We present a protocol to generate and control quantum entanglement between the states of two subsystems (the system ${\cal S}$) by making measurements on a third subsystem (the monitor ${\cal M}$), interacting with ${\cal S}$. For the sake of comparison we consider first an ideal, or instantaneous projective measurement, as postulated by von Neumann. Then we compare it with the more realistic or generalized measurement procedure based on photocounting on ${\cal M}$. Further we consider that the interaction term (between ${\cal S}$ and ${\cal M}$) contains a quantum nondemolition variable of ${\cal S}$ and discuss the possibility and limitations for reconstructing the initial state of ${\cal S}$ from information acquired by photocounting on ${\cal M}$.
Numerous inequalities involving moments of integrated intensities and revealing nonclassicality and entanglement in bipartite optical fields are derived using the majorization theory, non-negative polynomials, the matrix approach, as well as the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Different approaches for deriving these inequalities are compared. Using the experimental photocount histogram generated by a weak noisy twin beam monitored by a photon-number-resolving iCCD camera the performance of the derived inequalities is compared. A basic set of ten inequalities suitable for monitoring the entanglement…
Numerous non-classicality criteria based on the probabilities of experimental photocount or theoretical photon-number distributions are derived using several approaches. Relations among the derived criteria are revealed and the fundamental criteria are identified. They are grouped into parametric systems that allow the analysis of the non-classicality from different points of view ('local' non-classicality, pairwise character of photon correlations, etc.). Considering their structure, the criteria may be divided into groups that differ in the power to resolve the non-classicality. Quantificati…
We develop the minimal requirements for the complete entanglement quantification of an arbitrary two-mode bipartite Gaussian state via local measurements and a classical communication channel. The minimal set of measurements is presented as a reconstruction protocol of local covariance matrices and no previous knowledge of the state is required but its Gaussian character. The protocol becomes very simple mostly when dealing with Gaussian states transformed to its standard form, since photocounting/intensity measurements define the whole set of entangled states. In addition, conditioned on some…
We present a scheme to control the entanglement sudden birth and death in cavity quantum electrodynamics system, which consists of two noninteracting atoms each locally interacting with its own vacuum field, by applying and adjusting classical driving fields.
The entanglement characteristics including the so-called sudden death effect between two identical two-level atoms trapped in two separate cavities connected by an optical fiber are studied. The results show that the time evolution of entanglement is sensitive not only to the degree of entanglement of the initial state but also to the ratio between cavity-fiber coupling () and atom-cavity coupling (). This means that the entanglement dynamics can be controlled by choosing specific v and g.
We investigate the entanglement dynamics of a quantum system consisting of two-level atoms interacting with vacuum or thermal fields with classical driving fields. We find that the entanglement of the system can be improved by adjusting the classical driving field. The influence of the classical field and the purity of the initial state on the entanglement sudden death is also studied. It is shown that the time of entanglement sudden death can be controlled by the classical driving fields. Particularly, the entanglement sudden death phenomenon will disappear if the classical driving fields are…
Two, non-interacting two-level atoms immersed in a common bath can become mutually entangled when evolving with a Markovian, completely positive dynamics. For an environment made of external quantum fields, this phenomenon can be studied in detail: one finds that entanglement production can be controlled by varying the bath temperature and the distance between the atoms. Remarkably, in certain circumstances, the quantum correlations can persist in the asymptotic long-time regime.
We discuss the generation of entanglement between electronic states of two atoms in a cavity using direct quantum feedback schemes. We compare the effects of different control Hamiltonians and detection processes in the performance of entanglement production and show that the quantum-jump-based feedback proposed by us in Phys. Rev. A {\bf 76} 010301(R) (2007) can protect highly entangled states against decoherence. We provide analytical results that explain the robustness of jump feedback, and also analyse the perspectives of experimental implementation by scrutinising the effects of imperfect…
The violation of Bell inequalities where both detection and locality loopholes are closed is crucial for device independent assessments of quantum information. While of technological nature, the simultaneous closing of both loopholes still remains a challenge. In Nat. Commun. 4:2104(2013), a realistic setup to produce an atom-photon entangled state that could reach a loophole free Bell inequality violation within current experimental technology was proposed. Here we improve the analysis of this proposal by giving an analytical treatment that shows that the state proposed in Nat. Commun. 4:2104…
We describe an implementation of a quantum network over installed fiber in the Chicago area.We present network topology and control architecture of this network and illustrate preliminary results for quantum teleportation and coexistence of quantum and classical data on the same fiber link.
