We study a limited set of optical circuits for creating near maximal polarisation entanglement {\em without} the usual large vacuum contribution.
The optical circuits we consider involve passive interferometers, feed-forward detection, down-converters and squeezers. For input vacuum fields we find that the creation of maximal entanglement using such circuits is impossible when conditioned on two detected auxiliary photons. So far, there have been no experiments with more auxiliary photons. Thus, based on the minimum complexity of the circuits required, if near maximal polarisation entanglement is possible it seems unlikely that it will be implemented experimentally with the current resources.
We propose a scheme to for fast conditional phase shift and creation entanglement of two qubits that interact with a common heat bath. Dynamical decoupling is applied in the scheme so that it works even in the regime of strong interaction between qubits and environment. Our scheme does not request any direct interaction between the two qubits.
We experimentally demonstrate the entanglement can be created on two distant particles using separate state. We show that two data particles can share some entanglement while one ancilla particle always remains separable from them during the experimental evolution of the system. Our experiment can be viewed as a benchmark to illustrate the idea that no prior entanglement is necessary to create entanglement.
We consider a general unitary operator acting on two qubits in a product state. We find the conditions such that the state of the qubits after the action is as entangled as possible. We also consider the possibility of using ancilla qubits to increase the entanglement.
We investigate three superconducting flux qubits coupled in a loop. In this setup, tripartite entanglement can be created in a natural, controllable, and stable way. Both generic kinds of tripartite entanglement -the W type as well as the GHZ type entanglement- can be identified among the eigenstates. We also discuss the violation of Bell inequalities in this system and show the impact of a limited measurement fidelity on the detection of entanglement and quantum nonlocality.
We explore the role played by the intrinsic decoherence in superconducting charge qubits in the presence of a microwave field applied as a magnetic flux. We study how the delayed creation of entanglement, which is opposite to the sudden death of entanglement, can be induced. We compute the time evolution of the population inversion, total correlation and entanglement, taking into account the junction mixed state and dissipation of the cavity field. We show that although decoherence destroys the correlation of the junction and field, information of the initial state may be obtained via quasi-pr…
We consider the optimal control problem in a two-qubit system with bounded amplitude. Two cases are studied: quantum state preparation and entanglement creation. Cost functions, fidelity and concurrence, are optimized over bang-off controls for different values of the total duration, respectively. For quantum state preparation problem, three critical time points are determined with high precision, and optimal controls are obtained for different durations. A better estimation of the quantum speed limit is obtained, so is the time-optimal control. For entanglement creation problem, two critical …
I show that entanglement between two qubits can be generated if the two qubits interact with a common heat bath in thermal equilibrium, but do not interact directly with each other. In most situations the entanglement is created for a very short time after the interaction with the heat bath is switched on, but depending on system, coupling, and heat bath, the entanglement may persist for arbitrarily long times. This mechanism sheds new light on the creation of entanglement. A particular example of two quantum dots in a closed cavity is discussed, where the heat bath is given by the blackbody r…
Large photon-number path entanglement is an important resource for enhanced precision measurements and quantum imaging. We present a general constructive protocol to create any large photon number path-entangled state based on the conditional detection of single photons. The influence of imperfect detectors is considered and an asymptotic scaling law is derived.
