertainty relation presents an ultimate limit to the precision by which one can predict the outcome of position and momentum measurements on a particle. Heisenberg explicitly stated this relation for the prediction of "hypothetical future measurements", and it does not describe the situation where knowledge is available about the system both earlier and later than the time of the measurement. We study what happens under such circumstances with an atomic ensemble containing $10^{11}$ $^{87}\text{Rb}$ atoms, initiated nearly in the ground state in presence …
Squeezing of atomic resonance fluorescence is shown to be optimized by a properly designed environment, which can be realized by a quasi-resonant cavity. Optimal squeezing is achieved if the atomic coherence is maximized, corresponding to a pure atomic quantum state. The atomic-state purification is achieved by the backaction of the cavity field on the atom, which increases the atomic coherence and decreases the atomic excitation. For realistic cavities, the coupling of the atom to the cavity field yields a purity of the atomic state of more than 99%. The fragility of squeezing against dephasi…
Atomic Interferometer has two quantum unitary gates that must be realized for quantum sensing purposes from atomic gravimeter and atomic interferometer gyroscope. An optimal cost function which define the distance between two unitary operator is defines and based on it a pulse based stochastic gradient descent algorithm is derived for implementation of atomic mirror and atomic beam-splitter gates. By using numerical optimal control for those gate realization, we achieved to gate fidelity of 0.995 and 0.998 for mirror and beam-splitter gates, respectively. For this research, a two-level atomic …
We propose, in a Ramsey interferometer, to cool the cavity field to its ground state, starting from a thermal distribution by a dispersive atom-field coupling followed by an atomic postselection. We also analyze the effect of the cavity and atomic losses. The proposed experiment can be realized with realistic parameters with high fidelity.
In spontaneous Raman process in atomic cell at high gain, both the Stokes field and the accompanying collective atomic excitation (atomic spin wave) are coherent. We find that, due to the spontaneous nature of the process, the phases of the Stokes field and the atomic spin wave change randomly from one realization to another but are anti-correlated. The phases of the atomic ensembles are read out via another Raman process at a later time, thus realizing phase memory in atoms. The observation of phase correlation between the Stokes field and the collective atomic excitations is an important ste…
We propose a scheme to deterministically generate atomic two-dimensional and three-dimensional entangled states by passing two 87Rb atoms through a high-Q bi-mode cavity alternately. The scheme is insensitive to atomic spontaneous decay because of large atom-cavity detuning, the influence of cavity decay is also discussed. Our strictly numerical simulation shows our proposal is good enough to demonstrate the generation of atomic entanglement with high fidelity and within the current experimental technologies.
We revisit the decoherence of the atomic state in the resonant Jaynes-Cummings model with the field initially being in a coherent state. We show that the purity of the atom exhibits oscillating Gaussian dependence on the time with a width independent of the initial atomic state. It is also shown that when the atom and the coherent state match each other in phase, the atomic decoherence is Gaussian time dependence.
We propose an atomic quantum transistor based on exchange by virtual photons between two atomic systems through the control gate-atom. The quantum transistor is realized in two QED cavities coupled in nano-optical scheme. We have found novel effect in quantum dynamics of coupled three-node atomic system which provides control-SWAP(θ) processes in quantum transistor operation. New possibilities of quantum entanglement in an example of bright and dark qubit states have been demonstrated for quantum transport in the atomic chain. Potentialities of the proposed nano-optical design for quantum comp…
We study the dynamics of a single control atom and an atomic sample interacting with a nonresonant cavity mode. The control atom is driven by an auxiliary classical field. Under certain conditions, the coherent energy exchange between the control atom and the atomic sample induced by the cavity mode is described by the Jaynes-Cummings model. The idea provides a possibility for quantum-state engineering and reconstruction for collective atomic modes.
We find analytical solutions to the evolution of interacting two-level atoms when the master equation is symmetric under the permutation of atomic labels. The master equation includes atomic independent dissipation. The method to obtain the solutions is: First, we use the system symmetries to describe the evolution in an operator space whose dimension grows polynomially with the number of atoms. Second, we expand the solutions in a basis composed of eigenvectors of the dissipative part of the master equation that models the independent dissipation of the atoms. This atomic damping basis is an …
The entanglement of two dipole-coupled atoms with nondegenerate two-photon transitions interacting with two-mode field in lossless cavity has been investigated. It shows that the entanglement is dependent on the initial atomic states. The possibility of considerable growth of atomic entanglement due atomic coherence and dipole-dipole interaction is shown in the case of great mean values of thermal photons.
The influence of photon-momentum recoil on adiabatic population transfer in an atomic three-level lambda system is studied. It is shown that the Doppler frequency shifts, due to atomic motion can play an important role in adiabatic population transfer processes of atomic internal states by a pair of laser fields. For the limiting case of slow atoms ( Doppler shift much smaller than the photon recoil energy) the atoms occupy the same target state regardless of the order of switching of laser fields, while for the case of fast atoms interacting with the intuitive sequence of pulses, the target s…
The advantage of optical bistability (OB) using three-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) atomic system over the two-level system is its controllability, as absorption, dispersion, and optical nonlinearity in one of the atomic transitions can be modified considerably by the field interacting with nearby atomic transitions. This is due to induced atomic coherences generated in such EIT system. The inclusion of near dipole-dipole (NDD) interaction among atoms further modifies absorption, dispersion, and optical nonlinearity of three-level EIT system and the OB can also be contro…
The entanglement, purity and energy of two isolated two-level atoms which are initially prepared in Bell state and each interacts with a thermal cavity field are investigated by considering the atomic motion and the field-mode structure. We achieve the analytical solutions of the atomic qubits by using the algebraic dynamical approach and the influences of the field-mode structure parameter, the strength of the thermal field and the detuning on the entanglement, purity and energy are discussed. We also investigate the state evolution of the atomic qubits based on the entanglement-purity-energy…
We study the entanglement dynamics of strongly driven atoms off-resonantly coupled with cavity fields. We consider conditions characterized not only by the atom-field coupling but also by the atom-field detuning. By studying two different models within the framework of cavity QED, we show that the so-called atomic entanglement sudden death (ESD) always occurs if the atom-field coupling lager than the atom-field detuning, and is independent of the type of initial atomic state.