We study how to control the dynamics of tripartite entanglement among optical cavities using non-Markovian baths. In particular, we demonstrate how the reservoir engineering through the utilization of non-Markovian baths with different types of Lorentzian and ohmic spectral densities can lead to an entanglement survival for longer times and in some cases considerable regain of seemingly lost entanglement. Both of these behaviors indicate a better sustainability of entanglement (in time) compared to the usual Markovian bath situations which assumes a flat spectrum of the bath around the system …
Quantum entanglement, the essential resource for quantum information processing, has rich dynamics under different environments. Probing different entanglement dynamics typically requires exquisite control of complicated system-environment coupling in real experimental systems. Here, by a simple control of the effective solid-state spin bath in a diamond sample, we observe rich entanglement dynamics, including the conventional asymptotic decay as well as the entanglement sudden death, a term coined for the phenomenon of complete disappearance of entanglement after a short finite time interval.…
Initialization of composite quantum systems into highly entangled states is usually a must to allow their use for quantum technologies. However, the presence of unavoidable noise in the preparation stage makes the system state mixed, thus limiting the possibility of achieving this goal. Here we address this problem in the context of identical particle systems. We define the entanglement of formation for an arbitrary state of two identical qubits within the operational framework of spatially localized operations and classical communication (sLOCC). We then introduce an entropic measure of spati…
Bi-partite entanglement in multi-qubit systems cannot be shared freely. The rules of quantum mechanics impose bounds on how multi-qubit systems can be correlated. In this paper we utilize a concept of entangled graphs with weighted edges in order to analyze pure quantum states of multi-qubit systems. Here qubits are represented by vertexes of the graph while the presence of bi-partite entanglement is represented by an edge between corresponding vertexes. The weight of each edge is defined to be the entanglement between the two qubits connected by the edge, as measured by the concurrence. We pr…
Quantum steering is a kind of quantum correlations stronger than entanglement but weaker than Bell-nonlocality. In an optomechanical system pumped by squeezed light and driven in the red sideband, we study-under thermal effects-stationary Gaussian steering and its asymmetry of two mechanical modes. In the resolved sideband regime using experimentally feasible parameters, we show that Gaussian steering can be created by quantum fluctuations transfer from the squeezed light to the two mechanical modes. Moreover, one-way steering can be observed by controlling the squeezing degree or the environm…
We study theoretically a driven hybrid optomechanical system with a membrane-in-the-middle configuration containing two identical elongated cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in each side of the membrane. In the weakly interacting regime, the BECs can be considered as single-mode oscillators in the Bogoliubov approximation which are coupled to the optical field through the radiation pressure interaction so that they behave as two quasi-membranes. We show that the degree of squeezing of each BEC and its entanglement with the moving membrane can be controlled by the \textit{s}-wave sc…
Chromatic dispersion is one of the main limitations to the security of quantum communication protocols that rely on the transmission of single photons in single mode fibers. This phenomenon forces the trusted parties to define longer detection windows to avoid losing signal photons and increases the amount of detection noise that is being registered. In this work, we analyze the effects of chromatic dispersion on a photon pair generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and propagating in standard telecommunication fibers. We also present the possibility of reducing the detection nois…
We investigate the scheme for controlling information characterized by Von-Neumann entropy and the stationary state entanglement characterized by concurrence of two solid state qubits in the collective dephasing channel. It is shown that the local maximal value of the stationary state concurrence always corresponds to the local minimal value of information. We also propose a scheme for remotely controlling the entanglement of two solid state qubits against the collective dephasing. This idea may open a door to remotely suppress the detrimental effects of decoherence.
