We report a rich spectrum of isolated solitons residing inside ({\it embedded } into) the continuous radiation spectrum in a simple model of three-wave spatial interaction in a second-harmonic-generating planar optical waveguide equipped with a quasi-one-dimensional Bragg grating. An infinite sequence of fundamental embedded solitons are found, which differ by the number of internal oscillations. Branches of these zero-walkoff spatial solitons give rise, through bifurcations, to several secondary branches of walking solitons. The structure of the bifurcating branches suggests a multistable configuration of spatial optical solitons, which may find straightforward applications for all-optical switching.
Embedded solitons are rare self-localized nonlinear structures that, counterintuitively, survive inside a continuous background of resonant states. While this topic has been widely studied in nonlinear optics, it has received almost no attention in the field of Bose-Einstein condensation. In this work, we consider experimentally realizable Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in one-dimensional optical lattices and demonstrate that they support continuous families of stable three-dimensional (3D) embedded solitons. These solitons can exist inside the resonant continuous Bloch bands because they ar…
Embedded solitons are exceptional modes in nonlinear-wave systems with the propagation constant falling in the system's propagation band. An especially challenging topic is seeking for such modes in nonlinear dynamical lattices (discrete systems). We address this problem for a system of coupled discrete equations modeling the light propagation in an array of tunnel-coupled waveguides with a combination of intrinsic quadratic (second-harmonic-generating) and cubic nonlinearities. Solutions for discrete embedded solitons (DESs) are constructed by means of two analytical approximations, adjusted,…
It was recently found that, under the action of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman splitting (ZS), binary BEC with intrinsic cubic nonlinearity supports families of gap solitons, provided that the kinetic energy is negligible in comparison with the SOC and ZS terms. We demonstrate that, also under the action of SOC and ZS, a similar setting may be introduced for BEC with two components representing different atomic states, resonantly coupled by microwave radiation, while the Poisson equation accounts for the feedback of the two-component atomic wave function onto the radiation. The micro…

The generation of high-intensity optical fields from harmonic-wave photons, interacting via a cross-phase modulation with dark solitons both propagating in a Kerr nonlinear medium, is examined. The focus is on a pump consisting of time-entangled dark-soliton patterns, forming a periodic waveguide along the path of the harmonic-wave probe. It is shown that an increase of the strength of cross-phase modulation respective to the self-phase modulation, favors soliton-mode proliferation in the bound-state spectrum of the trapped harmonic-wave probe. The induced soliton modes, which display the stru…
We address the dynamics of two-dimensional (2D) truncated Airy waves and three-component solitons in the system of two fundamental-frequency and second-harmonic fields, coupled by quadratic (chi^(2)) terms. The system models second-harmonic-generating optical media and atomic-molecular mixtures in Bose-Einstein condensates. In addition to stable solitons, the system maintains truncated-Airy-waves states in either one of the fundamental-frequency components, represented by exact solutions, which are stable, unlike the Airy waves in the degenerate (two-component) chi^(2) system. It is also possi…
We present a model of soliton propagation in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearity. Criteria for solitons to exist in such waveguides are developed and two example nano-waveguide structures are simulated as proof of concept. Interactions between quadratic solitons and dispersive waves are analysed giving predictions closely matching soliton propagation simulations. The example structures are found to support five different regimes of soliton and quasi-soliton existence. Pulse propagation in these example waveguides has been simulated confirming the possibility of soliton generation at experim…
We propose a novel method based on the so-called shortcut to adiabatic passage techniques to achieve fast compression of temporal solitons in a nonlinear waveguide. We demonstrate that soliton compression could be achieved, in principle, at an arbitrarily small distance by inverse engineering the pulse width and the nonlinearity of the medium. The proposed scheme could possibly be exploited for various short-distance communication protocols and may be even in nonlinear guided wave-optics devices and generation of ultrashort soliton pulses.
Conditions of optimal (synchronized) collisions of any number of solitons and breathers are studied within the framework of the Gardner equation with positive cubic nonlinearity, which in the limits of small and large amplitudes tends to other long-wave models, the classic and the modified Korteweg -- de Vries equations. The local solution for an isolated soliton or breather within the Gardner equation is obtained. The wave amplitude in the focal point is calculated exactly. It exhibits a linear superposition of partial amplitudes of the solitons and breathers. The crucial role of the choice o…