In this thesis, we report the theoretical and experimental investigations towards the creation, characterization, and manipulation of quantum entanglement in a photonic system. We examine two different aspects of quantum entanglement: In the first part, we discuss the experimental method for the preparation and characterization of SPDC-based polarization-entangled photon source. We provide a review study comparing different Entanglement Measures for non-maximally entangled two-qubit pure states and extend this analysis to higher-dimensional systems. In the second part, we study the entanglemen…
We investigate the creation of entanglement between two quantum emitters interacting with a realistic common stationary electromagnetic field out of thermal equilibrium. In the case of two qubits we show that the absence of equilibrium allows the generation of steady entangled states, which is inaccessible at thermal equilibrium and is realized without any further external action on the two qubits. We first give a simple physical interpretation of the phenomenon in a specific case and then we report a detailed investigation on the dependence of the entanglement dynamics on the various physical…
The concept of time delayed creation of entanglement by the dissipative process of spontaneous emission is investigated. A threshold effect for the creation of entanglement is found that the initially unentangled qubits can be entangled after a finite time despite the fact that the coherence between the qubits exists for all times. This delayed creation of entanglement, that we call sudden birth of entanglement, is opposite to the currently extensively discussed sudden death of entanglement and is characteristic for transient dynamics of one-photon entangled states of the system. We determine …
The time evolution of the entanglement of a pair of two spin qubits is investigated when the two qubits simultaneously couple to an environment of an anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin chain. The entanglement of the two spin qubits can be created and is a periodic function of the time if the magnetic field is greater than a critical value. If the two spin qubits are in the Bell state, the entanglement can be stored with relatively large value even when the magnetic field is large.
The dynamics of entanglement between three - level atoms coupled to the common vacuum is investigated. We show that the collective effects such as collective damping, dipole - dipole interaction and the cross coupling between orthogonal dipoles, play a crucial role in the process of creation of entanglement. In particular, the additional cross coupling enhances the production of entanglement. For the specific initial states we find that the effect of delayed sudden birth of entanglement, recently invented by Ficek and Tanas [Phys. Rev. A 77, o54301(2008)] in the case of two - level atoms, can …
We investigate creation, manipulation, and steering of entanglement in spin chains from the viewpoint of quantum communication between distant parties. We demonstrate how global parametric driving of the spin-spin coupling and/or local time-dependent Zeeman fields produce a large amount of entanglement between the first and the last spin of the chain. This occurs whenever the driving frequency meets a resonance condition, identified as "entanglement resonance". Our approach marks a promising step towards an efficient quantum state transfer or teleportation in solid state system. Following the …
We present a protocol that allows the generation of a maximally entangled state between individual atoms held in spatially separate cavities. Assuming perfect detectors and neglecting spontaneous emission from the atoms, the resulting idealized scheme is deterministic. Under more realistic conditions, when the the atom-cavity interaction departs from the strong coupling regime, and considering imperfect detectors, we show that the scheme is robust against experimental inefficiencies and yields probabilistic entanglement of very high fidelity.
We use the approach of "transitionless quantum driving" proposed by Berry to construct shortcuts to the population transfer and the creation of maximal entanglement between two $Λ$-type atoms based on the cavity quantum electronic dynamics (CQED) system. An effective Hamiltonian is designed by resorting to an auxiliary excited level, a classical driving field and an extra cavity field mode to supplement or substitute the original reference Hamiltonian, and steer the system evolution along its instantaneous eigenstates in an arbitrarily short time, speeding up the rate of population transfer an…
We discuss a model of two nonlinear Kerr-like oscillators, mutually coupled and excited by parametric process. We show that the system's evolution, starting from Werner-like states, remains closed within a small set of two-mode n-photon states the system, and pure two-qubit entangled state can be generated. For some initial Werner-like states delayed entanglement generation can be observed. We investigate the influence of two damping mechanisms on the system's evolution. We show that for the both cases, the entanglement can survive despite the presence of damping, and the effects of sudden ent…
We consider an open quantum system of N not directly interacting spins (qubits) in contact with both local and collective thermal environments. The qubit-environment interactions are energy conserving. We trace out the variables of the thermal environments and N-2 qubits to obtain the time-dependent reduced density matrix for two arbitrary qubits. We numerically simulate the reduced dynamics and the creation of entanglement (concurrence) as a function of the parameters of the thermal environments and the number of qubits, N. Our results demonstrate that the two-qubit entanglement generally dec…
We report the creation of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states with up to 14 qubits. By investigating the coherence of up to 8 ions over time, we observe a decay proportional to the square of the number of qubits. The observed decay agrees with a theoretical model which assumes a system affected by correlated, Gaussian phase noise. This model holds for the majority of current experimental systems developed towards quantum computation and quantum metrology.