For technological purposes and theoretical curiosity, it is very interesting to have a building block that produces a considerable amount of entanglement between on-demand sites through a simple control of a few sites. Here, we consider permanently-coupled spin networks and study entanglement generation between qubit pairs to find low-complexity structures capable of generating considerable entanglement between various qubit pairs. We find that in axially symmetric networks the generated entanglement between some qubit pairs is rather larger than generic networks. We show that in uniformly-cou…
The correlation dynamics is investigated for various bi-partitions of a composite system consisting of two qubits, and two independent and non-identical noisy environments. The two qubits have no direct interaction with each other and locally interact with their environments. Classical and quantum correlations including entanglement are initially prepared only between the two qubits. We find that, contrary to the identical noisy environment case, the entanglement and quantum correlation transfer directions can be controlled by combining different noisy environments. The amplitude damping envir…
Controlling the quantum field statistics of confined light is a long-standing goal in integrated photonics. We show that by coupling molecular vibrations with a confined mid-infrared cavity vacuum, the photocount and quadrature field statistics of the cavity field can be reversibly manipulated over sub-picosecond timescales. The mechanism involves changing the cavity resonance frequency through a modulation of the dielectric response of the cavity materials using femtosecond UV pulses. For a single anharmonic molecular vibration in an infrared cavity under ultrastrong coupling conditions, the …
Measurement processes can be separated into an entangling interaction between the system and a meter and a subsequent read-out of the meter state that does not involve any further interactions with the system. In the interval between these two stages, the system and the meter are in an entangled state that encodes all possible effects of the read-out in the form of non-local quantum correlations between the system and the meter. Here, we show that the entanglement generated in the system-meter interaction expresses a fundamental relation between the amount of decoherence and the conditional pr…
We analyze the evolution of an entangled many-body state in a Josephson tunneling junction. A N00N state, which is a superposition of two complementary Fock states, appears in the evolution with sufficient probability only for a moderate many-body interaction on an intermediate time scale. This time scale is inversely proportional to the tunneling rate. Interaction between particles supports entanglement: The probability for creating an entangled state decays exponentially with the number of non-interacting particles, whereas it decays only like the inverse square root of the number of interac…
A scheme for controlling the entanglement of a two-qubit system by a local magnetic pulse is proposed. We show that the entanglement of the two-qubit system can be increased by sacrificing the coherence in ancillary degree of freedom, which is induced by a local manipulation.
The lack of methods to experimentally detect and quantify entanglement in quantum matter impedes our ability to identify materials hosting highly entangled phases, such as quantum spin liquids. We thus investigate the feasibility of using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to implement a model-independent measurement protocol for entanglement based on three entanglement witnesses: one-tangle, two-tangle, and quantum Fisher information (QFI). We perform high-resolution INS measurements on Cs$_2$CoCl$_4$, a close realization of the $S=1/2$ transverse-field XXZ spin chain, where we can control en…
Multipartite entanglement is indispensable in the implementation of quantum technologies and the fundamental test of quantum mechanics. Here we study how the W state and W-like state may be generated in a quantum-dot array by controlling the coupling between an incident photon and the quantum dots on a waveguide. We also discuss how the coupling may be controlled to observe the sudden death of entanglement. Our work can find potential applications in quantum information processing.
We examine the question of survival of quantum entanglement between the bipartite states and multiparticle states like GHZ states under the action of a dephasing bath by the application of sequence of $π$ pulses. We show the great advantage of the pulse sequence of Uhrig [ 2007 {\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 98} 100504] applied at irregular intervals of time, in controlling quantum entanglement. In particular death of entanglement could be considerably delayed by pulses. We use quantum optical techniques to obtain exact results.
