The effect of mutual interaction between dark solitons and dispersive waves is investigated numerically and analytically. The condition of the resonant scattering of dispersive waves on dark solitons is derived and compared against the results of numerical simulations. It is shown that the interaction with intense dispersive waves affects the dynamics of the soltons strongly changing their frequencies and accelerating or decelerating the solitons. It is also demonstrated that two dark solitons can form a cavity for dispersive weaves bouncing between the two dark solitons. The differences of the resonant scattering of the dispersive waves on the dark and bright solitons are discussed. In particular we demonstrate that two dark solitons and dispersive wave bouncing in between them create solitonic cavity with convex "mirrors" unlike the concave "mirror" in case of the bright solitons.
We report the experimental observation of multiple dispersive waves emitted in the anomalous dispersion region of an optical fiber from a train of dark solitons. Each individual dispersive wave can be associated to one particular dark soliton of the train, using phase-matching arguments involving higher-order dispersion and soliton velocity. For a large number of dark solitons (>10), we observe the formation of a continuum associated with the efficient emission of dispersive waves.
We have presented theoretical and numerical studies on interactions of dispersive waves with second order solitons. Disperive wave with considerable intensity resonantly colliding with the second order solitons can lead to acceleration/decceleration of the later with subsequent central frequency shifts, but still well preserve the oscillating structure of the 2-solitons. The 2-soliton creates an effective periodical refractive index profile and thus reflected and transmitted dispersive waves generate new spectral bands with sharp peak structures. When resonant dispersive waves interact with tw…
We study the formation of gap solitons in the presence of parametric pump. It is shown that parametric pump can stabilize stationary solitons continuously emitting dispersive waves. The resonant interactions of the radiation and the solitons are studied and it is shown that the solitons can be effectively controlled by the radiation. In particular it is shown that the solitons can collide or to get pinned to inhomogeneities due to the interactions mediated by the resonant radiation.
We demonstrate that trapping of dispersive waves between two optical solitons takes place when resonant scattering of the waves on the solitons leads to nearly perfect reflections. The momentum transfer from the radiation to solitons results in their mutual attraction and a subsequent collision. The spectrum of the trapped radiation can either expand or shrink in the course of the propagation, which is controlled by arranging either collision or separation of the solitons.
We investigate the impact of nonlocality, owing to diffusive behavior, on transverse instabilities of a dark stripe propagating in a defocusing cubic medium. The nonlocal response turns out to have a strongly stabilizing effect both in the case of a single soliton input and in the regime where dispersive shock waves develop "multisoliton regime". Such conclusions are supported by the linear stability analysis and numerical simulation of the propagation.
For waveguides with two separate regions of anomalous dispersion, it is possible to create a quasi-stable two-color solitary wave. In this paper we consider how those waves interact with dispersive radiation, both generation of Cherenkov radiation and scattering of incident dispersive waves. We derive the analytic resonance conditions and verify them through numeric experiments. We also report incident radiation driving the internal oscillations of the soliton during the scattering process in case of an intense incident radiation. We generalize the resonance conditions for the case of an oscil…
We examine a coherently-driven, dispersion-managed, passive Kerr fiber ring resonator and report the first direct experimental observation of dispersive wave emission by temporal cavity solitons. Our observations are in excellent agreement with analytical predictions and they are fully corroborated by numerical simulations. These results lead to a better understanding of the behavior of temporal cavity solitons under conditions where higher-order dispersion plays a significant role. Significantly, since temporal cavity solitons manifest themselves in monolithic microresonators, our results are…
We study resonant radiation generated by bound solitons in a twin-core fiber near zero-dispersion wavelength, in the presence of higher order dispersion terms. We propose a theoretical description of dispersive wave generation mechanism and derive resonance conditions. The presence of third order dispersion term leads to generation of polychromatic dispersive radiation and transition from the regime of center of mass oscillations to the regime of amplitude oscillations. Such a transition is not reproduced in the case of symmetric fourth order dispersion.
We introduce a mechanism to stabilize spatiotemporal solitons in Kerr nonlinear media, based on the dispersion of linear coupling between the field components forming the soliton states. Specifically, we consider solitons in a two-core guiding structure with inter-core coupling dispersion (CD). We show that CD profoundly affects properties of the solitons, causing the complete stabilization of the otherwise highly unstable spatiotemporal solitons in Kerr media with focusing nonlinearity. We also find that the presence of CD stimulates the formation of bound states, which however are unstable.
