A system of interacting qubits can be viewed as a non-i.i.d quantum information source. A possible model of such a source is provided by a quantum spin system, in which spin-1/2 particles located at sites of a lattice interact with each other. We establish the limit for the compression of information from such a source and show that asymptotically it is given by the von Neumann entropy rate. Our result can be viewed as a quantum analog of Shannon's noiseless coding theorem for a class of non - i.i.d. quantum information sources.
We establish the ultimate limits to the compression of sequences of identically prepared qubits. The limits are determined by Holevo's information quantity and are attained through use of the optimal universal cloning machine, which finds here a novel application to quantum Shannon theory.
Data compression is a ubiquitous aspect of modern information technology, and the advent of quantum information raises the question of what types of compression are feasible for quantum data, where it is especially relevant given the extreme difficulty involved in creating reliable quantum memories. We present a protocol in which an ensemble of quantum bits (qubits) can in principle be perfectly compressed into exponentially fewer qubits. We then experimentally implement our algorithm, compressing three photonic qubits into two. This protocol sheds light on the subtle differences between quant…
Two-Ievel (qubit) clock systems are often used to perform precise measurement of time. In this work, we propose a compression protocol for $n$ identically prepared states of qubit clocks. The protocol faithfully encodes the states into $(1/2)\log n$ qubits and $(1/2)\log n$ classical bits and works even in the presence of noise. If the purity of the clock states is fixed, $(1/2)\log n$ qubits are sufficient. We also prove that this protocol requires the minimum amount of total memory among all protocols with vanishing error in the large $n$ limit.
We provide a framework for one-shot quantum rate distortion coding, in which the goal is to determine the minimum number of qubits required to compress quantum information as a function of the probability that the distortion incurred upon decompression exceeds some specified level. We obtain a one-shot characterization of the minimum qubit compression size for an entanglement-assisted quantum rate-distortion code in terms of the smooth max-information, a quantity previously employed in the one-shot quantum reverse Shannon theorem. Next, we show how this characterization converges to the known …
Global unitary transformations (OPTSWAPS) that optimally increase the bias of any mixed computation qubit in a quantum system -- represented by a diagonal density matrix -- towards a particular state of the computational basis which, in effect, increases its purity are presented. Quantum circuits that achieve this by implementing the above data compression technique -- a generalization of the 3B-Comp used before -- are described. These circuits enable purity increment in the computation qubit by maximally transferring part of its von Neumann or Shannon entropy to any number of surrounding qubi…
We consider the problem of optimal processing of quantum information at incomplete experimental data characterizing the quantum source. In particular, we then prove that for one-qubit quantum source the Jaynes principle offers a simple scheme for optimal compression of quantum information. According to the scheme one should process as if the density matrix of the source were actually equal to the matrix of the Jaynes state.
We propose a scheme for an exact efficient transformation of a tensor product state of many identically prepared qubits into a state of a logarithmically small number of qubits. Using a quadratic number of elementary quantum gates we transform N identically prepared qubits into a state, which is nontrivial only on the first log(N+1) qubits. This procedure might be useful for quantum memories, as only a small portion of the original qubits has to be stored. Another possible application is in communicating a direction encoded in a set of quantum states, as the compressed state provides a high-ef…
We present one-shot compression protocols that optimally encode ensembles of $N$ identically prepared mixed states into $O(\log N)$ qubits. In contrast to the case of pure-state ensembles, we find that the number of encoding qubits drops down discontinuously as soon as a nonzero error is tolerated and the spectrum of the states is known with sufficient precision. For qubit ensembles, this feature leads to a 25% saving of memory space. Our compression protocols can be implemented efficiently on a quantum computer.
We revisit the task of visible compression of an ensemble of quantum states with entanglement assistance in the one-shot setting. The protocols achieving the best compression use many more qubits of shared entanglement than the number of qubits in the states in the ensemble. Other compression protocols, with potentially larger communication cost, have entanglement cost bounded by the number of qubits in the given states. This motivates the question as to whether entanglement is truly necessary for compression, and if so, how much of it is needed. Motivated by questions in communication complex…
We propose a method to witness entanglement between two continuous-variable systems in a Gaussian state. Its key ingredient is a local lossy state transfer from the original spatially separated systems onto two spatially separated qubits. The qubits are initially in a pure product state, therefore by detecting entanglement between the qubits we witness entanglement between the two original systems. This method greatly simplifies entanglement witnessing in complex systems.
