We consider the quantum and classical Liouville dynamics of a non-integrable model of two coupled spins. Initially localised quantum states spread exponentially to the system dimension when the classical dynamics are chaotic. The long-time behaviour of the quantum probability distributions and, in particular, the parameter-dependent rates of relaxation to the equilibrium state are surprisingly well approximated by the classical Liouville mechanics even for small quantum numbers. As the accessible classical phase space becomes predominantly chaotic, the classical and quantum probability equilibrium configurations approach the microcanonical distribution, although the quantum equilibrium distributions exhibit characteristic `minimum' fluctuations away from the microcanonical state. The magnitudes of the quantum-classical differences arising from the equilibrium quantum fluctuations are studied for both pure and mixed (dynamically entangled) quantum states. In both cases the standard deviation of these fluctuations decreases as $(\hbar/{\mathcal J})^{1/2}$, where ${\mathcal J}$ is a measure of the system size. In conclusion, under a variety of conditions the differences between quantum and classical Liouville mechanics are shown to become vanishingly small in the classical limit (${\mathcal J}/\hbar \to \infty$) of a non-dissipative model endowed with only a few degrees of freedom.
The conditions of quantum-classical correspondence for a system of two interacting spins are investigated. Differences between quantum expectation values and classical Liouville averages are examined for both regular and chaotic dynamics well beyond the short-time regime of narrow states. We find that quantum-classical differences initially grow exponentially with a characteristic exponent consistently larger than the largest Lyapunov exponent. We provide numerical evidence that the time of the break between the quantum and classical predictions scales as log(${\cal J}/ \hbar$), where ${\cal J…
The equilibrium properties of nanoscale systems can deviate significantly from standard thermodynamics due to their coupling to an environment. For the generalised $θ$-angled spin-boson model, we first derive a compact and general form of the classical equilibrium state including environmental corrections to all orders. Secondly, for the quantum spin-boson model we prove, by carefully taking a large spin limit, that Bohr's quantum-classical correspondence persists at all coupling strengths. This correspondence gives insight into the conditions for a coupled quantum spin to be well-approximated…
We study the quantum-classical correspondence of an experimentally accessible system of interacting bosons in a tilted triple-well potential. With the semiclassical analysis, we get a better understanding of the different phases of the quantum system and how they could be used for quantum information science. In the integrable limits, our analysis of the stationary points of the semiclassical Hamiltonian reveals critical points associated with second-order quantum phase transitions. In the nonintegrable domain, the system exhibits crossovers. Depending on the parameters and quantities, the qua…
Comment on a letter to Nature Physics, where Sakmann and Kasevich claim to solve the many-body time dependent Schrödinger equation to simulate single experimental runs of interacting quantum systems.
We present a method for deriving bulk and edge invariants for interacting, many-body localized Floquet systems in two spatial dimensions. This method is based on a general mathematical object which we call a flow. As an application of our method, we derive bulk invariants for Floquet systems without symmetry, as well as for systems with $U(1)$ symmetry. We also derive new formulations of previously known single-particle and many-body invariants. For bosonic systems without symmetry, our invariant gives a bulk counterpart of the rational-valued GNVW index $\frac{p}{q}$ quantifying transport of …
The usual paradigm of open quantum systems falls short when the environment is actually coupled to additional fields or components that drive it out of equilibrium. Here we explore the simplest such scenario, by considering a two level system coupled to a first thermal reservoir that in turn couples to a second thermal bath at a different temperature. We derive a master equation description for the system and show that, in this situation, the dynamics can be especially rich. In particular, we observe prethermalization, a transitory phenomenon in which the system initially approaches thermal eq…
We conjecture that non-equilibrium boundary conditions generically trigger long range order in non-equilibrium steady states of locally interacting quantum chains. Our result is based on large scale density matrix renormalization group simulations of several models of quantum spin 1/2 chains which are driven far from equilibrium by coupling to a pair of unequal Lindblad reservoirs attached locally to the ends of the chain. In particular, we find a phase transition from exponentially decaying to long range spin-spin correlations in integrable Heisenberg XXZ chain by changing the anisotropy para…
Exploiting the possibility of temporal variation of the winding number, we have prepared a SSH chain in its {\it stroboscopic} topological state, starting from the trivial one, by application of a periodic perturbation. The periodic driving, we employ here, is adiabatically switched on to break the particle-hole symmetry and generate a chiral mass term in the effective Floquet Hamiltonian; consequently the Floquet Hamiltonian also gets deformed without crossing the gapless quantum critical point. The particle hole symmetry is subsequently restored in the Floquet Hamiltonian by adiabatically sw…
We present a universal relation between the flow of a Renyi entropy and the full counting statistics of energy transfers. We prove the exact relation for a flow to a system in thermal equilibrium that is weakly coupled to an arbitrary time-dependent and non-equilibrium system. The exact correspondence, given by this relation, provides a simple protocol to quantify the flows of Shannon and Renyi entropies from the measurements of energy transfer statistics.
