We assess whether a confined Wigner molecule constituted by $2N$ fermions behaves as $N$ bosons or $2N$ fermions. Following the work by C. K. Law [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{71}, 034306 (2005)] and Chudzicki et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 070402 (2010)] we discuss the physical meaning and the reason why a large amount of entanglement is needed in order to ensure a bosonic composite behavior. By applying a composite boson ansatz, we found that a Wigner molecule confined in two dimensional traps presents a bosonic behavior induced by symmetry. The two-particle Wigner molecule ground state required by the composite boson ansatz was obtained within the harmonic approximation in the strong interacting regime. Our approach allows us to address few-particle states (widely studied within a variety of theoretical and numerical techniques) as well as a large number of particles (difficult to address due to computational costs). For a large number of particles, we found strong fermionic correlations exposed by the suppression of particle fluctuations. For a small number of particles, we show that the wave function calculated within the composite boson ansatz captures the Friedel-Wigner transition. The latter is shown in a regime in which strong correlations due to the Pauli exclusion principle arise, therefore, we conclude that the coboson ansatz reproduces the many particle physics of a confined Wigner molecule, even in the presence of strong deviations of the ideal bosonic behavior due to fermionic correlations.
The time evolution of occupation number is studied for fermionic or bosonic oscillator linearly fully coupled to several fermionic and bosonic heat baths. The influence of characteristics of thermal reservoirs of different statistics on the non-stationary population probability is analyzed at large times. Applications of the absence of equilibrium in such systems for creating a dynamic (nonstationary) memory storage are discussed.
The symmetrization postulate asserts that the state of particular species of particles can only be of one permutation symmetry type: symmetric for bosons and antisymmetric for fermions. We report some experimental results showing that pairs of photons indistinguishable by all degrees of freedom can exhibit not only a bosonic behavior, as expected for photons, but also a surprisingly sharp fermionic behavior under specific conditions.
We present novel approaches to the dynamics of an open quantum system coupled linearly to a non-Markovian fermionic or bosonic environment. In the first approach, we obtain a hierarchy of stochastic evolution equations of the diffusion type. For the bosonic case such a hierarchy has been derived and proven suitable for efficient numerical simulations recently [arXiv:1402.4647]. The stochastic fermionic hierarchy derived here contains Grassmannian noise, which makes it difficult to simulate numerically due to its anti-commutative multiplication. Therefore, in our second approach we eliminate th…
We show how to achieve perfect quantum state transfer and construct effective two-qubit gates between distant sites in engineered bosonic and fermionic networks. The Hamiltonian for the system can be determined by choosing an eigenvalue spectrum satisfying a certain condition, which is shown to be both sufficient and necessary in mirror-symmetrical networks. The natures of the effective two-qubit gates depend on the exchange symmetry for fermions and bosons. For fermionic networks, the gates are entangling (and thus universal for quantum computation). For bosonic networks, though the gates are…
In this paper we provide a novel and general way to construct the result of the action of any bosonic or fermionic operator represented in second quantized form on a state vector, without resorting to the matrix representation of operators and even to its elements. The new approach is based on our proposal to compactly enumerate the configurations (i.e., determinants for fermions, permanents for bosons) which are the elements of the state vector. This extremely simplifies the calculation of the action of an operator on a state vector. The computations of statical properties and of the evolutio…
It is shown that a similar functional form $S=a+b\ln N$ holds approximately for the information entropy S as function of the number of particles N for atoms, nuclei and atomic clusters (fermionic systems) and correlated boson-atoms in a trap (bosonic systems). It is also seen that rigorous inequalities previously found to hold between S and the kinetic energy T for fermionic systems, hold for bosonic systems as well. It is found that Landsberg's order parameter $Ω$ is an increasing function of N for the above systems. It is conjectured that the above properties are universal i.e. they do not d…

We report on the theoretical analysis of bosonic and fermionic non-interacting systems in a discrete two-particle quantum walk affected by different kinds of disorder. We considered up to 100-step QWs with a spatial, temporal and space-temporal disorder observing how the randomness and the wavefunction symmetry non-trivially affect the final spatial probability distribution, the transport properties and the Shannon entropy of the walkers.

