The von Neumann entropy and the subentropy of a mixed quantum state are upper and lower bounds, respectively, on the accessible information of any ensemble consistent with the given mixed state. Here we define and investigate a set of quantities intermediate between entropy and subentropy.
Subentropy is an entropy-like quantity that arises in quantum information theory; for example, it provides a tight lower bound on the accessible information for pure state ensembles, dual to the von Neumann entropy upper bound in Holevo's theorem. Here we establish a series of properties of subentropy, paralleling the well-developed analogous theory for von Neumann entropy. Further, we show that subentropy is a lower bound for min-entropy. We introduce a notion of conditional subentropy and show that it can be used to provide an upper bound for the guessing probability of any classical-quantum…
We use complex contour integral techniques to study the entropy H and subentropy Q as functions of the elementary symmetric polynomials, revealing a series of striking properties. In particular for these variables, derivatives of -Q are equal to derivatives of H of one higher order and the first derivatives of H and Q are seen to be completely monotone functions. It then follows that exp (-H) and exp(-Q) are Laplace transforms of infinitely divisible probability distributions.
Entropy and other fundamental quantities of information theory are customarily expressed and manipulated as functions of probabilities. Here we study the entropy H and subentropy Q as functions of the elementary symmetric polynomials in the probabilities, and reveal a series of remarkable properties. Derivatives of all orders are shown to satisfy a complete monotonicity property. H and Q themselves become multivariate Bernstein functions and we derive the density functions of their Levy-Khintchine representations. We also show that H and Q are Pick functions in each symmetric polynomial variab…
Compact expressions for the average subentropy and coherence are obtained for random mixed states that are generated via various probability measures. Surprisingly, our results show that the average subentropy of random mixed states approaches to the maximum value of the subentropy which is attained for the maximally mixed state as we increase the dimension. In the special case of the random mixed states sampled from the induced measure via partial tracing of random bipartite pure states, we establish the typicality of the relative entropy of coherence for random mixed states invoking the conc…
We propose to quantify the entanglement of pure states of $N \times N$ bipartite quantum system by defining its Husimi distribution with respect to $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ coherent states. The Wehrl entropy is minimal if and only if the pure state analyzed is separable. The excess of the Wehrl entropy is shown to be equal to the subentropy of the mixed state obtained by partial trace of the bipartite pure state. This quantity, as well as the generalized (R{é}nyi) subentropies, are proved to be Schur--convex, so they are entanglement monotones and may be used as alternative measures of entanglement…
Various measures have been suggested recently for quantifying the coherence of a quantum state with respect to a given basis. We first use two of these, the l_1-norm and relative entropy measures, to investigate tradeoffs between the coherences of mutually unbiased bases. Results include relations between coherence, uncertainty and purity; tight general bounds restricting the coherences of mutually unbiased bases; and an exact complementarity relation for qubit coherences. We further define the average coherence of a quantum state. For the l_1-norm measure this is related to a natural 'coheren…
Shannon's entropy power inequality (EPI) can be viewed as a statement of concavity of an entropic function of a continuous random variable under a scaled addition rule: $$f(\sqrt{a}\,X + \sqrt{1-a}\,Y) \ge a f(X) + (1-a) f(Y) \quad \forall \, a \in [0,1].$$ Here, $X$ and $Y$ are continuous random variables and the function $f$ is either the differential entropy or the entropy power. König and Smith [arXiv:1205.3409] and De Palma, Mari, and Giovannetti [arXiv:1402.0404] obtained quantum analogues of these inequalities for continuous-variable quantum systems, where $X$ and $Y$ are replaced by bo…
The linear entropy, the von Neumann entropy and the atomic Wehrl entropy are frequently used to quantify entanglement in the quantum systems. These relations provide typical information on the entanglement in the Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM). In this Letter, we explain the origin of this analytically and derive a closed form for the atomic Wehrl entropy. Moreover, we show that it is more convenient to use the Bloch sphere radius for quantifying entanglement in the JCM instead of these entropic relations.