We demonstrate that the relatively small power induced changes in the soliton wavenumber comparable with splitting of the effective indexes of the orthogonally polarized waveguide modes result in significant changes of the efficiency of the interaction between solitons and dispersive waves and can be used to control energy transfer between the soliton and newly generated waves and to delay or accelerate solitons.
Soliton-soliton collisions have a crucial role in enhancing the spectrum of dispersive waves in optical fibers and collisions among in-phase solitons lead to a dramatic enhancement of the dispersive wave power, as well as to its significant spectral reshaping. We obtained a simple analytical model to estimate the spectral position, width and amplitude of the dispersive waves induced by a collision of two in-phase solitons. We tested our theory in the case of a dual concentric core microstructured fiber.
We present a numerical investigation of the propagation dynamics of a truncated Airy pulse in a highly dispersive and nonlinear medium by employing the split-step Fourier transform method and look, in particular, into the effects of fourth order dispersion (FOD) and cubic-quintic-septic nonlinearity on pulse evolution. Presence of FOD cancels the Airy pulse self-acceleration along with eclipsing the oscillatory tail during propagation in the linear regime. Further, we observe soliton shedding at low input pulse power in the presence of cubic and quintic nonlinearity and negative FOD. The emerg…
Taking advantage of an extended Lugiato--Lefever equation with third-order dispersion, we numerically show that dark cavity solitons formed in normal dispersion of microresonators are capable of emitting dispersive waves in both normal and anomalous dispersion regions, resembling the behavior of the commonly encountered bright cavity solitons. The generated dispersive waves can be accurately predicted by the dissipative radiation theory. In addition, we demonstrate the stability enhancement of Kerr frequency combs in normal dispersion regime in case the dispersive wave is emitted by dark solit…
We report on new types of two-component one-dimensional dark solitons (DSs) in a model of a dual-core waveguide with normal group-velocity dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity in both cores, the coupling between which is dispersive too. In the presence of the dispersive coupling, quiescent DSs supported by the zero-frequency background are always gray, being stable with the out-of-phase background, i.e., for opposite signs of the fields in the cores. On the contrary, the background with a nonzero frequency supports quiescent black solitons which may be stable for both out- and in-phase backgrounds…
Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-sustaining optical wavepackets in resonators. They use the Kerr nonlinearity to both compensate dispersion and to offset optical loss. Besides providing insights into nonlinear resonator physics, they can be applied in frequency metrology, precision clocks, and spectroscopy. Like other optical solitons, the dissipative Kerr soliton can radiate power in the form of a dispersive wave through a process that is the optical analogue of Cherenkov radiation. Dispersive waves typically consist of an ensemble of optical modes. A limiting case is demonstrated in which …
We present a model of soliton propagation in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearity. Criteria for solitons to exist in such waveguides are developed and two example nano-waveguide structures are simulated as proof of concept. Interactions between quadratic solitons and dispersive waves are analysed giving predictions closely matching soliton propagation simulations. The example structures are found to support five different regimes of soliton and quasi-soliton existence. Pulse propagation in these example waveguides has been simulated confirming the possibility of soliton generation at experim…
Concept of spectral soliton coupling is proposed to explain the group-velocity-matching dispersive wave generation and the soliton spectral tunneling effect. Soliton eigen state is found corresponding to a spectral phase profile under which the soliton phase shifts induced by the dispersion and the nonlinearity are instantaneously counterbalanced. A local but non-eigen soliton pulse will shed off energy and form radiations at other wavelengths, during the coupling to the soliton eigen state. Group-velocity-mathing between the local and generated wave is necessary not only as it produces a coup…
