Rev. Lett.

The interest in quantum-optical states confined in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces has recently been stimulated by the progress in quantum computing, quantum-optical state preparation, and measurement techniques, in particular, by the development of the discrete quantum-state tomography. In the first part of our review we present two essentially different approaches to define harmonic oscillator states in the finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. One of them is related to the truncation scheme of Pegg, Phillips and Barnett [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1604 (1998)] -- the so-called quantum scissors device. The second method corresponds to the truncation scheme of Leoński and Tanaś [Phys. Rev. A 49, R20 (1994)]. We propose some new definitions of the states related to these truncation schemes and find their explicit forms in the Fock representation. We discuss finite-dimensional generalizations of coherent states, phase coherent states, displaced number states, Schrödinger cats, and squeezed vacuum. We show some intriguing properties of the states with the help of the discrete Wigner function.
The general Weyl -- Wigner formalism in finite dimensional phase spaces is investigated. Then this formalism is specified to the case of symmetric ordering of operators in an odd -- dimensional Hilbert space. A respective Wigner function on the discrete phase space is found and the limit, when the dimension of Hilbert space tends to infinity, is considered. It is shown that this limit gives the number -- phase Wigner function in quantum optics. Analogous results for the `almost' symmetric ordering in an even -- dimensional Hilbert space are obtained. Relations between the discrete Wigner funct…
The formalism for non-Hermitian quantum systems sometimes blurs the underlying physics. We present a systematic study of the vielbein-like formalism which transforms the Hilbert space bundles of non-Hermitian systems into the conventional ones, rendering the induced Hamiltonian to be Hermitian. In other words, any non-Hermitian Hamiltonian can be "transformed" into a Hermitian one without altering the physics. Thus we show how to find a reference frame (corresponding to Einstein's quantum elevator) in which a non-Hermitian system, equipped with a non-trivial Hilbert space metric, reduces to a …
In a gauge theory, the gauge invariant Hilbert space is unchanged by the coupling to arbitrary local operators. In the presence of Wilson loops, though, the physical Hilbert space must be enlarged by adding test electric charges along the loop. I discuss how at nonzero temperature Polyakov loops are naturally related to the propagator of a test charge. 't Hooft loops represent the propagation of a test magnetic charge, and so do not alter the physical Hilbert space.
It is well known that nonrelativistic quantum mechanics presents a clear asymmetry between space and time. Much of this asymmetry is attributed to the lack of Lorentz invariance of the theory. Nonetheless, a recent work [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{95}, 032133 (2017)] showed that even though this is partially true, there is a broader physical scenario in which space and time can be handled in nonrelativistic quantum theory in a more symmetric way. In this space-time-symmetric formalism, an additional Hilbert space is defined so that time is raised to the status of operator and position becomes a para…
It is well known that an (in general, non-commutative) set of non-Hermitian operators $Λ_j$ with real eigenvalues need not necessarily represent observables. We describe a specific class of quantum models in which these operators plus the underlying physical Hilbert-space metric $Θ$ are all represented in terms of an auxiliary operator $(N+1)-$plet $Z_k$, $k=0,1,\ldots,N$. Our formalism degenerates to the ${\cal PT}-$symmetric quantum mechanics at $N=2$, with metric $Θ=Z_2Z_1$, parity ${\cal P}=Z_2$, charge ${\cal C}=Z_1$ and Hamiltonian $H=Z_0$.
Decomposition of (finite-dimensional) operators in terms of orthogonal bases of matrices has been a standard method in quantum physics for decades. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular because of various methodologies applied in quantum information, such as the graph state formalism and the theory of quantum error correcting codes, but also due to the intensified research on the Bloch representation of quantum states. In this contribution we collect various interesting facts and identities that hold for finite-dimensional orthogonal matrix bases.