We propose a method for analyzing Berry phase for a multi-qubit system of superconducting charge qubits interacting with a microwave field. By suitably choosing the system parameters and precisely controlling the dynamics, novel connection found between the Berry phase and entanglement creations.
We investigate the thermal entanglement of interacting two qubits. We maximize it by tuning a local Hamiltonian under a given interaction Hamiltonian. We prove that the optimizing local Hamiltonian takes a simple form which dose not depend on the temperature and that the corresponding optimized thermal entanglement decays as $1/(T log T)$ at high temperatures. We also find that at low temperatures the thermal entanglement is maximum without any local Hamiltonians and that the second derivative of the maximized thermal entanglement changes discontinuously at the boundary between the high- and l…
Entanglement and Berry phase are investigated in two interacting qubit systems. The XXZ spin interaction model with a slowly rotating magnetic field is employed for the interaction between the two qubits. We show how the anisotropy of interaction reveals unique relations between the Berry phases and the entanglements for the eigenstates of the system.
Qubit measurement is generally the most error-prone operation that degrades the performance of near-term quantum devices, and the exponential decay of readout fidelity severely impedes the development of large-scale quantum information processing. Given these disadvantages, we present a quantum state readout method, named \textit{compression readout}, that naturally avoids large multi-qubit measurement errors by compressing the quantum state into a single qubit for measurement. Our method generally outperforms direct measurements in terms of accuracy, and the advantage grows with the system si…
We present a simple model which allows us to explain the physical nature of the oscillating entropy. We consider an ensemble of qubits interacting with thermal two-level systems. The entropy of the qubits oscillates between zero and the value of entropy of the thermal systems. We show that the oscillations of the entropy can be clearly explained by the precession of the real or effective spins of the qubits.
Motivated by recent experimental study on coherent dynamics transfer in three interacting atoms or electron spins \cite{Barredo:2015,Rosenfeld:2018}, here we study entanglement entropy transfer in three interacting qubits. We analytically calculate time evolutions of wave function, density matrix and entanglement of the system. We find that initially entangled two qubits may alternatively transfer their entanglement entropy to other two qubit pairs. So that dynamical evolution of three interacting qubits may produce a genuine three-partite entangled state through entanglement entropy transfers…

Quantum autoencoders which aim at compressing quantum information in a low-dimensional latent space lie in the heart of automatic data compression in the field of quantum information. In this paper, we establish an upper bound of the compression rate for a given quantum autoencoder and present a learning control approach for training the autoencoder to achieve the maximal compression rate. The upper bound of the compression rate is theoretically proven using eigen-decomposition and matrix differentiation, which is determined by the eigenvalues of the density matrix representation of the input …
Quantum computing draws huge attention due to its faster computational capability compared to classical computing to represent and compress the classical image data into the quantum domain. The main idea of quantum domain representation is to convert pixel intensities and their coordinates i.e. state label preparation using quantum bits i.e. Qubits. For a bigger size image, the state label preparation takes more Qubits. To address more Qubits issues, a novel SCMNEQR (State Connection Modification Novel Enhanced Quantum Representation) approach has been proposed that uses fewer qubits to map th…
Quantum circuit simulations are critical for evaluating quantum algorithms and machines. However, the number of state amplitudes required for full simulation increases exponentially with the number of qubits. In this study, we leverage data compression to reduce memory requirements, trading computation time and fidelity for memory space. Specifically, we develop a hybrid solution by combining the lossless compression and our tailored lossy compression method with adaptive error bounds at each timestep of the simulation. Our approach optimizes for compression speed and makes sure that errors du…
