The generic linear evolution of the density matrix of a system with a finite-dimensional state space is by stochastic maps which take a density matrix linearly into the set of density matrices. These dynamical stochastic maps form a linear convex set that may be viewed as supermatrices. The property of hermiticity of density matrices renders an associated supermatrix hermitian and hence diagonalizable; but the positivity of the density matrix does not make this associated supermatrix positive. If it is positive, the map is called completely positive and they have a simple parametrization. This is extended to all positive (not completely positive) maps. A contraction of a norm-preserving map of the combined system can be contracted to obtain all dynamical maps. The reconstruction of the extended dynamics is given.
This paper, dedicated to the memory of late Professor Tiberiu Constantinescu, discusses two parametrizations of positive matrices. The first, called the Schur-Constantinescu parametrization, is used to construct several examples of separable states (e.g., Hankel states). The second, called the Jacobi parametrization, is used to present an alternative to the Bloch sphere representation of qubits.
This paper reviews some characterizations of positive matrices and discusses which lead to useful parametrizations. It is argued that one of them, which we dub the Schur-Constantinescu parametrization is particularly useful. Two new applications of it are given. One shows all block-Toeplitz states are PPT. The other application is to relaxation rates.
This article gives a brief overview of some recent progress in the characterization and parametrization of density matrices of finite dimensional systems. We discuss in some detail the Bloch-vector and Jarlskog parametrizations and mention briefly the coset parametrization. As applications of the Bloch parametrization we discuss the trace invariants for the case of time dependent Hamiltonians and in some detail the dynamics of three-level systems. Furthermore, the Bloch vector of two-qubit systems as well as the use of the polarization operator basis is indicated. As the main application of th…
A parametrization of density operators for bipartite quantum systems is proposed. It is based on the particular parametrization of the unitary group found recently by Jarlskog. It is expected that this parametrization will find interesting applications in the study of quantum properties of many partite systems.
The most general evolution of the density matrix of a quantum system with a finite-dimensional state space is by stochastic maps which take a density matrix linearly into the set of density matrices. These dynamical stochastic maps form a linear convex set that may be viewed as supermatrices. The property of hermiticity of density matrices renders an associated supermatrix hermitian and hence diagonalizable. The positivity of the density matrix does not make the associated supermatrix positive though. If the map itself is positive, it is called completely positive and they have a simple parame…
Parametrization of qutrits on the complex projective plane CP^2 = SU(3)/U(2) is given explicitly. A set of constraints that characterize mixed state density matrices is found.
A variational upper bound on the ground state energy $E_{\rm gs}$ of a quantum system, $E_{\rm gs} \leqslant \langle Ψ|H| Ψ\rangle$, is well-known (here $H$ is the Hamiltonian of the system and $Ψ$ is an arbitrary wave function). Much less known are variational {\it lower} bounds on the ground state. We consider one such bound which is valid for a many-body translation-invariant lattice system. Such a lattice can be divided into clusters which are identical up to translations. The Hamiltonian of such a system can be written as $H=\sum_{i=1}^M H_i$, where a term $H_i$ is supported on the $i$'th…
In this note, we discuss dilation-theoretic matrix parametrizations of contractions and positive matrices. These parametrizations are then applied to some problems in quantum information theory. First we establish some properties of positive maps, or entanglement witnesses. Two further applications, concerning concrete dilations of completely positive maps, in particular quantum operations, are given.
The aim of this paper is to provide a method for explicit computation of the Bures metric over the space of $N$-level quantum system, based on the coset parametrization of density matrices.
In the paper (math-ph/0504049) Jarlskog gave an interesting simple parametrization to unitary matrices, which was essentially the canonical coordinate of the second kind in the Lie group theory (math-ph/0505047). In this paper we apply the method to a quantum computation based on multi-level system (qudit theory). Namely, by considering that the parametrization gives a complete set of modules in qudit theory, we construct the generalized Pauli matrices which play a central role in the theory and also make a comment on the exchange gate of two-qudit systems. Moreover we give an explicit constru…
We obtain a new inequality for arbitrary Hermitian matrices. We describe particular linear maps called the matrix portrait of arbitrary NxN matrices. The maps are obtained as analogs of partial tracing of density matrices of multipartite qudit systems. The structure of the maps is inspired by "portrait" map of the probability vectors corresponding to the action on the vectors by stochastic matrices containing either unity or zero matrix elements. We obtain new entropic inequalities for arbitrary qudit states including a single qudit and an discuss entangled single qudit state. We consider in d…
For quantum systems described by finite matrices, linear and affine maps of matrices are shown to provide equivalent descriptions of evolution of density matrices for a subsystem caused by unitary Hamiltonian evolution in a larger system; an affine map can be replaced by a linear map, and a linear map can be replaced by an affine map. There may be significant advantage in using an affine map. The linear map is generally not completely positive, but the linear part of an equivalent affine map can be chosen to be completely positive and related in the simplest possible way to the unitary Hamilto…
Stochastic matrices and positive maps in matrix algebras proved to be very important tools for analysing classical and quantum systems. In particular they represent a natural set of transformations for classical and quantum states, respectively. Here we introduce the notion of pseudo-stochastic matrices and consider their semigroup property. Unlike stochastic matrices, pseudo-stochastic matrices are permitted to have matrix elements which are negative while respecting the requirement that the sum of the elements of each column is one. They also allow for convex combinations, and carry a Lie gr…
We study positive maps of B(K) into B(H) for finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces K and H. Our main emphasis is on how Choi matrices and estimates of their norms with respect to mapping cones reflect various properties of the maps. Special attention will be given to entanglement properties and k-positive maps, in particular tensor products of 2-positive maps. The latter problem is directly related to the question of n-copy distillability of quantum states, for which we obtain a partial result.