Quantum correlations have fundamental and technological interest, and hence many measures have been introduced to quantify them. Some hierarchical orderings of these measures have been established, e.g., discord is bigger than entanglement, and we present a class of bipartite states, called premeasurement states, for which several of these hierarchies collapse to a single value. Because premeasurement states are the kind of states produced when a system interacts with a measurement device, the hierarchy collapse implies that the uncertainty of an observable is quantitatively connected to the q…
A necessary and sufficient condition for the maximal entanglement of bipartite nonorthogonal pure states is found. The condition is applied to the maximal entanglement of coherent states. Some new classes of maximally entangled coherent states are explicited constructed; their limits give rise to maximally entangled Bell-like states.
We investigate a simple arrangement of coupled harmonic oscillators which brings out some interesting effects concerning creation of entanglement. It is well known that if each member in a linear chain of coupled harmonic oscillators is prepared in a ``classical state'', such as a pure coherent state or a mixed thermal state, no entanglement is created in the rotating wave approximation. On the other hand, if one of the oscillators is prepared in a nonclassical state (pure squeezed state, for instance), entanglement may be created between members of the chain. In the setup considered here, we …
We study theoretically the appearance of quantum correlations in two- and three-electron scattering in single and double dots. The key role played by transport resonances into entanglement formation between the single-particle states is shown. Both reflected and transmitted components of the scattered particle wavefunction are used to evaluate the quantum correlations between the incident carrier and the bound particle(s) in the dots. Our investigation provides a guideline for the analysis of decoherence effects due to the Coulomb scattering in semiconductor quantum dots structures.
We present some applications of high efficiency quantum interrogation ("interaction free measurement") for the creation of entangled states of separate atoms and of separate photons. The quantum interrogation of a quantum object in a superposition of object-in and object-out leaves the object and probe in an entangled state. The probe can then be further entangled with other objects in subsequent quantum interrogations. By then projecting out those cases were the probe is left in a particular final state, the quantum objects can themselves be left in various entangled states. In this way we sh…
We review some parametric families of 2-qubit states for which concurrence and maximal singlet fraction (MSF) have different and even opposite behaviour. For states considered in this work, maximal achievable fidelity (MAF), a quantity derived by Verstraete and Verschelde in 2003, shows a better agreement with concurrence and complies with important features required to be considered a good entanglement measure.
Absolutely separable states form a special subset of the set of all separable states, as they remain separable under any global unitary transformation unlike other separable states. In this work we consider the set of absolutely separable bipartite states and show that it is convex and compact in any arbitrary dimensional Hilbert space. Through a generic approach of construction of suitable hermitian operators we prove the completeness of the separation axiom for identifying any separable state that is not absolutely separable. We demonstrate the action of such witness operators in different q…
We theoretically demonstrate a method for producing the maximally path-entangled state (1/Sqrt[2]) (|N,0> + exp[iN phi] |0,N>) using intensity-symmetric multiport beamsplitters, single photon inputs, and either photon-counting postselection or conditional measurement. The use of postselection enables successful implementation with non-unit efficiency detectors. We also demonstrate how to make the same state more conveniently by replacing one of the single photon inputs by a coherent state.
Quantum chaotic maps can efficiently generate pseudo-random states carrying almost maximal multipartite entanglement, as characterized by the probability distribution of bipartite entanglement between all possible bipartitions of the system. We show that such multipartite entanglement is robust, in the sense that, when realistic noise is considered, distillable entanglement of bipartitions remains almost maximal up to a noise strength that drops only polynomially with the number of qubits.
We study an initially inverted three-level atom in the lambda configuration embedded in a waveguide, interacting with a propagating single-photon pulse. Depending on the temporal shape of the pulse, the system behaves either as an optimal universal cloning machine, or as a highly efficient deterministic source of maximally entangled photon pairs. This quantum transistor operates over a wide range of frequencies, and can be implemented with today's solid-state technologies.