Finite plane geometry is associated with finite dimensional Hilbert space. The association allows mapping of q-number Hilbert space observables to the c-number formalism of quantum mechanics in phase space. The mapped entities reflect geometrically based line-point interrelation. Particularly simple formulas are involved when use is made of mutually unbiased bases (MUB) representations for the Hilbert space entries. The geometry specifies a point-line interrelation. Thus underpinning d-dimensional Hilbert space operators (resp. states) with geometrical points leads to operators termed "line op…
These are the notes written for the talk given at the workshop Rethinking foundations of physics 2016. In section 2, a derivation of the the quantum formalism starting from propositional calculus (quantum logic) is reviewed, pointing out which are the basic requirements that lead to the use of Hilbert spaces. In section 3, a similar analysis is done following for the reconstruction of quantum theory using an operational approach. In both cases, non-commutativity plays a crucial role. Finally, in section 4a toy model which try to motivate non-commutativity is proposed. Despite this last section…

A temporally varying discretization often features in discrete gravitational systems and appears in lattice field theory models subject to a coarse graining or refining dynamics. To better understand such discretization changing dynamics in the quantum theory, an according formalism for constrained variational discrete systems is constructed. While the present manuscript focuses on global evolution moves and, for simplicity, restricts to Euclidean configuration spaces, a companion article discusses local evolution moves. In order to link the covariant and canonical picture, the dynamics of the…
The notions of qubits and coherent states correspond to different physical systems and are described by specific formalisms. Qubits are associated with a two-dimensional Hilbert space and can be illustrated on the Bloch sphere. In contrast, the underlying Hilbert space of coherent states is infinite-dimensional and the states are typically represented in phase space. For the particular case of binary coherent state alphabets these otherwise distinct formalisms can equally be applied. We capitalize this formal connection to analyse the properties of optimally cloned binary coherent states. Seve…
A multipartite system comprised of $n$ subsystems, each of which is described with `local variables' in ${\mathbb Z}(d)$ and with a $d$-dimensional Hilbert space $H(d)$, is considered. Local Fourier transforms in each subsystem are defined and related phase space methods are discussed (displacement operators, Wigner and Weyl functions, etc). A holistic view of the same system might be more appropriate in the case of strong interactions, which uses `global variables' in ${\mathbb Z}(d^n)$ and a $d^n$-dimensional Hilbert space $H(d^n)$. A global Fourier transform is then defined and related phas…
We provide here a general mathematical framework to model attitudes towards ambiguity which uses the formalism of quantum theory as a ``purely mathematical formalism, detached from any physical interpretation''. We show that the quantum-theoretic framework enables modelling of the "Ellsberg paradox", but it also successfully applies to more concrete human decision-making (DM) tests involving financial, managerial and medical decisions. In particular, we elaborate a mathematical representation of various empirical studies which reveal that attitudes of managers towards uncertainty shift from "a…
A formulation of quaternionic quantum mechanics ($\mathbb{H}$QM) is presented in terms of a real Hilbert space. Using a physically motivated scalar product, we prove the spectral theorem and obtain a novel quaternionic Fourier series. After a brief discussion on unitary operators in this formalism, we conclude that this quantum theory is indeed consistent, and can be a valuable tool in the search for new physics.
The fluctuations or disordered motion of the electromagnetic fields are described by statistical properties rather than instantaneous values. This statistical description of the optical fields is underlying in the Stokes-Mueller formalism that applies to measurable intensities. However, the fundamental concept of optical coherence, that is assessed by the ability of waves to interfere, is not treatable by this formalism because it omits the global phase. In this work we show that, using an analogy between deterministic matrix states associated to optical media and quantum mechanical wavefuncti…
Interferometry is one of the central organizing principles of optics. Key to interferometry is the concept of optical delay, which facilitates spectral analysis in terms of time-harmonics. In contrast, when analyzing a beam in a Hilbert space spanned by spatial modes -- a critical task for spatial-mode multiplexing and quantum communication -- basis-specific principles are invoked that are altogether distinct from that of `delay.' Here, we extend the traditional concept of temporal delay to the spatial domain, thereby enabling the analysis of a beam in an arbitrary spatial-mode basis -- exempl…
Using the quadrature bases that incorporate the spatiotemporal degrees of freedom, we develop a Wigner functional theory for quantum optics, as an extension of the Moyal formalism. Since the spatiotemporal quadrature bases span the complete Hilbert space of all quantum optical states, it does not require factorization as a tensor product of discrete Hilbert spaces. The Wigner functions associated with such a space become functionals and operations are expressed by functional integrals -- the functional version of the star product. The resulting formalism enables tractable calculations for scen…