Many-body unitary dynamics interspersed with repeated measurements display a rich phenomenology hallmarked by measurement-induced phase transitions. Employing feedback-control operations that steer the dynamics toward an absorbing state, we study the entanglement entropy behavior at the absorbing state phase transition. For short-range control operations, we observe a transition between phases with distinct sub-extensive scalings of entanglement entropy. In contrast, the system undergoes a transition between volume-law and area-law phases for long-range feedback operations. The fluctuations of…
The entanglement behavior of two classes of multi-qubit system, GHZ and GHZ like states passing through a generalized amplitude damping channel is discussed. Despite this channel causes degradation of the entangled properties and consequently their abilities to perform quantum teleportation, one can always improve the lower values of the entanglement and the fidelity of the teleportrd state by controlling on Bell measurements, analyzer angle and channel's strength. Using GHZ-like state within a generalized amplitude damping channel is much better than using the normal GHZ-state, where the deca…
Wave-particle duality and entanglement are two fundamental characteristics of quantum mechanics. All previous works on experimental investigations in wave{particle properties of single photons (or single particles in general) show that a well-defined interferometer setting determines a well-defined property of single photons. Here we take a conceptual step forward and control the wave-particle property of single photons with quantum entanglement. By doing so, we experimentally test the complementarity principle in a scenario, in which the setting of the interferometer is not defined at any ins…
Intriguing quantum effects that result from entangled molecular rovibrational states are shown to provide a novel means for controlling both differential and total collision cross sections in identical particle diatom-diatom scattering. Computational results on elastic and inelastic scattering of para--H$_2$ and para--H$_2$ are presented, with the collision energy ranging from 400 cm$^{-1}$ to the ultracold regime. The experimental realization and possible extension to other systems are discussed.
We summarize our recent results for the induced exchange interaction due to thermal bosonic environment (bath) which also generates quantum noise. Our focus here is on the onset of the interaction. We demonstrate that the induced interaction can be used to manipulate and create entanglement over time scales sufficiently large for controlling the two-qubit system for quantum computing applications, though ultimately the noise effects will dominate.

We show that the entanglement between two distant magnetic impurities, generated via electron scattering, can be easily modulated by controlling the magnitude of an applied external electric field. We assume that the two magnetic impurities are fixed and located on an one-dimensional quantum wire. A ballistic electron moving through the wire is scattered off by both impurities, so the electron spin can be seen as a mediator between the spins of the impurities. Heisenberg operators are used to describe the interactions between electron and impurities spins. We use a wave guide formalism to mode…
We study a 2-D disordered time-discrete quantum walk based on 1-D `generalized elephant quantum walk' where an entangling coin operator is assumed and which paves the way to a new set of properties. We show that considering a given disorder in one direction, it is possible to control the degree of spreading and entanglement in the other direction. This observation helps assert that the random quantum walks of this ilk serve as a controllable decoherence channel with the degree of randomness being the tunable parameter and highlight the role of dimensionality in quantum systems regarding inform…
We investigate the entanglement dynamics of two two-level emitters (qubits) mediated by a semiinfinite, one-dimensional (1D) photonic waveguide. The coupling of each qubit to the waveguide is chiral, which depends on the propagation direction of light. The finite end of the waveguide is terminated by a perfect mirror, such that coherent quantum feedback is introduced to the system. We show that the chirally generated entanglement between the qubits can be preserved by controlling the time delay of the feedback. Moreover, when the time delay is negligible, the qubit-qubit reduced system evolves…
Currently epsilon near zero materials (ENZ) have become important for controlling the propagation of light and enhancing by several orders of magnitude the Kerr and other nonlinearities. Given this advance it is important to examine the quantum electrodynamic processes and information tasks near ENZ materials. We study the entanglement between two two-level systems near ENZ materials and compare our results with the case where the ENZ material is replaced by a metal. It is shown that with ENZ materials substantial entanglement can be achieved over larger distances than for metal films. We show…
The advent of quantum devices, which exploit the two essential elements of quantum physics, coherence and entanglement, has sparked renewed interest in the control of open quantum systems. Successful implementations face the challenge to preserve the relevant nonclassical features at the level of device operation. A major obstacle is decoherence which is caused by interaction with the environment. Optimal control theory is a tool that can be used to identify control strategies in the presence of decoherence. We review here recent advances in optimal control methodology that allow for tackling …