Rogue waves are solitary waves with extreme amplitudes, which appear to be a ubiquitous phenomenon in nonlinear wave propagation, with the requirement for a nonlinearity being their only unifying characteristics. While many mechanisms have been demonstrated to explain the appearance of rogue waves in a specific system, there is no known generic mechanism or general set of criteria shown to rule their appearance. Presupposing only the existence of a nonlinear Schrödinger-type equation together with a concave dispersion profile around a zero dispersion wavelength we demonstrate that solitons may…
The nature of transverse instabilities to dark solitons and dispersive shock waves for the (2+1)-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation / Gross-Pitaevskii (NLS / GP) equation is considered. Special attention is given to the small (shallow) amplitude regime, which limits to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. We study analytically and numerically the eigenvalues of the linearized NLS / GP equation. The dispersion relation for shallow solitons is obtained asymptotically beyond the KP limit. This yields 1) the maximum growth rate and associated wavenumber of unstable perturba…
Optical soliton pulses offer many applications within optical communication systems, but by definition a soliton is only subjected to second-order anomalous group-velocity-dispersion; an understanding of higher-order dispersion is necessary for practical implementation of soliton pulses. A numerical model of a waveguide was developed using the Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, with parameters set to ensure the input pulse energy would be equal to the fundamental soliton energy. Higher-order group-velocity-dispersion was gradually increased, for various temporal widths and waveguide dispersions. …
Analysis of Dispersive Fourier Transform dataset using Dynamic Mode Decomposition: evidence of multiple vibrational modes, and their interplay in a three-soliton molecule
We investigate soliton self-compression and ultraviolet resonant dispersive wave emission in the higher-order modes of a gas-filled hollow capillary fibre. Our simple analytical scaling rules predict shorter required waveguides and different energy scales when moving from the fundamental to higher-order modes. Experimentally, we demonstrate soliton self-compression and ultraviolet dispersive wave emission in the double-lobe LP$_{11}$ mode of an argon-filled hollow capillary fibre, which we excite by coupling into the fibre at oblique incidence. We observe the generation of ultraviolet dispersi…
The nonlinear propagation of optical pulses in dielectric waveguides and resonators provides a laboratory to investigate a wide range of remarkable interactions. Many of the resulting phenomena find applications in optical systems. One example is dispersive wave generation, the optical analog of Cherenkov radiation. These waves have an essential role in fiber spectral broadeners that are routinely used in spectrocopy and metrology. Dispersive waves form when a soliton pulse begins to radiate power as a result of higher-order dispersion. Recently, dispersive wave generation in microcavities has…
We report on the generation of a three-octave-wide supercontinuum extending from the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to the near-infrared, spanning at least 113 to 1000 nm (i.e., 11 to 1.2 eV), in He-filled hollow-core kagome-style photonic crystal fiber. Numerical simulations confirm that the main mechanism is a novel and previously undiscovered interaction between dispersive-wave emission and plasma-induced blueshifted soliton recompression around the fiber zero dispersion frequency. The VUV part of the supercontinuum, which modeling shows to be coherent and possess a simple phase structure, has su…
A conceptually new notion of hydrodynamic optical soliton tunneling is introduced in which a dark soliton is incident upon an evolving, broad potential barrier that arises from an appropriate variation of the input signal. The barriers considered include smooth rarefaction waves and highly oscillatory dispersive shock waves. Both the soliton and the barrier satisfy the same one-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, which admits a convenient dispersive hydrodynamic interpretation. Under the scale separation assumption of Whitham modulation theory the highly nontrivial non…
We theoretically investigate the dynamics, bifurcation structure and stability of quadratic dark localized dissipative states arising in cavity enhanced second-harmonic generation. These states, formed through the locking of plane front waves, undergo collapsed homoclinic snaking and may exhibit oscillatory dynamics.
New resonant emission of dispersive waves by oscillating solitary structures is considered analytically and numerically. The resonance condition for the radiation is derived and it is demonstrated that the predicted resonances match the spectral lines observed in numerical simulations perfectly. The complex recoil of the radiation on the soliton dynamics is discussed.