In this paper, we analyze the relationship between entropy and information in the context of the mixing process of two identical ideal gases. We will argue that entropy has a special information-based feature that is enfolded in the statistical entropy, but the second law does not include it directly. Therefore, in some given processes in thermodynamics where there is no matter and energy interaction between the system and environment, the state of the system may go towards a situation of lower probability to increase observer's information in environment. This is a kind of an information-base…
We study the relations between the averaged linear entropy production in periodically measured quantum systems and ergodic properties of their classical counterparts. Quantized linear automorphisms of the torus, both classically chaotic and regular ones, are used as examples. Numerical calculations show different entropy production regimes depending on the relation between the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and the measurement entropy. The hypothesis of free independence relations between the dynamics and measurement proposed to explain the initial constant and maximal entropy production is tested n…
We employ the relative entropy as a measure to quantify the difference of eigenmodes between Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems in elliptic optical microcavities. We have found that the average value of the relative entropy in the range of the collective Lamb shift is large, while that in the range of self-energy is small. Furthermore, the weak and strong interactions in the non-Hermitian system exhibit rather different behaviors in term of the relative entropy, and thus it displays an obvious exchange of eigenmodes in the elliptic microcavity.
In the theory of open quantum systems interaction is a fundamental concepts in the review of the dynamics of open quantum systems. Correlation, both classical and quantum one, is generated due to interaction between system and environment. Here, we recall the quantity which well known as total entropy production. Appearance of total entropy production is due to the entanglement production between system an environment. In this work, we discuss about the role of the total entropy production for detecting non-Markovianity. By utilizing the relation between total entropy production and total corr…
This document expands upon the relationship between discrete and continuous entropy given in (Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 130407), \Violating Continuous Variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering with Discrete Measurements". We provide a detailed derivation for the inequality relating the continuous conditional entropy to its discrete approximation, and show how this connection works between discrete and continuous entropic quantities in general. In addition, we use this connection to show how to derive the continuous variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering inequality with discrete measurements as s…
We show that the entropy of entanglement is sensitive to the coherent quantum phase transition between normal and super-radiant regions of a system of a finite number of three-level atoms interacting in a dipolar approximation with a one-mode electromagnetic field. The atoms are treated as semi-distinguishable using different cooperation numbers and representations of SU(3), variables which are relevant to the sensitivity of the entropy with the transition. The results are computed for all three possible configurations (Ξ, Λ and V ) of the three-level atoms.
We discuss the Casimir effect between two identical, parallel slabs, emphasizing the role of dissipation and temperature. Starting from quite general assumptions, we analyze the behavior of the Casimir entropy in the limit T->0 and link it to the behavior of the slab's reflection coefficients at low frequencies. We also derive a formula in terms of a sum over modes, valid for dissipative slabs that can be interpreted in terms of a damped quantum oscillator.
As two of the most important entanglement measures--the entanglement of formation and the entanglement of distillation--have so far been limited to bipartite settings, the study of other entanglement measures for multipartite systems appears necessary. Here, connections between two other entanglement measures--the relative entropy of entanglement and the geometric measure of entanglement--are investigated. It is found that for arbitrary pure states the latter gives rise to a lower bound on the former. For certain pure states, some bipartite and some multipartite, this lower bound is saturated,…
Relations between Shannon entropy and Renyi entropies of integer order are discussed. For any N-point discrete probability distribution for which the Renyi entropies of order two and three are known, we provide an lower and an upper bound for the Shannon entropy. The average of both bounds provide an explicit extrapolation for this quantity. These results imply relations between the von Neumann entropy of a mixed quantum state, its linear entropy and traces.
Previously proposed measures of entanglement, such as entanglement of formation and assistance, are shown to be special cases of the relative entropy of entanglement. The difference between these measures for an ensemble of mixed states is shown to depend on the availability of classical information about particular members of the ensemble. Based on this, relations between relative entropy of entanglement and mutual information are derived.
In this article we study relationship between three measures of distinguishability of quantum states called as divergence, relative entropy and the substate property.
The amount of information generated by a discrete time stochastic processes in a single step can be quantified by the entropy rate. We investigate the differences between two discrete time walk models, the discrete time quantum walk and the classical random walk in terms of entropy rate. We develop analytical methods to calculate and approximate it. This allows us to draw conclusions about the differences between classical stochastic and quantum processes in terms of the classical information theory.
In this paper, we explore the emergence of the Wigner entropy production rate in the stationary state of a two-mode Gaussian system. The interacting modes dissipate into different local thermal baths. Also, one of the bosonic modes evolves into the squeezed-thermal state because of the parametric amplification process. Using the Heisenberg-Langevin approach, combined with quantum phase space formulation, we get an analytical expression for the steady-state Wigner entropy production rate. It contains two key terms. The first one is an Onsager-like expression that describes heat flow within the …
We calculate the Casimir energy and entropy for two perfect metal spheres in the large and short separation limit. We obtain nonmonotonic behavior of the Helmholtz free energy with separation and temperature, leading to parameter ranges with negative entropy, and also nonmonotonic behavior of the entropy with temperature and with the separation between the spheres. The appearance of this anomalous behavior of the entropy is discussed as well as its thermodynamic consequences.