We study the dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings Model for two level systems (or qubits) interacting with a quantized single mode electromagnetic cavity (or `quantum bus'). We show that there is a time in between the collapse and revival of Rabi oscillations when the state of the qubit sub-system, $| ψ\_{attractor} $, is largely independent of its initial state. This generalizes to many qubits the discovery by Gea-Banacloche for the one qubit case. The qubits in such `attractor' states are not entangled either with the field or among themselves, even if they were in the initial state. Subsequently…
We study the evolution of qubit-environment entanglement, quantified using Negativity, for NV-center spin qubits interacting with an environment of $^{13}$C isotope partially polarized nuclear spins in the diamond lattice. We compare it with the evolution of the Fidelity of environmental states conditional on the pointer states of the qubit, which can serve as a tool to distinguish between entangling and non-entangling decoherence in pure-dephasing scenarios. The two quantities show remarkable agreement during the evolution in a wide range of system parameters, leading to the conclusion that t…
An evolution of a two-level system (qubit) interacting with a single-photon wave packet is analyzed. It is shown that a hierarchy of master equations gives rise to phase covariant qubit evolution. The temporal correlations in the input field induce nontrivial memory effects for the evolution of a qubit. It is shown that in the resonant case whenever time-local generator is regular (does not display singularities) the qubit evolution never displays information backflow. However, in general the generator might be highly singular leading to intricate non-Markovian effects. A detailed analysis of …
We consider generic interacting chain of qubits, which are coupled at the edges to baths of fixed polarizations. We can determine the nonequilibrium steady states, described by the fixed point of the Lindblad Master Equation. Under rather general assumptions about local pumping and interactions, symmetries of the reduced density matrix are revealed. The symmetries drastically restrict the form of the steady density matrices in such a way that an exponentially large subset of one--point and many--point correlation functions are found to vanish. As an example we show how in a Heisenberg spin cha…
We analyze the dynamics of a system qubit interacting by means a sequence of pairwise collisions with an environment consisting of just two qubits. We show that the density operator of the qubits approaches a common time averaged equilibrium state, characterized by large fluctuations, only for a random sequence of collisions. For a regular sequence of collisions the qubitstates of the system and of the reservoir undergo instantaneous periodic oscillations and do not relax to a common state. Furthermore we show that pure bipartite entanglement is developed only when at least two qubits are init…
We address the dynamics of a qubit interacting with a quasi static random classical field having both a longitudinal and a transverse component and described by a Gaussian stochastic process. In particular, we analyze in details the conditions under which the dynamics may be effectively approximated by a unitary operation or a pure dephasing without relaxation.
We propose a method for entangling two non-interacting qubits by measuring their parity indirectly through an intermediate mesoscopic system. The protocol is designed to require only global control and course-grained collective measurement of the mesoscopic system along with local interactions between the target qubits and mesoscopic system. A generalization of the method measures the hamming weight of the qubits' state and probabilistically produces an entangled state by post-selecting on hamming weight one. Our technique provides a new design element that can be integrated into quantum proce…
The Kraus form of the completely positive dynamical maps is appealing from the mathematical and the point of the diverse applications of the open quantum systems theory. Unfortunately, the Kraus operators are poorly known for the two-qubit processes. In this paper, we derive the Kraus operators for a pair of interacting qubit, while the strength of the interaction is arbitrary. One of the qubits is subjected to the x-projection spin measurement. The obtained results are applied to calculate the dynamics of the initial entanglement in the qubits system. We obtain the loss of the correlations in…
The dynamics of two interacting spins coupled to separate bosonic baths is studied. An analytical solution in Born approximation for arbitrary spectral density functions of the bosonic environments is found. It is shown that in the non-Markovian cases concurrence "lives" longer or reaches greater values.
It is suggested to map the qubits into solid state NMR spin system collective states instead of the states of the individual spin. Such an approach introduces the stable computational basis without any additional actions and allows to obtain the universal set of quantum gates, which operation time is determined only by a RF pulse duration.