The emission of dispersive waves (DWs) by temporal solitons can be described as a cascaded four-wave mixing process triggered by a pair of monochromatic continuous waves (CWs). We report experimental and numerical results demonstrating that the efficiency of this process is strongly and non-trivially affected by the frequency detuning of the CW pump lasers. We explain our results by showing that individual cycles of the input dual-frequency beat signal can evolve as higher-order solitons whose temporal compression and soliton fission govern the DW efficiency. Analytical predictions based on th…
Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) in optical microresonators have been intensely studied from the perspective of both fundamental nonlinear physics and portable and low power technological applications in communications, sensing, and metrology. In parallel, synthetic dimensions offer the promise of studying physical phenomena with a dimensionality beyond that imposed by geometry, and have been implemented in optics. The interplay of DKS physics with synthetic dimensions promises to unveil numerous new physical and technological insights, yet many fundamental challenges remain. In particular, DK…
We have experimentally investigated the soliton interaction in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser and revealed the existence of three types of strong soliton interaction: a global type of soliton interaction caused by the existence of unstable CW components; a local type of soliton interaction mediated through the radiative dispersive waves; and the direct soliton interaction. We found that the appearance of the various soliton operation modes observed in the passively mode locked fiber soliton lasers are the direct consequences of these three types of soliton interaction. The soliton in…
We study generation of two-dimensional dispersive shock waves and oblique dark solitons upon interaction of tilted plane waves with negative refractive index defects embedded into defocusing material with linear gain and two-photon absorption. Different evolution regimes are encountered including the formation of well-localized disturbances for input tilts below critical one, and generation of extended shock waves containing multiple intensity oscillations in the "upstream" region and gradually vanishing oblique dark solitons in "downstream" region for input tilts exceeding critical one. The g…
Fragmentation of Stability Domains of Dark Solitons and Dark Breathers and Drifting Solitons at High Pump Intensities in Normal Dispersion Kerr Microresonators
Vortex solitons (dark solitons) are described in self-defocusing Kerr media whose phase line singularity is not parallel to the propagation direction, but is perpendicular or tilted almost arbitrary angles, depending on the medium linear dispersion. These solitons broaden the so-called spatiotemporal optical vortices recently observed in experiments to the nonlinear realm, opening new perspectives in practical applications of optical vortices.

Under investigation in this paper are the coupled complex short pulse equations, which describe the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in cubic nonlinear media.Through the Hirota method, bright-dark one- and two-soliton solutions are obtained. Interactions between two bright or two dark solitons are verified to be elastic through the asymptotic analysis. With different parameter conditions of the vector bright-dark two solitons, the oblique interactions, bound states of solitons and parallel solitons are analyzed.
Generating energetic femtosecond mid-IR pulses is crucial for ultrafast spectroscopy, and currently relies on parametric processes that, while efficient, are also complex. Here we experimentally show a simple alternative that uses a single pump wavelength without any pump synchronization and without critical phase-matching requirements. Pumping a bulk quadratic nonlinear crystal (unpoled LiNbO$_3$ cut for noncritical phase-mismatched interaction) with sub-mJ near-IR 50-fs pulses, tunable and broadband ($\sim 1,000$ cm$^{-1}$) mid-IR pulses around $3.0~μ\rm m$ are generated with excellent spati…
We experimentally and numerically study dispersive wave emission, soliton fission and supercontinuum generation in a silicon wire at telecommunication wavelengths. Through dispersion engineering, we experimentally confirm a previously reported numerical study [1] and show that the emission of resonant radiation from the solitons can lead to the generation of a supercontinuum spanning over 500 nm. An excellent agreement with numerical simulations is observed.
We experimentally observe long-wavelength dispersive waves generation in a BBO crystal. A soliton was formed in normal GVD regime of the crystal by a self-defocusing and negative nonlinearity through phase-mismatched quatradic interaction. Strong temporal pulse compression confirmed the formation of soliton during the pulse propagation inside the crystal. Significant dispersive wave radiation was measured in the anomalous GVD regime of the BBO crystal. With the pump wavelengths from 1.24 to 1.4 $μ$m, tunable dispersive waves are generated around 1.9 to 2.2 $μ$m. The observed dispersive wave ge…
We present the study of the dark soliton dynamics in an inhomogenous fiber by means of a variable coefficient modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation (Vc-MNLSE) with distributed dispersion, self-phase modulation, self-steepening and linear gain/loss. The ultrashort dark soliton pulse evolution and interaction is studied by using the Hirota bilinear (HB) method. In particular, we give much insight into the effect of self-steepening (SS) on the dark soliton dynamics. The study reveals a shock wave formation, as a major effect of SS. Numerically, we study the dark soliton propagation in the conti…
We predict the existence of surface dark solitons at the interface between a self-defocusing nonlocal nonlinear medium and a linear medium. The fundamental and higher-order surface dark solitons can exist when the linear refractive index of the self-defocusing media is much larger than that of the linear media. The fundamental solitons are stable and the stabilities of higher-order solitons depend on both nonlocality degree and propagation constant.