We have constructed a unified framework for generalizing the finite-time thermodynamic behavior of statistically distinct bosonic and fermionic Stirling cycles with regenerative characteristics. In our formalism, working fluid consisting of particles obeying Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics are treated under equal footing and modelled as a collection of non-interacting harmonic and fermionic oscillators. In terms of frequency and population of the two oscillators, we have provided an interesting generalization for the definitions of heat and work that are valid for classical as well as…
Deformation quantization is a powerful tool for quantizing theories with bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. The star products involved generate the mathematical structures which have recently been used in attempts to analyze the algebraic properties of quantum field theory. In the context of quantum mechanics they provide a canonical quantization procedure for systems with either bosonic of fermionic degrees of freedom. We illustrate this procedure for a number a physical examples, including bosonic, fermionic and supersymmetric oscillators. We show how non-relativistic and relativistic…
We report on magneto-optical trapping of fermionic 53Cr atoms. A Zeeman-slowed atomic beam provides loading rates up to 3 10^6 /s. We present systematic characterization of the magneto-optical trap (MOT). We obtain up to 5 10^5 atoms in the steady state MOT. The atoms radiatively decay from the excited P state into metastable D states, and, due to the large dipolar magnetic moment of chromium atoms in these states, they can remain magnetically trapped in the quadrupole field gradient of the MOT. We study the accumulation of metastable 53Cr atoms into this magnetic trap. We also report on the f…

A universal entangler (UE) is a unitary operation which maps all pure product states to entangled states. It is known that for a bipartite system of particles $1,2$ with a Hilbert space $\mathbb{C}^{d_1}\otimes\mathbb{C}^{d_2}$, a UE exists when $\min{(d_1,d_2)}\geq 3$ and $(d_1,d_2)\neq (3,3)$. It is also known that whenever a UE exists, almost all unitaries are UEs; however to verify whether a given unitary is a UE is very difficult since solving a quadratic system of equations is NP-hard in general. This work examines the existence and construction of UEs of bipartite bosonic/fermionic syst…
The spin can be described in the star product formalism by extending the bosonic Moyal product in the fermionic sector. The fermionic star product is then the Clifford product of geometric algebra and it is possible to formulate the fermionic star product formalism in analogy to the bosonic star product formalism. For the fermionic star product description of spin, one can then establish the relation to other approaches that describe spin with fermionic variables, i.e. the operator formalism and the path integral formalism. It is shown that the fermionic star product formalism and the fermioni…
Symmetry transformations have proved useful in determining the algebraic structure and internal dynamical properties of physical systems. In the quantum Rabi model, invariance under parity symmetry transformation has been used to obtain exact solutions of the eigenvalue equation and very good approximations of the internal dynamics of the interacting atom-light system. In this article, two symmetry operators, characterized as "duality" symmetry operators, have been introduced which transform the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian into duality conjugates. The parity and duality symmetry operators constit…
Quantum theory sets a limit on the minimum time required to transform from an initial state to a target state. It is known as quantum speed limit time. quantum speed limit time can be used to determine the rate of quantum evolution for closed and open quantum systems. Given that in the real world we are dealing with open quantum systems, the study of quantum speed limit time for such systems has particular importance. In this work we consider the topological qubit realized by two Majorana modes. We consider the case in which the topological qubit is influenced by fermionic and bosonic environm…
We investigate the quantum interference effects in two types of matter-wave mixing experiments: one with initial matter waves prepared in independent Fock states (type I) and the other with each individual particle prepared in a same coherent superposition of states (type II). In the type I experiment, a symmetric wavefunction of bosons leads to constructive quantum interference and shows final state stimulation, while an anti-symmetric wavefunction of fermions results in destructive quantum interference and inhibited matter wave mixing. In the type II experiment, a coherent superposition stat…
The evolution of a quantum system towards thermal equilibrium is usually studied by approximate methods, which have their limits of validity and should be checked against analytically solvable models. In this paper, we propose an analytically solvable model to investigate the energy transfer between a bosonic bath and a fermionic chain which are nonlinearly-coupled to each other. The bosonic bath consists of an infinite collection of non-interacting bosonic modes, while the fermionic chain is represented by a chain of interacting fermions with nearest-neighbor interactions. We compare behavior…