In this work, we report on a novel quantum gate approximation algorithm based on the application of parametric two-qubit gates in the synthesis process. The utilization of these parametric two-qubit gates in the circuit design allows us to transform the discrete combinatorial problem of circuit synthesis into an optimization problem over continuous variables. The circuit is then compressed by a sequential removal of two-qubit gates from the design, while the remaining building blocks are continuously adapted to the reduced gate structure by iterated learning cycles. We implemented the develope…
A cluster state cannot be a unique ground state of a two-body interacting Hamiltonian. Here, we propose the creation of a cluster state of logical qubits encoded in spin-1/2 particles by adiabatically weakening two-body interactions. The proposal is valid for any spatial dimensional cluster states. Errors induced by thermal fluctuations and adiabatic evolution within finite time can be eliminated ensuring fault-tolerant quantum computing schemes.
Quantum image processing has been a hot topic. The first step of it is to store an image into qubits, which is called quantum image preparation. Different quantum image representations may have different preparation methods. In this paper, we use GQIR (the generalized quantum image representation) to represent an image, and try to decrease the operations used in preparation, which is also known as quantum image compression. Our compression scheme is based on JPEG (named from its inventor: the Joint Photographic Experts Group) --- the most widely used method for still image compression in class…
A generic approach for compiling any classical block compression algorithm into a quantum block compression algorithm is presented. Using this technique, compression asymptoticaly approaching the von Neumann entropy of a qubit source can be achieved. The automatically compiled algorithms are competitive (in time and space complexity) with hand constructed quantum block compression algorithms.
We study the quantum speed limit time for a two-qubit system interacts with indepen- dent and common reservoir. The system is initially prepared in a class of X-structure density matrix, namely the extended Werner-like states (EWL). We demonstrate that when reservoir enters to the non-Markovian regime, the quantum speed limit time de- crease more sharply in a common reservoir than independent reservoirs.
The Zeno effect occurs in quantum systems when a very strong measurement is applied, which can alter the dynamics in non-trivial ways. Despite being dissipative, the dynamics stay coherent within any degenerate subspaces of the measurement. Here we show that such a measurement can turn a single-qubit operation into a two- or multi-qubit entangling gate, even in a non-interacting system. We demonstrate this gate between two effectively non-interacting transmon qubits. Our Zeno gate works by imparting a geometric phase on the system, conditioned on it lying within a particular non-local subspace…

We analyse a system of two interacting spin-qubits subjected to a Landau-Majorana-Stückelberg-Zener (LMSZ) ramp. We prove that LMSZ transitions of the two spin-qubits are possible without an external transverse static field since its role is played by the coupling between the spin-qubits. We show how such a physical effect could be exploited to estimate the strength of the interaction between the two spin-qubits and to generate entangled states of the system by appropriately setting the slope of the ramp. Moreover, the study of effects of the coupling parameters on the time-behaviour of the en…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme for implementation of a maximally entangling quantum controlled-Z gate between two weakly interacting systems. We conditionally enhance the interqubit coupling by quantum interference. Both before and after the interqubit interaction, one of the qubits is coherently coupled to an auxiliary quantum system, and finally it is projected back onto qubit subspace. We experimentally verify the practical feasibility of this technique by using a linear optical setup with weak interferometric coupling between single-photon qubits. Our procedure is unive…
We study the dynamics of entanglement in a two-qubit system interacting with a squeezed thermal bath via a dissipative system-reservoir interaction with the system and reservoir assumed to be in a separable initial state. The resulting entanglement is studied by making use of a recently introduced measure of mixed state entanglement via a probability density function which gives a statistical and geometrical characterization of entanglement by exploring the entanglement content in the various subspaces spanning the two-qubit Hilbert space. We also make an application of the two-qubit dissipati…

Recent work suggests that quantum machine learning techniques can be used for classical image classification by encoding the images in quantum states and using a quantum neural network for inference. However, such work has been restricted to very small input images, at most 4 x 4, that are unrealistic and cannot even be accurately labeled by humans. The primary difficulties in using larger input images is that hitherto-proposed encoding schemes necessitate more qubits than are physically realizable. We propose a framework to classify larger, realistic images using quantum systems. Our approach…
