In this paper, a variational perturbation scheme for nonrelativistic many-Fermion systems is generalized to a Bosonic system. By calculating the free energy of an anharmonic oscillator model, we investigated this variational expansion scheme for its efficiency. Using the modified Feynman rules for the diagrams, we obtained the analytical expression of the free energy up to the fourth order. Our numerical results at various orders are compared with the exact and other relevant results.
We present a method to perform a variational analysis of the quantum master equation for driven-disspative bosonic fields with arbitrary large occupation numbers. Our approach combines the P representation of the density matrix and the variational principle for open quantum system. We benchmark the method by comparing it to wave-function Monte-Carlo simulations and the solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equation for the Jaynes-Cummings model. Furthermore, we study a model describing Rydberg polaritons in a cavity field and introduce an additional set of variational paramaters to describe correlatio…
We analyze a binary classification problem by using a support vector machine based on variational quantum-circuit model. We propose to solve a linear equation of the support vector machine by using a $Γ$ matrix expansion. In addition, it is shown that an arbitrary quantum state is prepared by optimizing a universal quantum circuit representing an arbitrary $U(2^N)$ based on the steepest descent method. It may be a quantum generalization of Field-Programmable-Gate Array (FPGA).
We develop an efficient variational approach to studying dynamics of a localized quantum spin coupled to a bath of mobile spinful bosons. We use parity symmetry to decouple the impurity spin from the environment via a canonical transformation and reduce the problem to a model of the interacting bosonic bath. We describe coherent time evolution of the latter using bosonic Gaussian states as a variational ansatz. We provide full analytical expressions for equations describing variational time evolution that can be applied to study in- and out-of-equilibrium phenomena in a wide class of quantum i…
We derive recursively the perturbation series for the ground-state energy of the D-dimensional anharmonic oscillator and resum it using variational perturbation theory (VPT). From the exponentially fast converging approximants, we extract the coefficients of the large-D expansion to higher orders. The calculation effort is much smaller than in the standard field-theoretic approach based on the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation.

Quantum algorithms are promising candidates for the enhancement of computational efficiency for a variety of computational tasks, allowing for the numerical study of physical systems intractable to classical computers. In the Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) era of quantum computing, however, quantum resources are limited and thus quantum algorithms utilizing such resources efficiently are highly coveted. We present a resource-efficient quantum algorithm for bosonic ground and excited state computations using the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm with the Unitary Coupled Cluster…
We present a physically motivated variational wave function for the ground state of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM). The wave function is a weighted superposition of squeezed coherent states entangled with non-orthogonal qubit states, and relies only on three variational parameters in the regimes of interest where the squeezing effect becomes negligible. The variational expansion describes the ground state remarkably well in almost all parameter regimes, especially with arbitrary bias. We use the variational result to calculate various relevant physical observables of the ground state…
Tensor networks states allow to find the low energy states of local lattice Hamiltonians through variational optimization. Recently, a construction of such states in the continuum was put forward, providing a first step towards the goal of solving quantum field theories (QFTs) variationally. However, the proposed manifold of continuous tensor network states (CTNSs) is difficult to study in full generality, because the expectation values of local observables cannot be computed analytically. In this paper, we study a tractable subclass of CTNSs, the Gaussian CTNSs (GCTNSs), and benchmark them on…
We introduce a numerical method and python package, https://github.com/andillio/CHiMES, that simulates quantum systems initially well approximated by mean field theory using a second order extension of the classical field approach. We call this the field moment expansion method. In this way, we can accurately approximate the evolution of first and second field moments beyond where the mean field theory breaks down. This allows us to estimate the quantum breaktime of a classical approximation without any calculations external to the theory. We investigate the accuracy of the field moment expans…
We show how series expansions of functions of bosonic number operators are naturally derived from finite-difference calculus. The scheme employs Newton series rather than Taylor series known from differential calculus, and also works in cases where the Taylor expansion fails. For a function of number operators, such an expansion is automatically normal ordered. Applied to the Holstein-Primakoff representation of spins, the scheme yields an exact series expansion with a finite number of terms and, in addition, allows for a systematic expansion of the spin operators that respects the spin commut…
Variational quantum algorithms are considered to be appealing applications of near-term quantum computers. However, it has been unclear whether they can outperform classical algorithms or not. To reveal their limitations, we must seek a technique to benchmark them on large scale problems. Here, we propose a perturbative approach for efficient benchmarking of variational quantum algorithms. The proposed technique performs perturbative expansion of a circuit consisting of Clifford and Pauli rotation gates, which is enabled by exploiting the classical simulatability of Clifford circuits. Our meth…
By using worldline and diagrammatic quantum Monte Carlo techniques, matrix product state and a variational approach à la Feynman, we investigate the equilibrium properties and relaxation features of a quantum system of $N$ spins antiferromagnetically interacting with each other, with strength $J$, and coupled to a common bath of bosonic oscillators, with strength $α$. We show that, in the Ohmic regime, a Beretzinski-Thouless-Kosterlitz quantum phase transition occurs. While for $J=0$ the critical value of $α$ decreases asymptotically with $1/N$ by increasing $N$, for nonvanishing $J$ it turns …
We study the temporal expansion of an ultracold Bose gas in two-dimensional, square optical lattices. The gas is described by the Bose-Hubbard model deep in the superfluid regime, with initially all bosons condensed in the central site of the lattice. We use the previously developed nonequilibrium propagator method for capturing the time evolution of an interacting bosonic system, where the many-body Hamiltonian is represented in an appropriate local basis and the corresponding field operators are separated into the classical [Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC)] part and quantum mechanical fluctua…
Given a class of $q$-local Hamiltonians, is it possible to find a simple variational state whose energy is a finite fraction of the ground state energy in the thermodynamic limit? Whereas product states often provide an affirmative answer in the case of bosonic (or qubit) models, we show that Gaussian states fail dramatically in the fermionic case, like for the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models. This prompts us to propose a new class of wavefunctions for SYK models inspired by the variational coupled cluster algorithm. We introduce a static ("0+0D") large-$N$ field theory to study the energy, two…