We have studied the effect of a non-Hermitian Bosonic bath on the dynamics of a two-level spin system. The non-Hermitian Hamiltonian of the bath is chosen such that it converges to the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian when the non-Hermiticity is switched off. We calculate the dynamics of the spin system and found that the non-Hermiticity can have positive as well as negative effects on the coherence of the system. However, the decoherence can be completely eliminated by choosing the non-Hermiticity parameter and the phase of the system bath interaction appropriately. We have also studied the ef…
Searching for simple models that possess non-trivial controlling properties is one of the central tasks in the field of quantum technologies. In this work, we construct a quantum spin-$1/2$ chain of finite size, termed as controllable spin wire (CSW), in which we have $\hat{S}^{z} \hat{S}^{z}$ (Ising) interactions with a transverse field in the bulk, and $\hat{S}^{x} \hat{S}^{z}$ and $\hat{S}^{z} \hat{S}^{z}$ couplings with a canted field on the boundaries. The Hamiltonians on the boundaries, dubbed as tuning Hamiltonians (TH's), bear the same form as the effective Hamiltonians emerging in the…
Experimental validation and control of quantum traits for an open quantum system are important for any quantum information purpose. We consider a traveling atom qubit as a quantum memory with adjustable velocity inside a leaky cavity, adopting a quantum witness as a figure of merit for quantumness assessment. We show that this model constitutes an inherent physical instance where the quantum witness does not work properly if not suitably optimized. We then supply the optimal intermediate blind measurements which make the quantum witness a faithful tester of quantum coherence. We thus find that…
The entanglement distribution network connects remote users through sharing entanglement resources, which is essential for realizing quantum internet. We proposed a controllable entanglement distribution network (c-EDN) based on a silicon quantum photonic chip. The entanglement resources were generated by a quantum light source array based on spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in silicon waveguides and distributed to different users through time-reversed Hong-Ou-Mandel interferences in on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometers with thermal phase shifters. A chip sample was designed and fabricated,…
In this paper, we continue our investigation on controlling the state of a quantum harmonic oscillator, by coupling it to a reservoir composed of a sequence of qubits. Specifically, we show that sending qubits separable from each other but initialised at different states in pairs can stabilise the oscillator at squeezed states. However, only if entanglement is allowed in the reservoir qubit can we stabilise the oscillator at a wider set of squeezed states. This thus provides a proof for the necessity of involving entanglement in the reservoir qubits input to the oscillator, as regard to the st…
The issue of whether non-Markovianity (NM) could be considered as a resource in quantum information has been a subject of intense debate for the last years. Recently, a simple mechanism was proposed in which one of the main features of NM, the backflow of information from the environment to the system, represents a fundamental and quantifiable resource for generating entanglement within an open quantum system coupled to a finite and small environment [N. Mirkin, P. Poggi and D. Wisniacki, Phys. Rev. A, 99(2), 020301(R)]. In this work, we extend the universality of this resource mechanism by st…
We investigate the tunable quantum entanglement and the probabilities of excitations in a system of three qubits in a non-stationary cavity due to the dynamical Lamb effect, caused by non-adiabatic fast change of the boundary conditions of the cavity. The transition amplitudes and the probabilities of excitation of qubits due to the dynamical Lamb effect have been evaluated. The conditional concurrence and the conditional residual tangle for each fixed amount of created photons are introduced and calculated as measures of the pairwise or three-way dynamical quantum entanglement of the qubits. …
The thermal quantum discord (QD) is studied in a two-qubit Heisenberg XXZ system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We compare the thermal QD with thermal entanglement in this system and find remarkable differences between them. For instance, we show situations where QD decreases asymptotically to zero with temperature $T$ while entanglement decreases to zero at the point of critical temperature, situations where QD decreases with certain tunable parameters such as $D_z$ and $D_x$ when entanglement increases. We find that the characteristic of QD is exotic in this system and this pos…
Scaling a trapped-ion based quantum simulator to a large number of ions creates a fully-controllable quantum system that becomes inaccessible to numerical methods. When highly anisotropic trapping potentials are used to confine the ions in the form of a long linear string, several challenges have to be overcome to achieve high-fidelity coherent control of a quantum system extending over hundreds of micrometers. In this paper, we describe a setup for carrying out many-ion quantum simulations including single-ion coherent control that we use for demonstrating entanglement in 50-ion strings. Furt…
Quantum metrology is the use of genuinely quantum properties such as entanglement as a resource to outperform classical sensing strategies. Typically, entanglement is created by implementing gate operations or inducing many-body interactions. However, existing sensing schemes with these approaches require accurate control of the probe system such as switching on and off the interaction among qubits, which can be challenging for practical applications. Here, we propose an entanglement-enhanced sensing scheme with an always-on nearest-neighbor interaction between qubits. We adopt the transverse …