Positive maps are useful for detecting entanglement in quantum information theory. Any entangled state can be detected by some positive map. In this paper, the relation between positive block matrices and completely positive trace-preserving maps is characterized. Consequently, a new method for constructing decomposable maps from positive block matrices is derived. In addition, a method for constructing positive but not completely positive maps from Hermitian block matrices is also obtained.
We provide a further analysis of the class of positive maps proposed ten years ago by Kossakowski. In particular we propose a new parametrization which reveals an elegant geometric structure and an interesting interplay between group theory and a certain class of positive maps.
We study a certain class of classical one dimensional piecewise linear maps. For these systems we introduce an infinite family of Markov partitions into equal cells. The symbolic dynamics generated by these systems is described by bistochastic (doubly stochastic) matrices. We analyze the structure of graphs generated from the corresponding symbolic dynamics. We demonstrate that the spectra of quantized graphs corresponding to the regular classical systems have locally Poissonian statistics, while quantized graphs derived from classically chaotic systems display statistical properties character…
Given a nonnegative matrix $A$, can you find diagonal matrices $D_1,~D_2$ such that $D_1AD_2$ is doubly stochastic? The answer to this question is known as Sinkhorn's theorem. It has been proved with a wide variety of methods, each presenting a variety of possible generalisations. Recently, generalisations such as to positive maps between matrix algebras have become more and more interesting for applications. This text gives a review of over 70 years of matrix scaling. The focus lies on the mathematical landscape surrounding the problem and its solution as well as the generalisation to positiv…
A new method of analysing positive bistochastic maps on the algebra of complex matrices $M_{3}$ has been proposed. By identifying the set of such maps with a convex set of linear operators on $\mathbb{R}^{8}$, one can employ techniques from the theory of compact affine semigroups to obtain results concerning asymptotic properties of positive maps. It turns out that the idempotent elements play a crucial role in classifying the convex set into subsets, in which representations of extremal positive maps are to be found. It has been show that all positive bistochastic maps, extremal in the set of…
The H-unistochastic matrices are a special class of symmetric bistochastic matrices obtained by taking the square of the absolute value of each entry of a Hermitian unitary matrix. We examine the geometric relationship of the convex hull of the n by n H-unistochastic matrices relative to the larger convex set of n by n symmetric bistochastic matrices. We show that any line segment in the convex set of the n by n symmetric bistochastic matrices which passes through the centroid of this convex set must spend at least two-thirds of its length in the convex hull of the n by n H-unistochastic matri…
Let $D$ be a space of $2\times n$ matrices. Then the face of the cone of all completely positive maps from $M_2$ into $M_n$ given by $D$ is an exposed face of the bigger cone of all decomposable positive linear maps if and only if the set of all rank one matrices in $D$ forms a subspace of $D$ together with zero and $D^\perp$ is spanned by rank one matrices.
We prove the linearity and injectivity of two maps $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$ on certain subsets of $M_n$ that satisfy $\operatorname{tr}(ϕ_1(A)ϕ_2(B))=\operatorname{tr}(AB)$. We apply it to characterize maps $ϕ_i:\mathcal{S}\to \mathcal{S}$ ($i=1, \ldots, m$) satisfying $$\operatorname{tr} (ϕ_1(A_1)\cdots ϕ_m(A_m))=\operatorname{tr} (A_1\cdots A_m)$$ in which $\mathcal{S}$ is the set of $n$-by-$n$ general, Hermitian, or symmetric matrices for $m\ge 3$, or positive definite or diagonal matrices for $m\ge 2$. The real versions are also given.
We give a useful new characterization of the set of all completely positive, trace-preserving (i.e., stochastic) maps from 2x2 matrices to 2x2 matrices. These conditions allow one to easily check any trace-preserving map for complete positivity. We also determine explicitly all extreme points of this set, and give a useful parameterization after reduction to a certain canonical form. This allows a detailed examination of an important class of non-unital extreme points which can be characterized as having exactly two images on the Bloch sphere. We also discuss a number of related issues about t…