Recently, much emphasis has been given to genuinely quantum reservoirs generically called fermionic reservoirs. These reservoirs are characterized by having finite levels, as opposed to bosonic reservoirs, which have infinite levels that can be populated via an increase in temperature. Given this, some studies are being carried out to explore the advantages of using quantum reservoirs, in particular in the operation of heat machines. In this work, we make a comparative study of a thermal refrigerator operating in the presence of either a bosonic or a fermionic reservoir, and we show that fermi…
We describe an efficient theoretical criterion suitable for the evaluation of the tripartite entanglement of any mixed three-boson or -fermion state, based on the notion of the entanglement of particles for bipartite systems of identical particles. Our approach allows one to quantify the accessible amount of quantum correlations in the systems without any violation of the local particle number superselection rule. A generalization of the tripartite negativity is here applied to some correlated systems including the continuous-time quantum walks of identical particles (both for bosons and fermi…
Quantum walks on lattices can give rise to relativistic wave equations in the long-wavelength limit, but going beyond the single-particle case has proven challenging, especially in more than one spatial dimension. We construct quantum cellular automata for distinguishable particles based on two different quantum walks, and show that by restricting to the antisymmetric and symmetric subspaces, respectively, a multiparticle theory for free fermions and bosons in three spatial dimensions can be produced. This construction evades a no-go theorem that prohibits the usual fermionization construction…
We study the steady state entanglement and correlations of an open system comprised of two coupled fermions in the equilibrium or nonequilibrium environments and distill the nonequilibrium contribution to the quantum correlations. We show that in the equilibrium condition, the steady-state quantum correlations exhibit non-monotonic behavior, while in the nonequilibrium case, the monotonicity is determined by many parameters. The entanglement vanishes abruptly upon the increase of the temperature (bias) and chemical potential bias, it witnesses a critical chemical potential above which the conc…

We present a hierarchical equations of motion approach, which allows a numerically exact simulation of nonequilibrium transport in general open quantum systems involving multiple macroscopic bosonic and fermionic environments. The performance of the method is demonstrated for a model of a nanosystem, which involves interacting electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom and is coupled to fermionic and bosonic baths. The results show the intricate interplay of electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in this nonequilibrium transport scenario for both voltage and thermally driven transpor…
The projective construction (the slave-particle approach) has played an very important role in understanding strongly correlated systems, such as the emergence of fermions, anyons, and gauge theory in quantum spin liquids and quantum Hall states. Recently, fermionic Projected Entangled Pair States (fPEPS) have been introduced to effciently represent many-body fermionic states. In this paper, we show that the strongly correlated bosonic/fermionic states obtained both from the projective construction and the fPEPS approach can be represented systematically as Grassmann tensor product states. Thi…
We study the tunneling dynamics of bosonic and fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gases from a hard wall trap, in which one of the walls is substituted by a delta potential. Using the Fermi-Bose map, the decay of the probability to remain in the trap is studied as a function of both the number of particles and the intensity of the end-cap delta laser. The fermionic gas is shown to be a good candidate to study deviations of the non-exponential decay of the single-particle type, whereas for the bosonic case a novel regime of non-exponential decay appears due to the contributions of different resonances o…
It is shown that fermionic polar molecules or atoms in a bilayer optical lattice can undergo the transition to a state with circulating currents, which spontaneously breaks the time reversal symmetry. Estimates of relevant temperature scales are given and experimental signatures of the circulating current phase are identified. Related phenomena in bosonic and spin systems with ring exchange are discussed.
The Weyl-Wigner-Moyal formalism of fermionic classical systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom is considered. This correspondence is studied by computing the relevant Stratonovich-Weyl quantizer. The Moyal $\star$-product, Wigner functions and normal ordering are obtained for generic fermionic systems. Finally, this formalism is used to perform the deformation quantization of the Fermi oscillator and the supersymmetric quantum mechanics.
We analyze the efficiency of quantum simulations of fermionic and bosonic models in trapped ions. In particular, we study the optimal time of entangling gates and the required number of total elementary gates. Furthermore, we exemplify these estimations in the light of quantum simulations of quantum field theories, condensed-matter physics, and quantum chemistry. Finally, we show that trapped-ion technologies are a suitable platform for implementing quantum simulations involving interacting fermionic and bosonic modes, paving the way for overcoming classical computers in the near future.
