Optical quantum nondemolition devices can provide essential tools for quantum information processing. Here, we describe several optical interferometers that signal the presence of a single photon in a particular input state without destroying it. We discuss both entanglement-assisted and non-entanglement-assisted interferometers, with ideal and realistic detectors. We found that existing detectors with 88% quantum efficiency and single-photon resolution can yield output fidelities of up to 89%, depending on the input state. Furthermore, we construct expanded protocols to perform QND detections of single photons that leave the polarization invariant. For detectors with 88% efficiency we found polarization-preserving output fidelities of up to 98.5%.
Projective quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement is important for quantum technologies. Here we propose a method for constructing projective QND measurement on a nuclear spin via the measurement of an axillary electron spin in generic electron-nuclear spin systems coupled through weak hyperfine interaction. The key idea is to apply suitable quantum control on the electron to construct a weak QND measurement on the nuclear spin and then cascade a sequence of such measurements into a projective one. We identify a set of tunable parameters to select the QND observables and control the strength …
We derive a measurement operator corresponding to a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble. The quantum measurement operator takes the form of a positive operator valued measure (POVM) and is valid for arbitrary interaction times, initial coherent state amplitudes, and final photon measurement outcomes. We analyze the dependence on various parameters and show that the effect of the QND measurement for short interaction times is to apply a Gaussian modulation of the initial state wavefunction. We derive approximate expressions for the POVM in various limits, such as the s…
We show that continuous quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble is able to improve the precision of frequency estimation even in the presence of independent dephasing acting on each atom. We numerically simulate the dynamics of an ensemble with up to N = 150 atoms initially prepared in a (classical) spin coherent state, and we show that, thanks to the spin squeezing dynamically generated by the measurement, the information obtainable from the continuous photocurrent scales superclassically with respect to the number of atoms N. We provide evidence that such superclassical…
We propose a technique to control the macroscopic collective nuclear spin of a Helium-3 vapor in the quantum regime using light. The scheme relies on metastability exchange collisions to mediate interactions between optically accessible metastable states and the ground-state nuclear spin, giving rise to an effective nuclear spin-light quantum nondemolition interaction of the Faraday form. Our technique enables measurement-based quantum control of nuclear spins, such as the preparation of spin-squeezed states. This, combined with the day-long coherence time of nuclear spin states in Helium-3, o…
We propose a multimeasurement estimation protocol for Quantum Nondemolition (QND) measurements in a Rabi clock interferometer. The method is well suited for current state-of-the-art optical lattice clocks with QND measurement capabilities. The protocol exploits the correlations between multiple non-destructive measurements of the initially prepared coherent spin state. A suitable Gaussian estimator for the clock laser detuning is presented, and an analytic expression for the sensitivity of the protocol is derived. We use this analytic expression to optimise the protocol using available experim…
Quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements of photons is a much pursued endeavor in the field of quantum optics and quantum information processing. Here we propose a novel hybrid optoelectromechanical platform that integrates a cavity system with a hybrid electromechanical probe for QND photon counting. Building upon a mechanical-mode-mediated nonperturbative electro-optical dispersive coupling, our protocol performs the QND photon counting measurement by means of the current-voltage characteristics of the probe. In particular, we show that the peak voltage shift of the differential conductance …
Realization of a room-temperature ultra-fast photon-number-resolving (PNR) quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement would have significant implications for photonic quantum information processing (QIP), enabling, e.g., deterministic quantum computation in discrete-variable architectures, but the requirement for strong coupling has hampered the development of scalable implementations. In this work, we propose and analyze a nonlinear-optical route to PNR QND using quadratic (i.e., $χ^{(2)}$) nonlinear interactions. We show that the coherent pump field driving a phase-mismatched optical parametric…
Dispersive response of atoms trapped near the surface of an optical nanofiber with applications to quantum nondemolition measurement and spin squeezing
We introduce a procedure to generate supersinglets, the multipartite generalization of angular momentum singlet states. A supersinglet is defined as a total spin zero state consisting of $ N $ spin-$ j $ particles. They are highly entangled and have zero spin variance in any direction, and as such are potentially useful for quantum metrology. Our scheme is based on projective measurements that measure the collective spin of the whole spin ensemble. A local unitary rotation is applied conditionally on the measurement outcome, such as to maximize the probability of obtaining spin zero on the sub…
Quantum coupling between mechanical oscillators and atomic gases generating entanglement has been recently experimentally demonstrated using their subsequent interaction with light. The next step is to build a hybrid atom-mechanical quantum gate showing bosonic interference effects of single quanta in the atoms and oscillators. We propose an experimental test of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between single phononic excitation and single collective excitation of atoms using the optical connection between them. A single optical pulse is sufficient to build a hybrid quantum-nondemolition gate to ob…

在[J. C. Howell和J.A. Yeazell,Phys.