Temporal Kerr cavity solitons are pulses of light that can persist in coherently-driven, dispersive resonators with Kerr-type nonlinearity. It is widely accepted that such solitons react to parameter inhomogeneities by experiencing a temporal drift whose rate is governed by the gradient of the parameter at the soliton's position. This result, however, assumes that the gradient of the inhomogeneity is constant across the soliton, which may not hold true under all situations, e.g. when using bichromatic driving or in the presence of third-order dispersion that gives rise to an extended dispersiv…
Dark soliton formation in mode-locked lasers is investigated by means of a power-energy saturation model which incorporates gain and filtering saturated with energy, and loss saturated with power. It is found that general initial conditions evolve into dark solitons under appropriate requirements also met in the experimental observations. The resulting pulses are well approximated by dark solitons of the unperturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Notably, the same framework also describes bright pulses in anomalous and normally dispersive lasers.
Anomalous group velocity dispersion is a key parameter for generating bright solitons, and thus wideband Kerr frequency combs. Extension of frequency combs to visible wavelength in conventional photonic materials and structures has been a major challenge due to strong normal material dispersion at the relevant frequencies. Extension of frequency combs toward the normal dispersion region is possible via dispersive waves through soliton-induced Cherenkov radiation. However, this potentially powerful technique has not been used for extending frequency combs to the visible spectrum. In this paper,…
We consider dark solitons and their stability in spin-orbit coupled polariton condensates. The system supports spinor solitons of two types: conventional (symmetric) dark solitons and asymmetric half-dark solitons. They demonstrate essentially different behavior upon variation of the strength of spin-orbit coupling. One-dimensional spin-orbit coupled dark solitons are usually unstable, while half-dark solitons can be stable. Two-dimensional dark solitons at early stages of the development of transverse instabilities turn into asymmetric snaking patterns and later into sets of vortex-antivortex…
The process of soliton Cherenkov radiation (also known as dispersive wave emission) in microresonator frequency combs plays a critical role in generating broadband and coherent microcomb spectra. Here, we report the observation of symmetry breaking in the group velocity of counter-propagating dissipative Kerr solitons, induced by polychromatic soliton Cherenkov radiation. Results show that in the presence of higher-order dispersion, the temporal arrangement of a multi-soliton state affects its group velocity, an effect which originates from the interference between multiple radiative tails emi…

We study artificial neural networks with nonlinear waves as a computing reservoir. We discuss universality and the conditions to learn a dataset in terms of output channels and nonlinearity. A feed-forward three-layer model, with an encoding input layer, a wave layer, and a decoding readout, behaves as a conventional neural network in approximating mathematical functions, real-world datasets, and universal Boolean gates. The rank of the transmission matrix has a fundamental role in assessing the learning abilities of the wave. For a given set of training points, a threshold nonlinearity for un…
Optical solitons-stable waves balancing delicately between nonlinearities and dispersive effects-have advanced the field of ultrafast optics and dynamics, with contributions spanning supercontinuum generation and soliton fission, to optical event horizon, Hawking radiation, and optical rogue waves, amongst others. Here we investigate picojoule soliton dynamics in silicon slow-light photonic-bandgap waveguides under the influence of Drude-modeled free-carrier induced nonlinear effects. Using real-time and single shot amplified dispersive Fourier transform spectroscopy simultaneously with high-f…
We demonstrate that the dark soliton trains in optical fibers with a zero of the group velocity dispersion can generate broad spectral distribution (continuum) associated with the resonant dispersive radiation emitted by solitons. This radiation is either enhanced or suppressed by the Raman scattering depending on the sign of the third order dispersion.
By identifying the similarities between the coupled-wave equations and the parametrically driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we unveil the existence condition of the quadratic soliton mode-locked degenerate optical parametric oscillator in the previously unexplored parameter space of near-zero group velocity mismatch. We study the nature of the quadratic solitons and divide their dynamics into two distinctive branches depending on the system parameters. We find the nonlinear interaction between the resonant pump and signal results in phenomena that resemble the dispersive two-photon absorp…