A two-interacting-qubit quantum Rabi-like model with vanishing transverse fields on the qubit-pair is studied. Independently of the coupling regime, this model can be exactly and unitarily reduced to two independent single-spin quantum Rabi models, where the spin-spin coupling plays the role of the transverse field. This transformation and the analytical treatment of the single-spin quantum Rabi model provide the key to prove the integrability of our model. The existence of different first-order quantum phase transitions, characterized by discontinuous two-spin magnetization, mean photon numbe…
The proper functioning of some micro-fabricated novel quantum devices, such as superconducting resonators and qubits, is severely affected by the presence of parasitic structural material defects known as tunneling two-level-systems (TLS). Recent experiments have reported unambiguous evidence of the strong interaction between individual (coherent) TLS using strain-assisted spectroscopy. This work provides an alternative and simple theoretical insight that illustrates how to obtain the spectral response of such strongly interacting defects residing inside the amorphous tunnel barrier of a qubit…
An open question in designing superconducting quantum circuits is how best to reduce the full circuit Hamiltonian which describes their dynamics to an effective two-level qubit Hamiltonian which is appropriate for manipulation of quantum information. Despite advances in numerical methods to simulate the spectral properties of multi-element superconducting circuits, the literature lacks a consistent and effective method of determining the effective qubit Hamiltonian. Here we address this problem by introducing a novel local basis reduction method. This method does not require any ad hoc assumpt…
The dynamics of a single qubit interacting by a sequence of pairwise collisions with an environment consisting of just two more qubits is analyzed. Each collision is modeled in terms of a random unitary operator with a uniform probability distribution described by the uniform Haar measure. We show that the purity of the system qubit as well as the bipartite and the tripartite entanglement reach time averaged equilibrium values characterized by large instantaneous fluctuations. These equilibrium values are independent of the order of collision among the qubits. The relaxation to equilibrium is a…
In this work we introduce the many-body synchronization of an interacting qubit ensemble which allows one to switch dynamically from many-body-localized (MBL) to an ergodic state. We show that applying of $π$-pulses with altering phases, one can effectively suppress the MBL phase and, hence, eliminate qubits disorder. The findings are based on the analysis of the Loschmidt echo dynamics which shows a transition from a power-law decay to more rapid one indicating the dynamical MBL-to-ergodic transition. The technique does not require to know the microscopic details of the disorder.
We reveal the existence of polariton soliton solutions in the array of weakly coupled optical cavities, each containing an ensemble of interacting qubits. An effective complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived in the continuum limit taking into account the effects of cavity field dissipation and qubit dephasing. We have shown that an enhancement of the induced nonlinearity can be achieved by two order of the magnitude with a negative interaction strength which implies a large negative qubit-field detuning as well. Bright solitons are found to be supported under perturbations only in the uppe…
Interaction among the qubits are basis to many quantum logic operations. We report how such inter-qubit interactions can lead to new features, in the form of bright and dark periods in the entanglement dynamics of two qubits subject to environmental perturbations. These features are seen to be precursors to the well known phenomenon of sudden death of entanglement [Yu $&$ Eberly, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 140404 (2004)] for noninteracting qubits. Further we find that the generation of bright and dark periods are generic and occur for wide varieties of the models of environment. We present exp…
We solve the fundamental quantum error correction problem for bi-unitary channels on two-qubit Hilbert space. By solving an algebraic compression problem, we construct qubit codes for such channels on arbitrary dimension Hilbert space, and identify correctable codes for Pauli-error models not obtained by the stabilizer formalism. This is accomplished through an application of a new tool for error correction in quantum computing called the ``higher-rank numerical range''. We describe its basic properties and discuss possible further applications.
There is current interest in investigating which variables play an important role in the physical processes with an open composite quan- tum system that ranges from the foundational issues to the tasks of diverse applications in quantum physics and technology. In this paper we contrast the local versus the collective classical-like behavior of a pair of interacting qubits immersed in the mutually independent thermal baths. The qubits can be locally subjected to any of the standard, microscopically modelled, generalized amplitude damping and phase damping channel, as well as to the recently int…