Similarity between quantum mechanics and thermodynamics is discussed. It is found that if the Clausius equality is imposed on the Shannon entropy and the analogue of the heat quantity, then the value of the Shannon entropy comes to formally coincide with that of the von Neumann entropy of the canonical density matrix, and pure-state quantum mechanics apparently transmutes into quantum thermodynamics. The corresponding quantum Carnot cycle of a simple two-state model of a particle confined in a one-dimensional infinite potential well is studied, and its efficiency is shown to be identical to th…
Thermodynamic entropy, as defined by Clausius, characterizes macroscopic observations of a system based on phenomenological quantities such as temperature and heat. In contrast, information-theoretic entropy, introduced by Shannon, is a measure of uncertainty. In this Letter, we connect these two notions of entropy, using an axiomatic framework for thermodynamics [Lieb, Yngvason, Proc. Roy. Soc.(2013)]. In particular, we obtain a direct relation between the Clausius entropy and the Shannon entropy, or its generalisation to quantum systems, the von Neumann entropy. More generally, we find that …
We show that the main difference between classical and quantum systems can be understood in terms of information entropy. Classical systems can be considered the ones where the internal dynamics can be known with arbitrary precision while quantum systems can be considered the ones where the internal dynamics cannot be accessed at all. As information entropy can be used to characterize how much the state of the whole system identifies the state of its parts, classical systems can have arbitrarily small information entropy while quantum systems cannot. This provides insights that allow us to und…
The aim of this work is to compute the entanglement entropy of real and virtual particles by rewriting the generating functional of $ϕ^{4}$ theory as a mean value between states and observables defined through the correlation functions. Then the von Neumann definition of entropy can be applied to these quantum states and in particular, for the partial traces taken over the internal or external degrees of freedom. This procedure can be done for each order in the perturbation expansion showing that the entanglement entropy for real and virtual particles behaves as $\ln (m_{0})$. In particular, e…
We study the change in topological entanglement entropy that occurs when a two-dimensional system in a topologically ordered phase undergoes a transition to another such phase due to the formation of a Bose condensate. We also consider the topological entanglement entropy of systems with domains in different topological phases, and of phase boundaries between these domains. We calculate the topological entropy of these interfaces and derive two fundamental relations between the interface topological entropy and the bulk topological entropies on both sides of the interface.
We generalize our results in paper I in this series to quantum channels between general v. Neumann algebras, proving the approximate recoverability of states which undergo a small change in relative entropy through the channel. To this end, we derive a strengthened form of the quantum data processing inequality for the change in relative entropy of two states under a channel between two v. Neumann algebras. Compared to the usual inequality, there is an explicit lower bound involving the fidelity between the original state and a recovery channel.
In order to understand the Landau-Lifshitz conjecture on the relationship between quantum measurements and the thermodynamic second law, we discuss the notion of ``diabatic'' and ``adiabatic'' forces exerted by the quantum object on the classical measurement apparatus. The notion of heat and work in measurements is made manifest in this approach, and the relationship between information entropy and thermodynamic entropy is explored.
We investigate the von Neumann entropy of a block of subsystem for the valence-bond solid (VBS) state with general open boundary conditions. We show that the effect of the boundary on the von Neumann entropy decays exponentially fast in the distance between the subsystem considered and the boundary sites. Further, we show that as the size of the subsystem increases, its von Neumann entropy exponentially approaches the summation of the von Neumann entropies of the two ends, the exponent being related to the size. In contrast to critical systems, where boundary effects to the von Neumann entropy…
Fidelity and relative entropy are two significant quantities in quantum information theory. We study the quantum fidelity and relative entropy under unitary orbits. The maximal and minimal quantum fidelity and relative entropy between two unitary orbits are explicitly derived. The potential applications in quantum computation and information processing are discussed.