Problems of interacting quantum magnetic moments become exponentially complex with increasing number of particles. As a result, classical equations are often used but the validity of reduction of a quantum problem to a classical problem should be justified. In this paper we formulate the correspondence principle, which shows that the classical equations of motion for a system of dipole interacting spins have identical form with the quantum equations. The classical simulations based on the correspondence principle for spin systems provide a practical tool to study different macroscopic spin phy…
In the study of quantum transport, much has been known for dynamics near thermal equilibrium. However, quantum transport far away from equilibrium is much less well understood--the linear response approximation does not hold for physics far-out-of-equilibrium in general. In this work, motivated by recent cold atom experiments on probing quantum many-body dynamics of a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain, we study the strong interaction limit of the one-dimensional spinless fermion model, which is dual to the XXZ spin chain. We develop a highly efficient computation algorithm for simulating the non-…
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of two interacting atoms in a one-dimensional harmonic trap after a quench by a tightly pinned impurity atom. We make use of an approximate variational calculation called the Lagrange-mesh method to solve the Schrödinger equation as a function of inter-particle interaction and impurity quench strength. We investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics by calculating the Loschmidt echo which quantifies the irreversibility of the system following the quench, while its probability distribution after long times can be used to identify distinct dynamical regime…
In this paper, we study five-dimensional Dirac fermions of which extra-dimension is compactified on quantum graphs. We find that there is a non-trivial correspondence between matrices specifying boundary conditions at the vertex of the quantum graphs and zero-dimensional Hamiltonians in gapped free-fermion systems. Based on the correspondence, we provide a complete topological classification of the boundary conditions in terms of non-interacting fermionic topological phases. The ten symmetry classes of topological phases are fully identified in the language of five-dimensional Dirac fermions, …
We approach the long-standing problem of preparing an out-of-equilibrium many-body Chern insulator (CI) and associated bulk-boundary correspondence unitarily. Herein, this is addressed by constructing a dynamical many-body Chern invariant exploiting the property of the bulk macroscopic electric polarisation (Resta polarisation) of the CI. This Chern invariant defined from observable correlations is also established to topologically classify many body Chern states in equilibrium. The non-equilibrium behavior of the invariant is probed by ramping the paradigmatic Haldane model of graphene from i…
We investigate the quantum discord dynamics and inversion operator of a two-level atom initially in thermal equilibrium mixed state interacting with a cavity field prepared in a n-photon Fock state. We considered the Jaynes-Cummings model which is an exactly quantum mechanical model of interaction between two different quantum systems, an optical cavity in single mode n-photon Fock state and a two-level atom. The influence of interaction time and measurement basis used for calculating the conditional entropy is discussed on the evolution of the quantum discord and on its minimum. The evolution…
It is increasingly important to understand the spatial dynamics of epidemics. While there are numerous mathematical models of epidemics, there is a scarcity of physical systems with sufficiently well-controlled parameters to allow quantitative model testing. It is also challenging to replicate the macro non-equilibrium effects of complex models in microscopic systems. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally a physics analog of epidemic spreading using optically driven non-equilibrium phase transitions in strongly interacting Rydberg atoms. Using multiple laser beams we can impose any desir…

In this work we investigate the issue of integrability in a classical model for noninteracting fermionic fields. This model is constructed via classical-quantum correspondence obtained from the semiclassical treatment of the quantum system. Our main finding is that the classical system, contrary to the quantum system, is not integrablein general. Regarding this contrast it is clear that in general classical models for fermionic quantum systems have to be handled with care. Further numerical investigation of the system showed that there may be islands of stability in the phase space. We also in…
Models for non-unitary quantum dynamics, such as quantum circuits that include projective measurements, have been shown to exhibit rich quantum critical behavior. There are many complementary perspectives on this behavior. For example, there is a known correspondence between d-dimensional local non-unitary quantum circuits and tensor networks on a D=(d+1)-dimensional lattice. Here, we show that in the case of systems of non-interacting fermions, there is furthermore a full correspondence between non-unitary circuits in d spatial dimensions and unitary non-interacting fermion problems with stat…
Our previous works presented zeta functions by the Konno-Sato theorem or the Fourier analysis for one-particle models including random walks, correlated random walks, quantum walks, and open quantum random walks. This paper introduces a new zeta function for multi-particle models with probabilistic or quantum interactions, called the interacting particle system (IPS). We compute the zeta function for some tensor-type IPSs.
Understanding non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of many-body systems is one of the most challenging problems in modern theoretical physics. While numerous approximate and exact solutions exist for systems in equilibrium, examples of non-equilibrium dynamics of many-body systems, which allow reliable theoretical analysis, are few and far between. In this paper we discuss a broad class of time-dependent interacting systems subject to external linear and parabolic potentials, for which the many-body Schrödinger equation can be solved using a scaling transformation. We demonstrate that scaling solu…
The topological features of quantum many-body wave functions are known to have profound consequences for the physics of ground-states and their low-energy excitations. We describe how topology influences the dynamics of many-body systems when driven far from equilibrium. Our results are succinctly captured by a nonequilibrium topological classification that can be used to predict universal aspects of generic isolated quantum systems as they evolve unitarily in time. By analogy to the classifications used to describe systems in equilibrium, we consider two short-ranged entangled wave functions …
