We present a new variational method for investigating the ground state and out of equilibrium dynamics of quantum many-body bosonic and fermionic systems. Our approach is based on constructing variational wavefunctions which extend Gaussian states by including generalized canonical transformations between the fields. The key advantage of such states compared to simple Gaussian states is presence of non-factorizable correlations and the possibility of describing states with strong entanglement between particles. In contrast to the commonly used canonical transformations, such as the polaron or Lang-Firsov transformations, we allow parameters of the transformations to be time dependent, which extends their regions of applicability. We derive equations of motion for the parameters characterizing the states both in real and imaginary time using the differential structure of the variational manifold. The ground state can be found by following the imaginary time evolution until it converges to a steady state. Collective excitations in the system can be obtained by linearizing the real-time equations of motion in the vicinity of the imaginary time steady-state solution. Our formalism allows us not only to determine the energy spectrum of quasiparticles and their lifetime, but to obtain the complete spectral functions and to explore far out of equilibrium dynamics such as coherent evolution following a quantum quench. We illustrate and benchmark this framework with several examples: a single polaron in the Holstein and Su-Schrieer-Heeger models, non-equilibrium dynamics in the spin-boson and Kondo models, the superconducting to charge density wave phase transitions in the Holstein model.
We present a hierarchical equations of motion approach, which allows a numerically exact simulation of nonequilibrium transport in general open quantum systems involving multiple macroscopic bosonic and fermionic environments. The performance of the method is demonstrated for a model of a nanosystem, which involves interacting electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom and is coupled to fermionic and bosonic baths. The results show the intricate interplay of electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in this nonequilibrium transport scenario for both voltage and thermally driven transpor…
The time evolution of occupation number is studied for fermionic or bosonic oscillator linearly fully coupled to several fermionic and bosonic heat baths. The influence of characteristics of thermal reservoirs of different statistics on the non-stationary population probability is analyzed at large times. Applications of the absence of equilibrium in such systems for creating a dynamic (nonstationary) memory storage are discussed.
We present novel approaches to the dynamics of an open quantum system coupled linearly to a non-Markovian fermionic or bosonic environment. In the first approach, we obtain a hierarchy of stochastic evolution equations of the diffusion type. For the bosonic case such a hierarchy has been derived and proven suitable for efficient numerical simulations recently [arXiv:1402.4647]. The stochastic fermionic hierarchy derived here contains Grassmannian noise, which makes it difficult to simulate numerically due to its anti-commutative multiplication. Therefore, in our second approach we eliminate th…

Recently, there has been a surge of interest in using Rényi entropies as quantifiers of correlations in many-body quantum systems. However, it is well known that in general these entropies do not satisfy the strong subadditivity inequality, which is a central property ensuring the positivity of correlation measures. In fact, in many cases they do not even satisfy the weaker condition of subadditivity. In the present paper we shed light on this subject by providing a detailed survey of Rényi entropies for bosonic and fermionic Gaussian states. We show that for bosons the Rényi entropies always …
We derive a general relation between the bosonic and fermionic entanglement in the ground states of supersymmetric quadratic Hamiltonians. For this, we construct canonical identifications between bosonic and fermionic subsystems. Our derivation relies on a unified framework to describe both, bosonic and fermionic Gaussian states in terms of so-called linear complex structures $J$. The resulting dualities apply to the full entanglement spectrum between the bosonic and the fermionic systems, such that the von Neumann entropy and arbitrary Renyi entropies can be related. We illustrate our finding…
We have constructed a unified framework for generalizing the finite-time thermodynamic behavior of statistically distinct bosonic and fermionic Stirling cycles with regenerative characteristics. In our formalism, working fluid consisting of particles obeying Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics are treated under equal footing and modelled as a collection of non-interacting harmonic and fermionic oscillators. In terms of frequency and population of the two oscillators, we have provided an interesting generalization for the definitions of heat and work that are valid for classical as well as…
We introduce the bosonic and fermionic ensembles of density matrices and study their entanglement. In the fermionic case, we show that random bipartite fermionic density matrices have non-positive partial transposition, hence they are typically entangled. The similar analysis in the bosonic case is more delicate, due to a large positive outlier eigenvalue. We compute the asymptotic ratio between the size of the environment and the size of the system Hilbert space for which random bipartite bosonic density matrices fail the PPT criterion, being thus entangled. We also relate moment computations…