We present a quantum repeater protocol that generates the elementary segments of entangled photons through the communication of qubus in coherent states. The input photons at the repeater stations can be in arbitrary states to save the local state preparation time for the operations. The flexibility of the scheme accelerates the generation of the elementary segments (close to the exact Bell states) to a high rate for practical quantum communications. The entanglement connection to long distances is simplified and sped up, possibly realizing an entangled pair of high quality within the time in …
Maximally entangled mixed states are those states that, for a given mixedness, achieve the greatest possible entanglement. For two-qubit systems and for various combinations of entanglement and mixedness measures, the form of the corresponding maximally entangled mixed states is determined primarily analytically. As measures of entanglement, we consider entanglement of formation, relative entropy of entanglement, and negativity; as measures of mixedness, we consider linear and von Neumann entropies. We show that the forms of the maximally entangled mixed states can vary with the combination of…
We propose a protocol that allows both the creation and distribution of entanglement, resulting in two distant parties (Alice and Bob) conclusively sharing a bipartite Bell State. The system considered is a graph of three-level objects ("qutrits") coupled by SU(3) exchange operators. The protocol begins with a third party (Charlie) encoding two lattice sites in unentangled states, and allowing unitary evolution under time. Alice and Bob perform a projective measurement on their respective qutrits at a given time, and obtain a maximally-entangled Bell state with a certain probablility. We also …
Bell's inequality violation (BIQV) for correlations of polarization is studied for a {\it product} state of two two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) states. The violation allowed is shown to attain its maximal limit for all values of the squeezing parameter, $ζ$. We show via an explicit example that a state whose entanglement is not maximal allow maximal BIQV. The Wigner function of the state is non negative and the average value of either polarization is nil.
A practical scheme for entanglement creation between distant atoms located inside a single-mode optical cavity is discussed. We show that the degree of entanglement and the time it takes for the entanglement to reach its optimum value is a sensitive function the initial conditions and the position of the atoms inside the cavity mode. It is found that the entangled properties of the two atoms can readily be extracted from dynamics of a simple two-level system. Effectively, we engineer two coupled qubits whose the dynamics are analogous to that of a driven single two-level system. It is found th…
We study the dynamics of entanglement between two spins which is created by the coupling to a common thermal reservoir. The reservoir is a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Ising transverse field chain thermally excited, the two defect spins couple to two spins of the chain which can be at a macroscopic distance. In the weak-coupling and low-temperature limit the spin chain is mapped onto a bath of linearly interacting oscillators using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation. We analyse the time evolution of the density matrix of the two defect spins for transient times and deduce the entanglement which is ge…
In the solid-state circuit QED system and based on the homodyne measurement in dispersive regime, we demonstrate that a homodyne-current-based feedback can create and stabilize highly entangled two-qubit states in the presence of moderate noisy environment. Particularly, we present an extended analysis for the current-based Markovian feedback, which leads to an improved filtered-current-based feedback scheme. We show that this is essential for us to achieve the desirable control effect in present system.
In [M. Piani et al., arXiv:1103.4032 (2011)] an activation protocol was introduced which maps the general non-classical (multipartite) correlations between given systems into bipartite entanglement between the systems and local ancillae by means of a potentially highly entangling interaction. Here, we study how this activation protocol can be used to entangle the starting systems themselves via entanglement swapping through a measurement on the ancillae. Furthermore, we bound the relative entropy of quantumness (a naturally arising measure of non-classicality in the scheme of Piani et al. abov…
Several definitions of classicality are considered, such as P-representability, generalized coherent states and separable states. These notions are treated under a simple and general definition based on convex sets, which enables the use of the Hahn-Banach theorem to separate classical states from nonclassical ones. Nonclassicality linear witnesses are constructed, based on the observables available in a given physical situation. Some examples of nonclassical states are considered, with detection schemes available nowadays. Reviewing the concept of entanglement potential from a different persp…
We show that non-maximal entangled states can be used for implementing, with unit probability, remote generalized measurements (POVMs). We show how any n-qubit POVM can be applied remotely and derive its entanglement cost. The later turns out to be equal to the entanglement capability for a class of POVMs. This suggests a one-to-one relation between sub-sets of POVM operations and entanglement.