In this paper we discuss behaviors of entanglement entropy between two interacting CFTs and its holographic interpretation using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We explicitly perform analytical calculations of entanglement entropy between two free scalar field theories which are interacting with each other in both static and time-dependent ways. We also conjecture a holographic calculation of entanglement entropy between two interacting $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theories by introducing a minimal surface in the S$^5$ direction, instead of the AdS$_5$ direction. This offers a possible general…
The study of black hole physics revealed a fundamental connection between thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and gravity. Today, it is known that black holes are thermodynamical objects with well-defined temperature and entropy. Although black hole radiance gives us the mechanism from which we can associate a well-defined temperature to the black hole, the origin of its entropy remains a mystery. Here we investigate how the quantum fluctuations from the fields that render the black hole its temperature contribute to its entropy. By using the exact renormalization group equation for a self-inte…
We present a universal relation between the flow of a Renyi entropy and the full counting statistics of energy transfers. We prove the exact relation for a flow to a system in thermal equilibrium that is weakly coupled to an arbitrary time-dependent and non-equilibrium system. The exact correspondence, given by this relation, provides a simple protocol to quantify the flows of Shannon and Renyi entropies from the measurements of energy transfer statistics.
We postulate the existence of universal crossover functions connecting the universal parts of the entanglement entropy to the low temperature thermal entropy in gapless quantum many-body systems. These scaling functions encode the intuition that the same low energy degrees of freedom which control low temperature thermal physics are also responsible for the long range entanglement in the quantum ground state. We demonstrate the correctness of the proposed scaling form and determine the scaling function for certain classes of gapless systems whose low energy physics is described by a conformal …
Entropic measures of complexity are able to quantify the information encoded in complex network structures. Several entropic measures have been proposed in this respect. Here we study the relation between the Shannon entropy and the Von Neumann entropy of networks with a given expected degree sequence. We find in different examples of network topologies that when the degree distribution contains some heterogeneity, an intriguing correlation emerges between the two entropies. This result seems to suggest that this kind of heterogeneity is implying an equivalence between a quantum and a classica…
Fidelity is a fundamental and ubiquitous concept in quantum information theory. Fuchs-van de Graaf's inequalities deal with bounding fidelity from above and below. In this paper, we give a lower bound on the quantum fidelity between two states in terms of their trace-norm distance and their max-relative entropy.
Entropy plays a crucial role in characterization of information and entanglement, but it is not a scalar quantity and for many systems it is different for different relativistic observers. Loop quantum gravity predicts the Bekenstein-Hawking term for black hole entropy and logarithmic correction to it. The latter originates in the entanglement between the pieces of spin networks that describe black hole horizon. Entanglement between gravity and matter may restore the unitarity in the black hole evaporation process. If the collapsing matter is assumed to be initially in a pure state, then entro…
We introduce an axiomatic approach to entropies and relative entropies that relies only on minimal information-theoretic axioms, namely monotonicity under mixing and data-processing as well as additivity for product distributions. We find that these axioms induce sufficient structure to establish continuity in the interior of the probability simplex and meaningful upper and lower bounds, e.g., we find that every relative entropy must lie between the Rényi divergences of order $0$ and $\infty$. We further show simple conditions for positive definiteness of such relative entropies and a characte…
We discuss a quantum Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy defined as the entropy production per unit time resulting from coupling the system to a weak, auxiliary bath. The expressions we obtain are fully quantum, but require that the system is such that there is a separation between the Ehrenfest and the correlation timescales. We show that they reduce to the classical definition in the semiclassical limit, one instance where this separation holds. We show a quantum (Pesin) relation between this entropy and the sum of positive eigenvalues of a matrix describing phase-space expansion. Generalizations to th…
We study odd entanglement entropy (odd entropy in short), a candidate of measure for mixed states holographically dual to the entanglement wedge cross section, in two-dimensional free scalar field theories. Our study is restricted to Gaussian states of scale-invariant theories as well as their finite temperature generalizations, for which we show that the odd entropy is a well-defined measure for mixed states. Motivated from holographic results, the difference between odd and von Neumann entropy is also studied. In particular, we show that large amounts of quantum correlations ensure the odd e…
A dispersive medium becomes entangled with zero-point fluctuations in the vacuum. We consider an arbitrary array of material bodies weakly interacting with a quantum field and compute the quantum mutual information between them. It is shown that the mutual information in D dimensions can be mapped to classical thermodynamic entropy in D+1 dimensions. As a specific example, we compute the mutual information both analytically and numerically for a range of separation distances between two bodies in D=2 dimensions and find a logarithmic correction to the area law at short separations. A key advan…

A central concept in the connection between physics and information theory is entropy, which represents the amount of information extracted from the system by the observer performing measurements in an experiment. Indeed, Jaynes' principle of maximum entropy allows to establish the connection between entropy in statistical mechanics and information entropy. In this sense, the dissipated energy in a classical Hamiltonian process, known as the thermodynamic entropy production, is connected to the relative entropy between the forward and backward probability densities. Recently, it was revealed t…