Symmetry transformations have proved useful in determining the algebraic structure and internal dynamical properties of physical systems. In the quantum Rabi model, invariance under parity symmetry transformation has been used to obtain exact solutions of the eigenvalue equation and very good approximations of the internal dynamics of the interacting atom-light system. In this article, two symmetry operators, characterized as "duality" symmetry operators, have been introduced which transform the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian into duality conjugates. The parity and duality symmetry operators constit…
Quantum theory sets a limit on the minimum time required to transform from an initial state to a target state. It is known as quantum speed limit time. quantum speed limit time can be used to determine the rate of quantum evolution for closed and open quantum systems. Given that in the real world we are dealing with open quantum systems, the study of quantum speed limit time for such systems has particular importance. In this work we consider the topological qubit realized by two Majorana modes. We consider the case in which the topological qubit is influenced by fermionic and bosonic environm…
Wick's theorem provides a connection between time ordered products of bosonic or fermionic fields, and their normal ordered counterparts. We consider a generic pair of operator orderings and we prove, by induction, the theorem that relates them. We name this the General Wick's Theorem (GWT) because it carries Wick's theorem as special instance, when one applies the GWT to time and normal orderings. We establish the GWT both for bosonic and fermionic operators, i.e. operators that satisfy c-number commutation and anticommutation relations respectively. We remarkably show that the GWT is the sam…
The evolution of a quantum system towards thermal equilibrium is usually studied by approximate methods, which have their limits of validity and should be checked against analytically solvable models. In this paper, we propose an analytically solvable model to investigate the energy transfer between a bosonic bath and a fermionic chain which are nonlinearly-coupled to each other. The bosonic bath consists of an infinite collection of non-interacting bosonic modes, while the fermionic chain is represented by a chain of interacting fermions with nearest-neighbor interactions. We compare behavior…
Recently, much emphasis has been given to genuinely quantum reservoirs generically called fermionic reservoirs. These reservoirs are characterized by having finite levels, as opposed to bosonic reservoirs, which have infinite levels that can be populated via an increase in temperature. Given this, some studies are being carried out to explore the advantages of using quantum reservoirs, in particular in the operation of heat machines. In this work, we make a comparative study of a thermal refrigerator operating in the presence of either a bosonic or a fermionic reservoir, and we show that fermi…
We investigate topological phase transitions driven by interaction and identify a novel topological Mott insulator state in one-dimensional fermionic optical superlattices through numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. Remarkably, the low-energy edge excitations change from spin-1/2 fermionic single-particle modes to spin-1 bosonic collective modes across the phase transition. Due to spin-charge separation, the low-energy theory is governed by an effective spin superexchange model, whereas the charge degree of freedom is fully gapped out. Such topological Mott state can …
The dynamics of many-body fermionic systems are important in problems ranging from catalytic reactions at electrochemical surfaces, to transport through nanojunctions, and offer a prime target for quantum computing applications. Here we derive the set of conditions under which fermionic operators can be exactly replaced by bosonic operators that render the problem amenable to a large toolbox of dynamical methods while still capturing the correct dynamics of the $n$-body operators. Importantly, our analysis offers a simple guide on how one can exploit these simple maps to calculate nonequilibri…
We assess whether a confined Wigner molecule constituted by $2N$ fermions behaves as $N$ bosons or $2N$ fermions. Following the work by C. K. Law [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{71}, 034306 (2005)] and Chudzicki et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 070402 (2010)] we discuss the physical meaning and the reason why a large amount of entanglement is needed in order to ensure a bosonic composite behavior. By applying a composite boson ansatz, we found that a Wigner molecule confined in two dimensional traps presents a bosonic behavior induced by symmetry. The two-particle Wigner molecule ground state requ…
Quantum walks on lattices can give rise to relativistic wave equations in the long-wavelength limit, but going beyond the single-particle case has proven challenging, especially in more than one spatial dimension. We construct quantum cellular automata for distinguishable particles based on two different quantum walks, and show that by restricting to the antisymmetric and symmetric subspaces, respectively, a multiparticle theory for free fermions and bosons in three spatial dimensions can be produced. This construction evades a no-go theorem that prohibits the usual fermionization construction…
We study the steady state entanglement and correlations of an open system comprised of two coupled fermions in the equilibrium or nonequilibrium environments and distill the nonequilibrium contribution to the quantum correlations. We show that in the equilibrium condition, the steady-state quantum correlations exhibit non-monotonic behavior, while in the nonequilibrium case, the monotonicity is determined by many parameters. The entanglement vanishes abruptly upon the increase of the temperature (bias) and chemical potential bias, it witnesses a critical chemical potential above which the conc…

We present a method to perform a variational analysis of the quantum master equation for driven-disspative bosonic fields with arbitrary large occupation numbers. Our approach combines the P representation of the density matrix and the variational principle for open quantum system. We benchmark the method by comparing it to wave-function Monte-Carlo simulations and the solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equation for the Jaynes-Cummings model. Furthermore, we study a model describing Rydberg polaritons in a cavity field and introduce an additional set of variational paramaters to describe correlatio…

Starting from divisibility problem for Fibonacci numbers we introduce Fibonacci divisors, related hierarchy of Golden derivatives in powers of the Golden Ratio and develop corresponding quantum calculus. By this calculus, the infinite hierarchy of Golden quantum oscillators with integer spectrum determined by Fibonacci divisors, the hierarchy of Golden coherent states and related Fock-Bargman representations in space of complex analytic functions are derived. It is shown that Fibonacci divisors with even and odd $k$ describe Golden deformed bosonic and fermionic quantum oscillators, correspond…
The string-net approach by Levin and Wen, and the local unitary transformation approach by Chen, Gu, and Wen, provide ways to classify topological orders with gappable edge in 2D bosonic systems. The two approaches reveal that the mathematical framework for 2+1D bosonic topological order with gappable edge is closely related to unitary fusion category theory. In this paper, we generalize these systematic descriptions of topological orders to 2D fermion systems. We find a classification of 2+1D fermionic topological orders with gappable edge in terms of the following set of data $(N^{ij}_k, F^{…
The dynamics of quantum field theories on bounded domains requires the introduction of boundary conditions on the quantum fields. We address the problem from a very general perspective by using charge conservation as a fundamental principle for scalar and fermionic quantum field theories. Unitarity arises as a consequence of the choice of charge preserving boundary conditions. This provides a powerful framework for the analysis of global geometrical and topological properties of the space of physical boundary conditions. Boundary conditions which allow the existence of edge states can only ari…