For two two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity field that is driven and heavily damped, the steady-state can be entangled by shining an un-modulated driving laser on the system [S.Schneider, G. J. Milburn Phys. Rev A 65, 042107, 2002]. We present a scheme to significantly increase the steady-state entanglement by using homodyne-mediated feedback, in which the driving laser is modulated by the homodyne photocurrent derived from the cavity output. Such feedback can increase the nonlinear response to both the decoherence process of the two-qubit system and the coherent evolution of indiv…
In this Letter we propose a robust quantum repeater architecture building on the original DLCZ protocol [L.M. Duan \textit{et al.}, Nature \textbf{414}, 413 (2001)]. The architecture is based on two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel-type interference which relaxes the long distance stability requirements by about 7 orders of magnitude, from sub wavelength for the single photon interference required by DLCZ to the coherence length of the photons. Our proposal provides an exciting possibility for robust and realistic long distance quantum communication.
We apply the continuous variable approach to study entangled dynamics of coupled harmonic oscillators interacting with a thermal reservoir and to a deterministic creation of entanglement in an atomic ensemble located inside a high-Q ring cavity. In the case of harmonic oscillators, we show that a suitable unitary transformation of the position and momentum operators transforms the system to a set of independent harmonic oscillators with only one of them coupled to the reservoir. Working in the Wigner representation of the density operator, we find that the covariance matrix has a block diagona…
We propose a robust and decoherence insensitive scheme to generate controllable entangled states of two three-level atoms interacting with an optical cavity and a laser beam. Losses due to atomic spontaneous transitions and to cavity decay are efficiently suppressed by employing fractional adiabatic passage and appropriately designed atom-field couplings. In this scheme the two atoms traverse the cavity-mode and the laser beam in opposite directions as opposed to other entanglement schemes in which the atoms are required to have fixed locations inside a cavity. We also show that the coherence …
Entanglement represents an important resource for quantum information processing, but its generation itself requires physical resources that are limited. We propose a scheme for generating a wide class of entangled qudit-type states of optical field modes at sites separated by noisy medium when only weak optical nonlinearities are available at both sites. The protocol is also based on exploiting a weak probe field, transmitted between the sites and used for generation of quantum correlations between two spatially separated field modes. The idea of probabilistic entanglement enhancement by meas…
We study the multipartite correlations of the multi-atom dark states, which are characterized by the atomic squeezing beyond the pairwise entanglement. It is shown that, in the photon storage process with atomic ensemble via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) mechanism, the atomic squeezing and the pairwise entanglement can be created by adiabatically manipulating the Rabi frequency of the classical light field on the atomic ensemble. We also consider the sudden death for the atomic squeezing and the pairwise entanglement under various decoherence channels. An optimal time for gene…
It shown that when one of the components of a product channel is entanglement breaking, the output state with maximal p-norm is always a product state. This result complements Shor's theorem that both minimal entropy and Holevo capacity are additive for entanglement breaking channels. It is also shown how Shor's results can be recovered from the p-norm results by considering their behavior for p close to one.
The wave-particle duality of light has led to two different encodings for optical quantum information processing. Several approaches have emerged based either on particle-like discrete-variable states, e.g. finite-dimensional quantum systems, or on wave-like continuous-variable states, e.g. infinite-dimensional systems. Here, we demonstrate the first measurement-induced generation of entanglement between optical qubits of these different types, located at distant places and connected by a lossy channel. Such hybrid entanglement, which is a key resource for a variety of recently proposed scheme…
Entanglement is an indispensable quantum resource for quantum information technology. In continuous-variable quantum optics, photon subtraction can increase the entanglement between Gaussian states of light, but for mixed states the extent of this entanglement increase is poorly understood. In this work, we use an entanglement measure based the Rényi-2 entropy to prove that single-photon subtraction increases bipartite entanglement by no more than log 2. This value coincides with the maximal amount of bipartite entanglement that can be achieved with one photon. The upper bound is valid for all…
We propose a Bell inequality for high-dimensional bipartite systems obtained by binning local measurement outcomes and show that it is tight. We find a binning method for even d-dimensional measurement outcomes for which this Bell inequality is maximally violated by maximally entangled states. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Bell inequality is applicable to continuous variable systems and yields strong violations for two-mode squeezed states.