We described a novel technique that can find the zero-field for unshielded laser-pumped atomic magnetometer using atomic signal itself. By comparing light density of pump beam after atomic vapor cell, it is decided which direction to move the compensation magnetic field and whether to increase or decrease the converging step length. The zero-field is found in less than 18s and the step length after converging is smaller than 10nT, 10nT and 40nT for x, y and z axes, respectively, limited by 50Hz noise in the lab environment.
Ordered atomic arrays trapped in the vicinity of nanoscale waveguides offer original light-matter interfaces, with applications to quantum information and quantum non-linear optics. Here, we study the decay dynamics of a single collective atomic excitation coupled to a waveguide in different configurations. The atoms are arranged as a linear array and only a segment of them is excited to a superradiant mode and emits light into the waveguide. Additional atomic chains placed on one or both sides play a passive role, either reflecting or absorbing this emission. We show that when varying the geo…
We study cooperative single-photon spontaneous emission from N multilevel atoms for different atomic distributions in optical vector theory. Instead of the average approximation for interatomic distance or the continuum approximation (sums over atoms replaced by integrals) for atomic distribution, the positions of every atom are taken into account by numerical calculation. It is shown that the regularity of atomic distribution has considerable influence on cooperative spontaneous emission. For a small atomic sample (compared with radiation wavelength), to obtain strong superradiance not only n…
The observation of Pauli blocking of atomic spontaneous decay via direct measurements of the atomic population requires the use of long-lived atomic gases where quantum statistics, atom recoil and cooperative radiative processes are all relevant. We develop a theoretical framework capable of simultaneously accounting for all these effects in a regime where prior theoretical approaches based on semi-classical non-interacting or interacting frozen atom approximations fail. We apply it to atoms in a single 2D pancake or arrays of pancakes featuring an effective $Λ$ level structure (one excited an…
In this paper, we are interested in studying entropy and dynamics entanglement between a single time dependent three-level atom interacting with one-mode cavity field when the atomic motion is taken into account. An exact analytical solution for the wave function is given by using Schrödinger equation for a specific initial condition. The field entropy of this system is investigated in the non-resonant case. The influences of the detuning parameters and atomic motion on the entanglement degree are examined. We show that both of the detuning parameters and atomic motion play important roles in …
We have developed an efficient approach for treating low-dimensional few-body processes in confined geometry of atomic and hybrid atom-ion traps. It based on the split-operator method in 2D discrete-variable representation (DVR) suggested by V. Melezhik for integration of the few-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We give a brief review of the application to resonant ultracold atomic processes and discuss our latest results on hybrid atomic-ion systems. Prospects for the application of the method in other hot problems of the physics of low-dimensional few-particle systems are als…
We study the generation of atom vortex beams in the case where an atomic wave-packet, moving in free space, is diffracted from a properly tailored light mask with a spiral transverse profile. We show how such a diffraction scheme could lead to the production of an atomic Ferris wheel beam.
Atomically precise donor-based quantum devices are a promising candidate for scalable solid-state quantum computing. Atomically precise design and implementation of the tunnel coupling in these devices is essential to realize gate-tunable exchange coupling, and electron spin initialization and readout. Current efforts in atomically precise lithography have enabled deterministic placement of single dopant atoms into the Si lattice with sub-nm precision. However, critical challenges in atomically precise fabrication have meant systematic, atomic-scale control of the tunneling coupling has not be…
It is shown how possible corrections to ordinary quantum mechanics described by the Lindblad equation might be detected by exploiting the great precision of atomic clocks.
We report on theoretical and numerical study of propagation of atomic beams crossing a detuned standing-wave laser beam in the geometric optics limit. The interplay between external and internal atomic degrees of freedom is used to manipulate the atomic motion along the optical axis by light. By adjusting the atom-laser detuning, we demonstrate how to focus, split and scatter atomic beams in a real experiment. The novel effect of chaotic scattering of atoms at a regular near-resonant standing wave is found numerically and explained qualitatively. Some applications of the effects found are disc…
Approximate probabilities of formation of various atoms and ions in different bound states are determined for the exothermic nuclear $(n,{}^{6}$Li$;t,{}^{4}$He)-reaction of atomic lithium-6 with slow neutrons. In our calculations of the final state probabilities we have assumed that the incident lithium atom is in its ground (doublet) atomic ${}^2S(L = 0)-$state. It is straightforward to generalize our analysis to other bound states of the three-electron Li atom.
Spontaneous decay of an excited atomic state is a fundamental process that originates from the interaction between matter and vacuum modes of the electromagnetic field. The rate of decay can thus be engineered by modifying the density of final states of the joint atom-photon system. Imposing suitable boundary conditions on the electromagnetic field has been shown to alter the density of vacuum modes near the atomic transition, resulting in modified atomic decay rates. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of suppression of atomic radiative decay by reducing the density of availab…
Atomic interference experiments test the universality of the coupling between matter-energy and gravity at different spacetime points, thus being in principle able to probe possible violations of the universality of the gravitational redshift (UGR). In this contribution, we introduce a UGR violation model and then discuss UGR tests performed by atomic clocks and atom interferometers on the same footing. We present a large class of atom-interferometric geometries which are sensitive to violations of UGR.