The celebrated Jordan--Wigner transformation provides an efficient mapping between spin chains and fermionic systems in one dimension. Here we extend this spin-fermion mapping to arbitrary tree structures, which enables mapping between fermionic and spin systems with nearest-neighbor coupling. The mapping is achieved with the help of additional spins at the junctions between one-dimensional chains. This property allows for straightforward simulation of Majorana braiding in spin or qubit systems.
We disclose the behaviour of quantum and classical correlations among all the different spatial-temporal regions of a space-time with an event horizon, comparing fermionic with bosonic fields. We show the emergence of conservation laws for entanglement and classical correlations, pointing out the crucial role that statistics plays in the information exchange (and more specifically, the entanglement tradeoff) across horizons. The results obtained here could shed new light on the problem of information behaviour in non-inertial frames and in the presence of horizons, giving a better insight abou…
We introduce the bosonic and fermionic ensembles of density matrices and study their entanglement. In the fermionic case, we show that random bipartite fermionic density matrices have non-positive partial transposition, hence they are typically entangled. The similar analysis in the bosonic case is more delicate, due to a large positive outlier eigenvalue. We compute the asymptotic ratio between the size of the environment and the size of the system Hilbert space for which random bipartite bosonic density matrices fail the PPT criterion, being thus entangled. We also relate moment computations…
We discuss the master equation approach to diffusive current of bosonic or fermionic carriers in one- and two-dimensional lattices. This approach is shown to reproduce all known results of the linear response theory, including the integer quantum Hall effect for fermionic carriers. The main advantage of the approach is that it allows to calculate the current beyond the linear response regime where new effects are found. In particular, we show that the Hall current can be inverted by changing orientation of the static force (electric field) relative to the primary axes of the lattice.
We relate the reduced density matrices of quadratic bosonic and fermionic models to their Green's function matrices in a unified way and calculate the scaling of bipartite entanglement of finite systems in an infinite universe exactly. For critical fermionic 2D systems at T=0, two regimes of scaling are identified: generically, we find a logarithmic correction to the area law with a prefactor dependence on the chemical potential that confirms earlier predictions based on the Widom conjecture. If, however, the Fermi surface of the critical system is zero-dimensional, we find an area law with a …
We show that dipolar bosons and fermions confined in a quasi-one-dimensional ring trap exhibit a rich variety of states because their interaction is inhomogeneous. For purely repulsive interactions, with increasing strength of the dipolar coupling there is a crossover from a gas-like state to an inhomogeneous crystal-like one. For small enough angles between the dipoles and the plane of the ring, there are regions with attractive interactions, and clustered states can form.
The dynamics of many-body fermionic systems are important in problems ranging from catalytic reactions at electrochemical surfaces, to transport through nanojunctions, and offer a prime target for quantum computing applications. Here we derive the set of conditions under which fermionic operators can be exactly replaced by bosonic operators that render the problem amenable to a large toolbox of dynamical methods while still capturing the correct dynamics of the $n$-body operators. Importantly, our analysis offers a simple guide on how one can exploit these simple maps to calculate nonequilibri…
We study the quantum dynamics of conversion of composite bosons into fermionic fragment species with increasing densities of bound fermion pairs using the open quantum system approach. The Hilbert space of $N$-state-function is decomposed into a composite boson subspace and an orthogonal fragment subspace of quasi-free fermions that enlarges as the composite boson constituents deviate from ideal boson commutation relations. The tunneling dynamics of coupled composite boson states in confined systems is examined, and the appearance of exceptional points under experimentally testable conditions …
Wick's theorem provides a connection between time ordered products of bosonic or fermionic fields, and their normal ordered counterparts. We consider a generic pair of operator orderings and we prove, by induction, the theorem that relates them. We name this the General Wick's Theorem (GWT) because it carries Wick's theorem as special instance, when one applies the GWT to time and normal orderings. We establish the GWT both for bosonic and fermionic operators, i.e. operators that satisfy c-number commutation and anticommutation relations respectively. We remarkably show that the GWT is the sam…