We show how to create maximally entangled EPR pairs between spatially distant atoms, each of them inside a high-Q optical cavity, by sending photons through a general, noisy channel, such as a standard optical fiber. An error correction scheme that uses few auxiliary atoms in each cavity effectively eliminates photoabsorption and other transmission errors. This realizes the `absorption free channel.' A concatenation protocol using the absorption free channel allows for quantum communication with single qubits over distances much larger than the coherence length of the channel.
The maximally entangled state can be in a mixed state as well as the well-known pure state. Taking the negativity as a measure of entanglement, we study the entanglement dynamics of bipartite, mixed maximally entangled states (MMESs) in multipartite cavity-reservoir systems. It is found that the MMES can exhibit the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death, which is quite different from the asymptotic decay of the pure-Bell-state case. We also find that maximal entanglement cannot guarantee maximal nonlocality and the MMES does not correspond to the state with maximal measurement-induced nonloc…
We solve the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian with time-dependent coupling parameters under dipole and rotating-wave approximation for a three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystal (PC) single mode cavity with a sufficiently high quality (Q) factor. We then exploit the results to show how to create a maximally entangled state of two atoms, and how to implement several quantum logic gates: a dual-rail Hadamard gate, a dual-rail NOT gate, and a SWAP gate. The atoms in all of these operations are syncronized, which is not the case in previous studies [1,2] in PCs. Our method has the potential for extensio…
We propose a method to refine entanglement via swapping from a pair of squeezed vacuum states by performing the Bell measurement of number sum and phase difference. The resultant states are maximally entangled by adjusting the two squeezing parameters to the same value. We then describe the teleportation of number states by using the entangled states prepared in this way.
We report the position-inhomogeneous quantum walk (IQW) can be utilized to produce the maximal high dimensional entanglement while maintaining the quadratic speedup spread of the wave-function. Our calculations show that the maximal coin-walker entanglement can be generated in any odd steps or asymptotically in even steps, and the nearly maximal entanglement can be obtained in even steps after $2$. We implement the IQW by a stable resource-saving time-bin optical network, in which a polarization Sagnac loop is employed to realize the precisely tunable phase shift. Our approach opens up an effi…
We describe how to implement quantum logic operations in a silicon-based quantum computer with phosphorus atoms serving as qubits. The information is stored in the states of nuclear spins and the conditional logic operations are implemented through the electron spins using nuclear-electron hyperfine and electron-electron exchange interactions. The electrons in our computer should stay coherent only during implementation of one Control-Not gate. The exchange interaction is constant and selective excitations are provided by a magnetic field gradient. The quantum logic operations are implemented …
We present a scheme for dissipatively generating maximal entanglement in a heralded manner. Our setup requires incoherent interactions with two thermal baths at different temperatures, but no source of work or control. A pair of $(d+1)$-dimensional quantum systems is first driven to an entangled steady state by the temperature gradient, and maximal entanglement in dimension $d$ can then be heralded via local filters. We discuss experimental prospects considering an implementation in superconducting systems.
By exactly solving the underlying Schödinger equation we show that one and the same resonant cavity can be used as a catalyst to maximally entangle atoms of two nonidentical groups. The generation scheme is realistic and advantageous in the sense that it is deterministic, efficient, scalable and immune from decoherence effects.
This Article investigates dissipative preparation of entangled non-equilibrium steady states (NESS). We construct a collision model where the open system consists of two qubits which are coupled to heat reservoirs with different temperatures. The baths are modeled by sequences of qubits interacting with the open system. The model can be studied in different dynamical regimes: with and without environmental memory effects. We report that only a certain bath temperature range allows for entangled NESS. Furthermore, we obtain minimal and maximal critical values for the heat current through the sy…