We discuss the theory of mixtures of Bosonic and Fermionic atoms in periodic potentials at zero temperature. We derive a general Bose--Fermi Hubbard Hamiltonian in a one--dimensional optical lattice with a superimposed harmonic trapping potential. We study the conditions for linear stability of the mixture and derive a mean field criterion for the onset of a Bosonic superfluid transition. We investigate the ground state properties of the mixture in the Gutzwiller formulation of mean field theory, and present numerical studies of finite systems. The Bosonic and Fermionic density distributions a…
Well-known (spinless) fermionic qubits may need more subtle consideration in comparison with usual (spinful) fermions. Taking into account a model with local fermionic modes, formally only the 'occupied' states |1> could be relevant for antisymmetry with respect to particles interchange, but 'vacuum' state |0> is not. Introduction of exchange rule for such fermionic qubits indexed by some 'positions' may look questionable due to general super-selection principle. However, a consistent algebraic construction of such 'super-indexed' qubits is presented in this work. Considered method has some re…
We investigate topological phase transitions driven by interaction and identify a novel topological Mott insulator state in one-dimensional fermionic optical superlattices through numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. Remarkably, the low-energy edge excitations change from spin-1/2 fermionic single-particle modes to spin-1 bosonic collective modes across the phase transition. Due to spin-charge separation, the low-energy theory is governed by an effective spin superexchange model, whereas the charge degree of freedom is fully gapped out. Such topological Mott state can …
Mixtures of bosonic and fermionic atoms in optical lattices provide a promising arena to study strongly correlated systems. In experiments realizing such mixtures in the quantum degenerate regime the temperature is a key parameter. In this work, we investigate the intrinsic heating and cooling effects due to an entropy-preserving raising of the optical lattice potential. We analyze this process, identify the generic behavior valid for a wide range of parameters, and discuss it quantitatively for the recent experiments with 87Rb and 40K atoms. In the absence of a lattice, we treat the bosons in…
We derive the relativistic transformation laws for the annihilation operators of the scalar field, the massive spin-1 vector field, the electromagnetic field and the spinor field. The technique developed here involves straightforward mathematical techniques based on fundamental quantum field theory, and is applicable to the study of entanglement in arbitrary coordinate transformations. In particular, it predicts particle creation for non-inertial motion. Furthermore, we present a unified description of relativistic transformations and multi-particle interferometry with bosons and fermions, whi…
We show that the dynamics of quenches in one dimension far off equilibrium can be described by power laws, but with exponents differing from the fully renormalized ones at lowest energies. Instead they depend on the initial state and its excitation energy. Furthermore, we found that for quenches to strong interactions unexpected similarities between systems in one and in infinite dimensions occur, indicating the dominance of local processes.
We extend the twin-space formulation of the hierarchical equations of motion approach in combination with the matrix product state representation (introduced in J. Chem. Phys. 150, 234102, [2019]) to nonequilibrium scenarios where the open quantum system is coupled to a hybrid fermionic and bosonic environment. The key ideas used in the extension are a reformulation of the hierarchical equations of motion for the auxiliary density matrices into a time-dependent Schrödinger-like equation for an augmented multi-dimensional wave function as well as a tensor decomposition into a product of low-ran…
Starting from divisibility problem for Fibonacci numbers we introduce Fibonacci divisors, related hierarchy of Golden derivatives in powers of the Golden Ratio and develop corresponding quantum calculus. By this calculus, the infinite hierarchy of Golden quantum oscillators with integer spectrum determined by Fibonacci divisors, the hierarchy of Golden coherent states and related Fock-Bargman representations in space of complex analytic functions are derived. It is shown that Fibonacci divisors with even and odd $k$ describe Golden deformed bosonic and fermionic quantum oscillators, correspond…
The string-net approach by Levin and Wen, and the local unitary transformation approach by Chen, Gu, and Wen, provide ways to classify topological orders with gappable edge in 2D bosonic systems. The two approaches reveal that the mathematical framework for 2+1D bosonic topological order with gappable edge is closely related to unitary fusion category theory. In this paper, we generalize these systematic descriptions of topological orders to 2D fermion systems. We find a classification of 2+1D fermionic topological orders with gappable edge in terms of the following set of data $(N^{ij}_k, F^{…
